- This episode is a whole barrel of fun as I dive into a barrel filled with mini bottles. This faux barrel of Canadian Club was released in the late 1990s and has four bottles inside it - a regular 6-year old, a "Reserve" 10-year old, a 100 proof bottle, and a Sherry Cask finished bottle. In order to tell their story I catch you up from where I left off the history of the brand in my earlier bottle about Canadian Club. It's got families who abandon their legacy, bootlegging businessmen, and more!

I will confess a certain ignorance of Canadian whisky and its appeal, relative to its Old World counterparts, mainly due to the legal tautology in Canadian law that Canadian whisky should have the character of Canadian whisky. How exactly does this tell you anything about how to make a Canadian whisky ?
Well, there is a bit more to it than that, even legally. But yeah, as a category, "Canadian Whisky" is even less useful at telling you what something will taste like than say, bourbon or rye (which encompass a pretty big range of expressions). Thanks to the way the category evolved through history, there's never been a push for strict definitions or uniformity. Today, that means the flavor profiles can be really variable, although in Grandma's collecting period all the producers were pretty much making the same style - lighter whiskeys that were smooth and easy to drink, at a time when consumers reported that they "didn't like the taste of alcohol" and vodka was on the rise!
