[GOOGLE PIXEL 8 PRO REVIEW / GOOGLE PIXEL WATCH 2 REVIEW]
It took me seven weeks and two trips to tropical microchip conferences to figure out what to say about the new Google Phone … and even then, I had to rope in its sibling smartwatch and earbud buddies to summon anything of substance. Why? Well, as Daniel Bader said on a recent episode of the Android Police podcast about those microchips:
“Talking about these things is the equivalent of talking about drying paint.”
It’s not because they’re not impressive - in fact he was making the opposite point: that mobile silicon has gotten so good across the board that comparing it is ultimately futile if you’re talking to a mainstream audience. And folks: with smartphone reviews, we’re getting to the same exact point!
The Google Pixel 8 Pro lasts all day. Its display is bright. Its speakers are loud. It “feels good,” as they say, “in the hand.” It’s nearly everything a high-end smartphone should be, offered at a competitive price. To quote the Dismemberment Plan: "WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAAAAYYYYYY?"
And that’s good news for the Pixel 8 Pro! Two years after the risky reinvention of the Pixel line, Google has blended boring iteration with buzzworthy innovation to produce a phone that’s easy to recommend. But when you zoom out to include the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Buds Pro that complete the Google mobile ecosystem in 2023 … well, the Pixels get a bit fuzzier. Join me for the MrMobile Google Pixel 8 Pro Review / Pixel Watch 2 Review!

The issues with the Pixel Buds Pro are kind of astonishing. I've had two pairs now, and both of them had issues with fully disconnecting from my phone when I put them in the case. Not only that, but the on-board Google Assistant will occasionally fail to properly initialize, and timers are currently completely broken on them (it'll tell you it set a timer, but it actually won't), and have been so for at least a month. I love Google products and the Google ecosystem, but Google really seems to go out of its way to make it as difficult as possible to do so sometimes. It makes their devices really tough to recommend.

As much as I love the pixel line, it seems as if the pixel buds have many of the same issues as the original corded design for some reason.

That's weird, I used the Buds Pro with 3 different Android devices from Asus, Samsung, and Oneplus, as well as a Windows Laptop and I've never experienced any issues. So perhaps it's the issue with the Pixel phones? Not really surprising if that's the case given Google track records.

From what I heard--and this is hearsay, mind you--Google executives expect each branch of the company to turn a profit. Well, what about Google Assistant? It can't turn a profit, it's literally against its nature to earn revenue directly. Voice assistants and assistant services will always be a money sink, and Google execs are NOT happy about this. They're cutting funding to the Assistant branch of Google. Essentially they're shooting themselves in the foot, from what I understand--again, hearsay here... An assistant isn't there to turn a direct profit. It's there to attract new buyers, and to entice current users to stick around! So Google is essentially self-sabotaging behind the scenes, and I don't expect that to change any time soon, given how long I've seen bad management hang around unpunished in my years alive. As long as the company can turn at least some profit, they'll make as many bad decisions as they please--even if it's costing them, and us, in the long run.

That’s a cheap earphones problem imo.
From what I’ve found with my “cheap” 60€ wireless earphones from a randomish Amazon brand, it’s due to the (lack of) contact with the case as the gold pins don’t align very well.
Having happened to me after a year of use from a random brand, it pissed me off and switched company but if was to happen to me on a 100+€ premium device. I work probably switch ecosystem

Picked up the 8 pro on launch. First pixel ever and first google made phone since nexus 6. Massive inital dissappointment. Mainly due to horrible lag compared to the samsung it replaced. Considered selling it at a loss but ultimately stuck with it. Seems to have had some behind the scenes updates or maybe its some futuristic AI learning algorithm but its a really solid phone now. Performance is awesome. Dont care what the benchmarks say but everything opens instantly and scrolls smoothly. Battery, camera, screen, speakers, build quality are all true flagship quality. Can recommend it to anyone.

Great video as usual, and the beginning really helped exemplify why I feel so anchored to one brand and why trying to move from one to another when you’re in so far into an ecosystem can be challenging. I hope Google fixes its bugs and refines its silicon to a point where it’s less hesitant to recommend. But luckily they aren’t the only option.

Buds staying connected to the phone or not making great contact within the case has been an issue since the first true wireless Pixel Buds. I've had those, the A series, and the Pro Buds and while the problem is less frequent on my Pros, it still happens often enough to be frustrating, especially when I've never had this happen on Airpods or buds from Samsung, Soundcore, Razer, Jabra, and even a couple of really cheap no name Chinese sets. I also had an issue with my Pros where the colored touchpad started separating from the rest of the earbud - though Google was great about replacing them. Never had an issue with the multipoint though, it's always been flawless for me.
The Pros are awesome on paper but have the classic Google jank and lack of QC that's present in all their hardware, plus the lack of an earhook makes them one of the least stable-in-the-ear earbuds of I've tried, especially since they don't do the steam to essentially hook into the bottom half of the ear. When they work though, they're awesome for the price.
As far as the watch though, I haven't had really any of the issues you're experiencing (though I haven't tried the camera stuff). For me, the Watch 2 has been fast and responsive and I haven't had a single issue with daily use running errands, going to the gym, going on long walks, etc. Not sure if I'm lucky or you're unlucky (probably the former). I love how small it is for the gym, going on runs and walks, and other active endeavors. I do wish the bezels were smaller and it would be great if they made a larger model for people with larger wrists.
Pixel 8 Pro has been great for me, for the most part. Overheating from the 7 Pro does seem mostly fixed or at least very improved, phone feels fast for anything other than gaming, camera video seems much improved. The zoom is truly impressive, I took pictures at an NBA game and was able to zoom as if I were mere inches away from players and the quality was crisp. I sent them to my iPhone friends and they were blown away by the level of detail. The only issue I'm experiencing is occasional times where touch is clearly recognized by hardware since I can feel the haptics, but then nothing happens in the software - this happens most often when tapping the search bar at the bottom of the home screen. It's almost like it's intentional or something.
As far as ecosystem, Android is in a tough spot since they don't have a true desktop computing platform from Google with which to integrate. Trying to wedge Windows in the mix hasn't been great and to me, the desktop aspect is more important than a tablet being in the mix. I know there's Chrome OS but that's not great for real, intensive work.

There's always Dex and Ready For, but those don't come with android. They're specific to Samsung and Motorola phones. By the time you've bought a keyboard, mouse, and monitor that work with your phone, you might as well just get a regular computer to use with them instead...

  • @Zetpherious

One of my biggest issues with this phone is that if you are located outside the US you lose a huge amount of the "smart" part of the phone - they're US exclusive whether that's due to data processing laws that Google is frankly too lazy to deal with or because they aren't confident enough to release them elsewhere. As a UK Pixel owner it's always been frustrating to deal with and I think a big barrier for them to really show off how good it is globally.

I like that the Pixel watch is about normal case size. My biggest complaint with a lot of fitness oriented smart-watches is that they're obnoxiously large. Most people would be between 40mm and 42mm if they went to a jeweler and actually got fitted for a watch. The general rule is that the lugs should not be hanging off your wrist. That 41mm looks fine for your wrist, but I can see how the display size might be a tad small for precise touch input.

With the camera app on the watch you can press the menu icon and turn on a 3 second timer so you can get into position

    • @TheMrMobile
      @TheMrMobile  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I knew I should have put this into the script. The fact that the timer option exists doesn't excuse the fact that *by default,* the watch gives you a shutter cue that's delayed by several seconds.

The great thing about the Pixel 8 Pro is that you don't need to hook it up to a Pixel Watch 2. I got the watch, but like you said, it's too small for a man. I gave it to my wife who loves it. She has a Samsung Galaxy S23 Pro... I have a Samsung Tizen Watch from 2018 and it works well with the Pixel 8 Pro. In fact it works even better now than when I had a Samsung phone. The notifications are awesome. Making phone calls is great! Using my watch to take photos is fantastic. There are some annoying things on the Pixel 8 Pro. Those horrible option bubbles in the Notification bar. Why are they so BIG? The camera is annoying especially the selfie mode. No palm start automatically. I have to go into the settings to turn on the timer. WHY? It totally ruins the selfie spur of the moment photography. Everything else though, the AI features, everything Google is great! The battery life rocks. Great review Michael!

What is the widest phone in the market excluding the foldable.
I love small phones but my eyes are not helping to keep my iPhone 13 mini. I believe a wider phone would help me.

Yeah totally agree with what you are saying. I used to be a devout Google user but now the assistant is so frustrating, as in setting a timer (set timer 2 mins 30secs - ok 30 secs...) or playing music on my home group which always disappears off Google Home...

    Great video 😎
There's a solution to you capturing your nose on the watch, in the camera app on the watch there's an option to have a 3 or 10 second timer.
My gripe with the camera app is the focal lengths being on a slider rather than toggles like the phones app. 🤣
I would love to go all in Google or Sammy but much like you at the moment I prefer to mix and match. Soundcore are my go to buds 🔥

FINALLY been waiting for your review for forever 😭 I got all three devices (8 pro, buds pro and watch 2), and while I absolutely love them, there is definitely room for improvement. very much in the box of "the pros outweigh the cons", but I really want the Pixel ecosystem to truly rival Apple's, and this year they got about 85-90% of the way. I'd recommend these products to anyone, but they should definitely know about the bugs that u mentioned, as I've experienced them all myself

I love Pixel phones, I swear I can ignore the bugs because of the pixel features, they're on a whole new level. The buds and the watch though... it's a different story: until the tech is ready I'm going to buy them. I'm hopeful.

As a fan of Google products, the glitchiness is their biggest achilles heel. Seems like every problem I had with my pixel products could be described in the same way, "I went online and thousands of people have been complaining about it for a while."

Hey MrMobile! With the advent of (relatively) inexpensive HDR monitors, tvs and even cellphone screens, can you eventually upgrade your great videography with HDR content as well?
