Happy Friday! A few things: first, I'll be discussing Thomasina (as well as a few other animal stories!) NEXT Friday, May 31st. Even if you didn't have an opportunity to read Thomasina or watch the Disney film here on TH-cam (it's free, and sooo good!), I hope you'll tune in to share comments about your own favorite animal tales! Secondly, I'll be posting most content on Fridays now. . . I may still post some incidental tags and other updates on Tuesdays and as well, some "shorts" -- so keep a look out with those as well --and do click "Like" if you'd like to show your support. Thank you, and have a really lovely weekend! 😊 I hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane. With love, from someone who believes there is nothing quite as exquisite as the relationship between a girl and her horse.
Oh my goodness, I adored Black Beauty when I read it as a teenager. I remember being so upset at the mistreatment. I had no idea that it was known about and popular in the US too. How amazing.
Hi Cath! When I was growing up it was still very much a classic here in the United States. Not so sure it would be with today’s kids.
One horse story that I want to reread soon is Airs Above the Ground by Mary Stewart about the Lippazon Stallions. 😊Thank you.😊
Ooh, good one, Cassandra! I've never read that! ❤
Loved the visit to Lollypop Farm, which has obviously grown since the early 1970s when we lived in Fairport and my husband took our girls there every available Saturday morning to visit the puppies.
It's definitely much larger, Hannah! And this is the first time I really noticed how lovely the landscaping is. Thanks for watching!
Hi Celeste, I loved Misty of Chincoteague when I was young 🥰
Glad to hear that others grew up loving Misty, too! ❤
I'd never heard of Lynd Ward. Such beautiful illustrations! I just found out that The Silver Pony and The Biggest Bear are at my local library. Thanks for the recommendations!
You’re very welcome. The Silver Pony is such a special story. 😊
Thank you for sharing your visit to Lollypop Farm. Horse by Geraldine Brooks
My pleasure! I hope some folks are interested in learning more, and donating. I've heard Horse is really good! You know, I have that on my TBR and was going to mention it but then the video kind of ended up centering on children's stories, so maybe I'll do a separate one about adult books about horses. I also have Secretariat, by William Nack and Seabiscuit: An American legend by by Laura Hillenbrand. . .
Thank you for sharing your passion for horses, Celeste! And huge thanks for sharing your photos from old good times, it’s so lovely. Have you read Kholstomer, the Story of a Horse by Leo Tolstoy? It’s a novella told from the perspective of a horse. Honestly speaking, I haven’t read it because I know that it’s a heartbreaking story …
Ooh, no, Daria - I've never heard of Kholstomer! I'll definitely check it out. Thank you!
I enjoyed your sharing of the Chincoteague ponies' story here. My parents went to the island for many summer vacations, over the years. They loved it there. So many good memories were made.
That was interesting background on Anna Sewell. How very poignant.
Also, very skillful and interesting use of casein there. Casein was one of the earliest paint mediums used by people. James Gurney, an artist who often uses casein, has posted some demos here on youtube.
That's interesting about the casein. I'll definitely look up his videos. Thank you! And so great to hear of your parent's trips to Chincoteague! 😊
Well, I didn't plan to end the day wanting to read a horse book, but thanks to your charming video that's where I am. 😄 Such a lovely video. I must get Writing Black Beauty as that's one of my favorites.
Hi Lori! Writing Black Beauty is an important story for learning about Mary Sewell, Anna Sewell and women's history in the late Regency and early/mid-Victorian eras. I do wish it hadn't been sort of dry and academic, but I do think it's worth a read. It does focus more on Sewell than on horses, so I might pair it with a reread of Black beauty! I've also heard that Horse by Geraldine Brooks is very good. Thanks for watching!
Oh! And The Biggest Bear is a massive favorite of ours! I found it at a garage sale years ago! You are right about his illustrations. They are amazing!
HI Celeste! How nice it is to finish up work and have a lovely sit-down with one of your videos! My Friend Flicka and the other books by Mary O'Hara were big ones for me! Oh and Black Beauty! Also, Little Black, A Pony by Walter Farley. I love it so much I have two copies now! I have those two exact hardback versions by Marguerite Henry that have been sitting on my shelves for years! I took them down and put in my tbr now! Speaking of Walter Farley, The Black Stallion is a huge favorite of mine, as well as my son's. I am currently reading one by Marion Holland - Casey Jones Rides Vanity - about halfway through and really liking it! It is out-of-print but I'm hoping a publisher will pick it up soon as I love Marion Holland's down-to-Earth writing. Have a lovely evening!!🐴🏇🐎
Hi Heather! I have The Black Stallion and believe it or not have never read it. I will also check out the other one by Walter Farley, as well as the Marion Holland book, which looks like it would be "up my street," as they say. I'm relieved that it doesn't sound as though any of the books I covered was the one you recently read and were planning on sharing. I was concerned about that. Have a wonderful weekend!
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 Oh no you must never worry about that! Its actually kind of great when we find ourselves reading the same thing...especially if its a lesser known book! By the way, I had to delay a bit to get my Italian reads in, but I am reading The Golden Name Day too and its wonderful! thank you for that recommendation!
@@WaterBearReads Thank you. Truthfully I get a bit anxious about that! I do try to mention other booktubers by name in my vlogs fairly frequently and try to give credit where credit is due, (even though I'm as vintage as the books and was reading many of these back in the 1960's, LOL --probably before many booktubers were born!) I'm so glad you're enjoying the Golden Name Day and you are very welcome! It just really makes me happy about celebrating the little everyday things in life and how to make them special. I love the sort of special ritual the author creates for the characters, around holidays, things as simple as flower gathering, baking, dolls, etc. 😊
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 Yeah I totally understand that feeling! I worry so much about being seen as a copycat that I fret a bit behind the scenes! By the way, are you on Instagram? I have a picture I plan to post on The Golden Name day and would love to tag you, but if not, I'll just mention your channel. I was planning to post it on Tuesday I think.
@@WaterBearReads Awe thanks, that's very sweet. I'm just barely on Instagram. Meaning I have an account and so far, one picture, LOL. I really need to post more there and catch up as I now have 74 videos on TH-cam and don't know how to upload photos and videos with Instagram. The Instagram name is
celeste_schantz. I followed you on Instagram just now, so maybe you can find me more easily. What a lovely page!
Thank you for taking us outside and meeting these amazing animals. Your channel is a joy to watch!
My pleasure, Betty! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and it's comments like yours which are the reward! I hope you have a peaceful place you can go to outside as well. It really nourishes the soul.
I just finished rereading Stormy, Misty's Foal a couple weeks ago. I love the whole Misty series and I've managed to finally find all the books in vintage hardcover copies. I grew up in Northern Virginia, so the Chincoteague and Assateague Island areas are near and dear to me.💜 My next horse tale to read will be The Black Stallion by Walter Farley.
Sounds like a great summer reading project! Those vintage copies of the Marguerite Henry books are so lovely --it's exciting just to look at them! Beautiful, rich-colored covers most by Wesley Dennis, I think. I've never read The Black Stallion but have a paperback copy. I hope you enjoy it! Chincoteague and Assateague Islands are wonderful!
Congratulations on reaching 1000 subscribers. “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!”
Richard III, Act 5, scene 4, line 13. Shakespeare. Best wishes.
Ha, good one! And I'm reading about Richard this week, so it's fitting!
Oooo - I just remembered the Monica Dickens Follyfoot books too!
Lollypop Farm...what a delightful place! And I love the picture of you and your friend at the riding academy. I've been to Chincoteague, it's beautiful there. What a great experience for you as a child! I've never read Misty, but you make me want to! Lynd Ward was an amazing artist! The stories about animal cruelty are very hard to hear. I've never read a lot of books on horses. I'm not sure why. But this was a wonderful tribute to horse books!
Chincoteague is definitely beautiful! And after I made this I thought of about five other books from childhood on 🐴. I don’t know why but for a time horses were the most exciting thing in the world to me. Thanks for watching! ❤️
I really enjoyed your video and all the memories it brought back! I loved all the Walter Farley books, especially the Black Stallion series. Marguerite Henry's Misty, and King of the Wind. The Timber Trail Riders series - I particularly remember The Texas Tenderfoot and The Mystery of the Hollywood Horse. Old Bones the Wonder Horse by Mildred Mastin Pace, about the racehorse Exterminator. Now I want to find some of these books, but they'll have to be the old ones with the original illustrations, I think I may have loved Walter Farley's and Wesley Dennis's illustrations even more than the stories!
Thanks, Kate! Wow, I'm NOT familiar with most of these --so I'm taking notes. A girl can never have too many horse books! 🙂
I loved horse stories too ♥️ many of the ones you mentioned are all time favorites.
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo,
The Black Stallion by Farley,
She who rides horses by Barnes
The arrows and valdemar books by Lackey
Maggie Stiefvater’s Scorpio Races.
Hi, Deea! Thank you! I got a copy of War Horse from Goodwill but haven’t read it yet. Ditto a copy of The Black Stallion. I’ve not heard of She who Rides Horses. Will check that out. 😊
@@areadersalmanacwithceleste1366 the other “horses” mentioned (lackey and stiefvater) above are fantasy genre.
@@novelideea I’ve heard of Mercedes, (when I was a librarian I used to work in the teen room and reshelve her books- also Garth Nix! )have never read her work.
