    I will be turning 65 soon. I've come to realize I'm running out of time to do and try everything I've accumulated over the years. I'm interested in so many different things...(cooking, baking, decorating cakes/cookies, scrapbooking, writing, woodwork, quilting, crocheting, diy's, junk to treasures, beads, painting, macrame, diamond painting, wreath making, decorating, gardening (flowers and vegetables), canning, freezing, card making, sewing, couponing (stockpiling), all crafting, the list goes on and on...I want to try everything and I've bought stuff for all the above hobbies. Reality is I'm running out of time and I need to declutter so I don't leave this burden to my hubby or kids. It's emotional as I come to the realization that my time on earth is in the last season.

      I'm turning 60. I finally realized too I'm in a different season of life and don't have much time left. I'm in the process if decluttering everything I have. Today has been an emotional one. But I need my home to be simple and don't want to leave so much for my kids to sort through.

      While I understand your thoughts, if you are healthy, you could still enjoy another 30 years of crafts and hobbies. That said, I too have far too many interests, and my interests have changed in the last 20 years. We need to declutter, but we don't need to give it all up.

    I've stumbles across my best labeling tool, freezer tape (not masking tape) and a big marker. When I want to change the label, the tape comes off with the least amount of goo residue of anything else I've tried. I'm always changing my mind about what's in the bins, so being able to easily change the label works for me.

    • @TheDriftwoodlover
      @TheDriftwoodlover 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea. There’s also a product called “low-tack masking tape.” Discovered it when I worked in advertising. Can seal paper envelope with it and reseal without issue. Leaves no residue either. Probably found in art supply stores.

      I use 3x5 note cards, writing on them in bold magic marker, and then tape them onto the outside of my bins using clear boxing tape. The labels are bold, hard to miss and easy to read. The boxing tape covers the note card and protects it, and the tape peels off the bin easily when I'm done with it. I've used this method for years and never had them leave tape residue behind.

    One thing I’ve saved and I think I still got in a box is my Girl Scout sash from the 1970s! With only a very few badges representing accomplishments that I achieved… Including cooking and sewing, I believe. Not a lot of meaning to me, but I kept thinking it be interesting to show people… I live abroad, so as a piece of American history etc.… I even have that cord that you put on your shoulder with the gold loops around, if you know what that is. and that little bit I’ve actually repurposed, now I have it hanging in my bathroom and barrettes are clipped onto it! Very practical 😀 I think when I get to that box again, that it may be able to go! Doesn’t really have any particular meaning to anyone except me and my mom perhaps, and certainly does not identify our relationship!

    I had 7 tubs/boxes of coursework from my BA and MS in teaching. Now I’m homeschool mom of 6, and I don’t have time, desire, or need to look at it. I realized I was keeping it IN CASE… my husband passed away unexpectedly and I had to support our whole family by tutoring…? What?! I wouldn’t do that. I would find a different way of earning a living that I enjoy more. Making myself see why I had kept it was so critical to downsizing it.

    Thank you for this inspirational video, and reality-check! You're the best! It's just what I needed at this time.
    I spent years in a job that I had a lot of training for, and still have so many boxes of books and materials from it, but I'm doing something different now. I've been holding on to the old materials "just in case" I have to return to that job; however, it's not who I am anymore. I've moved on. So, I've decided to donate or trash all of them now (and if I ever do need them again, most of that info is online anyway). Thank you for your encouragement and example!

    We have had trunks of Renaissance garb for 20+ years and not opened them. We even moved with them from CA to MO. I just wasn't ready to get rid of the contents. Finally I was ready. I didn't want to send to a thrift store because they wouldn't know what to do with it. I posted it on FB market place. I gave it away for free. It broke my heart but it did no good taking up space. I didn't go through the trunks or tote bags. I would have backed out if I did. It's a good thing the lady came with a truck because there was well over 100# of stuff she took away.

    Thank you Dana for all you do. I use your questions DAILY in my home. Its far from perfect, but better today than yesterday... and I am flexing them muscles (and better - helping my kiddo NOT be in a mess later in life) to declutter and re-home and be real with myself. So that being said - I have a samovar (its a Russian tea - - pot? - - thing... Not very ornate like some in the google machine) that has been in my garage for 6 years. My mother is aging and she also has one - which means I will also get it. Do you have any suggestions on how to display something like this? I'm genuinely stumped and I don't want to donate/sell it because it is very cool and tied to my family's identity (albeit very loosely). It isn't "in the way" or shuffled around often, but I have guilt having it in my garage, not being loved by anyone. I welcome ANYONE'S suggestions that either may push me to get rid of it or a great "turn it into some visual love". Thank you again! I love seeing your videos!

    • @Marialla.
      @Marialla. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope I'm not rude if I suggest it sounds like something more appropriate to donate to your church. They could likely use it to serve tea for events or "greeting hour", and it could be enjoyed by many!
      My only other suggestion would be to look up how a samovar is displayed in Russia where it comes from. Do they store it and pull it out as needed, or keep it on its own special table? Do you have room/strength to either move it as needed, or permanently store it in view?
      If you care to store it out of sight, does it make sense to store other cultural/family history items with it, so the entire trove might be trotted out for special events when remembering your roots is important?

    • @annaclose7043
      @annaclose7043 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Marialla. You know - the church thing is something to be considered. Maybe not a church (its large, and functions on old fashioned wood to heat so I'm not sure it would fare any better there)... but maybe put it "on Loan" or just out right donate to a Russian museum. As far as personal display - I didn't think about a table option... I will have to think about that too. I appreciate the thoughts - no need to apologize for being rude (which you weren't at all) when I'm asking for it :) Cheers!

    I recently had to move and I decided that it was time to purge my “pre-pandemic” wardrobe. Office wear, formal party dresses, clothes for going to a bar, etc. Some of it was stuff I had actually bought during the past year, but at the time I wasn’t being realistic either about my new size or my new lifestyle.
    The thing that caused me to declutter it despite it all fitting in my wardrobe is that I decided to prioritize the right now, literally. My former landlady was willing to take any donations to the thrift store for me so anything I decluttered, I could just leave behind. I saved so much time that I was able to take my friends who were helping me move out to dinner. It might seem silly but one evening out with them was worth more than dealing with all those clothes for another minute. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Teacher for 33 years, recently retired identity clutter-working through it. Teaching has changed so much that there are things that now have better options available, so that is one of the things I can use to get rid of things. Also with the Internet and printers, higher quality materials are more readily available. Almost everything I got from my teacher mother has already gone into the trash for those reasons. I decided if I teach again, it will be online, so some materials can go because they don't translate well to online learning. So many boxes still to go through. Another identity is crafter (yarn and fabric): working my way through yarn, still have to get it down to one large tote (at the moment the lid does not fit on), and will start fabric once yarn is done. Oh my goodness, so hard to get through identity clutter. This video definitely helped clarify things for me.

Very difficult getting rid of all my horse stuff: tack, clothes, trophies, blah blah blah. College papers! College text books! It list goes on and on.

    You hit the doorbell on the head with this one, Dana. Only last year I finally let go of decades-old workshop materials I'd developed. Identity...and the products of a job I didn't even like. This summer I finally dealt with my own group and workshop materials which I'd loved creating and working with...now years past. Harder to do because they were uniquely mine, still relevant, and I identified closely with them and the associated memories. My creative, professional identity. Difficult as it was, I spent time going through, revisiting and remembering all of the experiences and people involved, aided by notes, letters and testimonials. A privilege, pleasure, and gratifying but all in the past now. No more "maybe I'll..." or "I could still...". I've kept a few treasured notes/letters as mementos for now, but also felt relieved of the weight of all those lingering possibilities. I know that if someone asked me if I'd do a program today, I'd either say No, thanks or Yes, and start from scratch. More likely the first. Done. Thanks so much for this wonderful example and great job. It was affirming. (I'd have kept the Raggedy Ann wig though.)

After years of creating different programs, my last one of 2 yrs was evaluated by 3 states as a model for success and they wanted me to publish a book and go state to state teaching social and community services how to implement it. I wanted to but not bad enough to go through with it. I know if I was asked to start that program where I live now ( and it's really needed) I would have to have full control and a much bigger paycheck. Times have changed since then and there are a lot of mandates to do this or that and I won't be squeezed into a box. that wouldn't align with my value of loving what you do. I’m Still spinning-circles trying to declutter in preparation of a more tidy organized home. It would make for easier cleaning and my best friend saying, “so what are you up to today?” Me - same old pat-phrase, “oh, just working around.” On the surface, very decent but underneath, omg. So depressing. I keep chugging along. But this didn’t happen overnight. So I keep telling myself, eventually it will all come together. I love hearing the trash truck coming down the road. At last minute, I’ve been tossing “stuff?” In the dumpster just as he pulls up. It’s such a good feeling. With that being said, I also have to many eminent (sp?) responsibilities. Basically, life & health that comes first. But when my spurts wake up, outta my way. 😊. Thank you. Excuse any errors 🙃 no time for proofing. I just got one of those spurts. So outta my way 😊🙃😊

      Yes, depressing but so worthwhile. It helps me to take pictures of the space and store as a note on my phone. When I need motivation, I look back and realize I have moved the needle more than I realized. It’s taken me years to pare down and I have one space left-sentimental and crafts. I just gave my beloved cricket machine to a local homeschool group. Even though it was a hard decision, my children are grown and I don’t use it anymore. I asked the lady if I could use it if I had a craft in mind and she said, of course! She said she has been praying for one! And here it was collecting dust in my home.
