I stumbled into this podcast this week and I am already loving every episode I have watched. I didn't realize there were so many variants. Awesome job.
Great show guys.. I know last week i just seen 2 mark jewelers in my collection... Now i have to figure out what books i was reading.. Lol. Stay safe and comic on my fiends
Incredible day!! I just got back into collecting 2 months ago after a 20 yr hiatus. When you guys discussed the Mark Jeweler content, it dawned on me that a book I bought 20 yrs ago off Ebay reminded that the seller told me I bought a very special book. Back then I was thinking, yes it is special because it is a key issue and one that I always wanted. I still have the book in the package that it was sent and it was from a military base. That special book is a Hulk 181 (amazing condition) with the Mark Jewelers insert. Wow!! That made my day! Keep up the informative videos!!
@@grios5530 I was curious myself so I looked it up. On the CGC forum, Mark Jewelers inserts date back to 1972 in DC comics ( a photo of Detective comics 472 with an insert).
Hey guys! Thanks for the video! Which Morbius the living vampire are you referencing, I have a ton of them and they all have a UPC (is the barcode different between the two?)
Oh man! I was selling one of my comic books on eBay for auction a couple of months ago. I don’t even remember what book it was, but somebody Sent a message asking if there was a jewelry advertisement and I never knew why they were asking that. I thought it was kind of odd, but now I know! I will definitely be checking my collection! Thanks for all the great videos guys!
James Devito bruh I feel ya!! Lost my spawn collection due to a flood!! And get this was in the Navy and traded the first 30 walking dead for the first 30 SPAWN!! Fml. But for personal reasons... I would do it again (come on minus TWD#1). But feel your pain..
@@georgeleos1346 wow walking dead. Who knew. I actually passed up buying it at the comic store thinking it wasn't going to be anything and now I'm a huge fan. Go figure. Be safe state well and may the force be with you
You guys are absolutely awesome great video thank you for your bringing out the hunter in a old collector I cannot wait to get out of work tonight go through some boxes from the attic keep up the great work boys!
I've had several Mark Jewelers variants, sold an MJ variant copy of X-Factor #24 not too long ago. Side note- I Hate that Corona has become a "thing". I get it.....but I still hate it.

I believe that Venom Vol. 2 (Rick Remender/Agent Flash Run) Issue #2 is another great example of a 2nd print with significantly increased value. A low print run of the 2nd print of issue #2, and the fact that it is an Amazing Spider-Man #300 homage means it's worth significantly more than the 1st print run (Which is also a #300 homage but at a much higher print run).
Cool video Dudes...I just picked up Eternals #11 newsstand UK pence variant CGC 9.8...it’s the highest and only copy on the Census...1st appearance of Kingo Sunen...Awesome spec book...the cool thing about UK price variants is they usually come off the same press and are printed first before the US counterparts so they tend to have more vibrant colours...can’t wait to show the book on my channel...also recently picked up a Golden age/Atomic age Australian variant of a Strange adventures book highest graded 8.5 and the only one ☝️ showed book on my channel...be safe and take care😃
In 1993, I remember going to a comic shop in an Ottawa mall and seeing a stack of new Venom Lethal Protector on a table. I scanned through them to avoid spine tick errors and found some with covers that had white or black background. Wanting a perfect error free copy, I skipped those to the perfectly embossed beautiful copy. After seeing Key Collector. I am continuously kicking myself and I feel like burning my current Venom copy.
Picked up Spawn #1 about 16 years ago, just noticed it was the newsstand variant a few months ago. Its currently at CGC along with some commons I've had for about 20 years.
The Mark Jewelers variants is something I never realized, this is just wild to think about! Now I have to go through all my old books to see if these inserts exist! Starting with that Spider-Man issue!! Thanks Tom and Gem! Oh and the shirt does rock!!
Hopefully one of you sees 👀 this comment. I had a fun idea for you and Gen to do a video. How about Tom and Gem "Talk about Ink...not what you think" Show off you tattoos! Yours are so bright and comic theme, Gems look to be a little more about his home town but I noticed in this video and thought with all the difference in our daily that it would be a good quick video that isn't restricted by new comic arrivals etc. Love watching you and just signed up for the mail call. Looking forward to our first box 📦
Oh man, I need to check my collection now to see which Venom Lethal Protector version I have. I recently discovered my Spawn #1 was a newsstand variant. Had no idea.
Love this! Yeah I recently got a Scooby Doo #7 15cent comic and noticed their was a Mark Jewelers Ad in it ... is like the oldest one i've ever seen. What is the first Mark Jewelers ad in a comic I wonder?
My BOYS, shouted out to both your channels. Love what you guys are puttin down for the comic fam and community. Real quick love to MR. COMIC TOM (aka. THE NERD VOICE) and many others. And real HOOD boys respect the one the only GEMMINT (aka comic don) aka comic gangsta) (Aka real EVERLAST). With all do respect fellas love what you are puttin down. Remember when tom used to shout out people in the community for their finds and now he always finds a way to sneak in that app in every episode? I dont want to sound like a hater but we know what app is at this point. Either way love the channel.
i have been a collector since the 70's and all this variant stuff really pisses me off. Actually the whole monetising comics thing annoys me. What i'm trying to say is. If you do not love the storylines and have respect for the beauty and artistry of a comic. DON'T BUY IT. YOU DON'T DESERVE IT. Money money money... It's the only thing people think about.
Honestly I wish variants would go back to this sort of thing. Not, declaring them variants. But I know in this time of information even when there is a so called "secret" variant that gets put out, it gets talked about on line and You Tube which starts the frenzy. I'm too old to be fighting people on New Comic Wednesday whose purpose is to flip a book and not collect it.
There are also lingerie variants that are part of some jewlers ads but i have only seen two to date one being tomb of dracula#7 and the other i can't remember but im on the look out for those being i haven't seen them alot and no one talks about them so im not sure as to how many exists
The Mission Impossible Error copy comes in two varients, the Direct to Market version and the Newsstand and dosn't seem so rare in the Uk, I have 2 in my collection right now. I have a theory that a lot of recalled books can be more easily found in the UK as they were already on the boat when they were recalled.
Agree on this. The Karen Berger Editorial Sandman #8 for example arrived in my LCS at the time. Pretty sure a lot went out onto the shelves before it was noticed (In Aberdeen Scotland)
Mark jeweler's started in the early 1970s to see if they would do well. (they did) so in the later 1970s (75 -79) they printed them in move books( power man, were wolf by night) so the moral to the story is the ones in the early 70s are less printed the ones in the late 70s where over printed. But by the 1980s Vietnam war was over and so where the need for the ads. I own one of there rarest to date being ams#129 in the early 70s because of the key factor, condition and all together collectablity(?)
You mentioned Todd Mcfarlane laughing at $20 Spawn #1s........11 months later........$35 to $40. Do we have a bubble problem? Maybe not like the 90s fiasco but a bubble problem on a smaller scale.
I have what I think might be the first variant from Marvel ( Timely ). It is Oscar Comics # 3 1947, the variant was from issue # 26. I have both issues that even Overstreet got wrong in its description. I’d like to send you pictures of them to get your take on it, perhaps the Golden Age Guru could weigh in?
Ironic never knew there was a villain called Corona, in Marvel comics. The timing of this video couldn't be better. God, knows everything. Amen and amen. Having to learn about the Spider-Man issue #176 on this video, i'd be interested in looking for one, because of the villain and the story.
Is Mark Jewelers still in business? Even if they are not, I am certain there is some type of trademark infringement occurring through the marketing of these shirts.
I can't believe people are willing to pay hundreds more for an ugly UPC that partially covers the artwork, in addition to the lower quality paper of the newsstand copy, which already had washed out colors brand new, and the paper is more susceptible to deterioration over time. I feel like I'm living in the movie Idiocracy.

Some like quick bits and some like the long show. Hope that helps clear things up. Hope this helps clear things up.
Batman #457 is not Jason Todd’s 1st appearance. It’s Tim Drake’s who becomes Robin going forward during this time with his own new costume version.
Good ear, I missed his flub of the Robin's by Tom.
Ahhh Tim Drake 😆 good catch
That’s the 2nd print Newsstand, too. I don’t think you noted that in the video, just said newsstand (apologies if I missed it)

I just found 2 news stand Venom Lethal protectors in my collection thanks to this video!... you guys are so freaking awesome!
I have the newsstand lethal protector signed with total remark as Knull. Cgc 9.6 and I've been offered $900 for it
Sorry I'm new to this how do you know the difference between a new stand variant and not I found one of these venom comics randomly recently?
Thank you for explaining Mark Jeweler variants. Always wondered what that was.
But Cruise didn't complain about the shit Cover? Lol...
Great video! Gotta love how Tom just has a bunch of graded comics on display.
