I planted sunflowers for the first time this year 2020 and how amazing are these sunflowers! The seed were sent to me as a promotion to help the bees to thrive. Absolutely, love that idea to store the seeds in a mason jar as I was wondering the best way to store them and remember the next year to plant them. Many thanks for your video and ideas!
Hi Lisa , yay you ! So happy to hear you have sunflowers and bees 🐝. Super combination . The best way to store the sunflower seeds is to make sure they are super dry before putting them in the mason jars . Then find a cool dark place to leave the jars in and you are all set until it’s time to plant the sunflower seeds in spring . Happy planting 👍🌻🤗
This is awesome! My husband and I planted sunflowers for the first time this year and weren't sure how to harvest for next year. This was super informative. Thank you so much!
Hi Kelly, I planted sunflowers for the first time in 2021 here in South Australia, Australia. What I love about these flowers is that they just make me happy and bring me joy. So much so that I have made it a mission to plant them every year from now on. I watched your video on how to harvest the seeds and plan to do them and share with friends. I'm also going to check out your other videos just because you have such a nice vibe about you. Have a nice day :)

Hi. Just come across your video today. I'm from New Zealand so my seasons are opposite. I tried planting Sun Flower from seeds that were given to me, for first time. I planted from in my greenhouse early spring and transplanted to a spot in my garden at start of summer. They worked out very well and want to try growing from my current crop. Our summer season is about to come to an end. I found your video very helpful. Thank you.
Planted my first Black Russian sunflower and it is now in full bloom! That got me hooked to growing more, the only limit is space!! The bright yellow really cheers up the garden:) And yes she's hungry for sunlight and will bend her whole stem out searching for the sun!
You can also start your sunflower seeds, before the last frost, by putting them in a folded paper towel, sprayed with water & put them in a container like a shallow plastic container with a lid. That keeps the moisture in & in about a week or so they will have sprouted a root tendril, then you can plant them.
We have a sunflower that is absolutely massive. It's easily over 10 feet tall and the stalk feels like a tree trunk. Hopefully the seeds we collected will work out!!

Hi Kelly!!! Awesome video!!! I will be growing some next year I love big flowers and these are certainly big and beautiful. It will be really cool to see them grow from seed. Thanks for all the great tips they look pretty dried. Have a great day!!!💚💚💚💚💚💚
Wow! Your sunflowers have been left to die out, quite a bit more than other TH-camrs who are showing us the harvesting....! Does it make a big difference?
I have 2 questions. Can I cut my dying sunflower heads earlier and let the head dry out somewhere out of sight before harvesting the seeds so it's not an eye sore? Second question is how long does it take for seeds to dry out before I can replant? I live in California, so we don't get frost seasons very often.
Viewing from England. I think I planted my seeds to late this year. What is the latest you can plant them. I have seen big heads of sunflowers on sale in fruit and veg shop. The back of at least some of them seems a bit damp and they are partly green. What should I do to store these seeds?
You save your flower seeds. How is that possible when (my understanding that most sunflowers are hybrids). How do you get the same flower from open pollination? Love this video.
Hi Avis , awesome sunflower question! 👏👏 I grow a lot of different varieties of sunflowers . I also have a honeybee hive so lots of cross pollination takes place in the field . My yellow sunflower produced white seeds that fell out readily into my hand. However, they haven't germinated. I read that white sunflower seeds are immature...but since they fell out of the head (brown and dry head) easily, I assumed they were "ripe."
Thanks Kelly, I planted sunflowers for the first time this summer in Victoria, Australia. The seeds that germinated best were the ones planted point down. Is there a best direction to plant the seeds? Looking forward to harvesting the seeds and planting hundreds of Sunflowers next spring.
Just for fun I planted about 40k seeds over like an acre. Months later I have a ton of seeds but did not dry out the heads first. I just snipped all of the heads and laid them to dry in the sun, making the birds job easy. So I started covering them when I left the farm at night and the Goldfinches went hungry haha. Anyway now I have buckets of seeds that are not all totally dry. I am stirring them up periodically and moving them to containers allowing more surface area exposed for drying. I am thinking about baking them, do you or anyone else have any experience drying already extracted seeds?
Hi David , oh wow, 40 k seeds is a lot . Loved your comment ! How cool 😎. Do you know if the seeds were mature on the plant when you harvested the heads ? If they were still kind of soft and green/white and (instead of being plump large and brown) they may not have matured enough to give you seeds that would grow new plants . They also may not have enough “meat” inside to make for a baked sunflower treat worth snacking on if they were not fully mature. I am wondering if they had enough water ( or too much water) and if you planted them in full sun ( which they love) . I have a family of goldfinches snacking in my sunflower field and I find it to be so magical to watch . If these seeds won’t grow , at least you can enjoy the heavenly scene of these beautiful birds . Good luck 👍 🌻🌻🌻🌻
@@KellyLehman Oh I bet they will grow! There are tons of them hahah. It was an experiment and now we get to watch all of the birds. Next season we'll buy better seeds we just put sunflower seeds from bags of bird feed, lots of multi-headed flowers but some produced single big heads which I will save of those seeds. Many weren't full mature (white seeds in middle) but all in all we got a lot of seeds from it. Next season there will also be less weeds as we pull them out and allow the sunflowers to take over.
You are very welcome . You can try surrounding the perimeter of your garden bed with coffee grounds, cayenne pepper or irish spring soap shavings . Dried coyote urine sprinkeled around the garden helps too . I have these items and more listed in my amazon shop page . here is a link ➡️ amazon.com/shop/kellylehman
Great video! Thank you. I removed my seeds and they have been drying out on a paper towel in my garage for about a week. Can the seeds become too dried out to germinate again?
Hi Karen , i dont think so . As long as you keep them away from sunlight and a heat source they should be good . In a few weeks, you can put them in a paper bar or mason jars and store them in a cool dark place like a basement until spring comes .Happy gardening ! 🌸😊Kelly
Thank u so much for sharing bc I watched 5 videos before finding this one and you went on ver exactly what I needed and wanted to do in my yard. Do u have a ig channel? Would love to share your post there!
Hey Kelly, I had a really cool looking sunflower pop up this year, and I want to save some seeds for planting. My question though, is whether I can plant the seeds directly from the sunflower head- into the dirt; as they are coming off easily right now. Do I absolutely have to store them for a couple months, and completely dry them for them to grow? Or could I just throw them in the dirt immediately? I threw a couple in the dirt about a week ago and nothing has popped up yet. Thanks!
I Iove zinnias too . I made a video showing how to harvest their seeds too ➡️ th-cam.com/video/1ds6x-O9M_Y/w-d-xo.html I don’t add supports to my sunflowers . The stems are pretty strong 💪
Do the Cardinals and other birds not basically harvest the seeds before you can get to them? What can you tell us about birds and sunflowers? Also, do the sunflowers naturally drop seeds and make it difficult to control their future population? Thanks!
Awesome sunflower questions ! 👏 The sunflowers will drop their seeds eventually onto the ground beneath it. Last year I had an entire field replant itself . The birds often get to the seeds in most gardens before they have a chance to replant themselves in the dirt though. I have a family of good finches that I love to watch in my sunflower fields . I plant lots of extra flowers for them . If you harvest your mature sunflower heads just after the heads droop , the outside ray flower drop off , and the seeds look plump and ripe and then hang them upside down by the stalks in a cool dry place . You can beat the birds from getting to them first . 🌻🌻🌎😊😊😊

Thank you for a very informative video. Can you please tell me how to stop the squirrels from digging up my sunflower seeds?
😊
🌸😊Kelly
Do you think if I put one of those little silica packs that come in a shoebox in, it would help keep moisture at bay?
I've never tried using them to keep moisture out . Interesting thought . 🌸😊
Thank u so much for sharing bc I watched 5 videos before finding this one and you went on ver exactly what I needed and wanted to do in my yard. Do u have a ig channel? Would love to share your post there!
So happy you liked it . My Instagram channel is @cranburyfields . Hope to see you there 🌸
Hey Kelly, I had a really cool looking sunflower pop up this year, and I want to save some seeds for planting. Thanks!
Im looking for the same answer.
What about Zinias? I love them with the sunflowers! Do I need a support stake for the sunflowers?
I Iove zinnias too . I made a video showing how to harvest their seeds too

I don’t add supports to my sunflowers .
thanks for the video, really loved my sunflowers this year and hope to have a bigger patch next year :-)
Hey Irene, So happy to hear you are a fellow sunflower lover !!! Here's wishing you a spectacular sunflower crop for next year!🌻
