Jewel had a rough childhood growing up. Sometimes her mother and her had to sleep in their car. Living in Alaska, that couldn't be easy.
I lived in Alaska for 3 years. Her 1st cousin was my best friend when I was there. Im not sure if she was born yet if she was she would have been very little. I just love listening to her sing.
I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and living in the city isn’t that hard but her folks were homesteaders who wanted to live off the grid near Homer. Living off of the grid is hard work no matter where but Alaska adds a little more difficulty than other areas with its climate and seasonal temperatures. I was born in 1972 not 1872 so there’s no reason imo to go without running water, general plumbing, electricity, etc., but to each his own.

Diane Mccrea Alaska is a great place to visit but it takes a special person who’ll enjoy living there. You definitely feel away from everything up there.

Funny thing is she was like 16 or something when she wrote this . What did she really know about heartbreak at that age?! But damn! She's got this f*ing grown ass woman weeping! and as hard as it is to imagine, she's more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside, and that's saying a whole hell of a lot! Always kept her values, and has a amazing career that she has kept while staying true to herself. Really inspirational. Totally agree with your comment that she's incredibly versatile and never sticks with the same version. That is talent. Obvious she really means every word she says. Hell, we mean it for her!
She wrote this song when she was homeless and slept in her car, she worked in a diner, all she had was her car full of clothes and stuff and in the evening sometimes took her quitar and sang in some places. The entire album "Pieces of you" was written at this stage of her life. So she was kind of heartbroken, she kind of known what a broken heart means. That's why the album and all the song feels so real. She talked about this period in her concerts.
