    I own and wear a Sea Dweller, 126600…..it’s a very legible watch to read with it’s larger dial and it’s cyclops date magnifying feature…. it’s a welcoming update for my failing eye sight compared to my older Sea Dweller 16600 that I now find harder to read with its smaller dial indices and date feature. What I like about the anniversary Sea Dweller compared to the Sub is the stamped case back and beefier bracelet on the larger 43mm case and the “Red” text on the dial writing that sets it’s apart as a nod to it’s vintage heritage. The level of additional manufacturing features with its helium escape mechanism and bracelet extension alone makes it a more labour intensive product to produce that surly commands a higher price over a Sub. This watch is a keeper IMO and by far one of the best if not ….the best… choice in the Rolex collection of professional sport watches.

    Congratulations on 100!! I just picked up a vintage 1999 16613 Sub with black dial. I'm loving it!!! To give an anecdotal idea of what people are wearing, I just spent a week at a world class resort and I only saw one Sub, a new date model in steel with black bezel, and one 5-digit Explorer 2 (Polar). I saw a half dozen two-tone DJ's both old and new, a TT Daytona with white dial, a TT GMT GRNR, a white gold Sky Dweller on their rubber "bracelet", lots of Movados and TT Tags. And TT 31mm DJ's were fairly common on women. Seriously, it's like two tone rules at resorts or something, and I would say that DJ's, not Subs, are much more common.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Joe! Yes the good old DJ is surely the most common Rolex out there, but that's ok, nobody minds that! Two tones are nice summer watches aren't they, and perhaps people feel safer wearing one in a resort?

    I live in the UK and own a black sub within my collection and honestly I see them everywhere. I went to a rugby match at the Cardiff Arms Park recently and was in the hospitality block/boxes. Walking around the corridors and when I used the loo a few times I was taken aback by how many black Subs I saw on men’s wrists. Saw the odd Daytona and GMT’s but saw at least 10 black subs that afternoon and it has put me off it a bit, I don’t wear it so much. Same on holiday around the pool, always see lots of black subs, more so than other watches. Usually wear my polar Explorer out now as I never see any of them!

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Anonymouslyme1 I think this perfectly demonstrates an interesting role that the Sub plays. At a special occasion like a wedding, a party, a poolside holiday, a corporate meeting, a high profile sports event, where people want to purvey an image of themselves in their best light, they wear the Submariner if they have one. That doesn't mean they are everywhere in life, on the streets, at the grocery store, weeding the garden, but they appear en masse at special occasions for sure.

    Hi Mark great video you are getting pretty good at editing I'm producing these videos. Just wondering do you think the sub is more comfortable on the wrist it being smaller? For me as I have 215mm wrist size I find my sea dweller 43 really comfortable and my james Cameron a little bit less comfortable but not a problem. I'm still on the wait list for the green sub but have just got my explorer two which is similar dimensions to the sub and find it no less comfortable than the sea dweller 43 .is this because I have very big wrists? what do you think as you have smaller wrists size? Thanks John 👍.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude
      @TheRandomWatchDude  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks John! 215mm is a big wrist! My view is that the comfort of a watch is more to do with the balance between the watch case, the bracelet and the clasp, than sheer size per se. The more balanced these things are, the better the weight distribution. No hot spots on the wrist. That's why the Explorer and Submariner are so comfortable I think.

      @@TheRandomWatchDude thanks for your reply yes that makes sense I do have some big commercial tool diver watches and it's all designed around function and eligibility . because they have 50mm dials and are extremely thick the bracelet are quite small for the watch and make them uncomfortable to wear long term (but does the job they were designed for) .so in my collection i have what i class as daily wearer's (very comfortable) and night out wearer's (not so comfortable but may be more of a statement watch) thanks John.

    • @TheRandomWatchDude

      To be perfectly honest, if I had to keep one it would be the Submariner. I love my left hand GMT, and wear it a lot. The crown on the left digs into my hand sometimes, which I'm not used to. The bicolour bezel and cyclops makes it rather a lot more visible on the wrist which might not always be what you would wish for. Both are dimensionally perfect, but the Sub wins due to its truly go anywhere styling.

    Great video with good information. As an owner of the Starbucks, I was looking at getting the 43 sea Dweller. I would like a black non date sub, but I don’t really want to have to wait like the Starbucks. I think that with the Rolex market changing. It would probably better getting the 43 grey market. There would probably be a fair wait for the 43 through the Ad. And the price for grey market is close to retail for a new one without the wait.

    Congrats Mark on your 100th video! I enjoy your honest, practical approach - it reminds me there are genuine guys in this hobby who spread the love of collecting, not shallow jerks who flex $$. As for new subs in the wild, your numbers may actually be high. I turned down a date sub at my AD, and then waited 9 more months for the 124060. Sales rep told me it's 10:1 sub dates to no-dates. if Rolex annual output is 120,000 subs (steel + PM), then figure 33% steel, so 40,000 steel (starbucks, date, no-date), of those, if 10% are no-date... that's 4,000 no dates per year. Personally, I don't see a ton of submariners where I live (midwest USA), when travelling I see a few, but have yet to see a fellow 124060 watch in the wild... which is exactly what I like! The Rolex submariner is not a common watch; ones you see are usually date versions. Now the apple watch... THAT is common!

    I'll never be able to afford one, but have always been in love with the Sea Dweller, most especially the 16600. To scratch that itch most effectively, I have opted for the astounding and stunning 39mm Swiss-made Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Red, which pays quite amazing and very high-quality homage to the Rolex Sea Dweller 1665 Double Red ... and costing only ~$500, a mere 1% of that rare Rolex's current price. And all without having to additionally suffer the humiliation of begging, rolling over and playing dead before the AD might place you on a waiting list to perhaps someday have the "privilege" of handing over close to $10,000... for a watch.
    And there's a reason why you won't find many real Rolexes on the street... even on the wrists of those who actually own them. That's because they also know it takes a mugger only 30 seconds to steal that five-figure watch you spent months or even years on a waiting list to finally pay through the teeth to obtain. No thanks.

      @@TheRandomWatchDude Totally, I love both my Superocean and Planet Ocean, the PO is the favourite watch in my collection but the Superocean is more my daily wearer as it seems a bit more rugged and forgiving for everyday use. It's just the price difference between Omega/Breitling and Rolex is fairly substantial, but I'm on the lookout. Dive style watches are my favourite style I've looked at a few Subs and they are a bit more affordable than a Sea Dweller but I have quite a large wrist 44mm sits nicely on my wrist anything less seems a bit small to me, so a Sea Dweller it will be, when the right one comes along.

    Just went to pick up an exceptional 1966 5513 gilt "Bart Simpson" Sub with very heavy lacquer patina/dial discoloration in Italy one week ago ; it perfectly complements the "matte dial" 1967 5513 with very light cream patina of the hour markers already in the collection ; a Sea Dweller might be a target, but it would have to be a 1665, only a 1665, likely the "Great White". It will need to have special patina. Only vintage Rolex in my collection, only domed acrylic, only steel.

    I'm not gonna lie, part of the reason I rarely wear my Sub (16610) is because it's the most prolifically identifiable luxury watch in the world. Absolutely not boring, just, well, maybe a look too common. But really, the main reason is that, as much as I love the beauty and iconic industrial design of it, I simply prefer wearing my other watches that, to me, feel and look better on my wrist. It can be as painful, or as pain free as you want it to be. Yes the ADs get showered with gifts every day. I've been in there and seen a guy walk in and drop a box of donuts on the counter then walk back out again, and he barely said a word. I asked what happens to the donuts, and she said they just take them home to the family. Personally I would gift it all to the local homeless shelter.
