    Thanks again! My other issue was the map light. I had also seen a video which I think is not correct, at least for the 2021. In that video he removed the central trim piece so he could remove the light lenses to get at the bulbs. The bulbs are clearly designed to be changed from the back as you showed. But when I tried to remove the whole assembly as you demonstrated, I didn't push the tool deep enough and started removing that thin central trim instead. So you really gotta push that trim tool deep to get the whole unit to pop. Just in case another newbie gets confused.
    This was a great initiation to working on my brand new (150 miles) XSE PP. I'm not so terrified now of ripping off the whole back bumper and cutting a whole in it for the OEM hitch and OEM wiring harness. I've repaired my Dremel tool, bought a torque wrench with a CatsPaw extender for that tight side. I'm determined not to lose the kick sensor for the hatch. By the way the kick sensor doesn't work if the car is on. You have to use the manual switch to open the hatch.

    Jim, this is a great addition. A little disappointing that Toyota on their up scale model could not have included better bulbs. Congratulations to the suppliers for sending these bulbs. Wish my cancer would back off enough so I could do this upgrade. Happy New Years from Glens Falls.

    Thanks for this video, I would not have dared to yank that hard on the overhead dual light & switch assembly if I hadn't seen you do it first. BTW, the cargo area light can be replaced without disassembling the switch assembly. Remove only the gray plastic hood that covers the bulb, leaving in place the gray plastic piece housing the switch assembly.

    I just installed the same lights! Thank you for your video, it was so helpful. Quick question: does your dome lights felt wobble after installation ? All of the other lights are great, just dome lights are not very bright... Maybe I did something wrong ....

      Thanks for watching! Congrats on the new lights! No, they are fine. As long as they dont make noise, rattle, or blink id say youre fine.

    Just let you know that the light in the rear is really more simple to change that the presentation in the video.
    when you have the part that was in the wall, only pop out the gray cap... you can let all the rest there. You will acces the light directly.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried that too but I couldnt get the cover off without removing the whole mechanism.

    • @MontFaucon
      @MontFaucon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just need to take the same tool you use for the trim and lift the gray little box up... take a seconde and you access directly to the light.

      @@JamesKlafehn I wanted to make that comment too, but I actually tried to remove just the gray cover and failed too. I got the two clips loose but the clear plastic on the end has a post that fits in a hole and I couldn't loosen it enough to get it to slide up and off. It SEEMS like it is designed to be removed to replace the bulb without involving the switch, and Sebastien Roy apparently succeeded. So I watched your video that mentioned that there is an extra little tab one side that should be aligned to the receiver side with the gap. That was confusing to me. My eyes aren't so good and I thought it actually was a bump that would short out the gap and turn on the light. Wrong. If you look closely from the side you will see that there is a bent or hinged piece of copper which has a spring underneath that pushes on it to make good contact in the on position. I can't look at it again now, but I think what you are calling a tab is a hinge. So I would say something like the very end of the copper contact in the rocker should contact the solid bar when ON.
      However I pulled that darn assembly apart more times than I'll admit. Perhaps its obvious to everyone else, but I was sitting in my RAV4 enjoying the air conditioning while I moved from light to light. I have the back seats down always for my dog so climbed in there. I didn't test the back light before I pulled off. So I got it all back together and it didn't work. Since you mentioned the switch polarity problem, I figured I must have done it wrong and pulled it off again, struggling with pulling it apart again. I had it the way you said so I tried swapping it in case you were wrong (sorry), which of course didn't work. I tried a different LED and even the original bulb, which also didn't work. By the way you can connect the white assembly to power and hold the switch in place with an LED to test which way it really works. But nothing worked. It FINALLY dawned on me that that light may not work with the hatch closed. DAMN. Once I opened the hatch I was good. LOL (now). Thanks again. I had another issue I'll post separately.

    You only need to pull the gray cover off the cargo light not the clear lens.

  • @c_b5060
    @c_b5060 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the comparison of the backup lights, I expected that you would cover each one of them (by standing next to it) and then see how much the other one illuminates your garage door.

      @JamesKlafehn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are fine. I dont notice a difference really from inside the car. I added some Diode Dynamics lights to my roof rack for reverse. I filmed it but havent had time to edit it.

      Yes the cargo liner. Cause it goes all the way up to the back of the 2nd row so when you have the 2nd row down the surface is still protected. I have the usual WeatherTech cargo liner and i dont have anything when the 2nd row is folded down.

    So is there any way to fix that 2014 Toyota RAV4 EV parked aside on your property and covered with snow?
    You should contact Rich Rebuilds channel. He is nice and knowledgeable enough to help fix that car since that car was built literally with Tesla underpinnings in it. Rich had built plenty of Teslas himself in the past. Plus you both may post on your TH-cam channels the whole process. Isn't that Toyota RAV4 EV rare enough to be intersting to be repaired? You might upgrade the battery pack as well.
    Good luck.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rich is a friend of mine. He knows all about it. No one has the Tesla software so there isnt much anyone can do about it. Just toyota and they are refusing to work on it.

    • @nevco8774
      @nevco8774 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EV West TH-cam channel literally install Tesla powertrain in any collectible fossil ICE car. I imagine they use their own electronical modules thus as I understand there is no need for Tesla software.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nevco8774 Yeah, if you use custom modules and boards then you dont need the tesla sofware.

    To my way of thinking, brighter isn't always better. (If brighter is better, why not wire up a bulb that's normally used as a headlight?) The lights over the sun visors would usually be used after sundown. A brighter light would affect your night vision more and for a longer period of time. Just sayin'.

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but I dont think any of these lights are too bright.

    • @jomojigz
      @jomojigz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had mine replaced all interior lights with Philips LED 8000K (Vanity lights, sun visor lights, boot light except rear passenger dome light 6000K), the puddle lights also uses LED 8000K, I would not say too bright, but its way much better than before, its been more than a year, no issue.
