One of my favorite art related quotes is "Music is always made for the listeners, but the first listener is the player" by Wynton Marsalis. We often make things for others to see/listen to, but ultimately you have to start by making something YOU want to see. When I learned that it changed the way I make things, and it's one of the things that reignited my fire for creativity.
This is a great quote! I had the absolute pleasure of (finally) seeing Wynton Marsalis play live in Portland Maine 4 weeks ago. He is an absolute legend.
Peter!!! Thank you brother! I sold my first large print to a stranger for over $1000! (Photo of Jurassic rock in Maui shot from an helicopter) and I learned everything from you on the last 8 years, from beginner to award wining wedding photography to sell my first print for Art Display!! I hope one day I can thank you in person!!!
I LOVE these kinds of discussions. So much food for thought. I have been literally having this sort of conversation with my wife for the past few weeks, she's in a very important transition point in her life. I've invited her out to watch the video with me in it was very inspiring for her as well. So let me leave a very warm thank you here for you.
Art is a rhythmic therapy when you engage that energy with your soul. If you care to share that with others. It's a blessing to them if it resonates, but it's always a blessing and meditative journey for the one soul that creates for the healing of one's soul.
Don’t ever stop being who you are Pete I have watched you since day one on TH-cam and I love the evolution of your channel. You’re one of the real ones and that’s why you’re still around and not quitting TH-cam.
My favorite brand is one from Japan called Visvim. The owner used to make books with pictures of items from his collection, the pieces from the clothing line for the season, and his reflections about where the inspiration came from for the clothing. They were called dissertations and were hard cover bound. I think Pete needs to make them.
Damn, guys. That video helped me a lot. Feeling not seen, missing the algorithm by miles, having the feeling that no one sees what I'm doing. Thank you so much for your inspiration. Bring back blogs! And conversations like that!
At 10:50. Words have never resonated with me more. These last 2 years have beat me into a shell. But I’m thankful for it. I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. “‘I’ve never been lighter” is exactly how I’d describe it. I’m finally learning who I am and I’ve never felt more. I was described as heartless, having seemingly no emotion. Today I can FEEL art.
Yes. And the viewer of my photos is me. If someone else enjoys them then all the better. I was advised in the beginning to avoid getting into the Instagram feedback loop. "Just take the photos". I'm sooooo glad I took their advice. It's just me and the camera creating images without a million other voices making me second guess everything I do.
you always inspire thankyou, but we all must remember why we all pickup a camera and started taking photos, the fun the journey and the adventure to see things in a different way, thanks for the inspiration to do better.
You are you Pete, you said your style has changed, to me, it hasn’t. You are still the guy I subscribed to long time ago, positive energy, everytime developing, surprising and, yes, inspiring. Your style has evolved, you’re more happy, you recovered your love for the art again, doesn’t get better than that. Happy Wednesday, cheers as usual, from Germany.
Peter, loving your videos that you've been uploading lately. That real talk that you do about how social media has changed, why we should not care about numbers.... wow. Love it. Its really good to watch your videos as a creator. ❤
Just watched and literally cried a little bit when you said "the hungry wolf will runs the furthest". Just feeling the grind and stress everyday trying to make it. This is amazing Peter!
Hey! I'm attending Sheridan College. In second year, not thinking about dropping out, but I get what a relief that would be. Intense!! I live hearing your professional story :)
I agree with both you guys. I get really stoke when one of my youtube videos gets 100 + views. For me it's the process of making art, videos , pictures, and not the numbers. Making vids, trying out different film stocks that what makes me happy. Great Video Guys!
Woahhhh, they are back, the podcast style, interview style episodes are back. Super stocked already. Thanks Pete 🤩🙌🏻 absolutely love to layback and watch these videos.
That All depends on who the art is intended for. Art can be useful and therapeutic for the creator, a great escape. Music is art. One can create music and art for themselves and get just as much satisfaction without sharing it. That’s when the ego comes into play and the pure essence of the art is sometimes lost, it’s no longer your art and it’s now open for interpretation.
Art is perhaps the purest and highest form of communication that exists...but perhaps we need to communicate with ourselves first, to make art. Excellent video.
Really enjoyed this conversation. I appreciated his candor about living paycheck to paycheck despite what the perception was of his success. What amazing photos you showed of his. I will look him up to see his work.
I love this one. It hits everything that I believe when I started to be serious in photography. I don't care the validation of the others and started working on ehat makes me happy with my art.
Incredibly inspiring video and so much to take in that can be applied to life in general. This is something that needs to be heard by so many! Thanks for doing this video. This one will stand the test of time.
Art is for me and only me, that’s why I shoot, paint and drawer. Others seeing it is a bonus to me, I don’t share a lot of what I create because it’s for me.
Love it!! Absolutely love it, it’s what I need to see when I’m striving and working every day to do what I love every day and take pictures! Agree to the scary, challenge yourself and you never know who you’ll meet and where it goes 👍👍 legends
Retired photographer,of 50+ years. Similar story,a friend of mine.saw my life as a shooter, with not a great income. SO, i also started bying and selling Land, and trading the stock market. HE,said no way you will be good, doing several things. His limited mind, could only handle, one job. Years later, he’s stocking shelves at a resale store. I retired, at 50,with a BIG six figure income. To ALL, don’t let others try to Run YOUR life. And today,at 69 years old, still shooting with a Leica M10M, with the 90mm,f2.2 Thambar.
These types of conversations are soo good for someone who is always looking to learn a thing or two from someone who has already achieved so much and yet they are still hungry to learn and move even further in their life and art.. 🙏🏼Thank you Sir P for such amazing conversation videos.. always a student of you and the art that you create 📸✨
"Art is useless unless someone sees it" is what Oscar Wilde stated in the introduction to "The picture of Dorian Gray". If you read it in the context of the whole thing, you realise... he is right. Useful art is no longer art in its purest form, was the point. His teacher maybe just referred to that.
I agree with the whole context of Oscar Wilde.. But the quote is somewhat right even if it's taken out of context, in a different way though It's likely that the artist saw the art until either is gone, so the art is useful even to the artist.. Be it a tool for creative expression (during the making), self-critique (after it's finished), or as means to put the food on the table (after it's sold)
the website page is a video but its a video with your words showing up, you can be creative with the fonts and how they appear on the screen. its like a blog in a video, you watch the video and you see the words so you can read it as you watch. smile love the energy
I used to watch your videos a few years ago and I just wasn’t vibing with the content. Where as now I’m excited for your work and your video now, it’s fun and light now so thank you for making it
When I started my Astrophotography Channel and all the Social Media that goes into it, I made a commitment to not care about Subs and Likes....I do it to Document my skills and craft, but most of all I do it for fun....Like or Dislike, Sub or not Sub....I work a full time job that pays the bills and take care of my Family. You can take risks, you can take chances, thats ok when your on your own with nothing to lose....But, Your Family is everything..and they are first in my life..... I found my Balance and Peace....and that is what matters. For everyone else that Balance and Peace is different... Art is Not Useless until someone sees it.... Art is Self....Our Expression, our Creativity, our Manifestation.... If it gives Sparks or Ignites feelings in others, all the better.
I would love to have these conversations as a full uncut podcast. Really missing the Matti and Pete show! Matti's podcast was also great. I think these conversations have great potential.
I've stopped posting photos on instagram due to the numbers. I am also afraid of posting reels. I travel a lot and love doing it, but somehow the numbers got to me. It's like I am constantly being judged and looking for validation from others. Which is wild.
Lane, you, and Jay... Bro you all are inspirations! I have my Coup de Tete custom hat, ordering a custom jacket from Master... Pete what the heck am I going to get from you to support the Trio? Much love my brother!
Love it. Specially the part, where is your art good if nobody see it. I struggle with that part with my Art. You are one of the artist who inspired me to start my photography craft and Ignited my fire for photography art and a way out of the military. I LOVE YOUR NEW STYLE, HOLD ON TO THAT. 🤩❤️🔥❤️🔥
Even if your art style is constanly evolving you will always remain the same genuine guy Pete. Im pretty sure thats why most people follow you. Because its feels like you stay true to yourself.
Dude I like your work more now that you're being true to you! But love the honesty there. As someone who just started a TH-cam, I have chased views with review videos and instantly didn't love the process. And in my last camera comparison had a light bulb moment how gear just doesn't matter as much as the person behind it. It's a freeing moment.
As someone who provides for his family with a camera, I really appreciate that Peter didn't downplay the fact that some of us have to shoot the way that keeps us paid.
Recently just picked up an Olympus Pen EE2, made 10 years before I was born. Yes, going back to film makes me want to make art and reenergized my passion.
I shoot 1-2 rolls a week on film. I spend way too much money on cameras. I take the time to go out, photo, scan, organize, and I post them on my Instagram. They get 0-17 likes and I'm absolutely AOK with that. I do it for myself.
excellent video! I always love the open honesty. It sheds some light on what happens behind the scenes and really helps put things in perspective. Also bring back the blog and toss that non-alcoholic espresso-martini recipe up there while you're at it (please)
Really enjoyed this conversation and love the part of forgetting the numbers and being light and happy. Y'all hooked up with Colter Wall yet? A fellow Canadian, insanely talented songwriter. :)

That's a beautiful quote

That’s awesome, congrats you deserve it! How did the client find you or where were you selling your work?
Insane.

Agreed. This resonated deeply
This is so good. A proper conversation about art. Nothing better! Great to see Lane as well!

Lane is such a cool dude. Honestly one of the nicest guys in the industry
I love those conversations. You're a great host: let people tell their stories. Thank you for sharing

The small push I needed to keep moving forward. Thank you Pete.
Started photography because of you Pete! Just got my video featured by Canon yesterday and couldn’t be more stoked 🤘

that fade to black outro moment was so calming 😃
I love these conversations with other artists. It's literally the most visually stimulating "podcast" one can experience.
Art is for me and only me, that’s why I shoot, paint and drawer. Others seeing it is a bonus to me, I don’t share a lot of what I create because it’s for me.

Big fan of these raw conversations with purely talented people and views. Thank you Pete! Definitely keeps my mind on my goals!
How cool to be around people that you inspire and that inspire you. This was 🔥.

Such a good input. Like every creative struggles between these two sides. Financial and creative success.

true art is made from the heart. make art that YOU yourself want to see, hear, feel and become lost in. nothing else matters.
I've stopped posting photos on instagram due to the numbers. I am also afraid of posting reels. I travel a lot and love doing it, but somehow the numbers got to me. It's like I am constantly being judged and looking for validation from others. Which is wild.
I love this podcast style of video! Please make more of these type of relaxed chill conversational type videos totally digging it!
Lane, you, and Jay... Bro you all are inspirations! I have my Coup de Tete custom hat, ordering a custom jacket from Master... Pete what the heck am I going to get from you to support the Trio? Much love my brother!
Peter McKinnon: I'm only shooting film. Also Peter McKinnon walks out with Leica Q series camera.
DAMN YOU PETER!! That's two quotes that I've taken on in the last couple of weeks: "Land some planes" and "The hungry wolf..."
Wonderful, valuable discussion, Peter. Thank you.
Love it.
Specially the part, where is your art good if nobody see it. I struggle with that part with my Art.
You are one of the artist who inspired me to start my photography craft and Ignited my fire for photography art and a way out of the military.

Love idea of a blog. Great video as always, very inspiring.
Hope to see more of these conversations Pete!
Love these kind of videos from you Pete. Bravo!
Really enjoyed this conversation and love the part of forgetting the numbers and being light and happy. Y'all hooked up with Colter Wall yet? A fellow Canadian, insanely talented songwriter. :)
❤️❤️❤️ Fantastic words of advice and a couple of ripper quotes ❤️❤️❤️
You’re thinking of bringing back a blob? What does that mean? A blob of what? Goo? Have you seen the movie, “The Blob”? Outstanding photography in that movie.
Lot of different thumbnails but that one finally pulled me in :P

Those jackets go crazy!!! Great video! Really cool!
Needed to hear this today! So many interesting points of view - great video!
Inspiring. Single mom here and I will just keep on juggling and dreaming out loud. One day my art will be my only ‘job’ but most of all my passion.
yeah if making your art has bought you joy i reckon it has a point and if eventually others get to enjoy it too well thats a win hope ya well peter cheers

That room smells like beard balm, bergamot and aged leather. I am not mad at that tho
“It is art when someone talks about it”. NEB
Even talking to themselves. Art evokes emotion and thought; if you look at anything and it does nothing… it might not be art.
This was a beatiful conversation, I love it. Also, maybe that quote with the Wolf would be a nice theme for Master Supply co products?
Hey Pete! Great video! Loved it all! Best video for this eve, especially those shots where Lane makes some coffee on the open fire wearing the finest leather.
pirate, rebel, and outlaw.
"non-alcoholic espresso martinis."
tickled my funny bone!
all y'alls are awesome in every way!
