- Next to Normal - Jennifer Damiano, Alice Ripley & Aaron Tveit perform "Superboy and The Invisible Girl" at the 2009 Tony Awards Nominations Concert on May 18th at the Hudson Theatre.
i think one the most interesting parts of this song is that when gabe comes in he forces natalie to sing harmony in her own song. he just comes in a takes over which is kind of what their relationship with their mother is like
***** Awesome thought! You must be an English major...LOVE IT
+Marley Lund You. You have put words to exactly what I was thinking! Isn't that awesome? She doesn't even see him, but she knows from experience when he's going to come in and shove her to the sidelines, and she reacts accordingly, switching almost to the background vocals. I think the thought that went into these songs is so underrated.
that's what I was thinking!!!!! but I had no idea how to word it!
I saw that on Genius!!! Ugh I LOVE THE SONG WRITERS AGGH
I think about this comment every time i listen to this song
I think it's really ironic and sad that she actually ends up singing the harmony in what started out as her solo while Aaron sings melody instead.
i guess thats the point
This show left WAYYYYY before it's time..
+kanos1213 I disagree. Shows don't have to last forever to be successful. This production successfully recouped its investment and ran for almost 2 years. "Next to Normal" is one on my favorite musicals, but it is not a show that pleases everyone; this is not "Mamma Mia." The shows that last for ages are supported by tourists who don't know theatre but know that they want to see "something on Broadway." This was not for them - too small and too depressing.
I disagree with sparklemotion I think it did leave way before it's time I watched the musical it was excellent and I think they should bring it back
In my opinion, Gabe isn't mocking Natalie, it's really just who Gabe is to Natalie. Gabe is not a ghost or a memory, he personifies what his character means to every other character in the show. Notice how he's sympathetic around Diana, yet agressive to Dan and Natalie because they're trying to bury him and his memories to the ground because they can't accept his death and the episodes that puts him on Diana's ideas. My interpretation tho.
Yep and that's why his personality changes when Dan finally acknowledges him
You can really see it in I'm Alive too. His description of what he is changes depending on who else is talking.
I would have to disagree...it's Diana who can't accept his death..hence her seeing him. Dan is trying to move on in a healthy way but Gabe is still there for him...Natalie is the one who's fully removed.
i love this interpretation! adds another level of genius to how good this show is
imagine your mother saying "I love you as much as I can" geez that has to hurt
I actually think it’s a pretty heartwarming line from Diana, because she at least believes that she’s trying, and it’s a genuine sentiment.
But I understand how someone that lacks the perspective of living with a debilitating mental illness would interpret it as negative.
Gunna share my own truth here. I have a mother like that. She doesn't know how to really give without taking. She never learned to love people. She spent most of her life abused and thrown in prison after prison for drugs. She's made it clear she loves me...with words alone. I don't trust words anymore because of this. I need action. Her action tells me she's upset that I came to be because I remind her of what she's done. She abandoned me. She abused me. She neglected me. And now...I make her feel guilty inadvertently, just by standing there. I asked her once if life would be better if I wasn't around. She said yes...
I thought about ending my life a few times and tried once. One day, it dawned on me. If she can't love me, then she just can't. So I'll love me. And when I started loving me...I found someone else who loved me too. I've been married to an awesome woman for five years and we live and love together.
Happened to me when I was ten. I'm still scarred.
Just hit me like...wait, what lol
Aaron is great, don't get me wrong, but in lieu of all the love he's getting for being hot from fangirls, I'd like to take the opportunity to fanboy out on Jennifer Damiano and talk about how beautiful she and her voice are.
She doesn't get enough credit for how difficult of an emotionally and vocally challenging character she has brought to life in Natalie.
And that belt before Alice comes in is soooo good.
Jennifer, I love you, lol.
jennifer damiano is flawless my man
ColeTraNe1212 I wish I could, but everyone would say I’m sexually harassing her for saying she’s hot. I know it sounds weird said out loud, but think about that f to two minutes
Yes!! And her voice is also unique and very interesting, it has a lot of character to it which really makes it difficult to imagine anyone else but her as Natalie
She got at least one nomination for best actress on this show, and she was like 17. Very deserved.
@@alessia-adams it's the point for her to get overshadowed of course, but it's sad that that happened irl too
i love aaron but can y'all shut up and appreciate our literal queen jennifer
No! Appreciate him I don't see why not
@@livelaughlove0209 Because this is primarily Jennifer's song but she's getting hardly any credit because people have crushes on Aaron?
1) Natalie is not an adult. She's an angry, hurt teenager, and the song is about her. 2) I would not call struggling to compete with the memory of my dead brother for my mentally ill mother's attention stupid or silly. Why do you consider it to be so?
I have never felt more seen by a song. My brother died before I was born so I'm the "rainbow baby" but I feel like the worst replacement possible. I have always felt like I'm living up to compensate for someone I don't even know. When I was little, my mother would look through a photo album of him instead of read me a storybook for bedtime. She looked so invested and losy in memories of him it felt like i wasnt even there, like I would never be enough for her to just love. My father never wanted to talk about it, no one did. My older brothers all got to hold him before he died and they all miss him. When I tried to interact with them it felt like i was invisible. I know the song is horribly sad and I know exactly why, but listening to it helps me feel a little less invisible.
Me too. This song is about the experience of the surviving child (children, in my sister’s case and mine) growing up in the shadow of the immortal hero child. It took me years to realise my mother indeed loved me as much as she could - but that doesn’t negate what it was like growing up invisible, with her always seeing him when she looked at me. That’s why this play, and especially this song, was so powerful to me. Like you, I felt “seen”.
I'm really sorry you feel this way. My heart really goes out to you. Please know, YOU'RE NO REPLACEMENT! YOU ARE INCREDIBLE BECAUSE YOU ARE YOU!
(I suffer from an inferiority complex so I think I can empathize with you a bit). I know how lonely I am a lot of the time, not feeling like I really belong anywhere aside from in my home w my bulldog and my art.
I may not be able to help w the social/familial aspect but I can tell you what makes it easier to spend time with yourself, if others make you feel less than...
Find and celebrate things that bring you joy! I challenge you to do a little bit of joy producing, soul celebrating 'something' everyday... It'll help strengthen your sense of self while releasing serotonin, which will help you to have a better, more positive association of yourself!
You + doing/creating something from the ❤ everyday= a happier version of who you are today.
It doesn't have to be a giant self-promise or undertaking... I challenged myself to "do something creative every day". That's it! Not intimidating at all! Not too specific and not the end of the world if I miss a day or two. I can tell you, it's easier to get out of bed everyday when I know I GET to create something.
You're in my prayers 💕
im so so sorry you have to endure that, you don't deserve it one bit. im so happy this song makes you feel seen❤
You can't even see Aaron's face in the beginning you can just see his silhouette yet he still manages to look extremely beautiful I don't understand??¿
IKR!!!!!
Angels have that effect
Many years ago I saw something saying how brilliantly this show is written. When Gabe joins in on this song he takes over the melody, forcingn natalie to sing harmony and compete for control of the song
I know! And how he is lurking around her and continuing to lurk even when singing, he's almost MOCKING Natalie in this scene!
0:28 skips the talky intro and gets straight into the music. Upvote if you found this useful. :)
For some reason I think that the reason of why Natalie can't see Gabe is because she has still not reached that level of crazinees and she just feels his presence. Because Gabe is not a ghost he's the personafication of an ilness that has taken the control of that family.
Idk, just my opinion
Who can’t be believe this was 10 YEARS AGO?! Anyone still here in 2020? 🙋♀️
I love how this show not only portrays mental illness extremely well, but also shows how it can effect the people you love. This show makes me want to cry no matter what song I’m listening to😢❤️
I love the different ways this musical can be interpreted. Like, Gabe could be a malicious entity trying to break the family apart, he could be a ghost that's been stuck in the same place for years and just wants someone to see him, or he can just not really exist and be the personification of their grief and mental health issues i.e. Diana wants him to be there and can't let him go so he's the perfect son for her, Dan is in denial of his grief and tries to make everything normal so Gabe is hostile and for Natalie, Gabe is the brother she never met but has to live up to his potential which can be worse because she can never do better than someone who never had a chance. All of his achievements were potential. So he manifests as the embodiment of her insecurities.
Is't it amazing.
All three of them are just incredible. But I must admit, Aaron is my favorite. He has the most haunting voice. Even though I'm married I have a full on crush!
cries because aaron tveit
Alice is phenomonal!
Jenifer is amazing!
And Aaron is THE BEST!!!!!!
Next to Normal won't be the same without him :(
I wish I could see it before he left!
All of them have amazing voices ugh so in love with all of them
They really didn’t have to go that hard but they did and we are so grateful
And on the n2n album on spotify the song appears as Aaron's...
Seriously amazing voices in this cast.
Nominated for ELEVEN Tony Awards? That alone lets me know the show is amazing. Plus the performance at the Tonys was great.
Jennifer and Aaron. What a duo!!!
YES.
Agreed.
Jennifer’s conTROL is kind of my favorite
Jennifer is soooo good! Love her! :)
Damnit Aaron why are you so perfect you're killing me
She has a spectacular voice though, like... crazily good.
2:05 onwards is just absolutely amazing.
Holy crap this was 9 years ago. I feel young lmao
I think it's just written at the top of her range- to a point, that's purposeful. I could be wrong, but I think they wanted that straining-at-the-top-of-her-range thing going on. :)
Love how Aaron jumps in in 2:08 :) how can someone be so perfect
Lau Ra couldn't you just gobble him up
I would love this as a movie .. even if it wasn't a musical. The story line is just so raw and real. (But if it was movie musical it would be even better!!!!)
She is the only character I feel for in this story, which mostly reminds me of what some of my friends' parents have put their kids through. I mean, it's sad that Mom has grief and mental health issues... but she also has enough moments of clarity to understand what she's inflicting on her family. And the father sure does. Adulting means you get your shit together for your kid, or you get gone. But I guess this part reflects real life: when you're white and middle-class, you don't have to worry that your super-shitty parenting will cause someone to take away your kid.
Jen is my sister, I'm married to Aaron, and Alice is my mother. xD If only.
Stop talking about Aaron okay this musical is fucking amazing and it's not all about Aaron what about Jennifer her vocals are amazing. I adore Aaron and I'm happy he's found so much success but he's in less than half of this song and the rest is pretty damn amazing too.
I LOVE AARON TVEIT SO MUCH I JUST
aaron is just a role model. hes amazing first of all and hot af. To every boy or man trying to be on broadway look to him as a figure to aspire to because he can be any character you throw at him, and especially in this he is just incredible . And to anyone who says he mocking her hes not.
Maybe not so much mocking as taunting her with how 'perfect' he is in their parents' eyes and basically expressing all of Natalie's insecurities, since he's basically a personification of her own feelings and how she sees him (in the same way as he is for all the other family members) and her constant fear of being forgotten and overshadowed by this perfect fantasy brother
I could see Aaron playing Melchior in Spring Awakening. Maybe after this he'll consider it.. :)
@soubrette87 Seriously? Woah! That is amazing if you count me watching this and listening and listening! :D
Jennifer is incredible, one of the most underrated Broadway performers ever
Just the show last week. Unprepared to be lifted out of my seat the way I was. Totally deserved the Pulitzer.
Its the greatest musical of this era, or any era, I've seen 'em all. It didn't win the Tony, but so what, neither did West Side Story, Gypsy, Follies, etc.
@ziops1423 yep he's taunting her. She can't see him, so he's making fun of that and making the most of the fact that she's pretty much the invisible one. It's a little confusing if you haven't seen the show, but it's really ironic.
He needs to play Melchior in Spring Awakening ASAP.
I LOVE THAT SONG!!!
Quality performance there, especially from Jennifer Damanio, really great poise and emotion there!
ok ive seen the show but i never really understood why Gabe sang along with her! Please someone explain!
2.00 you can see Karen Olivo's nominee for west side story #wepavannesa
Imagine how hard it would be with Aaron singing in your face like that. Jennifer does a really good job, I love this cast of Next to Normal
I suddenly got slammed in the face with the realisation that this song absolutely exemplifies how we see men in this society, just so much more important, and women are almost invisible and taken less seriously. Damn.
it's been four years and i still can't get over the fact that aaron wasn't nominated for a tony for his performance in N2N
Musicalsrockmysocks,
Most of the gay friends I have are way more attractive than the straight friends I have.
I don't know what it is! :-)
But, gay or not, you have to admit that he is quite good looking. Not to mention he has an amazing voice!
This slaps
Her voice, I'm just- Wow.
. N2N is just phenominal, although it didnt win best musical, it was nominated, which is an honour, N2N and BETM were the only two musicals that stood a chance of winning, cuz broadway loves two things, storylines with heart, which both had, and pushing boundaries, again both did. The Jukebox musical has been done already, as has the flipping a fairytale(s) on its ass, with Wicked and Into the Woods and countless jukebox musicals (WWRY, Jerser Boys etc). If this musical was made anyother year it
i dont think Brian signed on to do the Broadway version. and im sorry to all for saying Aaron was inconsiderate. i did think that Aaron was at first until I realized that they were actually doing the show on broadway instead of just previewing it there, and that he was there for a year and a half. I'm just not sure why he would sign on to do the broadway version if he was going to leave a month and a half later.
If they do movie version of this for Gabe Natalie and her boyfriend Henry maybe Ashley Greene as Natalie Jensen ackles for Henry and Gabe Ryan paevey or Steve Lund
Yup! That's her! Jennifer was in the OBC of Spring Awakening when she was 15!
I love her
Aaron Tveit is one of those people that is so overlooked, but in reality is pretty much amazing. Amazing voice... amazing looks (babe!). Amazing. And Jennifer and Alice... wow. For real. They're all so great. Jennifer should be as famous as Sutton Foster.
yeah, he is... I have seen both of them play fiyero haha... I saw Kyle's first EVER performance on as Fiyero, on tour in Columbus with Coleen Sexton and Christina DeCicco, he was great, and Aaron was awesome too... Both are really nice at the Stage Door as Well...
gone starting the sixth, and all I am saying is that other musicals preview for the same amount of time off broadway with the same cast as they would have in the broadway production and they are in the show on broadway for a whole nother year and a half. i think he is inconsiderate, just my opinion
if Aaron left - which was really inconsiderate considering the show hasn't even been on broadway for two months yet - to go to that other show and is coming back in September, who is doing this at the Tonys tomorrow if today is his last day at the show (June 6th)?
We need this show to come back
I'd love to see Aaron as Mark in RENT.
Damn he's amazing.
But Diana enters the scene from the stairs. That is why she is leaning and peering into the room.
it's not technically "revealed" early on. when i saw it some people ddnt see it coming and it was a huge twist for them. it's a little later on.
u met all three of them?!! that's awesome!!!
Look at Tveits dorky little tie
AMAZING!!!!!! I wanna see this SO BAD! Sadly I live to far away from New York City....
Do the Siegel and Shuster estate get royalties for the Superboy trademark?
tony
@gluedhand She feels invisible. Her mother is constantly the center of attention, as is her mother's delusion of her long-dead son, Gabe. Gabe is taunting Natalie as a brother would in real life when they get their way, more so than out of jealousy. Her dad only focuses on the mother and the mother on Gabe and her treatments. Look up a song that was cut from the show. It explains a lot. "Growing Up Unstable". Also, there is pretty good synopsis online. "Maybe" will give you some insight, too.
Aaron looks so hot!
I just came back from ny and I saw this with meghann fahy as Natalie. And I have to admit she's a lot clearer than jennifer. Brian Crum played Gabe and he did well and really fit the character, but now that I hear aaron's voice, I enjoy watching him perform too:) I wish I could've seen him play Gabe live.
This was such a good musical...
It's completely different to any of Llotd Webber's stuff, or any classical composers.
I know you;re entitled to your own opinion but you don't have to go about swearing because you think it's bad - because you're not in the majority.
And if you can sing better than they can then fine. But I'd be VERY surprised if you could.
@jayiijay reeeeeeally..? It wasn't as good as I expected. Don't get me wrong I loved it, but the score didn't stand on its own as much as I thought and the writing was less than fluid
Still, I am tremendously greatful I got to see the OBC and it really is great to see an "important" musical doing so well on Broadway!!!
He has been spotted with many women, he is a proven hetero. It's like whenever an amazing young male performer arrives he's automatically gay, I have nothing againts being gay, I love gay people, They are my closest friends, its just so odd how now there is a reverse prejudice in a way now... Tveit is straight!
I'm not saying he's gay or straight, but I don't think saying that someone is gay (especially in musical theatre) is really bashing them.
LOL at how many of the comments unwittingly reflect the message of the song's lyrics. Aaron is talented, but Jennifer Damiano is beautiful and amazingly talented as well - and the star of this video. Go fawn over him at some Tveit-centric video. XD
Why is he coming back in September? I am seeing him in Catch Me If You Can in July/August. I thought he was taking Catch Me If You Can to Broadway and not just the Seattle preview.
hm. yet you don't think Brian d'Arcy James is "inconsiderate" for leaving NTN before it came off broadway to do Shrek?
i think you are just angry you aren't seeing him perform...
@crs0831 I saw him as Roger at the Bowl. He ... was unbelievable!
Yes he is, once the out of town tryout of Catch Me If You Can. It's sometime in September (I can't remember the exact date, but I think it's somewhere around the 7th).
I disagree. not that next to normal wasn't great, but Billy Elliot had the child element that the audience loves. that being said, N2N would have swept w/o Billy
@ImFancyPants The 14 spammers might have had something to do with the dislikes. They'd have to have, only a bot with no emotions could dislike this.
it was so unfair, jennifer should have won, and Aaron should at least be nominated, but no, billy Elliot got all the lights......At least Alice won!
I almost wish I never watched Next to Normal because then I would never have discovered Aaron Tveit and I like him so much that it huuuuuuuurts.
Aaron should have gottena nomination for his proformance! He was breathtaking! (as always)!
I love how in this musical she treats her daughter like she's dead but she treats her dead son like he's alive! It's so depressing!

love this Show :) it´s finally here in Germany. I saw a preview- and next week finnaly again :) I cried all the time
ino everyone’s angry about everyone giving Aaron to much credit but FUCK ME he is STUNNING
@crs0831 He is playing Roger in Neil Patrick Harris' production of Rent. I still agree he would be a phenomenal Mark.
your right. I think he's going to be in N2N from sept. till dec. and then they are transfering Catch me if you can
This whole musical is so dark it's almost funny
he has a girlfriend, jaquia or whatever her name is. He's not gay at all.
This show was screwed out of the Tony sweep it deserved. Billy Elliot was good, but it was NOTHING next to n2n.
it's set to air all across the country, i THINK. you should check the tony's website, they'll have more info.
