    Sparky likes to play rough sometimes and I do encourage it by going along with it BUT I have never nor will I ever react to teeth and claws with anger or surprise. I always take the pain and back off from the play and allow him to lick my hand as I gently pet him while saying "good boy"

    All my kitties were, are and have been, super chill.Young, middle-aged, and old. Not sure why, I always adopt big old kitties from shelters, and/or take in young strays who find their way to my door. Kindness, warm places to sleep, good food, and medical care when needed, always seems to be met with a calm, content purr machine. I have no idea what I am.doing, but they seem.to appreciate it so, meh, they are happy, so I am happy.

    The monster living under my blankets that my cat loves to wrestle with however, is a whole different story.

    As you were speaking, Maui laid down across my stomach & chest, and started grooming himself. I put my hand out gently bin front of his face, and he licked my hand, which I gently rubbed on the back of his head as a way to help him groom.
    He’s such a beautiful, loving boy. The last few nights, he’s wanted to play rough with my feet under the covers. His teeth did get my foot as I tried to escape. I naturally said “OW!” and quickly removed myself from under the covers, then went and washed the bite area. The next night, I removed myself more quickly, and tonite, no attempt at rough play was made.
    I don’t really think he wants to play rough, he just doesn’t realize how HUGE he is. If I place my fingers between his ears, I can easily fit 6 fingers between them. He is so much larger than most domestic cats! His front paws are about the size of a medium dog’s front paws. Just a REALLY BIG BOY!

    I believe you are not correct. I rough house it all the time with my 18 pound tom cat. He loves it, he starts it, he trusts me, he follows me around the house all the time. He never leaves my side, as I type this he is under my feet. He sleeps better after we are done.

    I think wand toys and kicker toys are key for younger cats with a lot of energy .If you don't let them use your body as a prey toy they will still get the same hunting / stalking satisfaction from a play session .Another reason to never rough play with a cat is that they can get hurt ,some of their bones are very fine and fragile and jerking away to hard, if they bite, can break a tooth .Much better to keep physical contact gentle and let the toys take the punishment .

    I don't believe in playing rough with my cats but the cats do play a little rough with each other especially the younger ones and I don't have a problem with that as long as it doesn't get too rough. When I'm playing with my cat my hands are not the toys. I use a feather wand toy, stuffed mice and jingle balls.

    My cat loves playing rough with me o.o We can lock eyes and move towards each other and he'll crab up and then try to dart towards me sideways-bouncing and playfight with my hands, like try to bite whichever is closest, then we wrestle and he loves having his face covered and trying to get around my fingers to bite them, he alternates with licks and bunny kicks with claws in, then breaks off and runs to hide and peeks out and we lock eyes again and do it all over again :D

    I never rough house with Loki. I don't even try to kiss him on the head. I think he might misunderstand and think I'm going to bite him. He will allow me to play with his tail until he gets tired of it and walks away. I don't force the issue. He might be small for a Maine Coon male, but he's still twice as large as any cat I've ever had.

    When my cats are young and they start to use teeth or claws on my body parts, I never try to pull away, but I will immediately use a scolding sound in a loud voice. Like a sharp, uh, uh, uh. They will stop and look and when they let go I'll very carefully give them their favorite scratch and tell them how good and smart they are and then leave them alone. It works like a charm and they learn very quickly to keep rough play restricted to between each other. Never, ever, hit a cat!

      I suggest quality and predictability over quantity. Have a certain part of day she can reliably look forward to and then focus on whatever she likes to do (sitting in sun, walks, birdwatching..) Of course, they are all different. Our lady kitty is usually ready to go back inside after 10-15 minutes once a day, but the young man tries to be outside almost all the time.

    Like this guy, but gonna have to strenuously disagree on this one. First off, anyone I catch using phrases like "must never" except when talking about murder or similar, usually gets invited to take a long walk off a short pier. Don't treat your cat like a human/child. If you've got a cat, you've got a life and home that have a cat. There's no need for physical play to degenerate into violence so long as the human recognises when to apply the brakes, either a little or all the way, and conveys the message to kitty. If you want a life free of scratches and scrapes, just die now cuz that level of fear sounds miserable.

    • @morganwilliams5591
      @morganwilliams5591 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I think the problem is that he's equating ANY kind of play fighting with actual aggression, and assuming that the human is just like, pummeling their cat when they play fight back. I wrestled with my old kitty her whole life, and always made sure I was gentle enough that she'd never get hurt (just like grabbing at her back feet or rubbing her belly). She knew how to in turn play gently enough that I also wouldn't get hurt, and on the occasions where she got carried away I'd just make an exaggerated yelp of pain and then walk away, and she'd be much gentler next time.
