"The Grand Budapest Hotel" is another beautiful movie
Wes Anderson has a beautiful style in all of his films
But in my opinion "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is the most beautiful movie of Wes Anderson
YesROMMEL IVAN
I loved Moonrise Kingdom so much, it's probabily my favourite from Wes Anderson
+Leonardo Tardino thats also my favorite of his
Grand Budapest Hotel should be here. Its use of colour is gorgeous
JellyLovesFaith isnt grand budapest a 2015 film?
+Lemuel Cang no
i totally agree...
This video was made before the film was released.
A redux video is required.
Not to mention the Courtesian au Chocolates.
If you liked this, you'll definitely like these other videos,

Top 10 Movie Opening Scenes
Top 10 Modern Film Directors
Top 10 Continuous Uninterrupted Shots In Movies
Glad 2001: A Space Odyssey was #1. That movie is still visually stunning to this day
"the Sahara desert" ? i thought Lawrence of Arabia took place, you know...in Arabia
I think top ten most overused songs in adverts/commercials would be quite good
Why was this and the CGI one in 480p? Of all videos...
Banshee Barriers
But it was shot in Africa.
The Searchers? The Godfather? City Lights? Gone With the Wind? Amadeus? My Fair Lady? Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid? High Noon? Dances With Wolves?
+Alan DeMoss missed the term "visually striking" ??
Manhattan?
Hold your horses, this is a top ten list, not top 100
The Fall. Such an underrated film.
+Rosie J I know. Frankly I'm pretty angry that it isn't higher on the list. 7? Pfft.
Indeed,
What about Sharknado? It doesn't have much CGI...
That film should have won "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards.
Pretty sure that was all practical.
Yeah, theres just one problem, this is the list of the most beautiful movies so it would have been bad to put Sharknado on after all the controversy it gained from firing real sharks in to the air.
***** Actually, it was a real-life documentary.
Guys, those sharks were CLEARLY actors, they just had a good Make-Up Team
Why wasn't Jurassic park on this list? They went to alot of trouble cloning real dinosaurs
But I think there was too much cgi in that movie for this list
Omg
kolton02 whoosh
Ikr!!
becuase they also used quite a bit of cgi also
You guys forgot "Metropolis" from Fritz Lange, that movie is a masterpiece!
Serious overlooks:
Days of Heaven, Dr. Caligari, Metropolis, Dr. Zhivago, Amelie, The Master, Holy Mountain, 8 1/2, Eraserhead, and many more
Wes Anderson, Tarkkovski, Roger Deakins, many more
+bigcabba Deakins one of my favorites
+bigcabba Now this list should add Revenant too
bigcabba Days of Heaven makes me cry for so many different reasons
Does anyone else agreed that 2001:A Space Odyssey is the best space movie ever made.
Good I hope everybody else agreed's.
Moses Hernandez Depends if you include fantasy like Star Wars, or you mean just sci fi in general
I mean like Space Movie's Astronauts.
It's the greatest film ever made.
Nah lotR is better
What about George Méliès A trip to the moon ? or Metropolis ? Nosferatu ? Any Charlie Chaplin ? Wes Anderson ?
If you haven't already, check out Warner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre, better than the original Nosferatu and is my favorite vampire movie of all time.
zellion2000 Honestly, I prefer the original Nosferatu- the filming and editing was way ahead of it's time, and the acting of Nosferatu was superb! Definitely one of my favourite films.
zellion2000 Werner Herzog's Nosferatu is up there as my favourite vampire film too
crazymango wes anderson is also my favorite director of all time especially his film the grand budapest hotel
rakki realm I was soooo good ! I laughed so many times ! But I also adored Moonrise Sunshine, the magic he manages to pour into his films is just... breath taking !
I think many younger people are not giving credit to 2001, 2001 was one of the greatest movies ever and deserved to be on watchmojos top ten lost its much better then other movies they had on there
Not necessarily all young people, I'm only in high school and 2001 is in my top 5 favorite movies, and definitely the most beautiful one I've ever seen.
metal321ful lets talk middle school in in middle school and no one knows what it is I go around my instagram off all 498 followers about 10 out of 300 kids know what 2001 is
Ajay chakraborty that is sad. i don't know many people that like quality fims. Most of my old high school friends only watched stupid comedies(sandler) and shitty effects movies(transformers, 2012, etc.)
jhop4life it is sad when people have not seen the godfather or apocalypse now
jhop4life except my best friend he is im love with 80s movies and music
Samsara (2011), by Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson.
It is an incredible movie, with no spoken words, filmed in all kinds of countrys, and it took them four years to make it. Unbelievable images and sometimes shocking. But it is one of the first movies that made me think that film isn't just entertainment, but also shows beauty, is a form of art.
+Eva steentjes I couldn't agree more, I thought for sure it'd be on here!! The beauty of that film was like nothing I have ever experienced before...
+Eva steentjes Samsara is very bad in comparing with first two of Fricke,Chronos and Baraka... Also Ashes and Snow from Gregory Colbert, and famous Quatsi trilogy... That type of film...
maybe i should watch those soon then, thanks for the tips. :)
ur welcome :D
+Eva steentjes I would recommend you to watch Ruined Heart, Fallen Angels, Only God Forgives and A Woman Is A Woman. these are most stylish movies i've watched. Also a very beautiful movie is Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring.
Barry Lyndon should definitely be at or near the top of the list.
imageaware In a category "non CGI with natural and realistic locations", indeed. "2001" is a bit overrated, even for "piece-of-paper's note" generation. ^^
@@dionysos46 2001 isn’t overrated but I respect your opinion
I wonder if watchmojo realizes those were cgi flowers in american beauty?
+New Frontier Films yea at 3:36
+Paesito “Martin Paez” Paez and the entire point of the list is non cgi movies non meaning none whatsoever. So it's kinda not fair to have it on the list.
+New Frontier Films She said little to none cgi in these films so a little is okay.
I agree that it said little to no, but when your most iconic shot is cgi, that kind of skirts the line.
D'accord.
What about Amélie?
OoXSIJU
L??. VS AAWWS!! JCB O PO
So true. Spectacular visuals and movie
Horror
RZ K yes!!!!
There Will Be Blood doesn't even get a mention? The oil well fire scene is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen!
The wizard of Oz is a masterpiece considering when it was made the special effects are mind blowing for a film that is nearly 80 years old. should have got higher up in the list I think.
no ...it was creepy and made me puke
You obviously don't have good taste in cinema then ..
Rachel Solomons yeah i do ...do you?
Yes I do.I do not puke at classics
Rachel Solomons just because they are classics alone; it still doesn't make them good.
"Washed away, like tears, in the rain"
chills man
chills
all of the most beautiful films were non-cgi.
RottingintheMidwest except Avatar
Rory Dunagan Really? islands in the sky and ground that lights up? if you're really honest than I feel sorry for you.
Luqe Prisecaru the meaning and delicacy of a film is more important than lame ass cgi
Rory Dunagan Avatar LOOOOOOOL
+bob baloni Innovative and creative cgi isn't lame.
I thought Apocalypse Now should have been on this list, even today, I see it on Tv or on my DvD and it looks so great, better than most modern movies!
The only film I felt should have been here that wasn't.
Yesss
Truer words have not been spoken all day.
I'd like to see a top 10 most beautiful video games. Okami, LittleBigPlanet, Red Dead Redemption, Wind Waker, and Bioshock Infinite would be shoe-ins.
Journey
Bayonetta
Deadlight
sounds good. they might be making it but you can always suggest it here watchmojo.com/my/suggest.php
The Last of Us anyone?
Portal, ets2, hitman
Far Cry 3
the fountain
What makes you think that Darren Aronofsky didn't use CGI in The Fountain? It's full of it.
"Instead of using CGI, Darren Aronofsky chose to do the special effects for the film by using micro-photography of chemical reactions on tiny petri dishes. He has said that CGI would take away from the timelessness of the film and that he wants the film to stand the test of time."
Where's Apocalypse now ?
yeah. that one should be on here.
Yes.
Yes!!
@A M lame joke. Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece. Period.
@A M well, everybody has their own taste. I'm glad that you appreciated this movie. For the first time i didn't like Blade Runner, but now it' my one of the favorite movies ever.
Darren Arronfsky's The Fountain doesn't even get an honorable mention??? For shame!
I'd be highly impressed if he did that without CGI.
tobi2731 he did all of that without CGI! I was impressed too when I found out
David Jensen word
tobi2731 He used macrophotography, instead of CGI.
And chemical tanks (I think they are called)
where are the Nicolas Winding Refn movies at?
Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining are marvelous.
"Gone with the Wind" and "Barry Lyndon" is missing.
I'd vote for Gone With The Wind too. It was filmed like a painting. The colors are amazing.
Agreed. Barry Lyndon is beautiful. The candlelit scenes are unlike anything I've ever seen before or since in a motion picture.
Agree totally! Though Barry Lyndon was mentioned, as they pick only one movie from one director
thank you Barry Lyndon looks much better than 2001
Yeah but 2001 A Space Odyssey is way better and you can only have 1 per director.
The Revenant.
How do you think they filmed the scene with the horse falling off the cliff? You guessed it, CGI.
+Will Eichenberger they threw the horse right? RIGHT?
Didn't exist during the making of this video. Also, it uses CGI.
The Revenant was nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects.
The film wasn't out when they made the list
What about Memoirs of a Geisha? That's one of the most beautiful to me. That and Marie Antoinette.
mhm, actually when I saw this list I seriously thought Memoirs of A Geisha was gonna be on here... lol
WoWGirl6 ikr?!
thank although memoirs isnt necessarily a good film aside from gong li's steller perf, it is beautiful; one of the most, and marie antoinette is my favorite film of all time. but as usual watchmojo, just considers anything scifi and male driven superior to and honest beautiful film, especially feminine. by the way if u liked those films try days of heaven, lola montes, the house of mirth, tess,
I also love Amelie.
I fell asleep, what were you saying?
2001 is my favorite movie of all time - it is an experience that I have yet to find in another film- and Kubrick my favorite director, nice to see the movie made the list.
Try Tarkovsky films
What about "A Clock Work Orange"?
These films would look a whole lot better if watchmojo uploaded it in 720p
They do. When a vid is first uploaded the quality is lower
Nerdonomicon LP No, they've released only a few videos in HD. The majority is in 480p.
uztre6789 Due to the fact that the films within aren't 720p, most are 480, scaling up to 720p HD would make the quality drop then rise, and make them look worse.
Why do people keep complaining about WatchMojo's videos not being in 720p? It's just pathetic that people need a 720p resolution to enjoy something. Not to mention that the clips they're showing aren't in 720p, so they can't.
Perfume the story of a murderer? Les Miserables? Amadeus? Hero? City Lights? Perhaps the Godfather? No, seriously tho, Hero should be in top 5
I agree I got Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger, City Lights, Godfather, Perfume The Story of A Murderer, Les Miserables, The Fountain, The Fall, Memoirs of A Geisha, Into The Wild, and more in my mental list of the most beautifully shot films. Lots of what you just mentioned!
STRAIGHT UP!!! Hero in the top 5! AT LEAST!! The cinematography in that movie took my breath away! How did that movie not make the count?!
I would add "Brazil" and the "Unforgiven" to the list somewhere.
Curse of the Golden Flower was gorgeous
Phoenix Down youre beautiful :)
Phoenix Down That immediately came to my mind as well! Stunningly beautiful movie.
Phoenix Down Well, WatchMojo is noted for being poorly researched and with a definite bias against foreign language films. I have watched the film of which you speak, at the cinema no less. However, Zhang Yimou's film "Curse of the Golden Flower" does indeed contain plenty of CGI--note the overabundance of soldiers in the battle sequences. They're the product of CGI. If you want a really beautiful film from Zhang Yimou, minus CGI, my advice is to check out "Ju Dou". Every single person I know who has seen it raves about the dazzling colours of the cinematography. It deserves to be on this list.
Was hoping "A Single Man" would be in here
***** A very attractive movie, certainly.
***** It was one of the first ones I thought of as well.
***** I love the cinematography in A Single Man
***** If you liked A Single Man, then check out Maurice, you might like it as well.
***** Yeah I expected a single man aswell and also amelie.
I'd like to put my two cents in for "The Black Stallion", cinematography by Caleb Deschanel (his first major feature film!). The island scenes, including underwater photography, are especially beautifully filmed and colorful. The scenes shot in Canada for the boy's home aren't bad looking, either.
Spike Lee's "Her"
spike jonze fam
+Sam Wertz fuck lee
The tree of life is absolutely stunning!, the theme of life itself is well depicted and Brad Pitt's performance is one of his finest
I completely agree!!
What about avatar? James Cameron had to travel all the way to pandora to give us that visual masterpiece
Obvious troll is obvious
Johnathan Lemus It's a joke.
Requiem for a dream anyone ?
As well as Apocalypse Now !! This movie blows me away with its beauty...
i know, it was really really good. cant believe they left it
requiem for a dream is one great movie for sure, but i dont think it would fit in a top 10 most BEAUTIFUL movies list
Ehh, I do think it would, but I guess it is arguable...we all have different perspectives on what beauty is too.
Have you seen The Fountain? I'd highly recommend it, considering Darren Aronofsky who directed Requiem for a Dream made it as well. It's more experimental, but still fits his style
El Topo ? Gorgeous long shots of the desert , lots of warm colors and a ton of beautiful symbolist scenery.
Yaaasss The Fall is on the list ! one of my fav movie ever
No Stalker?
No Paris, Texas?
No Days of Heaven?
No The Holy Mountain?
You guys should watch more movies.
I'm not overly impressed with CGI, there is nothing real about it. If you have the right program, you can "create" almost anything. The true genius of these films, lie in the creativity, and imagination of the directors.
Rachel Garber that's why CGI stands for Computer. Generated. Imagery.
the life of pi was a beautiful movie
+Alyssa Sault oh, yep, that was a real tiger in the boat! LOL
+Gareth Lloyd lol okay good point, still a beautiful film
+Alyssa Sault read the title of the video before you comment without even a thought yeeesh
I'm so sad that there was no wes Anderson in this what the heck
WHERE ARE DRIVE AND ONLY GOD FORGIVES?! Those are some absolutely beautiful films
only god forgives is a cinematographer's DREAM!!!
TheJeffum most beautiful i've ever seen
American Beauty is absolutely underrated and I’ll never stop saying it. Such an extraordinarily beautiful and intense movie. It’s the best movie ever made in my opinion and my all time favorite
Where the fuck is the spongebob movie?!?!
Obvious troll is obvious
Nerdonomicon LP obvious cinemasins reference is obvious, but definitely not frowned upon.
Not on this list apperantly. Good luck with your search man.
It's an animated film, dude. You can tell if you really pay attention.
I think Wes and company really knocked it out of the park with Grand Budapest Hotel.
"The Virgin Suicides" is one of my favourite beautiful movies.
what about Memoirs of a Geisha?
I wanna throw out Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," that movie is absolutely spectacular. As well as "The Fountain" and "Big Fish."
"Strings" really need to be on this list!!!!
It took 10 years to make, the sunset and everything is painted by hand, and the way they work those wooden doll marionettes is unbelievable!!
Oh, and I recommend the original danish voices!!
I'm so happy to see The Fall on here! It is one of my favorites ever! I wish it was a bit more popular.
I thought Marie Antoinette could've got a honourable mention
***** Yes
I've never heard of 2001: a space odyssey
Hello Hal 9001 how are you?
i don't what you're talking about, sasuke.
seriously???
I dunno why…but I feel like you're not telling the truth…there's just something about you that makes me think that you indeed have seen 2001: A Space Odyssey
*****
1. not an insult
2. I was saying seriously to how bad of a joke that was
HERO!!!!!!! How did you forget one of the most visually stunning movies ever made!?!
Amazing film
Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" was definitely lacking in plot, but it was pretty gorgeous,
Does Fantasia count?
The Little Princess
Hero (with Jet Li), Curse of the Golden Flower, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Planet of the Apes (all of them)
The 10 Commandments
Titanic (not sure how much CGI it used though)
id be glad to see your top 10 movie scores
I'd say from Rushmore (1998) to The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Wes Anderson has made some beautifully detailed films. No love?
And PTA's The Master (2012)? C'mon . . .
the first 5 should have been all Kubric
+Andy Andere I don't think so. There are more good and aesthetic directors in the World. Like Nicholas Winding Refn, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Kim-Ki Duk, Sion Sono, Christopher Doyle (Cinematographer), Luis Bunuel, Godard, Park Chan-Wook. They are all on the Same Level like Kubric. In my opinion the most beautiful movies are Fallen Angels and Ruined Heart.
Mad Villain
cool
+Andy Andreev Hell no.
Kubrick. Or Tarkovsky. Or Lean. Or Welles.
Samsara? The aesthetics in that are very pleasing on the soul.
The Duellists features some of the best set and costume design I've ever seen. Every scene is a peice of art.
In The Wizard of Oz, Kansas was presented in sepia, not black and white
I was thinking "Dances With Wolves."
I wouldn't have minded seeing the original "Around the World in Eighty Days" on this list. That one was stunning.
I would add The Last Samurai, the Secret of Kells, and maybe even the newest Pride and Prejudice.
What about "Chrouching tiger, hidden dragon"?
Ang Lee used a lot of very subtle CGI (new and groundbreaking stuff there) in his very beautiful film. Therefore, it didn't qualify for this list.
Stephen Atwood
Okay, it was a couple of years since i saw it, therefore i didn't remember if it was that much cgi.
I remember that it was beautiful though.
"The fountain" (2006) is my favorite movie and has amazing camera tricks to make beautiful images with no CGI. I would put it at #1 but i'm bias because it's my fav. I'd highly recommend that movie. And if you've seen it and didn't know there wasn't any CGI, I'd watch it again. The imagery is unreal.
Where the heck is Little Shop of Horrors? That plant took 60 technicians to operate, and there was only one CGI shot in the whole movie! Also, if it made it on to the list, I guarantee it would've been the Director's Cut. That whole rampage scene at the end was miniatures!
Asa akira's movies are beautiful!
Enamorada (1946) by Emilio Fernández, cinematography by Gabriel Figueroa. some effects and scenes are just amazing!
Let's not forget "The Sound of Music", filmed on location in the hills of the real Salzburg, Austria. The visuals of that film, more than anything else, make me want to go there.
Into The Wild should've been atleast an honorable mention
Oh I am waiting for "spring, summer, fall, winter and... spring" to make one of your lists. wonderful movie on so many levels.
I personally love how Beasts of the Southern Wild looks. It might not represent different people that well, but the visuals were stunning. I don't know about the use of CGI in it though.
You missed 'Moonrise Kingdom'. Its beautiful as hell! :)
I think Jan Svankmajer's Alice should be on this list. I absolutely love the use of varied color palettes in different levels of saturation, and the simple but precise camera work.
I would think that The Master by Paul Thomas Anderson would have to be one of the most visually stunning films of recent years that does not employ CGI. The camera work was elegant often rotating between wide pans of gorgeous landscapes and intimate closeups that give you a window into the soul of the characters. I find myself continuously surprised at how little appreciation this particular film has gotten from the world of critical film review.
Skyfall?? Hero?? Walter Mitty??
What the fuck is up with Watchmojo's mindset that only old movies are good?
"Walter Mitty"
I would be very careful about criticising other peoples opinion on films ;)
TheBT?? the list is (supposed) to be based off of beauty, not success or fame. Although WatchMojo doesn't seem to recognize that. making a movie black and white doesn't make it beautiful or visually striking.
Deathpool using black and white doesn't not make it beautifully striking. Btw, Tree of Life is "new", so i guess you're doubly wrong.
infraGrey Films one move out of ten. two if you count the one from 2006. idk if I'm just too young to notice it, but I don't see anything 'beautiful' or 'visually striking' about 7 out of these movies. the only 'old' ones I agree with are Lawrence of Arabia and 2001.
You mean MOST of the movies ever made?
A video about visual beauty presented at such a low bit rate it distorts the image. Perfect.
Would it have been that hard to upload a high res version?
It's almost unbelievable for most of these. When trying to make a Bladerunner or 2001, today's filmmakers wouldn't even know how to do it without computers. Nice video!
Barry Lyndon.....
Shawshank Redemption?
OK for the list. 2001, the most beautiful non-CGI film ever made? Ehhh... No so sure about it. Movies like Apocalypse Now, Interstellar, Once upon a time in America, the Thirteenth Warrior, Barry Lyndon, War and Peace (the Russian version) and The Mission (1986) should have been there, and possibly higher than this film.
Interstellar didn't use green screens. But I'd did use CGI
***** Right. I had forgotten about this.
@10:09 "Something tells me, we aint in Kansas anymore" - Andre 3000 on the song Sixteen
Some other films I'd include are Gone With The Wind - the breathtaking use of Technicolor, Abel Gance's Napoleon. - which features the first example of what would be known as Cinerama (but, done in the 20's), the Dream-like work of Fellini in 81/2, or Juliet of The Spirits, Purple Noon (the original version of Patricia Highsmith's book. The remake, The Talented Mr. Ripley), Jacques Tati's work in Playtime, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg - NO one ever walks out of it not crying). The Red Balloon, That's a few. Dr. Zhivago. The opening scene of The Sound Of Music is dazzling, but, that's just a scene).
The Visconti film Il Gattopardo (aka, The Leopard), is quite beautiful, and stands out to me in this respect. Ran was an extremely Gory movie. Not surprised knowing Kurosawa's work.
horrible, horrible list. Kubrick alone has several more beautiful films than 2001 (Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut), not to mention no Antonioni? No Tarkovsky? No Mizoguchi? No Murnau? I like the Wizard of Oz and American Beauty but they had no business being on this list (neither did The Last Emperor). Also Tree of Life as the one Malick film? That's probably his least visually "beautiful" film of all his work, and I'm assuming that's what the criteria was
I actually think The Tree Of Life is Malick's most beautiful film. I am blown away by both the camera angles and the quality of the images every time I watch it.
Alex Meyer ugh its so pretentious, and i would consider it more of a tone poem than a film, days of heaven is far superior.
417Au email, to0ww7i4u7o@ 2, I have been a l
A movie being in black and white doesn't make it visually stunning....
true
the fountain (2006). no cgi, and a stunning visual.
A single mean, melancholia and the Grand Budapest Hotel were also beautiful visually!
Honestly i think Russian ark should have been on this list its soooo beautiful
top 10 beautiful video games
I would say Lars Von Trier's 'Melancholia', but there's a lot of CGI involved. Still beautiful though. :)
One film that always seems to get overlooked, and which belongs under this heading (which, let's face it, is never going to cover the films that deserve to be on it) is Ridley Scott's The Duelists. Like watching a come-to-life painting of the Napoleonic period.
