Yes they can be kept alone, and yes if your filter can handle a tiny bit more waist they can be kept in that size tank. If someone trys to convince you that rabbit snails need a huge tank because they are an inch longer than a mystery snail they are lying to you, and often doing so so they can sell you a huge tank you don't need for this snail.

this is just petco's brand of black sand - its totally inert and i personally love the stuff
