Vintage US made vice vs. new Vevor vice. How does it compare?

  • I was looking for a new Vice to place in the new studio. Vevor had this 6 inch unit that fit my needs pretty well. I like that it has a rubber clamp insert so that it can be used on delicate items.

My dad just gave me what was my grandpa's vise, it's also seen better days since it's been welded in a few spots, probably much older than the one you have here.

I hope that this one holds up as well!

I have a smaller 200mm vice with 6" jaws. I've had it for about four years and it still runs fine. The machining isn't perfect but it doesn't need to be for what it does. I think tools will last as long as they are kept well and used within tolerance, so if I try to beat on an inch thick piece of steel in the jaws, they will break. I'd expect it to last a very long time.

You make a great point there- use within their tolerances. I have used a few thing passed what they were designed for and can't get mad if they break.

In my 20 plus years of doing tool & die work I broke at least 2 vices , maybe 3. But then again I broke a number of ( Sears ) craftsman tools but I could always take it back for a new one but later in years they replaced with rebuilt tools. I don't know if craftsman stands buy their tools now or not . Really like these shop videos you have been putting out!

Thank you- I am not sure about vices but the hand tools most companies do offer life time warranties

Nice addition to the shop. Most don't include the soft jaws. So that's a nice touch.

I thought so to. It certainly looks nice.

Hard to live without a decent bench vise if you do anything at all. This made me recall that a company I worked for had a break-in at night and they actually unbolted and stole my company owned vise, among other things. I always thought it was an inside job.

I agree, that's such an odd thing to steal, it almost had to be someone that knew what you had there.

Nice that Vevor included the soft jaw blocks . I have a few vice that are literally 100 yrs plus , they are built to last but do have their limitations , never hit something with a sledgehammer while held by a vice , or you'll be welding the vice back together 🙂 . Another point is , the old vice parts were forged , not cast , allowing them to repaired . Anyway , you'll be happy with your new vice , the 6" jaws will make working on some things easier .

Hmm. So A cast vice couldn't be welded? I never knew that. I weld, but only when I must.

@@FarpointFarms I’ve never tried welding cast iron or steel , I’ve been told there is a way to do it using certain rods a prepping the cast . Something I’ll have to research

Does Vevor put it's name on everything? Huge variety of products.

They are a HUGE company that is currently looking to take Harbor Freight to the tool shed. I'd bet they will have tool boxes available soon!

Yeah no. Even welded that Charles Parker will hold up to a lot more then that imported. That said nothing wrong with the light duty models being made today. Just won’t hold up the same way especially with abuse

Time will tell. So far it's working well. I was beating on it Saturday trying to break a hub bearing apart.

You didn't compare or test either vice.

The point I was trying to make was that my vintage vise broke at sometime I. It's past. People are. To think that vintage views are bullet proof. That is not the case.
As for a follow up. The new vise survived a full spring summer and fall of use in a small engine shop.
      Pretty happy!

They don’t make em like that anymore.

No, not for many years. This one was made in CT, and was bought by Stanley at some point in history before disappearing from the market.
