This made me so happy to see another studio photographer utilizing a simple single light set-up. As a studio photographer myself, 90% of my creative portrait work is done with one strobe & umbrella (I too prefer umbrella to softbox!). BRAVO
Yer can do a lot with a single light, totally depends on the look you like, a lot of fashion / e-com needs 3 lights +, so its good to have those more complex setups worked out, but know when to use them, or when to dial it back.
These collaborations you've done lately have inspired me so much with the educational and artistic content they offer! ❤ I'd love to see more of these so keep up the good work!
Sincere. One of the most useful and interesting videos you've made in recent months. Considering that I am a portrait photographer, your friend's ideas are wonderful. Thanks Pete. 🎞🖤
Your tutorials have been so very informative and rich on content since the very begining. Love how instead of just showing your point of view and photography style you can bring others and tottally give them the spotlight. Feels like a average numb nut like myself can actually take a few decent picture. Last summer got to capture a moonrise nightime picture thanks to your tutorials. 2022 was a pretty bad year for my family and being able to capture a moment like that was breath taking for my dad. Bravo!!
HOLY BUCK BOYS WHAT A VIDEO! Seriously learned a ton and it’s funny that thing you mentioned about needing a ton of lights was exactly what kind of intimidated me from studio photography but damn seeing Lane at work got me motivated to do it now and again in my home space
One continuous light. One strobe. A handful of different modifiers. [The black v-flats used in the video are also modifiers. I might need one or two...]
Hi Peter, you are the most watched person on TH-cam these past 5 years and I would like to thank you for all your content and tell you that even though we admins know each other personally, we feel so close to you for your humility. You are someone I admire so much and I hope to meet you one day and I thank you for all your teachings and I wish you a good and prosperous life, you are a fabulous person and I wish you all the best in life, I am becoming a better photographer because I am learning a lot from you and you are a person who stimulates others a lot. Love you from Italy!Have a good life Peter💥
Lane is totally up my street, what a legend. I get sladed at uni not over complicating things but still making sure to get the best results 😂 he's got great energy need more future colabs with him
Great Video. I operate the attic studio and some magic happens there despite it´s just 2 walls and my cheap lights. Whenever you don´t know what to shoot go in a corner and take self portraits. It builds self-confidence infront and behind your camera. Noone is there to judge and you perfect the art of lighting a subject.
Fantastic photos. I love the single light setup. I think less is more a lot of the time. I think the less stuff you have, the less distractions you have the more focused you are on you're subject. Loving all these new vids lately and can't wait to see the new office.
Lane is so magnetic and charismatic. I'm planning to set up a small space portrait studio in my bedroom right now and this video is GREAT inspiration. Great content as always Pete!
Haven't watched a Peter McKinnon video in probably 5 years but had to click for the thumbnail. Glad I did, awesome portraits, and Master Supply Co has some cool stuff too!
Pete….I think I subscribed to your channel about 4 years ago and it has been so much fun and absolutely awesome to see the adventures that you have and the insight and creativity and INSPIRATION that you give. I really do look forward to always seeing your next video. They continuously blow me away.
I really enjoy how you frequently bring in other talented people to teach in your videos. To me it shows how you’re humble. While a very skilled creator you aren’t afraid to let your audience know that you yourself don’t know everything.
Amazing video! We mentored a local photographer earlier today and talked how SIMPLE and beautiful you can be in the studio! Most looks were achieved with one light. Keep it up Pete!
Real talk I learned alot from this video. Not only about about photogrpahy and setting up studio shoots with 1 basic light but also marketing myself as a photogrpaher. Thanks!
LOVE THE VID! Thanks for featuring a Nikon shooter. I shoot a lot of different brands including Canon, (whatever works), but there has been so much Nikon hate on You Tube it's ridiculous. It just gets tiring, especially since I just bought my first Nikon.
Holy F Boys - wow just rocked my photography world! I am an advanced amateur street photographer (female) who tried a studio portrait class this week. ONE light - LOVED it. I have always been so intimidated by studio lighting, not anymore. Thank you both
The way that Pros did their jobs is always different! and, yeah, the results are INCREDIBLE! Watch whole video without missing any seconds! Thank Pete and Lane so much
I took part in a few studio workshops in the past, and watching what the pros could do was just humbling. I did learn quite a bit, and had nice results, but you are right that a pro (in anything) is just amazing to watch work. I used to race motocross and had a few chances to ride with the pros. No matter how well I was riding, and feeling like I was on fire, to hear and see a pro fly by was just something else.
Peter, for a good little while i had stopped following your videos because, honestly, it felt like you "have lost it". These last few vids you've pumped out have been so great, honest, high quality and entertaining that i am super glad you are back! :D
My first three photoshoots I did in my kitchen/dinner area, moving the table and giving me enough room to shoot. Then, I graduated to my living room when I got my new flashes... now, I have my own studio (which is the back room of a dance studio that I can use during the day)... And still, all I use is two lights - one with a small octobox, one with a small reflector plus grid. Still gives the most amazing portraits...
I would normally say portrait photography is so intimidating, just not my style at all... but damn you guys make it look like so much fun! I'm inspired, awesome video!
Gosh! this entire video session was so much freaking awesome 👀🔥🔥👏.. Andddd.... Kirk's voice is so deep and beautiful. Love it ❤️ and the entire every studio photography moments.
2 minutes in. Gonna go grab a beer and sit back and enjoy this one. I’m feeling pretty confident I’ll both learn and continue to be entertained. Nice work boys 👌
What an excellent and awesome video, Peter! Lane is amazing! His tips, insight and instruction are gold. I appreciate your input here as well. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this video and for posting it.
Nice video. Creative photos are a transformation of reality, not a duplication of it. It’s not a documentary, it’s artistic with an emotional presence. The same “lie” could be said of art, music recorded in a studio and movies which make actors and actresses look so much better in every way than they are. August Rush 2023 Tour 🤘🏻
With regards to 4:40 and a tip for many aspiring photographers. If the person you're shooting is a total stranger to you, ask them to maybe bring a good friend that can make them laugh! It's a also a good way to get them to relax and get seemingly candid shots of them. Because as Lane mentioned, people will remember how the shoot felt. It's also a faster way to get to know a little about your client during the shoot. I've done something similar multiple times with bands who toured. Usually if I could get them to talk to another member who could distract them. I could pose them as needed and get the best expressions out of them at the same time! Which made for both great shots and a great experience! A great experience becomes a great story, and a great story can build great relationships! As for 14:30 definitely not the best place to place a desk I think? If anything maybe @DearModern can help 😉
love this video. love how he only used 1 light and didn't really go deep into gear like all the gear review channels out there. love the images from this shoot!
Peter you inspired me to take the chance and finally step into photography by buying my first and hopefully one of the many cameras in this journey. I am truly thankful.
amazing Peter as always! I loved how I was hooked the whole video! I kinda think that I know you just by watching your videos, it’s crazy I could actually feel I was there in the studio! Greetings from Guatemala!
Finally a good video that actually taught me a lot! I've been following since the beginning and your vids helped me a lot! But recently it's been more of 'promotion - paying the bills' videos which is great for you! But not really all that interesting to me and I haven't really watched them.. I really hope you can keep up these informative videos coming while still promoting and profiting off it. This is a great integration of a video I'd watch! In any how - thank you a lot!
When I was shooting quite a bit, I found that work in the studio really helped me understand light in a different way when I was outside the studio. I still look back at some of my in-studio shots and am shocked that I made those images.
any other vloggers catch his buddy was not ready for the intro. thought peter was gonna give a second take but, oh shhit, ,no redo?, nope this is THE Take. got it. lol
When you hear this 7:43 on Peter's videos; just know it's about to GO DOWN 🤯😤❤️ I just love the feel and mood of this guy soo much makes me to never get tired of watching him. Could watch the whole season of him talking random staff and still be 🤯 no coffee needed, may be lol
I thought nobody can top pete in portrait photography, but here is a cowboy making stuff work with a solo light, and going against the wind with an umbrella.
Ha, This dude is awesome finally a video with someone that does what most of us watching this channel does "Photography" who is a simple yet amazingly talented dude shooting cool sh$t with the most basic setup proves you don't need all the crap these "high-end" you-tubers throw at you cuz some company sent it to them for free that most of us can't afford it comes down to talent and just thinking of ways to be creative with what you have sure over time you'll also have more and more gear or what not but always remember the story your telling comes first be creative about it Thanks Pete for sharing this guy with us we need more ppl like this showing us how its done

I’m right there with you @gioandjc. Pretty much the majority of my shoots I’m only using the one light.
Ps, how good was this video?
it possible to use one, provided that you have well lit room.
@@ulyssessait you don't need any ambient light. You shape the one light you have

Bro for real I’m literally so exited rn
Was thinking the same!
Meant to be.

Frig what great photos! Also I love that "sometimes you gotta pull all the cars out of the garage" .... leaves a single light on. DEAD. so good.

I can definitely attest to the good vibes on set with Lane! Such a cool, charismatic guy to be around! Awesome to see you two collab! 🤙🏼👏🏼
you guys emanate the same vibe. and i love it!!
Just goes to show how little you can use to create some incredible work! Love that Pete has been highlighting other's work lately!
This hit so hard Pete! Oh my GOODNESS. A video from you dedicated to my favourite photography medium, and with one light no less! Thank you ☺️ ❤
YAY FINALLY SOME LOVE FOR NIKON FAM!
This brought a tear to my eye. Not sure why, but having a passionate professional create beautiful pictures just does it.
I love the fact you get into the shot so much and get on your back - I do it when I need that shot.
Lane is totally up my street, what a legend. I get sladed at uni not over complicating things but still making sure to get the best results 😂 he's got great energy need more future colabs with him

Pure motivational shift. Currently at my home studio using one spotlight and backdrop. What an inspiring video. LOVED IT! Thank you and take care!
Simple is Best.... One light sometimes two is the most natural type of lighting.... great shooter
I love how you support other small creators/creativ ppl, who are doing cool things. I wish more big names would do same things.

and I'm low key happy to see Nikon on the channel ;)
“August Rush”. Pete’s been thinking about this. Great video showcasing all that we love about photography. All about feeling and story.
Would have loved to see the camera settings as they were taken! What a fun and informative video from someone who does mostly landscape.
I’m excited.!!! The aesthetics are beyond stunning in another level. Peter is so inspiring as always ❤
Simply love how 2023 has started with the amazing videos Pete. I’m so happy we have 11 more months to go for videos for this year. Let’s gooooooo.
The magic of one light 🔥 awesome to see old gear being revived. My first Broncolors were like 30years old when I got them. They still work.
I really enjoy how you frequently bring in other talented people to teach in your videos. To me it shows how you’re humble. While a very skilled creator you aren’t afraid to let your audience know that you yourself don’t know everything.
Never thought we’d see so much Nikon on the channel
love you guys! this is so inspiring just to watch how you interact, besides all the practical stuff
4:04 I honestly like the random stacks of paper backdrops as a background. That could be a dope portrait for a photographer

Great video Pete and Lane! Super insightful and so distinct with both of your brands. The pics looked great, excited for more vids like this!
Thanks for taking us bts with this, it's sick and so informative! I appreciate the August Rush reference 💥
