This is the best Oscar Special. They’re all phenomenal, but the anniversary of the Rat Pack movie and they hire people to play the actors in the movie and not the actual Rat Pack. Mark being awful in impressions then going into a coma doing a “scene” that’s not in any of the movies. Greg’s poster outfit. The Jaws 2 birthday and all of their tributes are from other Jaws movies. The wonderful thing about On Cinema is that quite often it will be like the 5th, 10th, 20th+ time you've watched the same scene, you pretty much know it word for word, and then all of a sudden a new wave of realisation will hit you about the degree of farce unfolding before you - like right now, the opening with Frankie Valli's less famous brother trying to gee up the near-empty completely random Seafood Restaurant in New Jersey, and how painfully he his failing to generate even a round of applause from sheer pity. It's amazing, I mean none of it makes any sense, but somehow they never fail to capture the most pathetic and ridiculous possible manifestation of whatever a film review/Oscar tribute show is 'supposed' to be. The constant mispronounciations, the cameos from bewildered Z-listers plumbed from the depths of cinema decades passed, the increasingly dreadful - yet commercially fascinating - catering, that legendary Hollywood brand name of Chaplain - Tom Chaplain, local chili entrepeneur, naturally, then the central friction of the clash of personalities between freewheeling, fad-loving motormouth egomaniac ranting and raving about Vladimir Putin and his celebrity pals like Mike Huckabee and Johnny Depp, contrasted by Gregg's endlessly sincere insistence on his delusional theories on film and insistence on recognition being finally paid for the deranged patterns only his expertise are able to ascertain, but that he is determined to bring to the public for the benefit of we the lucky viewers - such as the true 40th Anniversary of Jaws 2, or the long awaited sequel to Kramer v Kramer where we finally get all the loose ends tied up. It's just the greatest...the fucking greatest thing I've ever seen. I'm so glad it exists, it shouldn't, it really is a miracle, but thank god it does....

Joe Estevez manages to come off as a likeable character even in the segment where he's reading someone else's lines in the Close Encounters segment at the end because he's so earnest.
"GET HIM TO FALL IN LINE!!" The power and delivery of that line gives me goosebumps. He brought his passion and authenticity to that performance and you can really tell. I'd like to see Decker vs. George Lucas and really see Tim soar.
The details never cease to amaze. When Gregg reveals the winner of the Super Oscar he puts a special sticker that perfectly fits the only large square in the grid. He knew all along.....

Explain to me how Tim has any culpability in this situation. Tim did not do anything wrong or illegal at the Music Festival, which took place in America where people are free to make their own choices. Nobody forced those kids to smoke that vapor from the snake Doctor San. Tim provided the community with an amazing opportunity to listen to great music and to grow together. It continues the main theme of the show....where there is supposed to be serious movie reviewing going on, but it just ends up being about Tim's personal hubris

And Gregg watching over the whole thing like Don Corleone
You’re both typical hunks, who think you know everything about everything.
An amazing comment. Really hard to summarize what makes this whole thing so enthralling but you've done it justice

Spot on man. This shouldn't exist and yet we have 10 seasons and specials to accommodate them all.

Extremely upsetting to see what happened to Mark but I was relieved to see that Tim was professional enough to have him sign a waiver

Joe Estevez manages to come off as a likeable character even in the segment where he's reading someone else's lines in the Close Encounters segment at the end because he's so earnest.

Same here. When Tim starts laughing, Greg starts clapping, JAWS is on the screen with the overlaid alien / hand gesturing, and that incessant music... I basically lose all muscle control and collapse to the floor unable to breath.
I've watched this sequence over and over. I still laugh uncontrollably when the alien music swells for the 4th time.
Why why why is that so funny...I can't breath I'm laughing so hard at that stupid fucking music lol
One of my favorite recurring elements of the Oscar Specials is Tim crafting some joke, often a play on words, and just hammering it in the entire time. Ex. When Ellen hosted and he would periodically say "If Oscar was [pause] GENEROUS..." and in this case being "Rat Pack trap"
Its just normal to build up confidence and establish comedic dominance in social settings, tim is powerful dealing with gregg is important
Hearing Tim try to pronounce "rat pack trap" was amazing. How did they not break??
1:55:38 Joe's reaction to Tim saying impressionists are sort of stunt men who deal with risk after Mark is carried out

The shark theme is clearly Greg trying to hint that the show has "jumped the shark". It's a plea for help. Look at the steering wheel hanging on the wall above the TV; Notice how it's not attached to anything. This symbolizes Greg's complete loss of control over the show and Tim. Also notice the "Beach Closed: Do Not Enter" sign positioned oh-so-conveniently behind Tim. It's a metaphor for Tim's mind: it's closed, and it's a dangerous place. Greg is placing the clues right in front of us...Tim is a bad man and must be stopped.
dflosounds Gregg is always the ‘elephant in the room’. That’s why I like to compare him to Ganesh.

Markheads and Greggheads have no shame.
Gregg tried to do this with the VFA, to copy Tim, but has failed to produce the same effect.
Tim is just incredible. I dont know if he was born 1000 years too early, or 1000 years too late. All I know is I am glad it happened.
Gregg is a brilliant actor. For him to play this so straight like he does. I don’t know how he does it.
Just a reminder that Mark went into a coma for a year and suffered permanent brain damage just so we could see a video clip of Gregg standing in line at Universal Studios.
