I upgraded the tuners and bridge on an old Squire strat that used to be a friend's. Turned that piece of crap that wouldn't tune, let alone stay in tune, into a rock solid guitar I play all of the time, I never touched it before except to move it out of my way! the 19.1 ratio Kluson tuners really helped and the original tin bridge wouldn't even intonate because the plate was so soft, the screws drilled into it rather than adjust. $25 Genuine Fender bridge changed that!

I’m glad you made a series of this. I frequently buy cheapo “junk”used guitars just to see how much I can turn it into a playable instrument. (Here in Japan you can get many branded junk guitars for literally tens of dollars) most of the time it’s just a dirty pot or a cold solder joint, worst case a fret level. Anyway point is, I love doing and watching these kinds of things. Please keep the series going. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Last year (2020) I restored my first black Peavey Predator Strat-style from 1994. I removed all the old "cool" stickers that I applied as a teenager, which left all the large paint chips to show, relic-style. I then applied the copper foil. Installed Graph Tech saddles and trees. Then, one of those loaded black pickguards with switchable polarity switches that gets "68 tones". Stringjoy strings to finish.

That's a real beauty now! I wouldn't change a thing. It looks and sounds great!
I recently reincarnated a dirty, rusty Samick Avion Les Paul lookalike that I got in a pawn shop for $80 USD. I replaced the rusted bridge and stoptail because the bridge radius didn't match the fingerboard. I used gold plated Gotoh hardware because the guitar had a pretty quilted veneer top, and I replaced the sketchy Duncan Designed humbuckers with gold plated GFS Fat Pats. These clocked in at about 14K bridge and 10K for the neck. I replaced the factory tuners with a set of 40 year old Ibanez Velvetune machines, gold plated with nice pearloid knobs. (I'm sure you're too young to remember Velvetunes, but they were top of the line back in the late 1970s to early 80s.). The switch, knobs and pots were all fine, but I'd like to replace the switch with a gold Switchcraft model, and replace the cream poker chip with a black one. I replaced the cream pickup rings with black ones, ditched the cream pickguard to show off that golden quilted top, and now I have one killer guitar. It is full Les Paul thickness but it only weighs a little over seven pounds. Altogether I spent about $140 USD and ten hours working on this, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars!

Great video! I just picked up a 2010 Squire Bullet Strat for Australian $75 (35 pounds). Very much the same deal with rusty parts, but the neck is really good as is the fretboard and frets, and it still actually works, so I'm going to give it a bit of your treatment and see how it goes.

My very first guitar was a 1996 Squier. It was the first year Squier was made in China. My dad walked into the local music store and said, "Give me the cheapest electric guitar you have." They tried to sell him a practice amp with it and he said, "no. My son will get by without it." So my first 7 months of learning guitar was on an electric guitar with no amp. I eventually had to find an amp next to a dumpster. Growing up poor was rad.
I still have that 96 Fender, just recently having to change the pick guard. It still plays wonderfully and while I might not play it as often as my Epiphone Custom pro.... I still pick it up pretty often. It's a great guitar.

Love this series. And these Squier Affinity Strats are really great - my first guitar was one too and I have recently upgraded it heavily with new electronics and a completely scalopped neck. Plays like a 600 € guitar now.

I would love for this series to become one of your main series. Kinda like the long forgotten Will it shred guitar.
This makes me want to fix up my Behringer fender clone guitar, but everytime I go up to it and check it I usually put it down and go back to play my real fender.

I took an old Squier I bought fir about £70. Tuners, bridge saddles and complete electrical make over with rails humbuckers. It was a good result. My son currently possesses it

Lovely sound, we are living in a golden age where all the budget guitars sound just good as high price tag ones. There may be a minor difference but can't make out in a band situation.

Great stuff Colin! Yes Davey it up! You could just use an HSH guard of course but would be good to see you use the Single ply white u have, cut the hum holes yourself, cover the edges with chrome hum rings like Dave did and use cream hums of course 🤘

yes! let's see the iron maiden conversion. I grew up in the 80's and really dig Iron Maiden & fast Eddie from Motorhead. both strat players among so many others. Jake e lee & mick mars both I saw together on Ozzy's bark at the moon tour. great work I really enjoy your vids

I have that exact model and year, and nearly just as dirty
    The pickguard was in pieces.
I put a black pickguard on it and polished off all the rust on the chrome
