I have been wearing my Omega Seamaster Professional Chronograph for 23 years (before Co-axial time) and the watch had gone diving in Hawaii, swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room in the gym. The most depth it had dived down to was about 50 feet and that was all I could take. These super deep dive watches are for people who appreciate a fine piece of craftsmanship and not particularly for everyday wearing. The Rolex is a very pretty watch and Omega is a watch you can actually buy any time without a ridiculously long waiting list as the Rolex, and Rolex price their watch out of reach for most people me included. By the way my 23 years old Omega had it first service two years ago and it is now running at about 1 and a half second fast per month, yes month not day. My Rolex Datejust two tone runs about 5 seconds fast per day. Not locking Rolex it is just my situation.

The deepest scuba dive is around 330 meters, so the depth arms race is a bit daft really. I guess if you accidentally drop your watch overboard on your yacht, and mount a multi million dollar recovery operation, from the sea floor 1000s of meters below, it'll still work. So that's good.

All of those things are correct. If you don't like quartz, don't think it's a like for like comparison etc etc, that's another argument entirely. The water resistance is how many metres? The deepest part of the ocean is how deep? I'm sorry, I don't see the contradiction 🤔
I do, however, see that you concede it can go as deep in a later paragraph after claiming it can't.
Finally, and I didn't realise I was talking to an eleven year old ('haters'? Really?) I'm pretty sure that a subjective opinion is still allowed in these times. I'll qualify that opinion by saying that yes, I think a watch that is made for the wrist and measures 28mm deep is idiotic. Rolex and omega are only doing this for one up man ship over the other. Its marketing bragging rights by the two largest and largely most boring watch makers in Switzerland. They've done it so the accountant with the seamaster can justify his purchase over the accountant with the sub in they pub on a Friday night. ".... Yes, but omega hold the record for deepest dive..."
Neither of whom have subjected their watches to anything deeper than the bath. Making a watch that functions at eleven thousand metres under the sea is idiotic. (in my opinion)
The sinn is completely different - I agree with you here - as it is made to be as hard as nails. This watch will outlive you in any of your adventures. It's built to be tough as old boots and actually used. It is a functioning tool watch and not a marketing wet dream.
I don't know who the chap was referring to when he said 'that is simply incorrect' but he was incorrect. You were correct in what you said and so was I.
Can the Sinn go to the deepest part of our ocean without letting water in? Yes.
Is it affordable? It's not cheap but it's much much much more affordable and attainable that the rolex or omega.
Is it wearable? It's big but it's not crazy big.

The new Rolex has a HE valve while the Omega that went to the bottom did not, doesnt that say something about the difference in build quality - that the Rolex was not built so as to prevent gasses from penetrating the case like the Omega was. Same with the Omega 2000m Ultra Deep vs like a Rolex Sea Dweller...

    • @bloodymarvelous4790
      @bloodymarvelous4790 หลายเดือนก่อน

The helium escape valve is pointless at that depth. You're not breathing gases at 1100 atmosphere. Omega just chose to omit it, since the case can easily manage the decompression from the depths of saturation diving. Rolex just added it because it's a staple of the model series. The Sea-Dweller has it, the Deepsea Sea-Dweller has it, so the Deepsea Challenge Sea-Dweller has it.
Also, it's better for the helium to escape gradually, rather than explosively when you open the winding crown.

The inner ring ‘..gas escape valve…’ on the Rolex serves only to shrink its main dial imho. Plus, the watch is twice the price of the Omega. Both pieces are too thick & big to wear (for 99% of us) anyway. Technically impressive but everyday useless. This is just the two brands playing tit-for-tat at a game no one plays ;-)

The dial size is the same as every other Rolex dive watch. It's not shrunk, it's just not sized up. The inner ring serves to prevent the watch from buckling under the extreme pressure at 11,000 meters due to the pressure difference between the air in the watch (1 bar) and the water outside (1,101 bar).

The Challenger Deep is 10,971m below sea level. You can theoretically reach higher pressures in a laboratory environment, but it will have no meaning in real life. The Deepsea Challenge on James Cameron Challenger submersible was rated to 12,000m. The Omega Ultra Deep was rated to 15,000m. The commercially available Deepsea Challenge is rated to 11,000m.
That's 29m deeper than the deepest point in the ocean. Will it survive 12,000m? Sure. 15,000m? Most likely, since a 25% safety margin of the rated depth must be taken into account.
The commercially available Omega Ultra Deep has a depth rating of 6,000m. The Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller has a depth rating of 3,900m. The Titanic lies at 3,840m.
I've gotten a lot of flak for pointing out that the depth ratings of the Rolex watches actually are related to real world depths, while the Omega watches just seem to be designed to "beat" the depth ratings of Rolex. I guess the Omega fanboys are out in force (either that or the Rolex haters are).
But let's face it, the depth these watches can be made to go to is an impressive feat of engineering. Does it result in an everyday wearable watch? Obviously not, but making the fastest road car in the world doesn't make it attainable for everyone either, and their records will still be beaten by purpose built salt flat jet cars.
I applaud Rolex for releasing the Deepsea Challenge Sea-Dweller, and I wouldn't mind having one and strapping it to my drysuit. No, I'll probably never go below 40m, but that's not the point. You won't be going 400kph on the Autobahn in a Bugatti Chiron either.

The opening line regarding how deep has someone gone is funny because I always wonder why we spend so much on deep divers watches (myself included). I’ve never dived. But even those who have likely don’t go frequently enough to justify a 6,000M divers watch. So we buy them basically because they look cool and in the event we go in water that’s deeper than a swimming pool.

I can't stand watch manufacturers simply dumping in the same small dial of a standard model like Planet Ocean or Deepsea into a much larger case with an ultra broad bezel but tiny dial and crystal. Don't they look lopsided and odd?

I honestly get the feeling that Rolex has run out of ideas. First, a left-handed watch nobody asked for, and now this. As a technical exercise, it's fascinating. However... its size makes it impractical to wear, and being the first production Rolex in titanium (hell, just being a Rolex in general) it's going to be next to impossible to get at retail. Plus, at this stage, it's claiming a mantle that it hasn't even achieved yet - at least the Omega Ultra Deep can actually claim to have been to the bottom of the ocean. It's also ugly to boot (or should that be, Das Boot?)

Omega : let's make a new cool super diver watch, over priced, but that one could still buy at an AD !
    Rolex :
    - Guys ! Omega is making a new super cool Titanium Diver watch...we need to do something about it ! Call the engineering department immediately !
    - Errr...boss...It's a very long time we do not have a serious engineering departement anymore. We are like L'oreal you know - most of the staff is marketing, waiting list managers and
accountants. We still have a phony engineering departement but you know that is to make believe we are a real watch company and give a good pretext for our custommer that are ready to
buy our outdated and silly priced product !
    - So there is nothing really we can do about it ? We must make better...go deeper !!! We are the leader of the watch market (and of the free world incidently) !!!
    - Well...may be we can changle the name of the metal we use for the case. It will be normal Titanium - you know the one everyoen uses now for at least a decade and we are still not using
yet, but may be we could name it after ourselves. That will look like a better Titanium !
    - Yeah...good idea...the stupids will love it ! We could name it...errr...let me thinnk...Ro..Role
    - RLXTitanium !
    - Great !!! Wonderfull..Amazing...RLX instead of Rolex, gives a bit of mystery, sounds high tech...Go for it !
    - Ok now...if we want to really go deep - I do not know how to do it. It's tough down there you know...
    - You have to find a solution ! We must remain the leader of the watch industry (and of the free world)
    - Look...we the engineering resources we have now...Frankly...I can only see a quick and dirty fix.
    - Nevermind : the marketing departement will find a way to transform the piece of junk in a must have watch ! They are genious, you know...and you can always count on the conspicuous
consumption pavlovian behaviour of our custommers...
    - Ok..well...let's put one of our outdated never re-engineering caliber in a batyscaphe...
    - hein ??!! you want to put our caliber in a Blancpain watch ? Are you nuts ???
    - No, no..I mean a mini submarine..something that can go deep, you know...so that our watch is protected
    - Our clients are children, but that one will not make it. Find something else...or I send you to Omega
    - No please !!! They would never take me there - I'me too lame !!!
    - Ok then find something !
    - Ok, ok...well..I think that if we put the caliber under a 51.4 mm wide case that will be 28.5 mm high, that should be okay !
    - But that will be horrible...that would look like...a Ploprof ! What an ugly watch !
    - Sorry boss, but I have nothing better to offer at the moment...
    - Yeah I know - we all got used to be mediocre and still sell our watches. So why try harder...?

However, 50mm + when watches are getting smaller again!? Pretty much unwearable & most likely, like most all Rolex sport pieces, unavailable at their boutiques to most buyers only wanting this specific piece at anywhere close to suggested retail. Like most everything else they “sale”.
