I live in Washington, and the Cask Strength Rye that they only offer at the distillery is one of my absolute favorite whiskeys. A great place to visit if you're ever in the area, and if you go in for a tasting they're always glad to give you something off the menu if you ask, and they always have some interesting offerings. Still, I always go home with a bottle of the Cask Rye 😋
Nice thing about Woodinville Whiskey is it is no longer considered craft for its core offerings and according to the owners, they should be in all 50 states by the end of 2024. However, they still are making some wild and awesome single barrel experiments that are distillery releases only.
Absolutely. I love visiting that distillery for a tasting. They're always happy to let you try the experimental stuff instead of the standard menu if show interest. Every so often I'll head out that way with the wifey and hit a winery for a bite, then head by the distillery afterwards, have a nice tasting of some interesting whiskey, and always go home with a bottle of the Cask Strength Rye. Makes for a great outing!
Watching these videos is completely different after seeing the vault. I always imagined a sprawling cavernous room, with aisles and aisles of whiskeys. But in person it's more like a very nice walk-in closet, with whiskey in it. It's like a Tardis, but backward. Also, I have a grievance! A grievance, I tell you! The class included a pour of anything in the vault. So I said "Where's all the good whiskeys?" And they basically said "Not in the vault." Day ruined! (Okay, that's a lie. It was delightful. And meeting Daniel was cool as hell.)
One piece of paper will have very high wind resistance relative to its weight, so that must be a factor in getting a feel for how to throw it, right? A heavier paper wad should be 100x easier to throw.
You guys have done it before but would’ve loved an A/B with Lot 40. The Dark Oak is especially good. Don’t know if that’s only available up here though 🇨🇦
When I started drinking in the early 70s, CC and Water was the "cool" drink to order at your local bar. It was either that or 7 and 7. 🙂 And I think that the Canadian Club is "Wry" whiskey.
Its funny because most of all the great Canadian whisky we keep here ourselves. We love when the rest of the world tastes the crap the big players release outside Canada to perpetuate the myth. Means the good good stays here for us.
@@DarkCloudWhisky Yes, Oh, I'm sure you have your gems (although you should share). We can find good Canadian whisky, all over in the Midwest anyway, but it's usually jacked up in price. The "regular retainers" usually carry the basic stuff. (btw, I love Canadian Whisky and coke :) Cheers !!
@DarkCloudWhisky Right on, brother! But tonight, ironically, I'm drinking some Irish whiskey, LOL, you can't make that stuff up! Neither Canadian nor American, but Thicker Liquor approved. Haha.
If you want a better version of Canadian Club, go for the 12 year old. The flavor is richer and more complex than the basic and at about $20 it definitely punches above it's weight class.
It's the same old rye/corn caramel flavor, but at least it's a lot cleaner. 40 Creek double barrel is similar, but also had a bit of apple in the finish which I assume is from the barley
@@jarvy251 Amazing what a few extra years in the barrel can do! I've always gotten a distinct malty note from the 12. According to what I've read they use corn, rye, rye malt and barley malt in mashbill, each distilled separately then blended in the barrel. Apparently they use recharred ex-bourbon barrels. Being a Beam/Suntory product they're probably Jim Beam or Makers Mark barrels.
when are you going to set up a camera for the waste paper basket shots, lol? I love a good rye, and malted rye smoked in eucalypt smoke (Australian stringy bark to be exact) accentuates that not eucalypt note. Archie Rose smoked malted rye is still my number 1. And yes I am having one now. ;)
When the Ford went to Halifax, I tried to experiment with Canadian whiskies. I just can't. It's so medicinal. They have the Woodinville at the local Navy Exchange, so at least I'll be able to try it for real... but given your review on Jack Daniels Rye, I may just get that instead.
Can you ever ferment different grains separately and then combine the wort for the distillation? Or can you do ferment separately, do separate stripping runs and then combine for the spirit run? Or are these differences negligible?
Yes! Love this. All of those things would change the final spirit. We did in with one of the products at Crowded Barrel once because the grains were so varied the fermentations were all over the map when mixed together. So we fermented all the grains separately, the combined the wort for still runs. Would could have distilled separately as well. that's a lot like what Canada does at some distilleries. All of those things would change the final product.
With Canadian whiskey having that metallic vanilla note does it always come from the exact same process and is it something that could be easily avoided?
I think it's mostly the note you find in column still and used bourbon barrels. It's the same note in Irish and Scottish grain whisky. But in Canada, it seems to dominate even more for some reason - Daniel
Not surprising that a large producer of Canadian whiskey is pumping out something pretty unexceptional on their budget line likely they're only criteria was to make it easily palatable
Rex, have you been mooching Daniel's hair power over the years? Not that I want to see another "hair for hobbits" or "skullet" episode, but I feel like you'd both be better off if you averaged out a bit. Release but a smidgen of your power
that's a $20 bottle of C&C rye. how much does the woodinville sell for? over $40, enough said. you could of compared it to lot 40 but then you couldn't make it about sh!tting on canada.
As a Canadian, I loathe our whiskey scene. Our big brands just put out well grabs. Even the top shelf limited releases are genuinely iffy to boring. It is doubly galling because our beer scene is MASSIVE. I'm sorry guys. You know it's bad when I come here for Canadian whiskeys to try.
There's a load of craft single malts that are very good, but good luck getting them! If you can get a bottle of Magnotta 271 10 year, you won't be disappointed.
No, the stuff in Canada still sucks. Don’t play that game. I spend a LOT of time in Canada and drink “their” stuff. Much of what they dump in America is almost criminally bad (the very low priced crap) but they simply make bad whiskey. Sorry. It’s bad. Across the board. Some rare exceptions, that prove the rule, are all attempts to mimic American bourbons and (recently) ryes. Of course, whiskey is about taste and tastes vary. Canadian whiskey is proof that tastes vary A LOT. As in a whole country decided to put up with really, really, really bad stuff just to drink alcohol. Russia’s worse, if it’s any consolation… 😂

Craft doesn’t refer to market size but rather “do we cut corners to cater to dumb consumers instead of sticking to our guns”
I often get a wintergreen/spearmint "hybrid" note from rye. Even got a bacon note before from a unique rye and not in a bad way at all.
Haven't even watched the episode yet...love woodenville...it is the one that turned me around toward rye

That CC 100% Rye bottle looks weird, it's different up in Canada. Is it the same stuff?? Pretty good for the price imo, but nothing special.
