My husband and I are pursuing missions full time starting this year and I’ll continue shooting abroad and state side. Thank you for sharing your journey. It changed my life man ❤
Peter you're not just a photographer, or a filmmaker, or a brand even, you're a whole movement man! Reading all these comments about how you inspired people to go into this field is so relatable, I started watching your videos before I even bought my camera. If in 10 years I do 20% of what you did I'm a happy man!
This has to be one of the nicest videos of yours till date. It became great because u narrated it from the depth of your heart and I still feel photography will never die❤️
OMG, epic video, great storytelling Pete, and that sharing of how the caves are formed by Don was 🤯. Thanks for “Making Photos” and inviting us on the journey!
Peter ... you captured the ethos of the American West in these photos. The vastness that defies "near" and "far," the "emptiness" of a land teeming with life, the merge between heavens and earth, and the dignity and pride of its earliest peoples. As a 7th generation daughter of said West, you touched my soul. Your fluency in gear, switching between film, digital, still, video ... epic. Thank you, for all you do.
As a true descendant, you would know that this depiction is overused and tiresome. You’re probably a colonized descendant (if you are truly a descendant)
I wrote I am a descendant of the "American West"; you are reading something else into that. Sorry you feel the legacy and tradition of a people is "overused" and "tiresome" for being depicted in a manner they feel honors their present as well as their past. Why would you also want to cut them off from how they choose to portray, and then share, their images? Somehow I doubt Peter forced them into posing, let alone selected the manner of dress. @@HAlariousInc
@@phillipbanes5484 Never said there was an issue with being a colonized descendant. It’s obvious that colonization will always exist. I simply state it as a way of understanding this situation. From a colonized descendant perspective, this is non-issue and can be seen as a celebration of the history and culture. However in this instance, Peter McKinnon, a person who has no genuine ties to the culture, shapes his vision to represent the extensive culture and rich history of it. This, of course, is acceptable…but its the way he goes about it that’s wrong. McKinnon, who has a very large following, has a responsibility to express a fair understanding and demonstration of the culture and not perpetuate common tropes often associated with it. You don’t just put someone in a headdress so you can get your instagram photos and make a youtube documentary
Strongly disagree, the story of indigenous people told here is highly biased toward a white settler perspective. The photos of Don Peter "made" show the image of the primitive, warrior-chief in a vast wilderness.. An image that is hierarchical and completely out of touch with the realities of life on reservations today, and the history that forced them there. McKinnon says the spent the day with Don learning about his culture, but only a few seconds of those conversations made it into the video, devoid of context. He makes it abundantly clear the primary purpose of his interaction was so that HE could "make" (read as stage) a photo that fits his idea of the Native American. That's not respecting culture, that's objectifying it.
I've learned to appreciate the things around you. I've grown up in Utah my whole life, but I've never visited the amazing landscapes until I started taking photos and video.

As being Navajo, Diné photographer it’s amazing seeing Peter come to where we’re from and taking photos of where our grandparents played in the canyons and him embracing the Navajo culture of where we’re from and seeing the Navajo people representing in this video in an amazing way us something I love. I have also watched Peter for a long time and have to thank him for starting my photography and thank you for representing Navajo people it means so much to me personally ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Was really interested to hear indigenous perspectives on this! Wondered what your thoughts were on the use of the war bonnet? I wrote an essay last term about indigenous representation in photography through history so began to question the motive behind Peter's work (not necessarily negatively!) But just thinking how the western projection and ideologies might be present here, constructing an image that has been made many times before- would love to know your thoughts if you had any!

Peter, your new southwestern style is on point! Well done, dude. I work in the film industry here in New Mexico and two years ago I finally made my way into the camera union! I was a portrait photographer for over 20 years, like you shooting weddings on film and learning what it was like to run a photography studio from my parents. My mom started her studio in 1980! However, with the advancement in digital I started to see that perhaps having a studio like my parents wasn't going to be an option to withstand a career so in 2014 I closed the studio and headed west to New Mexico. I found my way into the film industry as a PA and worked my way into CAMERA. Local 600 ICG and I am proud member. That Don fella is amazing! Watching him tell the story, pointing out the eye and beak, making the sand into sculptures..... I've spent the last year completely rutted-out, not really interested in picking up my camera, "meh, I've got my phone with me..." has been the attitude. You are, and have been, a HUGE inspiration to me and many others. Thank You Peter.
I loved how you used multiple cameras and formats at various focal lengths to document your journey and tell such a heartfelt story, thanks for continuously inspiring us all. Absolute legend.
I stopped taking photos since covid started and I've stopped watching Matti, and Pete since then. This is the first video I've watched since covid, and this inspired me go out again and give photography another try. Thanks, man.
I’ve been shooting film since 2019 and I wonder why I keep going back to it. I love how you talked about it at the end, it connects you to the craft. I told me wife just yesterday, it just feels like you’re making art as opposed to just taking photos. I love it.
I've been thinking about Photography books myself recently, especially as I've been reinvigorated to continue, or more like, pick back up my photography journey. I think that's an important point that you have been on without saying it (at least, I don't think you've specifically said it that way), you've been on the JOURNEY of photography. It is a journey that we all can take if we so choose, and choosing to do so is profound. Thanks Pete, and Capt Kirk. It was moving.
Well, this was refreshing. I feel like you just contributed to the film photography industry by encouraging all your fans to start this journey. Thanks Pete. Also, true. Doing film photography just hits different and feels so good. Also, you then get to say you DID make those photos yourself and not a camera lol. Cheers mate!
These are my favorite photos you have ever captured!! I am looking forward to see the one of Don looking extremely strong and proud on the horse in print then the book comes out! Amazing stuff!
Next level photography! As someone who grew up with film, there is something very different about shooting film. You need to know what you are doing. There are no redo's. We didn't shoot 10 photos because it was too expensive. We never really knew what we had until it was developed. Sometimes exciting, sometimes disappointing. Film is definitely highlighting your skills! Thanks for sharing the journey.
thank you pete for inspiring a depressed 15yo kid back in 2018 to be out there. and for the last five years what I realized is, photography goes beyond than what one might initially think. for me, it's story telling and we are story tellers.
I've started learning how to take photos when I stumbled on your TH-cam, back in 2018. I've learnt so much from you and Matti Haapoja. And now I've recently been on a film as a B cam operator. Everything I've learnt are from you. And just wanted to say how much you and your vids have impacted my life. I also love how you are bringing lite to my people. As an Native American person who is living in Australia I love seeing this. Thank you.
I can't wait to see that book when it's published - Just the captures of don and the woman in Monument valley made me feel something so deeply that I'm confident the whole book is going to impact a lot of people in really profound ways. You're crushing it, man. Thanks for sharing your art and thoughts with the world.
This is why I follow this channel. When I first watched your "Bucket Shot" video it inspired me then. All these years later your videos inspire me now. Love how you approach photography, searching for what pushes you further. Fully inspiring!
Hey Pete, I was a struggling photographer who couldn’t land a gig to save my life and your first video that blew up on TH-cam changed my photography career path for the better, now I do it full time and travel for my job! Thanks to your inspiration otherwise I’d have given up.
I’m glad you used actual indigenous peoples for your photo shoot 👏🏾👏🏾 Also finding someone who can teach you about the lands is even more important. It’s neat to see you push yourself also to try something new.
One of my fellow Marines took his life the other day. I dont know why this comes full circle, but your video has reminded me to embrace the beauty of life, and the simple things, as hard is it may seem. Rest easy, Rob. We love you, brother.
Tengo años siguiéndote y siendo admirador, pero en estos últimos dos años he visto la evolución y madurez a la que haz llegado y es fascinante, respeto.
I have been working as a photographer on a cruise ship for the last 6 months, I came back home 2 weeks ago and when I arrive home, I told myself that I didn’t wanna see a camera near me or do anything photography related but this video !! This video reminded me why I became a photographer, it brought back all the excitement! Thanks Pete !
I’m an IATSE member who left the Navajo reservation to work in the film industry. Monument Valley is on the Navajo Reservation and the headdress and clothing isn’t and was never apart of Navajo culture. I don’t know if this is an actor or background person flown out for this photo shoot. It’s an inaccurate portrayal of the local Navajo indigenous people; stereotypical to how john ford portrayed natives in films.
@@phillipbanes5484I'm a proud conservative and I agree people are too sensitive these days. But only a really ignorant person would think that means there shouldn't be any sensitivity at all. Native Americans have been shat on by the film industry for like a hundred years there's nothing wrong with this guy speaking up and asking for an accurate representation of his people. He was totally reasonable with what he said So instead of whining about how people whine too much try to show a little respect
@@mjmartinejohnwhat the hell are you talking about. He did a whole mini documentary featuring the Navajo nation and the things which are culturally important to them. Yet he makes one wrong choice and he's "culturally insensitive". Don't be such a little brat. We all need small improvements
Geeze, dude...everything about this vid gave me goosebumps. Can't hype up all your mini docs more. Every time I watch one I get a million ideas of my own.
Life has been very hard the past 3 years coming back from amnesia Ive been following pet since 2016 and learning sm and feeling then productivity in his videos today im hard working to get my passion back and thanking you peter for every video you uploaded 🙏
So you flew down to Arizona so that you could stage a cliche photo of a random native guy on a horse because you want a pretty picture for your book? I think you may have missed the point of the book.
fellow photographer here. you’d be amazed at just how much of photography is staged 😂. it all is. from the greats to amateurs. nothing happens by chance. the only style that happens by chance is called street photography and i didn’t see no streets out in that desert
Nah this ain’t it. I thought we as photographers were over this trend of exploiting underrepresented communities for clout. I hope every cent you make from this “photo book” goes directly to the model’s pocket.
Good to see the M6 in there - tactility helps and lets remember - the film was there with you when you were inspired to immortalise a moment, a place or... a bygone age
Nah, this is lame. The only "storytelling" here is about Peter wanting to take a cliche storybook photo of a Native American in a headdress far more than it is telling any story about the subject.
I don't understand what you mean even i mean you watched the video. It's a personal story about him and his photography journey moving to analog photography. And to the part with the photo. Thats how photography works. You have an idea for a photo (doesnt matter if it's staged or not) and then you execute on the idea. You gotta appreciate Peter for taking the pictures of an actual native and not some actor and going all the way to get to know him, his land and the stories he has to tell which just makes the photos more impactful. Anyways, art and photography are subjective and any opinions are true to the person that has the opinion
So..... this is my first comment after watching and rewatching and watching again and again and again. Learning and being inspired and thankful for your incredible selflessness. My hero dude. Seriously. I have bought thousands of dollars of gear based off of your recommendations. I am 15 years in and I currently have a Red Raptor, Komodo, C70, R5c, BLAH BLAH BLAH. My Peter McKinnon NOMATIC bag has been through damn near every airport in America. I might only be who I am because of your dedication to the art and selflessness. Maybe I saw this video at the right time or Im just smoked from 20 hour drive home after a Colorado / Utah shoot. Love you man. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU for all you've done for us. If you release a book Ill be buying 100% Keep it up brother!
Your videos was a big part of me getting into photography and starting a youtube channel 7 years ago. And your videos still inspire me today! Thanks Peter!
I’ve been a subscriber since forever but truly I am now appreciating your work and videos now more than ever. I think your videos were the cutting edge fast paced to me back in the day but now in the world of short attention spans you allow your movies to breathe. I appreciate that a lot.
I am so happy to see another photographer step back and explore film. I started with film and the careful planning, using your best educated guess, not knowing for sure it all worked in your favor until those negatives arrive from the lab or you develop them in the dark room is such an exhilarating feeling. Enjoy Peter!
Often I go through periods of being on TH-cam for work rather than enjoyment so my feed fills up with the same stuff that I become burnt out on but when a video like this comes along, it takes me back to watching stuff for fun and enjoyment and is a great break from it all. Thank you.
Wow, just wow. This video just hit differently, goosebumps! I did this same trip back in 2019. My last big trip before the world closed, and the trip I got engaged to my wife on in Monument Valley. Thank you for taking me back there!
I was in Page the same days as yours. And the fact that I've seen the places that I've been dreamt of for all my life the same time as yours, makes me feel really excited.
Photographer?!? Filmmaker!?!? TH-camr?!?… Yes all of those. But to me you’re simply just the best storyteller there is. Thank you 🙏🏻
Sure, but you need to watch life of riza too
Agreed
That's an awesome attitude to have and to set you above the rest. "'don't take a photo, make a photo".
I loved how you used multiple cameras and formats at various focal lengths to document your journey and tell such a heartfelt story, thanks for continuously inspiring us all. Absolute legend.
The narration, the composure, the feeling...
Pete has totally changed his film style . It's so awesome
I stopped taking photos since covid started and I've stopped watching Matti, and Pete since then. This is the first video I've watched since covid, and this inspired me go out again and give photography another try. Thanks, man.
Gah damn this pumps me up!! ♥️♥️♥️
oh my God the shot of him on the horse is perfection ❤❤❤
I’ve been shooting film since 2019 and I wonder why I keep going back to it. I love how you talked about it at the end, it connects you to the craft. I told me wife just yesterday, it just feels like you’re making art as opposed to just taking photos. I love it.
Ever been brought to tears by the beauty of this earth, and the culture of people who truly cherish and embrace it in a video. That's this one.
I was so excited to see this after your teaser yesterday. Thanks so much for sharing and continuing to inspire us day after day Pete!
Dude, your way to talk and express yourself is so mermerizing ! You give so much motivation for many photographers/videographers !
It was - and still is - magic that happens in that developing tray, teasing out an image from a blank sheet and light, in front of your eyes.
I love passion. Your passion has always been inspiring. Please continue to chase your passion through your journey. Cheers!
thank you pete for inspiring a depressed 15yo kid back in 2018 to be out there. and for the last five years what I realized is, photography goes beyond than what one might initially think. for me, it's story telling and we are story tellers.
Was fascinating to watch! I’m sure it was worth the 20year dream! 📸🎞️
Pete being as real as it gets. Love the new goals!
😂
I've started learning how to take photos when I stumbled on your TH-cam, back in 2018. I've learnt so much from you and Matti Haapoja. And now I've recently been on a film as a B cam operator. Everything I've learnt are from you. And just wanted to say how much you and your vids have impacted my life. I also love how you are bringing lite to my people. As an Native American person who is living in Australia I love seeing this. Thank you.
Incredible man, can't wait for that book, Peter! Thanks for inspiration and for challenging so many of us on pushing your creative boundaries!
jesus, i have goosebumps, ur amazing dude
I can't wait to see that book when it's published - Just the captures of don and the woman in Monument valley made me feel something so deeply that I'm confident the whole book is going to impact a lot of people in really profound ways. You're crushing it, man. Thanks for sharing your art and thoughts with the world.
Keeps inspired Pete. It's your gifts.
Thank you.
This is one of the most soulful projects you've created this far! Stay in tuned Pete ❤
This is why I follow this channel. When I first watched your "Bucket Shot" video it inspired me then. All these years later your videos inspire me now. Love how you approach photography, searching for what pushes you further. Fully inspiring!
A very different Peter McKinnon video than we're used to seeing. Quite possibly the best one you've ever made.
Much better than having a paleface cowboy there
One of my fellow Marines took his life the other day.
He literally said the outfit was an antique. There was nothing said about culture
Thank you for this comment.
Yeah. I don’t blame anyone for making money - but the cultural sensitivity isn’t there. Do better Peter.
Lots of love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Life has been very hard the past 3 years coming back from amnesia
Ive been following pet since 2016 and learning sm and feeling then productivity in his videos today im hard working to get my passion back and thanking you peter for every video you uploaded 🙏
So you flew down to Arizona so that you could stage a cliche photo of a random native guy on a horse because you want a pretty picture for your book? I think you may have missed the point of the book.
100%
Wdym miss the point of the book? It’s his book. He defines the point of it.
Sooooo true
He wanted to get away from tradicional
And fell to the deapest hole of the same thing.
Make photos = stage the hell out of it
fellow photographer here. you’d be amazed at just how much of photography is staged 😂. it all is. from the greats to amateurs. nothing happens by chance. the only style that happens by chance is called street photography and i didn’t see no streets out in that desert
The light in the desert is so good. It does something for my soul every time I get to go there.
You all need to get a grip, just lapping this stuff up. It's embarrassing for everyone.
the term you are looking for is sycophant
Yes, 100%. Look I paid this guy to come be a subject in something so un original.
Sure… you definitely look like someone who know what he’s talking about…
I don't understand what you mean even i mean you watched the video.
Arizona is the place to visit! Seriously so amazing
Your videos was a big part of me getting into photography and starting a youtube channel 7 years ago. And your videos still inspire me today! Thanks Peter!
Just so beautiful....the choice of music with the fantastic shots is a match made in heaven.
haven't seen any of your content for a couple of years now, stumbled upon this masterpiece! SOOOO GOOOOOOD!!!! Keep crushing it bud...
I’ve been a subscriber since forever but truly I am now appreciating your work and videos now more than ever. I think your videos were the cutting edge fast paced to me back in the day but now in the world of short attention spans you allow your movies to breathe. I appreciate that a lot.
Love that you are capturing this and the older generation. I bet you felt in awe the entire time!
your life, is my life goals. Today i have decided no more waiting. I'm going all in. Thank you for your years of hard work, and teaching!
I had forgotten how inspiring you and your videos are, thank you for continuing to upload
@Click_Profile_for._more_info.. aahh shee, for a second I thought Peter had really answered me :(
Thanks Peter for ALL that you do. You inspire me on all levels. Keep doing what you're doing. 👊
I am so happy to see another photographer step back and explore film. I started with film and the careful planning, using your best educated guess, not knowing for sure it all worked in your favor until those negatives arrive from the lab or you develop them in the dark room is such an exhilarating feeling. Enjoy Peter!
Hello 👋, how are you 😊😊😊
Often I go through periods of being on TH-cam for work rather than enjoyment so my feed fills up with the same stuff that I become burnt out on but when a video like this comes along, it takes me back to watching stuff for fun and enjoyment and is a great break from it all.
Thank you.
Beautiful story. Beautiful photos. Your shots and videos so often will bring up such strong emotions for me. It's just a beautiful piece of art. 🎨
Hello 👋, how are you 😊😊😊
"Make the photo" such beautiful advice and amazing video. Love what you're doing with your content now
Wow, just wow. This video just hit differently, goosebumps! I did this same trip back in 2019. My last big trip before the world closed, and the trip I got engaged to my wife on in Monument Valley. Thank you for taking me back there!
Having grown up in Southern Utah my entire life, it's great to see you capture our natural beauty.
Beautiful vlog Pete, your work continues to inspire.
I was in Page the same days as yours. And the fact that I've seen the places that I've been dreamt of for all my life the same time as yours, makes me feel really excited. So much energy from Monument and the desert itself. I've cried a lot and I've seen the most beautiful enviornments in my life. This video is incredible. Thank you for sharing with us.. love you
I love seeing Peter fall in love with and appreciate the landscape of where I live. Awesome video/project.
This photos of yours with a Chife on a horse and a lady just brought a tears to my eyes, how beautiful is this, thank you Peter!!!
Thanks for all you've done to help me and inspire me on my storytelling journey. Seriously couldn't have done it without your videos. I never knew how much I could do until you encouraged me to take the first step. This one really took me back. The last half of it especially. Thanks again man. Keep up the good work
I'm on year 15, but Pete! These photos, might be my favorite photos you have ever taken. I'm in awe.
Loving these videos lately
GReat video. The segment with Don evoked my feelings. Its almost like magic. People like this do not come into your life everyday. Thank you so much for sharing this,
