Highly appreciate your early morning philosophy. A rushed furtive start is no way to begin a day. You've got it right.
Food - on my End to End, my lunch was almost invariably a meat pie, a banana and a pint of milk, leaning on a litter bin outside a Spa or similar.
Can't beat a bit of loin girding.
Also can't beat 'golden encounters' along the way.

I was laughing out loud at the beginning of this post; that thing discussed in an earlier post of yours, where time seems to have a will of it's own, when on an adventure.
Whatever you do; however early you get up, or however much preparation and forethought you put into it; the morning always seems to race away towards lunchtime.
It's that catch 22 of not wanting to be too regimented; but also wishing to make the most of every minute..haha..
I always have exactly the same problem; but despite kinda giving in and accepting it for what it is. I still catch myself contemplating it..usually in the morning, on holiday or on an adventure; then chuntering to myself for doing it!
You were lucky, to not only to be gifted by the kindness of a stranger; but also the unnaturally beautiful weather, up on the pennines.
Look forward to part 3..take care Jethro.

Good result with the caravan, I take back all the things ive ever said about farmers.
(well, some of the things at least)
Now i thought i was a lazy traveller with my up at 8, and peddling by 9 policy. But 10.30?
One thing i do find is the morning gets wasted, somehow stopping for a coffer takes and hour, especially after 2 cappuccinos, then i get chatting to someone, before i know it its midday, and ive done 10 miles out of a planned 60.

Yeah coffee and people being friendly really eats into a schedule doesn't it! 😉
A nice cafe pops up and you think a quick breakfast will actually give you the energy to make some miles and it ends up taking hours.
This is why the best tours are the ones with no end date booked. I love that feeling of it not mattering if I start late or get distracted because there is nowhere I have to be.

This looked like a lovely place to end the day on where is this farm and does he rent that static caravan out? I seriously need a nice peaceful place to chill out this year and that looks idilic 👍 I’m researching how hard it will be to do this route in one go for a charity ride, and it looks bloomin tough for a continuous ride in a couple of days! I have a friend who’s done it in a couple of days before but looking at this video I never realised how tough that must have been! Nice one, I look forward to watching the rest. 👍

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've never one for endurance challenges or pushing myself to the limits on rides. I go pretty slow and don't cover any great distances. I'm sure there are people who could bash this out in a couple of days (think it is just a shade over 200 miles) but I don't think I could have done it much faster than I did.
I'm assuming simply by the fact that you are looking into it that you are a more hardcore rider than me though so maybe you'll crack it!
It is bloody hard, the surface of rough and the hills are steep and constant
It's a great ride though, I definitely recommend it.

I don’t know about hardcore anymore, lockdown weight has buggered me up for months! Struggling to get back into shape now I’m having to ride to work again. But it’s coming off slowly. A friend of mine had a daughter that’s got Leukaemia and she’s raising money for charity. She’s an absolutely hardcore rider and puts many of us old folk to shame. So this year the club is doing a how far for Evie challenge and I was wondering what challenge I could set myself. Coast to coast is probably the easy option but this seems like a heck of a lot more of a challenge! In as few days as possible. I recon the better half would allow me three days max before She starts to think I’ve run off with someone else LOL so it needs to be a short sharp challenge! This is the first set of videos that I’ve seen that properly document a lot of the route so thanks for uploading, I know how much effort goes into filming these, and my adventure will have to skip a lot of filming if I’m to make it in good time.

The tour divide is something that looks like a crazy challenge! I do wish that I’d had the drive to do something like that when I was younger. It gets harder to find time to do fanciful stuff like that as you grow older and justify the time away from family and work etc. Just reading a book called ‘The last English man’ it’s a book about someone walking the Pacific crest trail, now that’s something I could probably do when I retire LOL

I did, twice, but it was declined. The chap's response was 'It wouldn't be a favour if I took any money'.
He said he has done some backpacking in the past and remembered the value of a comfy bed at the end of a day. He didn't even want to hang out really, just made sure I was comfy and left me to it. True kindness for the sake of kindness.
I once got invited to lunch by a couple in a little town in Norway who had converted an outbuilding in their garden into a bunkhouse for passing cyclists. They had beds for about 6 people, a shower, a little workshop, all offered for free to anyone who passed by. They had been cyclists in the past and remembered similar kindness that they had received from others and how much those simple gestures can mean.
I love these encounters. They renew one's faith in humanity.

Hey Jethro! I’m planning to do the the same trail in the next month and I’m just wondering how did you get by in regards to food and eating regularly?

    • @JethroJessop

Hey! I set off with enough food for a few days but actually you can find supplies at least every other day.
The route passes through a few towns and most of them have some kind of shop plus pubs and cafes. If you are anything like me though, take a lot of snacks! It is a really hard trail, rough surfaces and lots of steep climbs and I was constantly stopping to eat. Unless you are an absolute machine you will be pushing a fair bit and having something to snack on mid-climb is always nice.
When you pass through Settle I highly recommend the 3 Peaks Bike Shop Cafe in the main square. Really good bike shop if you need any bits on the way and a really good cafe - best fry up I've had for ages. It is also right next to the co-op.
I think I stopped for supplies in Glossop, Barnoldswick and settle and I stopped at a couple of pubs for lunch when the presented at the right moment.
Take a filter of some kind and you will be sorted for water as there are hundreds of little streams you can fill up from.

@@zacmckee4554 thanks, glad to be off help. Happy to answer any other questions if I can.
If you go to my channel page there is a link to my Strava where you can see my exact route on each day, might be helpful.

@@JethroJessop I’m hopefully start by end of June when it’s full blown summer. This will be my first bikepacking trip so looking forward to it. What map did you follow actually, where did u get ur map from?

@@zacmckee4554 Wow, not starting easy then?! ;)
If you are doing it in height of summer take decent sun protection as it is really exposed. You will be cycling in the full sun with very little shade. It will likely also be very dusty on some sections.
Take a filter of some sort and take advantage of every stream to refill bottles. I got through at least 3lt each day and though I got good sunny weather it wasn't super hot for me.
Be super careful about open flames if you are wild camping. I imagine in hot dry weather those hills would light up pretty easy!
I used the gpx file from the official page: www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/trails/pennine-bridleway/
I just loaded it up in Viewranger using the OpenCycleMap tile set which is all free.
I didn't take a paper map but it is incredibly well signposted to the point that you could ALMOST do it without a map. Almost, I did go wrong a couple of times ;)

Ditch the tropical jungle hat its makes your conversation appear more boring as it is.

Nah, I love that hat. And I don't think choice of headgear has much impact on conversation to fair. The hat is there purely to keep the weather off and does a grand job so I'll hang on to it.
