That was the best information I have seen. Others tell you how, but from their description , I would have waited to long to harvest. Thought the whol back needed to be brown. Thank you
I agree. Articles on the subject do not give detailed pictures, and sometimes the 'signs' are conflicting. Videos are often worse! many show the flower being harvested even when there are live petals still on the flower's edge, and comments all say that that was way too early. I feel much more confident to judge when to harvest (which probably should have been last week for some of them)
Country Living Experience: a homesteading Journey. I thank what. Do you do with sunflower heads? To keep sunflower seeds for you and your family to enjoy, cover the heads with paper or cheesecloth bags as soon as the petals fall.. The seeds are ready to eat when the back of the sunflower are dark brown, which is usually about 30 to 45 days later. Remove the bags. And cut the Stems about 4 inches below the sunflower and how do you remove sunflower seeds from your head? Harvesting sunflower seeds 1) Let the sunflower dry on or off the stem until the back of the head turns. Brown, the foliage turns yellow, the petals die down, and the seeds look plump and somewhat loose.. 2) with sharp scissors or pruners, cut the head off the plant (about 6 inches below the sunflower head.) Do you plant sunflower seeds point up or down? The seeds of sunflower can be planted. When planting, it is better to put the tip part down and the large part up, because the tip part will grow roots so as to tie the soil tightly..🌻🌻🦋🦋🌻🌻🦋🦋🌻🌻🦋🦋🙊🙉🙈😆😆
When I sent my husband a link to your video I did not exaggerate when I said how well put together, how concisely you gave all the needed info, and the great luck of selecting your video before all other sunflower ones. Normally I need to watch a dozen videos (some ranging on half an hour) in order to gain all the quality information I need. You made the whole process loads easier. Many thanks, and I am now subscribed!
My wife planted several sunflower seeds while I was planting my regular garden, as a joke. Well, the five sunflowers grew like mad, and soon we had beautiful seven-foot plants. Had only heard that we would need to plant again next spring, but had no idea how/when to harvest. This was an excellent video. So clear and informative. Thank you !
I've been growing sunflowers most of my life. I think they're beautiful. I harvest ones for eating but the ones I plan on using for next year I leave in the head of the sunflower and hang in my shed for next year
Do you keep the stems in the ground after the flowers dry up and do they grow back next season or do you have to keep re-planting the seeds from the harvest?
geneva1999 I was wondering this same thing. I don’t think any new flowers would grow back, but I am curious that maybe somehow they do? I wonder if new flower stems will grow out
Thanks! My first time to grow sunflowers and I have a few big ones! Can’t wait to harvest the seeds. Blessings on you for including your precious daughter.
I drove around Switzerland and was amazed by the sunflower fields - haven't seen as many in my life - and I'm reading more about sunflowers! Your daughter is so adorable!
Great thank you! I’ve grown sunflowers for the first time ever and the flowers are huge and beautiful and I’m so excited to harvest them when they are ready. Your daughter is adorable, what a good helper! I’m sure my 8 year old is going to enjoy the harvest process as well, after all she’s been helping me water them ☺️
knowledge is powerful. I always thought it was just for looks. I never thought you could eat it. I lean something new every day. thank you for sharing.
Oh my goodness!! What a blessing! This video is so interesting. The Little daughter is really precious! It is so good to see a parent raise a child to appreciate gardening and mother nature. See ya next time! :
Good info. I was about to start cutting off my sunflower heads, but stopped because, based on your video, they are not ready. BTW your daughter is a real cutie! Nice family!
I was surprised to see how big sunflowers can get. I recently found one growing in my backyard, probably from a seed that came from the wind or a bird. It's about 4 feet tall, and I noticed it a few days ago. The flower bud is just starting to form. Over all, I am excited to watch it grow, bloom, and harvest when it is ready! 😊
Your daughter is adorable, thank you for this informative but not complicated video!!! I grew my first sunflower this year from a sprout I just found in our garden. I'm hoping I can grow more next year with the seeds from this one! Wish me luck
Thank you!! She is the cutest!!! I grew for the first time and I'm excited! They're just now blooming so I have a while still. But thank you so much for this information!
Thank you so much for being simple and to the point. So grateful I found your video!!!! Especially the tip about the seeds. I really wanted a visual of when it was time to harvest by looking at the seeds themselves and your tip was perfect!!!! ❤❤
Oh my gosh! I came for learning when to cut my first sunflower heads off for harvest and stayed for your adorable daughter that reminds me of my kiddo! You have a beautiful set up and this was a very well done video for newbies like me. I subscribed! Thank You!
I’m watching in preparation for a visit to Dewberry Farm in North Carolina for u-pick sunflowers. Thanks for this thorough video. While everyone picks upright blooms, I’ll be picking good eats. Yay, thanks!
Thanks for your video, I decided to try growing giant sunflowers this year and I didn't know much about them. I have limited space, but I have spectacular sunflowers that are presently over twelve feet tall. Your daughter is absolutely adorable and makes your video very entertaining.
This video was great and helpful! I only have little plants right now, but they grow every day. This is my first year with sunflowers, and the only reason I started was for a memorial for a little girl that died. One of the people in my Facebook group shipped out a ton of seeds after she passed away and I snagged ten plants out of it. I can't wait to harvest them, sunflower seeds are my go to snack
I planted some Mammoth sunflowers and they grew to about eight feet tall. And that was quite exciting. I didn't quite know what the next step was so thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Your daughter is beautiful and precious and one can tell sueños carefree and secure with her daddy. She is like a little lion club bouncing around in the safe orbit of her daddy. Thanks for sharing
Good information! Straight to the point! my flowers are very close to harvesting. You should think of making gardening videos for kids hosted by your daughter! She’s great!
Thank you for the helpful video. I am leading a student environmental club and our first activity this year is to harvest the sunflowers we planted last year. By the way, your daughter is adorable (I have one of my own about the same age), and your inclusion of that song from The Decemberists is awesome.

I've been growing sunflowers most of my life. I think they're beautiful. I harvest ones for eating but the ones I plan on using for next year I leave in the head of the sunflower and hang in my shed for next year
Great
I planted with the intention of letting the birds eat them this winter. Great video, never raised sun flowers before and wasn't sure when to cut.
Do you keep the stems in the ground after the flowers dry up and do they grow back next season or do you have to keep re-planting the seeds from the harvest?
geneva1999 I was wondering this same thing. I don’t think any new flowers would grow back, but I am curious that maybe somehow they do? I wonder if new flower stems will grow out
So if I want to use them to plant next year… I just let them hangout through the winter?
Oh my gosh, she’s the cutest. Thank you for the tips!!!
Thank you
