Jewell's father Atz Kilcher, on Discovery Channel's 'Alaska: The Last Frontier,' some of those home movies are really her and her dad.
Both women come from very humble beginnings and have amazing life stories.
IIRC, from watching Alaska the Last Frontier, the Kilcher (Jewel's) family left Switzerland before the start of WW2 and started a homestead in Alaska.
I recently lost my Daddy. This song reminds me of all the times he told me I was strong because those where the shoulders I stand on. Thank you guys. Haven't had a real cry in awhile..❤️

Jewel's grandfather immigrated from Switzerland to Alaska. Jewel was born in Utah but grew up in Alaska, That appears to be where these may have been filmed, However, the videos look a lot earlier than when Jewel was born (1974). These may be her mother's childhood home videos. They look like they were probably filmed in the 1950's or 60's. I'm just speculating of course, Jewel's family was featured on the Discovery Channel show Alaska: The Last Frontier, which chronicles their day-to-day struggles living in the Alaskan wilderness.
This is her real family in Alaska. The show “ Alaska, the last frontier.” Great show. Jewel appeared on the show several times.
Her family shown there came from Germany to Alaska when her father and siblings were children. The woman shown in the REAL clips was Jewel’s grandmother.
Her voice comes in all different versions.
Jewel and Dolly both grew up in poverty. Jewel in the Alaskan bush and Dolly in the foot hills of Tennessee. I don’t think either one had running water or even electricity and had to hunt in order to survive.

If I remember correctly, Jewel’s grandmother gave up a lucrative opera/music career in Germany to live very low middle class farming life in Alaska, because she saw WW2 coming and didn’t want to have children in Europe.
So Jewel feels like being a successful musician is honoring her grandmother’s sacrifice.
He was a delegate to the Alaska constitutional convention and a state senator who settled in Alaska after emigrating from Switzerland.

Brad touched my heart with recounting his ancestral history of slavery - and here he is free - listening to music in a mobile home park. I too wonder if I have done enough to satisfy the dreams of my ancestors on how they imagined how their prodigy would be - a hundred years into the future.

This was a fantastic review what a great song! I didn't know they did this duet. Both very talented women and similar backgrounds as children all be it different places but both grew up in relative poverty and had to work hard just to live and then struck out in there own at a young age and became successful. Loved the old Family footage of Jewel an see the Kilchers that's amazing to have recorded memories from way back then, pretty unique.

My father passed about two months ago, this song hits hard. Music was a huge deal in our family - still very different from this setting, since we are Latino… but it is still relatable. Ultimately, they are all our parents. Thanks to their hard work and sacrifice I’m living a life they could have only dreamed of.

She is a part of the Kilcher family in Alaska thats been on TV for 13 seasons. That is actually how she was raised. A family that was raised right at the place in this Video. The whole family sings and yodel. This family works very hard on the Ranch and take care of each other with total love and care.

Listening to ya talk, and bringing up slavery, I couldn't help but think how history has led to this moment, where you are posting a video and I am watching. If Rome had never existed, would we? If slaves had never come to America, would you two exist? If the Cherokee Indians hadn't met the white man, would I exist? All of it, the good and the bad from the dawn of man has led to this moment, right now. Pretty crazy to think about.

As a humble request, you should react to the singer Anastacia. She's american born but criminally underrated in her home country. I've never heard this song before. Pretty song. Brad - your commentary was quite moving. My ancestors didn't suffer through slavery as yours did - so i can't fully appreciate your burden of living the best life you can - but there are common threads of humanity that run through us all - and i have a similar burden to my parents and their parents...etc. But i love your optimism on life. I believe optimism and pessimism ultimately become self-fulfilling. So i hope the best for you and Lex, wherever your lives take you. Thanks for posting this.
