    FYI copper tape is cheaper if you DON'T buy it from a guitar/music store. Stewmac is the worst. They want $34 for a single roll of tape that costs $10 everywhere else!

I have said this a few times and I'll say it again, I've been watching CSGuitars since 2013 if I'm not mistaken, I've been a guiatrist for almost 40 years and I'm still not that good but if you really want to learn in depth about the science behind all the lovely amps and guitars we all love so much this channel is a mandatory watch. Two things....
    1) Unlike the SG Special, whose short scale and set neck require the two P90s to be spaced *way* too close to each other, the longer scale and bolt-on neck (which requires no room for a neck tenon) of this S-style guitar allow for the two pickups to actually *sound* different from each other.
    2) It may be too late for this, but I'm a big fan of the Bill Lawrence half-out-of-phase wiring, first used commercially in the Jerry Donahue Telecaster. Normally, when two pickups are put out of phase, the cancellation results in a thin nasal tone and big volume drop. The "half" mod involves running the phase-reversed neck pickup through a cap to trim the bass (I use 10nf, but one can try other values). Because the two pickups (neck and bridge) have minimal overlap in that region, there is no volume drop resulting from cancellation. On the JD Tele, it resulted in a tone very similar to neck+middle on a Strat. I tried it out on a dual-SC "beater", and the resemblance to a Strat "cluck" was jaw-dropping. Inspired, I also tried it out on a dual-humbucker guitar. There was no way it was going to sound like a Strat, but it DID provide a very different-sounding and quite usable neck+bridge sound; again with no volume drop and none of the nasal reedy quality. Using a push-pull Tone pot to do the phase-flip with these two pickups might provide you with a 4th very distinctive tone. Give it a whirl. You might like it!

    • @WyattBrown377
      @WyattBrown377 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Going to try this thanks!

    • @markhammer643
      @markhammer643 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WyattBrown377 And please let us know how it works out. If it still sounds thin and reedy, try reducing the value of the cap to filter out a little more bass from the neck pickup (e.g., .0068uf instead of .01uf).
      I'll also note that if using the neck pickup on its own, its phase makes no difference in the sound. BUT, if one uses it on its own in the phase-flipped setting with the bass cut, you have yet a 5th tone available! Bonus!

    I love Wilkinson Trems! I did a mod project on one of my guitars and wound up installing a Wilkinson 2 point trem and swapping the saddles for some Hipshot Modern Contour saddles for palm muting comfort and (barring my Floyd Rose) it’s the best trem I’ve ever played, I’m installing the same combo on my new partscaster

  • @JC-11111
    @JC-11111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I actually just fixed my first guitar from when I swapped the pots. One was grounding out, touching one of the wires to the shielding because it was routed for smaller pots and I used CTS full sized pots.
    So I finally pulled it apart since it's not my main guitar and I wasn't too worried about it. All it took was a couple of strips of electrical tape under it and on the wall next to the pot and I'm back in business. No more cutting out. I can actually play it again so it may get more playing time now.
    Just an inexpensive Silvertone SS10 HSS "Strat"(BLK/maple) with super low output singles at 4.2k & 4.3k and a Guitar Madness 59'er A5 bridge humbucker. Those low output singles are actually really nice. A big difference from my other Silvertone SS11(blue/rosewood) with 6.3k & higher singles.

    Never underestimate what can make a great -sounding guitar. I have a book about master luthier Danny Ferrington (the guys who introduced acoustics that used body shapes of well-known solid-bodies). In the book, he recounts how he wanted to test out a particular pickup, so he cut out a body of plywood, and affixed a bridge and neck to it, assuming that it would be disassembled after the tryout. Slide legend Ry Cooder happens to walk in the shop, is intrigued by what Danny has cobbled together, tries it out, and asks to borrow it for a recording session later that day. I guess guitars are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get.

    That's pretty cool. I really like the P-90's on a Strat. Cool look, interesting take. Only things I would change are bringing down the volume pot away from the bridge pick-up so it's not in the way when palm muting, and I really like contoured neck heels. I don't know why that's not just common practice by now.

    • @zoomosis
      @zoomosis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Yamaha Pacifica 112 series was a low-cost beginner's guitar but something they got right was to move the volume pot away from the bridge humbucker. Strangely Fender still don't do this for their Squier Affinity guitars, not even the HSS models. Though it wouldn't be too difficult to make a replacement pickguard, and optionally delete one of the tone pots.

    the best part of partscasters is creative electronics. My Fenderbird is a triple humbucker active bass.

    You can buy conversion bushings for 10mm headstock tuner holes that go to the smaller 8mm holes.

    Really good build, almost therapeutic to watch LOL! I always bend my tremolo bars to my preferred height, just take it our of the guitar and put in vise or use boxed end wrench for leverage and bend a little at a time till it's where you want. Not much to a strat bridge... the Wilkinson is definitely a sure cure but a decent set of saddles would work too, maybe use for another build!

    It reminds me of two different guitars I put together. The Daphne blue body with the black plastics and chrome bridge, and I swear I made a headstock look just like that (but without the really nice logo on it).
