Rolex Submariner vs Sea-Dweller vs Deepsea | Watchfinder & Co.

  • A Rolex and the sea are like, well, a duck to water, the brand having kickstarted the entire dive watch legacy pretty much singlehandedly. As far as credentials go, there’s only one you need to know: a Rolex watch has been to the deepest part of the ocean and survived-and that was back in 1960. A watch literally cannot go any deeper than that. And so, Rolex dive watches have come to be heralded as the very best, and we’ve got three of them. But which is the best of the best?

Have a couple hundred dives (max 40m) on my 1998 Submariner. Used to be my one and only watch for about 10 years, now I wear it mainly when I go diving. Not that I need it (dive computer does a better job) but because of the good all times (21 years now) and the way it feels to have it back on my wrist 😀

The bracelet’s guidelock on the Deepsea is truly fantastic, so easy to adjust, and when travelling facilitates easy/quick adjustments for expanstion of the wrist that’s enevitable at high altitudes or going from cold to hot/hot to cold climates. Definitely the main feature of the watch that’s indigenous to the deepsea that’s rarely called out but yet so innovative, reliable, easy to use and useful/practical. Love it !!
Great video, great channel, great presentations in all you do, well done.

Hey guys. Not sure I should admit to this, but I own a DSSD and I don’t baby it - at all. I’ve taken it diving - both desk and ocean - running, mountain biking, camping. It’s my everyday watch and by that I don’t mean to sound snobby or anything - it took me a while to save up for it and I enjoy wearing a lot because it makes me smile.
My philosophy is if you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on a watch that has amazing build quality and you love it, why not enjoy as much as you can? Isn’t that the point of owning these time pieces? Because they make us happy; they pull at our heartstrings?
And just to be clear and safe, I bought an insurance policy on my DSSD because, hey, you never know...

Why would you not want to admit using your Deepsea as a daily beater?? That’s what I use mine for. I’ll never use the 12,000ft but I love the over engineering of the watch

      @MCFCTheMadHatter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Ed! I too love the over engineering with it as well, not to mention, relative to my wrists and hands, it looks like a thicker Submariner. It’s been through a lot and just keeps on ticking - averaging about +1.6 seconds a day per 90 days when I measure it. One great watch!

I read the comments here and as always with the subject Rolex, there are the different fan groups. I am happy that Rolex, Omega and others make great watches. I worked for one of the groups and I can tell you, that the atmosphere was always that of a lot of respect for each other and the products. A gentleman's rivalry. It was also this sporty rivalry that gave the world some of the best watches.

I have a Sea-Dweller (1665) which was my 21st birthday present from my parents in 1977. I also have a GMT II (116710LN) - luxury purchase 10 years ago. I have some diving in the past (recreational stuff and used a Citizen Promaster Diver - didn’t want to scratch the Sea-Dweller ! )
Strange they bought me a Rolex as my Father was an Omega man, wearing the watch he was issued when he was in the Fleet Airarm (WWII) every day until his death in 2014 . (This watch was apparently ‘well worn’ so he had it serviced and recased, keeping the original white face, in 1956 by Dennison - done ‘privately’, after all, it was ‘his watch’ !) I am its custodian now - a prized possession !!

I love watches. Although I cannot justify spending this kind of money on a time piece, I appreciate them more than perhaps someone with means who could own several watches like these Rolex diving watches. However, except for the original Sea Master the other two 'upgrades' were way too thick for daily use imho, but I am sure they would both make great diving watches for the affluent.

My ideal Rolex is an Omega Planet Ocean. In fact, the Planet Ocean on my wrist right now. Kidding aside, the only reason I would want a Sub is because of James Bond. Connery was a huge Rolex guy, but I don't hold that against him.

Just the job for snorkeling in
    the Mediterranean! 😄 ha ha!
You buy the watch because it's
    beautifully made and designed.
I don't wear my SeaMaster when
I snorkel (I've got an original Seiko Tuna can from the 70's for that!)
I love the 'Deep Sea' - I will buy one
and enjoy just looking at it and
marvelling at the work that went into it.

There is one key issue with all those Rolex achievements. Just as Aegler made all Rolex movements (based mostly on Lemania ebauches), It was "one of Rolex case suppliers", who made Submariner and Seadweller cases. Rolex didn't make anything till 2004 . Unlike Omega, they haven't invented anything. Their Suppliers and Sub-contractors "were tasked" with combining exististing technology in particular watch case production..
Besides ... Blancpain 50 Fathoms and Omega Seamaster, actually predated Rolex Submariner.

Good video/content. But, for ME, features MUCH more imporant to me is being able to read the time at a glance . Under most llight conditions/reflections...which means the watch MUST have an AR coating....which these watches added only recently Sea Dweller last year and the Sub
