We were just eating sunflower seeds and my son asked how they were made. Out of all the videos listed I picked yours. We loved it! My 5 year old boy said, “Wow, can we go meet this family?!” 😆
I love it ! Not only do you teach us HOW to plant and remove the seeds, you also teach us how to brine and roast them . Thanks for a very informative video .
WOW!!! This is such a great video. I had NO CLUE this is how you harvested sunflower seeds. Great instructions! Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you and your family!
I have successfully germinated 20 sunflowers this year! 2 large varieties, one Mammoth and one super snacker? They ate throwing, very tall and this 3 habe bloomed beautiful heads this week! I CAN'T WAIT to harvest and EAT them! A thanks for the roasting tips! Happy harvesting!
Great first point, all the personal protection equipment works when you wear it. One trip to the ER can consume any profit from your harvest. Boots, gloves, long sleeves, glasses, hats. and fantastic food.
We grow Sunflower for both ourselves and small livestock. The Rabbits, Chicken, and Quail all love the seeds. Easiest feed ever. No processing. Just toss 'em a full head and they'll go to town.
My husband and I have been talking about homesteading for a few years now. Y’all really make us feel like just going for it. It looks like pure happiness to me.
First off, your voice is tranquil. Second, thank you for sharing this video. I really enjoyed even though I have never given too much thought toward the process of harvesting sunflower seeds.
Thank You for that kind comment! Sunflowers are so great to grow, even if you are going to grow them for wildlife and not for your own consumption...besides that they are beautiful. We encourage everyone to have a few sunflowers in their life.
We grow Mammoth Sunflowers (grey stripe) in southwest Ohio. They look great along the fence line. Started with 2 packets last year and those 50 gave me enough seeds to feed the chickens thru the winter and plant again this year. This year's seeds are going to be next years photo field. We have a few that were all black heads, a couple that look all white but most are still the grey stripe.
fantastic! they really are stunning! we have some mammoths that we will try next year. we thought we might grow another batch of them but it may be getting to late in the season. Thanks for commenting and thanks for the input!
We grew Mammoth sunflowers seeds too. Living in PNW where summers weren't so hot. Bought the Ed Hume seeds for our area. Always so big and beautiful they'd grow. Heads at least a foot across, sometimes larger. Wonderful time and beautiful flowers and seeds! ♥️👍♥️
I came looking for exactly this, I use sunflower seeds to feed wild birds and I of course the squirrels and chipminks always manage to get some. They bury them and I get sunflowers everywhere! What you showed is what I did to harvest them but I found it messy. Great video!!
Have you thought about leaving the sunflower stalks standing and then plant a climbing fall crop? Peas, beans, cucumbers.. something that will use the stalks to lift their plants off the ground.
@@Nipunikazi1 oh we don’t care lol we’re allowed to look 👀 😆🥰🥰 I also have kids … and there’s is absolutely nothing wrong with telling someone they are handsome ✌️😉
Dude this gets a 10 beautiful family farm, Wow what a sight to see harmony like this.❤ Thank You. I'm a seed Freak I only have a few teeth left but I can mow down a whole field of sunflower seeds 🤣
4 Kids & a Farm, thanks for your video! Would you consider: digging up the soil where you planted your sunflowers and placing some of your chopped up stalks about 3-4 feet deep to decompose and provide some additional content for your soil? The flowers will also go into that area quite nicely either as mulch or as part of a 2 feet deep addition to the soil?
I've saved and used the leftover stalks, the thicker ones, as supports for my tomatosnd pepper plants early in. the season... right inside the tomato cage! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Currently, my sunflowers all border the entire back fence line.... one of them has a singulat stray cucumber vine that travelled to the sunflowe stalk and tendrilled itself to it! now that cucumber vine is tall than I am lol 🤷
Need to let them grow considerably longer. Tie paper bags on them to keep vermin off, then they'll be a much meatier seed. Backs of heads should be completely yellowed-cream colored. Then cut and dry just they way you did it. Beautiful family! Good job filming the harvest...
I’m a little late to the party on this one but the pith can be dried and ground into a gluten free flour substitute (I usually mix it with others like rice flour and dried zucchini)
We're city folks but my sister LOVED to plant stuff. One year she did sunflowers. I had no idea they grew that tall "naturally". I figured she had put miracle grow on them or something! Lol
One of the best My favorite flowers is a sunflower 🌻🌻🌻 specially the flowers energy looks and the hygienic forest air smells oooh I'm crazy with this flowers ❤️
For some reason we are really interested in the stalks as kindling. I mean it makes so much sense sustainability wise to use what you have on your own farm.
I always wondered how this works. I live in Florida and we don’t have sunflowers, except in pictures when they never have the seeds on them. So it’s so interesting so see them with seeds. I always knew that logically they had seeds somehow, especially because I have seen sell sunflower seeds sold in stores, but I never knew the mechanics of it. Like how the seeds come off the plant.
You should care about the plant stems (and leaves) because they can be pressed for sunflower oil. Maybe put a plastic or canvas tarp under the bowl to catch any seeds that might pop/fall into the grass?
wow, an American that uses cups & tablespoons in measurements! That's awesome, I could actually follow the recipe :) Meanwhile, I didn't know sunflowers needed pollinating. I've got a bunch of them nearly flowering now down under, but no bees, so very glad I watched this & learnt about that, guess the paint brush I've been using to hand pollinate cucumbers is going to get some more work on the sunflowers. Very glad I learnt that though, otherwise I would have had none! (I mean they still have to get through the cocky swarms, but I have them under chicken wire I've got across the top of my garden to keep the wild turkeys out, so fingers crossed that will keep the cockies out too, if not, I'll get many hours of entertainment as the cockies figure out how to get under it) Nice video :)
Awesome sunflower harvest! I just harvested mine. Have you guys ever tried using the dried stalks for building a teepee trellis or staking plants in the garden? I’m saving mine this year and going to try it! Have a great week!!
City Foodie Farm we have not but we have bamboo to use as a substitute. The boys have had sword fights with the stalks so we have ok doubt they will work as a trellis 😊 you have a great week as well! And thanks for taking the time to comment. We really appreciate it 😊
I've used them before in "bug hotels" (where you get a bunch of materials with holes that good bugs can use as a house, so as to encourage them to live in your garden). Bugs seemed to really like them, so there's another use for you if you have little pieces left over :)
They are amazing. I use my extra little sunflower heads for that during the winter. Just put them in a container full of soil. Wait to sprout. Don’t even need lights just some window light. And when they get true leaves. Cut and add to salads. Very tasty.
Hi Guys i found you via Jill when you Guys were 2022. .at HOA. Also, I've seen someone roast the whole head with some oil and spices. I think they used a younger one with softer seeds, but I bet you could probably eat the head after removing the seeds :)
I use long-handled garden loppers instead of a machete'. The kind with a three or four inch cutter. You can pick-up stalks with it, toss them around, chop them up, and keep it all at arms distance plus two feet away.
I use loppers like that too, but I'm watching this & thinking the machete looks much easier, single handed operation to cut, leaving your other hand free to manage the plant & machete is lighter than those loppers too, especially when the loppers are extended, so centre of gravity is a long way away from your body & without a free hand to pull the heads down, that's what I'm thinking I'd need on tall sunflowers
Get a clean trash can and cover the opening with 1/2 inch (or larger) hardware cloth. Rub the flower seeds over the cloth and the seeds and flowers fall into the can. You can then winnow them like grain in front of a fan. It's a lot faster and easier on your hands. give the smaller ones to the chickens whole and let them pick out the seeds.
I heard you say you couldn't use the seeds to plant for next season. Are their only certain varieties you can replant the seeds? I'm getting ready to cut one down our son planted from school and was hoping to save seeds for next year.
