Another CS fan here. The choices the designers made for the multifunction controls were inspired. It doesn't do everything but what it can do it does well. Also, like the MicroKORG it sounds very analogue compared to other modeled synths..
Wow thank you for showing this! Just bought one of these. I'm old school in that I always prefer simple control knobs/sliders versus deep menu editing. This keyboard and your video shows how easy it is to create cool sounds. I tried a workstation Yamaha but it was way to in-depth for me. This is nice!
Have it, it's good for coming up with ideas for recording, or just playing it on batteries, take it anywhere. The looper is basically a digital recording, all of your pauses will be the same as when you played the keys ( but plays in a forever loop ). The great thing is you can play with the controls to change the sound while the looper is playing.
I have really come to love my Reface CS! There's a simplicity in the flow of the UI & the selection of controls that almost feels classically Juno-esque... It interacts with my sound design impulses in a similarly seamless way, but with (dare I say) a lot more options. This really helped to demystify some of the less "obvious" oscillator choices though, thank you! 🌟🎹
I have these synth and it's one of my favourites. What-you-see-is-what-you-get style, no menu system, great design and the build quality. The most important is the sound - it's fantastic. I think it's about some details, Yamaha done the great job. Im not sure if the guts of Reface CS exists is in other Yamahas? Because im quite sure that in YC61 there are built in engines from Reface CP / YC and DX.
From the moment I heard this synth 6 years ago. I knew it was special. It never got that respect it was due. Because it wasn't full sized and didn't have any on-board user memories. But make no mistake about it. This is a modern classic. And in the right hands. An entire synth pop composition can be made with the reface alone. From the kick drum up. Having the FM filter on-board is the GAMECHANGER. And makes a wider spectrum of sounds possible. Than just a pure analogue could bring forth. I have made drum kits on the reface. And then in a few slider moves. I have a huge vangelesque type pad.
I'm so impressed that the 90s Trance guy didn't go straight for the Supersaw! 😉 Great video. Thanks for sharing. I love my CS. It's featured in all of my videos.
Supersaws are also quite straightforward to create on the reface CS so not a very interesting tip 🤷♂️ That doesn't mean I don't use them occasionally 😁
Hi there ..great channel .. Can you tell me how I can incorporate the Yamaha reface YC to my GarageBand or incorporate it into my AUM app It’s really puzzling me this one 😩 any ideas or advice would be great thank you
In theory you could use ctrlr (the software I'm using in the video) ctrlr.org/ Using the reface YC panel: ctrlr.org/69236/ I never tested how well (or if) this works for garageband though
Hello do you know how I can the output working I’ve my cables plugged in and yes the cable do work and the synth will output sound through the phones port
Ah then we would need an audio interface to record its sounds ? What about using as DAW controller for vsts ? Thanks in advance man for wonderful review , I was in market for something like arturia controllers and stumbled upon this video. Can CS be one with both its own capabilities and Controlling softwares vst synthesizers ? Or the USB is just for updates.
I remember when the cs 80 came out around 1977/8 it was about £5000! Those days! Why doesn't yamaha make the reface series in full size keys 🤔? And at least 4 octaves keybed, and patch memory. Keybed is so tiny that i think this series of keyboards are made for toddler's.

Sort of a hidden gem this synth? Nice work on the sounds, looks like well worth the 300 euro price tag. Quick and dirty little beast!
My Reface CS is coming in the mail today and I am SO STOKED.
I have the CS and it is really good at making Roland Juno 106 type pads.
Just ordered mine, needed something portable and was on the fence for the last few years. Thanks for the video.
I love the sound of this synth, probably the next synth I am buying.

Very good and down to earth tutorial, inspiring sounds and great foundation for future learning of synth sound sculpting. Many thanks Jonas👾💙

its amazing what the valhalla reverb does to the pad.

I a d o r e this synth...easily my go-to. Great tutorial!
Great understanding of synthesis. Thank you.

This arrives tomorrow. I'm so excited
Enjoy !
My original Juno-106 broke recently, so I got a Reface CS as replacement and I am very happy. Too bad, the CS doesnˋt offer a step sequencer.
You can buy a cheap yamaha QX sequencer. And make real magic with the Reface. I do it oldschool. And lay tracks on an Akai Dps 12. Using midi sync.
Excellent presentation. Very useful.
Always quality content!
Thanks for this really interesting tutorial.
My pleasure. Love to have fun with this synth.
Some nice ideas here, thanks, great video!
Thanks :)
SUCH A GOOD REVIEW

Did you unplug the headphones first? When they are connected the outputs are muted. See the troubleshooting section of the user manual.
Tell us how to make the Wonderful Christmastime sound!
My fx section stopped working. When I turn it to distortion then delay works but a short while only. I reset it still same problem.
4:07 sounded so much like Blade Runner
4:20 De-tune the oscillators and you have this: th-cam.com/video/u1ZoHfJZACA/w-d-xo.html
Can you help ? Does it USB also works to record its sound and also make it midi controller ?
Midi over usb: Yes.
Sound: No

Awesome! (thanks)

Its my current favorite as well :)
