      Imagine writing a story or a movie script or devising any piece of art. Some characters would have to be terrible people or go through terrible things or the story would have no meaning. "You can't cherry pick the bible". Yes actually you can and should cherry pick the bible. Especially if you're going to go cherry picking regardless in some other place. Evolve your religion with you based on your needs and desires; there's plenty of ways to conceptualize God that will mesh with your current understanding. The stereotypical version of religion; what's actually in the book and what you can interpret for yourself with 21 century knowledge are 3 different things; 2000 years of philosophy from some of the greatest philosophers to ever exist isn't worthless simply because our society seems to have focused on other avenues. In a similar vein to body; cells; DNA our understanding or capabilities to communicate with some 'divine' being may be in some in between stage. Perhaps the meaning becomes more obvious given certain circumstances; although quite a bit can be pulled from both testaments in relation to many aspects of life and structure. Nomenclature; repeating myths/legends; similar/overlapping symbols; speech. It also has a good way of attracting people with a grandiose view of themselves; which lends an easy way to spot them out or identify them. The quiet kid gone school shooter is almost the same sort of story or imaginings as Jesus; these individuals are however, unable to save anyone and thus often resort to violent actions to fulfill their fantasy.

      I feel like there's some cross road people like us(x-christians) and creationists come to.
      Before I became an atheist I realized either all of the bible was a lie or all of science was a lie because of all the inconsistencies between a literal interpretation of the bible and what science says.
      After a deep critical dive into both biblical history and the natural sciences I just couldn't trust any part of that book.
      I wish they would too turn to evidence and reason and not just blind faith but they've made their choice and it deeply saddens me.

      +Cavecat No, not at all. YOU need to read YOUR BIBLE! Abraham had 3 wives. Many other bible stars had more than one wife .. However ... If you are like me and like to read through a document completely .. you will notice God has set some limits as on to how many you may have. Instructions on how to deal with second and third wife etc ... are available to all who have a Bible with the Old Testament. Christian scholars have long debated what the number is that is acceptable to God. Most of our heros from Our First Testament had on average 4 wives. Since Abraham . the guy that God first decided he wanted to chat with ever had 3 ... It is considered the best amount of wives.
      Acceptable amount as set in stone by Our Bible is: .. God suggests more than one BUT not more than four unless you are rich and can take care of them according to the rules he sets forth in a previous chapter in his book. ....... So it is written .. so shall it be done!!!!!
      Cavecat ... Nowhere in our beloved Bible does it say you have to marry them at any schedule ...
      So ... Hope I could help .. i have to run now ... Got my cross necklace on and my copy of the Bible .. I'm behind ... Still looking for wife #2 .... Bye .....

      I read it regularly, to try to find things I missed at 7. Like god lied 82 times. I guess they're good lies. Like, "I will love those who love me for 1000 generations & will hate those who hate me for 3 or 4 generations," I guess, he's going to toss a coin. So, if your grandfather loved him, you better hope your father loved him also, or you're going on the naughty list.

      +Master Markus I rather ask you have you red the Bible? If you red the Bible systematically, not cherry picking, then you must know that: In Genesis 1,3 we read that 'god' created light on the second day of creation. In 1,14 we read that he created the sun on the fourth day of creation. It is totally wrong. Then also in Genesis 1 we read that 'god' created 1. Plants, 2. animals, 3. man But in Genesis 2. we read that he created 1. man, 2. plants, 3. animals. So, what is right, what wrong. Then also in Genesis 1,27 we read that god created man and woman together, but in 2,23 we read that he created man alone and later the woman So, which is? These exampled are in the beginning of the Bible. So is throughout the Bible

      +Terry Shulky yeah, but the problem with smaller dinosaurs is that if they were small and couldn't regulate their body heat they would die out as the earth was gradually cooling. And not all dinosaurs were carnivorous; some were insectivores and omnivores, if not complete herbivores. Those that adapted would become the ancestors of animals we have today.

    • @Wombat1916
      @Wombat1916 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Poodlekisses The research over the last few years, with the discovery that theropods had feathers, indicates that they probably were warm-blooded. Theropods of all sizes seem to have been carnivorous, from T Rex. downwards. The smaller ones would have been able to feast on mammals. Do you think the KT event didn't happen? There was massive volcanism when the dinosaurs bowed out - ever heard of the Deccan Traps? There is a massive crater off the coast of the Yucatan circa 65 million years old. All over the world at what used to be called the K-T boundary there is a thin layer of mud with large amounts of Iridium. The Earth was gradually cooling?
      Birds are the only surviving branch of the dinosaurs, btw.

      Xyander Better late than never. As an eight year old, I could clearly see that Santa and god were just pretend. Santa had the same handwriting as my mother and god had the same behavior as my baby sister. She always threw tantrums and wanted constant attention. I knew that a real god wouldn't act like a four year old girl. It was obvious to me that during the week I was being taught facts in school, but on Sunday mornings and evenings I was being taught assertions, presumptions, absurd supernatural claims, prejudices, personal opinions and beliefs about things, that for the most part, I had understood to be blatant lies. I was taught that lying was wrong and yet I was consistently lied to by adults. I was told that what I was being taught by the Church were not lies, but was what they called "a matter of faith"; and faith was very important. I was not fooled by this religious spin... this revered dishonesty troubled me greatly. Faith is pretending to know things that you don't and lying about it.

      Dogma Disputant We are in the same boat. I was up front of the church when they were all praying for the kids and the guy pushed me for some odd reason and I was thinking 'if the holy spirit which is more powerful than this dude, why does it need a hand on my head and for him to push me?" Not to mention that I just couldnt understand how 2 of everything got on a boat or how 1 man built it with his family with no modern technology and I just had to accept it as "God helped him" though it took god a damn month to write down the 10 commandments which isnt even really the 10 commandments your taught and had to write them again so there is another month to write down those 10 same commandments. Oh and the way I found out Santa wasnt real was seeing my parents putting presents under the tree because I had to go pee, seen them stacked up in the closet.
      But Evolution aside, genesis has no ground to stand on, its all been taken away, light before the sun, the sun moon and stars are suspended in a water vault or canopy, flat earth has all been proven wrong through observation. Watching some of these people say some of these things like "if 2+2=5 was in the bible I would believe it" kind of bullshit just shows that there is so much more that is wrong with mankind that anyone could ever solve. You could take these people up into space, show them the world is spherical and you can orbit around it and they would still say the bible is correct. I dont know if I just dont give a damn of what people close to me think of me and these guys are the complete opposite, or if there is something fundamentally wrong with their brain.

      The theory of evolution is not theoretical. Science uses specialized terms that have different meanings than everyday usage. These definitions correspond to the way scientists typically use these terms in the context of their work. Note, especially, that the meaning of “theory” in science is different than the meaning of “theory” in everyday conversation. In the scientific world a theory is the highest level of achievement. Scientific theories explain facts. They are abstract inferential explanations. Theories are the foundation and thus the most important ongoing accumulation of knowledge for all the sciences. A hypothesis is made on an observation that is later confirmed (or disproved) many times to learn a 'fact' about the universe. Then the answer to WHY that fact is that way, is a theory. Some examples of scientific theories are the evolution theory, the heliocentric theory, the atomic theory of matter, germ theory and the theory of gravity. In ordinary colloquial language a 'theory' is a fact. We know that objects fall when dropped (a fact). Why? The THEORY of gravity.
      There is absolutely no validation for any theological speculations. Evolution on the other hand is validated by the overwhelming amounts of evidence spanning six distinct fields of science. There is validation in geographical distribution, geological strata, the extensive transitional fossil record, modern medicine, comparative physiology, and comparative genetics. And even if five of those examples never existed, the study of DNA and genetics all by itself is enough to confirm common ancestry as an undeniable fact. This is all common knowledge that is easily available to anyone who wishes to know. The evidence for evolution can be found in biology text books and in public displays like the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and the Chicago Field Museum.
      Evolution is the most tested and supported theory in the history of modern science. There are over 250,000 published (in main stream scientific journals), peer reviewed (in main stream scientific journals) scientific papers on evolution, in the past 150 years. How many bronze age myth fables have been published in these journals?

    • @samaurijacked
      @samaurijacked 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have made good points. Some of which are factual, others less so. For one. There are many competing theories disproving the methods used in the field of genetics to obtain proof of common ancestry. The theory of evolution is not an undeniable fact in any sense of the term. What we know and what we can observe about our historical ancestry cannot be improved past certain points no matter how many papers are written on supporting evidence found using modern science. At a point we come to the conclusion that any competing theory cannot possibly hold more evidence and still co exist with the science based evidence supporting the existing theory. We assume that because the support for evolution outways any other theory scientifically, that It must be the truth. When in actuality nothing can truly be proven in the true sense of the word. We can observe and measure things to the extent where we can be confident that they are proven, But it is impossible for there to never be the possibility of miscalculation or misinterpretation causing an inevitable uncertainty of the undeniable factuality of something. What Im trying to say is that anything that can be "proven" has to be subject to uncertainty, because we can only way what we consider to be fact, against what is not supported by found evidence. If another side of an argument (about an existence of a theory) is existent then no matter what, one side cannot be proven 100%. Just really close.
      So technically speaking it is impossible for something to be non theological and therefore the theory of evolution cannot be proven. Its just the best guess you've got.

      samaurijacked There is more directly observable evidence to support the theory of evolution than there is to support the heliocentric theory. The evidence is literally at your fingertips right now, waiting for anyone with the courage to look it up and the honesty to recognize reality even when it contradicts their longest held and most deeply cherished beliefs. It's no longer a matter of belief or choosing to believe the evidence. The reservoir of evidence is so vast and deep that denial of evolution is perverse. Refusing to look at the evidence for evolution cannot make it less true.

    That "If the Bible would say 2+2=5 to be right, I'd believe it" is a Theology of the Bible called Fideism. It presupposes the Bible to be absolutely right. And Answers in Genesis (among other hardcore Creationists) adheres to that philosophy and even states it bluntly in their Statement of Faith. "How does evolution deal with death"
    Well, to be nitpicky, evolution doesn't deal with death. It isn't a living thing. But really (I can tell that this is directed at atheists, so I will use us) we deal with death by thinking "Well, it'll be like before we were born" I used to be afraid of dying when I just converted to atheism (grew up, in other words lol) but now I say "Meh, I don't have to set my alarm clock anymore" that's how I deal with death. You just think you will go to a magical place where everything is all good. In other words, heaven is a stoner's room. Apparently that needed to be a bribe for Christians on top of the threat of hell. So this raises a question: Why do Christians think that Atheists are Nihilistic, amoral douchbags, while Christians need to be bribed with eternal bliss and threatened with eternal suffering to keep them from doing the same things considered amoral?

    Actually that answers in genesis guy answered the question of why will christian choose the bible over reality and it's really kind of sad but it's that these christians are afraid to die and for there not to be a heaven waiting for them. They are afraid of their consciousness ending and simply being nothing, but this is a reality they will sadly have to face (like everyone) that when we die that's it. There is nothing after that, and it will be over for us. It's not as scary as they think it is though.

    • @Charlotte_Martel
      @Charlotte_Martel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nightshift10000 Ending of consciousness is easy. I think it's more a fear of hell. Even if there's only a .0000001% chance of it being real, they feel that it's still taking a gamble on being tortured for eternity. When you're a child, it's easy to become indoctrinated and to retain some fear of hell for the rest of your life.
      Oddly, Jesus and Paul seem to disagree about what happens to nonbelievers. Jesus has everyone who didn't follow him being sent to lakes of fire, while Paul just has them dead with no afterlife. If Paul's version had won the day, there would be far fewer Christians. Unlike the Muslims, Christianity doesn't really sell its heaven. Only the fear of hell makes one convert and keeps him/her in the faith.

    Sorry, but attacking their ideas is the same thing as attacking them, at least from their perspective. Remember, they used to *set people on fire* for disagreeing with them. That's a measure of how personally they take any criticism of their ideas. The mere fact that they can no longer set people on fire for disagreeing with them must make them feel very persecuted indeed. Anyone who goes from such a position of privilege to being merely equal to everyone else is going to feel that they have been persecuted and treated unfairly.

    • @tofu_golem
      @tofu_golem 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grass hair Calling it a death cry is wishful thinking. We have certain kinds of bad thinking hard-wired into our brains because it helped our ancestors survive (e.g. hyperactive agency detection).
      It would be better if you resign yourself to the fact that religion will always be with us in some form, and concentrate on attacking the bad arguments. You'll never get people to change those conclusions, but if you can get people to stop using bad arguments to support conclusions, then there is a chance you'll improve the quality of decisions they make when they contemplate other conclusions.

    • @grasshair7266
      @grasshair7266 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul T Sjordal True enough Paul but I can dream. I gave up 20 odd years ago trying to change people and instead try for reasoned arguments. Then again their are religions in the past which have slowly died out over time. It is becoming harder for many organized religions to keep their flock in the dark. A few years ago I considered myself agnostic due to what I considered religious experiences I had in my late teens. Years later with the help of the internet and some extremely well informed scientists I found what I deemed reasonable explanations for my experiences. I often wonder how many people have gone through similar experiences with the advent of this the dawning of the age of information.

    • @tofu_golem
      @tofu_golem 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Grass hair I'm more concerned with how people think than with what people think.
      A number of studies suggest to me that ideology plays very little role in our moral decisions, so even if we could get religion to go away, I don't think the human experience would change very much. We might start making different bad decisions, but we would still make bad decisions.
      As far as I'm concerned, worrying about religion is worrying about the symptom instead of the disease, and the disease in this case is sloppy thinking. If we can get other humans to be less sloppy in their thinking, then we can have a real impact on the world even if they continue to cling to these particular conclusions on this particular topic.

    • @grasshair7266
      @grasshair7266 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul T Sjordal Well yes your right I do agree with you. I do not loose sleep over religion and I have never been concerned with religion until it began to affect political decisions and try to change our education system. In these cases the disease of sloppy thinking is having a direct effect on our children. When you see how hard creationists are trying to discredit Darwin and change social reform which has taken centuries to put into place it concerns me. I felt the need to challenge crazy dangerous ideas. I have no desire to change people just challenge people and I hope to get the same in return.

    I just went from hating these people, to feeling somewhat sympathetic towards their plight. These people cling to their religion because the thought of no after-life is too devastatingly sorrowful. In essence, he is choosing to reject Darwinism because he wants to feel hope. He can only justify his religion by describing how good it makes him feel. Sad. And quite pathetic really.

    I've not forgotten where I started. There was a time, long ago, when I too believed in God. As a result of life experiences, education and lots of talking & studying, I was able to take that necessary leap of reason toward rational humanism and then finally to the positive atheism that I affirm and self-identify with today.
    What's the point? It's that I don't condemn nor ridicule "believers" when I encounter them. I patiently try to share with them about my journey and my beliefs today. I avoid confrontation like the plague (no Biblical reference intended)...and I don't like to name call. I adamantly believe that nobody learns new ideas better or faster through humiliation....not the piano, not calculus, and certainly not new liberating perspectives on the stultifying effects of supernatural beliefs on the human personality.
    I know it's not popular but I really prefer evangelizing for free-thinking with science and reason...respectfully, logically, clearly. If that doesn't work...fine. At least I've left the blind with the seeds of possibility. And without the bitter aftertaste of an encounter with a hostile, condescending atheist...which I certainly can be. I don't begrudge other fellow atheists their choice to approach it their way but...call me crazy...my way works for me. Although I realize other atheists may not even care if "a creationist comes to Darwin", but I do.
    I can drag & beat a horse toward water but I can't make him drink.

    Am I saying god is an animal? No. I'm saying god is a fictional being that one species of animal has been known to imagine. Also, I think Christians who are so deeply offended by the very concept of being in any way the same thing as other species of animals need to learn to have a lot more respect for animals. Animals can think, feel, some are self aware, some demonstrate empathy and compassion, and some are capable of metacognition. I think understanding how wonderfully complex animal thought and interaction is is so much more beautiful than assuming everything in the world is dictated by one magic man.

He seems to be claiming that no manuscript of the bible could have an error. But probably he doesn't even imagine there is 2000 year long history of textual copy involved in the Bible and that the text of the Bible used by the KJV translators was carefully edited; he can't conceive reading two Biblical manuscripts with different readings or having to decide between them.

    Let's make this simple: Religion and Science aren't opposed. They are only opposed to the close minded.

    • @lucklinni5011
      @lucklinni5011 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's make this complicated because reality is complicated: The scientific process requires you to use scepticism. If you have faith in what the results will be in scientific experiments, you might be proven right or wrong, but if it's wrong and your belief is too strong you might deny the science and make excuses for why something is true that isn't.
      I'm not saying you mustn't have a religion because I believe in the right to choose, but as a scientist I feel it's important to avoid confirmation bias in order to find the truth.
      There might be a God for all I know, but I can't be religious or have faith in that because science is about acknowledging you don't know until you get the answers, and religion is about having faith even if you're tested by doubt or a lack of definite proof. I'm not closed minded because I understand I don't know and God could be real, but it would be unscientific of me to act on the assumption that something that hasn't been proven scientifically is real.
      If scientific data convinces me there's a God I'll believe it.
      Science doesn't mean there's no God, but you'd be a failure as a scientist if you believe anything without proof, and you'd be a failure as a religious follower if you wouldn't believe without proof.

    • @onyx1186
      @onyx1186 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hmm as a scientist you can have faith in something more than yourself... be it god, the universe or what ever have you... but the important thing is to understand that you are biased, and that you have to do what ever you can as a scientist to ensure that your experiments and conclusions do not have your bias within it... I get where your coming from... Being a scientist does mean your skeptical, however, your personal faith should never get in the way... Just because I personally believe in a higher power I still understand the importance of empirical evidence and don't spout my beliefs as being the end all be all solution.. just as further information, I have a bachelors degree in Biology, and a minor in psychology, so don't get me wrong... i get where your coming from for sure, since it does seem the two fields of science and faith are at odds with one another, but really they are not.. Science has nothing to say on faith and faith has nothing to say in opposition to science and really religion should be all for it because the more we learn through science the more we understand how complex and amazing our universe is.

    • @thesurvivorssanctuary6561
      @thesurvivorssanctuary6561 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luck Linni That's a very Christian view of religion. Many religions require no faith, and faith can be an all encompassing term.
      Even the sensations that you use to perceive the world are taken on faith, and we take it on faith that world even exists at all. I mean seriously? You'd have very few opinions if you didn't believe anything without empirical evidence.
      I digress though, using Christianity as the basis for religion, we still see that science and religion are not incompatible. It's only when we make the choice of them being incompatible that they are.
      Essentially, we decide that one is right and superior. When in fact the categories where the two have overlapping ideas is small and minor, and most of two have nothing to do with each other.
      Religion is mostly philosophy, or ideas about how to think, act, believe, behave, and moreover about how to be. Whereas science is more like logic. A precision tool we use to understand the world.
      Science will never provide all the answers, as the human race will not exist long enough. Religion is in place to give us answers to the questions with no answer.

    • @lucklinni5011
      @lucklinni5011 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kent Brockman I get that. I wouldn't describe religion and opinions as the same thing though. Religion tends to encompass practices and beliefs meant to be followed, but opinions are by nature subjective. I can have particular ideals based on my needs and experiences which result in placing a lot of value in something that someone with different experiences and as a result different values may be less able to appreciate. Thus, different opinions are formed based on perspective.
      A religion is generally a code to be followed overriding personal desires and opinions, and certain facets of it are taken as universal facts without any proof. That is where I find it clashes with the scientific process, in a way that opinions by their subjectivity do not. Case in point: Creationists above refusing science because evolution doesn't match what they read in the Bible. They are taking every word of the Bible as fact, and taking science that contradicts it as therefore false. If the Bible is not up for debate and has to be true no matter what, any discoveries regardless of how much proof there is behind them have to be scrapped if they contradict that. Science doesn't work that way. You can't get accurate science if you have un-budging pre-conceived elements that have to be taken as fact before anything else is considered. That is closed-thinking.
      The reverse isn't true. In science, anything we don't know is true could potentially be true. We don't act on the assumption that it is and often have to act on the assumption that anything that hasn't been proven shouldn't factor into an experiment unless it is what is being tested at that time. There are things we know little to nothing about, but the possibility of them exists. Knowing that you don't know is a key part of science. There are however a number of things we do know that contradict the Bible, because they are things that have been scientifically proven. This is also the case for a number of other religious texts.
      We could try re-interpreting the texts and taking certain things as metaphors that were previously taken literally, but what's the point in making excuses for an ancient book? The people who wrote it lived before we knew some things that we do now, so it seems backwards to assume they have to be right no matter what even if we know things they didn't.

    • @thesurvivorssanctuary6561
      @thesurvivorssanctuary6561 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luck Linni I'm not going to argue that you need religion. That's an entirely personal choice.
      I will give you an interesting idea though. Back in the 1600s Jewish Kabbalists were revolutionizing the way those secluded spiritualists were looking a the Bible/Torah. A good many of their most respected ideas were interpretations of the holy book beyond the literal scripture.
      Creationists don't follow the Bible, and they certainly aren't Biblical scholars. Instead they listen to the dogma their priests say, and generally don't even read their holy book. The idea that the earth is 6000 years old came from Chassidic Rabbi scholars who believe that Moses wrote the Bible.
      The majority of the scholarly community is in agreement that the Bible was an oral tradition before it was ever transcribed. I mean, there are even errors in many translations where the scribes notes (the ones who rewrote the aging ancient scripts) were accidently left in the Bible. (One reason it seems like we have more then one creation story being told in Genesis)
      The old texts are history, and just like the ancient Greek god pantheon they tell of god-kings, prophets, wars and power shifting hands. The interesting part of religion isn't the dogmatic bullcripe that's been used through the centuries to control the populace.
      It's that so many diverse and sometimes entirely isolated civilizations and people have had the same spiritual experiences. That the human story extends to realms that we've yet to understand. Whether that's metaphysical, psychological, or an interesting mixture of the two is up to debate, but what's not is the fact that these experiences exist and anyone can have them.
      Anywho, religion is more then dogma, but unfortunately many are taught that scripture is king. Which is hilarious, (in a sardonic sense), because now the word of God has become a new idol to distract from the teachings.
      So, a learned and open mind is not bound to any constricting rule, but unfortunately many are simply taught the dogma that spirituality means unquestioning obedience to some arcane laws of conduct.

      Definitely, most atheists turn to secular humanism, which is an extremely moral and positive outlook. Recognizing that this is the only life we have is important, it improves desire to improve our condition and ensures that we are in this together. The sad thing is that Secular Humanists are actually the most accepting, they dont adhere to some religion and dont mind if religious people keep their faith. Its just the second that they try to force it upon other people, inject their unsupported beliefs where it doesnt belong, and mute the voices and rights of those who dont hold their beliefs is when religions becomes a problem. The problem is that most religions tend to involve indoctrination of youth, it demands that children be brainwashed into unquestioning loyalty and claims that those who dont believe are evil. Religious indoctrination includes the idea that without religion, humans are immoral demons, when in reality thats not true. Secular countries have the lowest crime rates, better health, and overall happier citizens that allow people to hold their beliefs and converse. Religions has hijacked the numinous and morality, it claims to be the source of truth when in reality its the source of ignorance and stubbornness. Without indoctrination and bold faced lies most religions wouldnt last beyond a generation. I look forward to the day that humanity transcends archaic modes of thought and learns to deal with reality as it is.
