THE PENNINE BRIDLEWAY… on Gravel Bikes!

The Pennine Bridleway is notoriously known as a Mountain Bike route, stretching 205 miles from Derbyshire to Cumbria, but we’re Team Spectra so we went and rode it on Gravel Bikes.
It was a hard route in 30degree heat with big ambitions to finish this in 2 days but it was a lot of fun along the way.

Fair play. Day 1 alone would have killed me!
I rode it end-to-end but it took me... ahem.... 6 days :) Even the thought of doing it in 2 makes my body hurt!
In my defence I was fully loaded with food and camping gear but even without all that it is probably the hardest route I've ever ridden and I've never pushed up so many hills before. I recognised lots of the spots you filmed though and got a little nostalgic tingle so cheers for that (except the gates. The gates were a pain).

Some superb Pennine packhorse trails there with the lovely worn stone setts. We rode the Mary Townley Loop a couple of times on full rigid bikes with 26" wheels and felt absolutely beasted by the end of the day. Then somebody invented suspension forks and that made a difference to the fatigue. I'd love to do the loop now, 30 years later with roadie fitness and on a modern bike with huge wheels, disc brakes and suspension to see what a difference that makes. Great video though, well done and well ridden!

Thanks for the great video Beth - very entertaining, especially Jaffa Cam! I'm planning doing The Great North Trail this summer with a group and am really unsure of how far to aim each day. For the first couple of days though (basically what you've done here) we are looking at about 70 miles / 110kms as the terrain looks really rough. I still think that will be tough enough as we are probably a bit older and slower than your team and will be on MTB rather than gravel.

Great adventure! I was wondering if I could cycle this on my gravel bike. Will def give it a go. I recognised all the sections as ridden them on the MTB. The descent into Hayfield campsite is pretty techy. And that steep down bit near South Head is steeper than it looks on camera. Good effort in that heat too! Found your vid via a search, now subbed.

Its a beast - you did way better than me. I decided to take it on as a first bikepacking trip. I was supposed to go with a mate but he couldn't make it so i went solo. Did a there and back, got as far as diggle - fully loaded on a cronky mountain bike. Total 120miles but over 3 days. The section down to Chee Dale and then back up is quite something. I'll go back and do the rest some day

It looked an epic ride Beth, you guys did amazing ! gravel miles way more intense that road miles especially in that heat. Im fancying gravel riding looking for a bike now not sure what to go for. Im looking at Ribble, Focus, Cannyon way too much choice. The Vitus bikes you road looked good.

Did you manage to go back and complete? We are deciding to go from Appleby back to to Glossop fully loaded so hopefully see how we get on. Looks a tough route, some of the climbs look manic. Going to do it on a gravel bike so I know we'll ve absolutely tired out. It'll be a great adventure.
