It's interesting how the Alliance changed during Classic. With Lordaeron destroyed, the old Alliance pretty much split into Garithos' army that was used and wiped out by the Forsaken, and the remnants of the Silver Hand lead by Alexandros Mograine. After Mograine's death, the order split into the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn. Meanwhile, Stormwind becomes the head of the new Alliance and rallies together the dwarves, the gnomes and even the night elves, after the Horde began chopping down Ashenvale. The Alliance was still weak at the time, with Stormwind under political pressure, Ironforge having trouble with the Dark Irons, Gnomeregan lost to radiation and the Darnassus dealing with Old God corruption. It was thanks to leaders like Bolvar and Jaina that the Alliance survived. The Alliance eventually regained its full strength with the return of Varian Wrynn and the fall of the Lich King.
All this made me realise how silly the Warcraft timeline actually is. In the past 50 or so years (period from WC1 to BFA) there have been more near world ending catastrophies than in the 9000 years of Azeroth history before that combined. After the War of the Ancients there have been a few conflicts, mostly lesser ones. But in recent Azeroth History there has been: 2 Orcish invasions, a zombie plague, a demonic invasion that killed the world tree, Ragnaros trying to kill everyone, Hakkar the Soulflayer, C'Thun being released, Kil'Jaeden being summoned at the Sunwell, Scourge invasions, Malygos going mad, Yogg Saron getting freed, Algalon the Observer nearly exterminatusing the entire planet, The Cataclysm and the Hour of Twilight stuff, Ragnaros returning, Garrosh being corrupted by Old Gods and turning genocidal, Iron Horde invasion, ANOTHER Legion invasion, the Emerald Nightmare and death of a dragon aspect, the planet being stabbed by a giant sword, and now we have another Warchief with a Old Gods artifact and the return of N'Zoth. And I probably am forgetting quite a few.
Verdius the real story here is that you only just realised that. Imo we are long overdue for a WoW 2 or WC4 but that would be investments and risks that you are not gonna get the corporate side of activision blizzard to agree to. In some ways it’s fair enough, in others, well at least we get classic now and can safely abandon BFA.
Well thing is there is a lot of things that we have no infos about fro the 10k betwin war of anvients and war1. For exemple we have infos about the blood plague nearly wiping out the zandalari, or the council of tribes wars etc... but we have no infos about this in chronnicles meaning there is lot of others things missing
All of those threats are ultimately due to one of two root causes: Sargerus and the Burning Legion or The Old Gods. In fact given that Sargerus' goal was to build a unified force to fight the Void and The Old Gods seem to be servants on the void - one could argue that there is only one threat with the other events merely being battles in a war that is too big for the people of the Warcraft Universe to perceive.
@@TheMichael769 Very true! Also, Sargeras is ultimately the result of the Old Gods aswell. Since Azeroth is the most powerful titan soul every, they're pretty eager to get her on thier side.

My favorite part of all of vanilla was the onyxia quest chain and watching Bolvar go Beast mode and Slaughter all thoes Disguised Black dragons in stormwind keep, he was such an underrated character at the time
This is a nice summary. I recently read the three volumes of Warcraft Chronicle. It is so good. The stuff for vanillia WOW would be in volume three. The other books go deeper in ancient times. Reading all three books gives me a good idea of what is going on. There are basically three waves of Burning Crusade invasions into Azeroth. The Burning Crusade is a group of Demons, who are the bad guys. The biggest leader is Sargaras. This guy really reminds me of Satan. He started out as a Titan. Titans are the godlike people that bring order and creation to the worlds. In the begining of history, Sargaras betrayed his titan brethren and joined the demons. He formed a Burning Legion. It is like how Satan changed from an angel of God to being the leader of the demons and the big bad of the Bible. In volume one, the demons try to invade Azeroth on their own. It didn't work because the Night Elves and their woodland allies fought back. It also broke Azeroth from one huge landmass into multiple continents. It is like plate tectonics. In volume two, the demons try currupting the orcs of outland. The orcs can invade Azeroth first, and weaken the defenders. This group was called the Horde. Then the demons would invade. That didn't work. The Allience fought back. Part of the problem is that the orcs succumbed to infighting. In volume three, the demons use the zombies to aid in thier invasion. Zombies are mindless and loyal, and so wont succumb to infighting. They form a group called the Scourge. Both the zombies and the demons try out thier invasion. This doesn't work. Part of it is due to the Allience fighting back again. Another is that former minions gain independence and fight back. The orcs gain independence, and form a new Horde. Later on, some of the zombies gain independence and join the orcs. The new Horde and the Allience are enemies of each other. Yet both fight back against the demons and their zombies. It is in this war that world of Warcraft occurs. I would like to do a basic breakdown of geography. This is so one can have a general idea of what is going on in different places. There are two continents, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalmidor. Then each of them can be roughly subdivided to three parts. There is north, middle and south. I find that the northern areas have lore about the main conflicts. Northern Eastern Kingdoms has the homeland of the Forsaken (independent zombies), the blood elves and the worgen (werewolves). It used to be the home of most human nations. Then this became the main place where the zombies invaded. Human succumbed to the invasion and became more zombies. Some of them however turned to werewolves or remained human. Northern Kalmidor has the homeland of the night elves and the drenei (aliens). This became the main place where the demons invaded. Then there is the middle of the continents. There are some more things going on. Middle Eastern Kingdoms have the dwarves and gnomes. They are just doing their own thing. The major event is that some dwarves summoned a fire elemental. It made certain places volcanic. This area not only has bad dwarves, but it also has orcs and dragons. Middle Kalmidor has some homelands. It is the home of the orcs, tauren and trolls. There is also a place of humans, from the northern part of Eastern Kingdoms. Then the southern parts of the continents have things that go back further in time. The southern Eastern Kingdoms is the last mighty human homeland. If one creates a new human, they start out here. This place has the portal where the first Horde came in. This is the second of the three main invasions. The southern Kalmidor is the most remote area in Vanilla. It is far away from any starting area. It also has bizzare lore. This is the only place in the vanilla zones that houses an old god. The old gods are tenticle monsters. They look like something out of Lovecraft. Maybe that is a case of Lovecraft and Warcraft going together. Anyway the tenticle monster has its own bug people. They are an anchient threat to Azaroth. Bug people come in different kind with different names. The ones in southern Kalmidor that stand out are the Slithids. This anchient threat brings out something interesting interesting about the Demons. The demons are not pure evil, even though they may seem that way. There is something good to them. The demons are good at fighting against the tentacle monsters. The origional motivation of Sargeras ( Warcraft Satan) was to get rid of the tenticle monsters. He was willing to destroy worlds if it meant that the world was safe from the curruption of the tenticle monsters. I wonder if this was the grand finale of Vanilla. The raid with the bugs and tenticle monster was a huge event. There were so many people that it shut down servers. There is a whole holiday about it later. I didn't play until the first expansion so I don't know for sure. That is Warcraft lore in a nutshell. I hope this helps.
I had no idea Moira was so involved behind the scenes of Vanilla, that just makes her all the cooler. Also another questline worth looking into is the Battle of Darrowshire questline.
sorry but it is so hard for me to understand this guys accent. It almost sounds like a ai voice that skips forward too fast at times lol. Tabatttabbataabbaaaptaaaba
I've watched you since you explained The Light and really got into the lore videos (from what I see on your channel) and I love it all! Thanks for the videos and letting us appreciate the story that is the tales of World of Warcraft!
A few questlines I would add to your list that are definitely worth checking out. The Battle of Darrowshire The Scythe of Elune It's a Secret for Everybody The whole Ras Frostwhisper questline starting with Doctor Krastinov the Butcher outside Scholomance. The Missing Diplomat Onyxia Attunement chains (both factions)
I dont think its included in this video (i didnt watch it all lol) but deathwing actually has a really damn cool story that blizz decided to leave out of the game. In beta i think it was, instead of katrana prestor/onyxia they had a char named daval prestor in her place. He did a whole bunch of super subtle but very important things (look up his wiki page its seriously awesome!). Basically, through his manipulation, he convinced lordaeron to go to war with the king of alterac, then further convinced people to elect him as king of alterac (he still is to this day lol). He also was promised arthas's sisters hand in marriage, but that obviously fell through because of the whole plague thing.
The Howling Vale (Alliance quest chain many miss that starts in Ashenvale and takes you travelling to learn the fate of a priestess and about the nature of the worgen.) The Missing Diplomat (Alliance quest chain that is a sequel to The defias brotherhood.) Dragonkin Menace (Alliance quest chain that is a sequel to The Missing Diplomat.) To Winterspring! (Alliance quest chain that gives you a trinket that kills you when you equip it.) It's a secret to everybody (Zelda quest chain) Sweet Amber (Hidden level 40 alliance quest chain in westfall) Little Pamela (Remember Darrowshire) Forces of Jaedenar (This is ofc a joke, only a masochist would go down into the shadow hold not once, not twice, but 5 times.)
Man, so many things newer players take for granted that they will maybe miss in classic. Tbh, after this video I am more looking forward to it than I was before.
Not sure if I have super listening powers or everyone else just sucks at it. I can understand him perfectly fine. English is my first language. Then if I couldn't understand him due to how fast he speaks, my brain would tell me to slow the videos speed down a little in the videos options. Do that much for yourselves cause this is the best lore content on YT by far.
fun fact in silverpine forest on retail you can do the quest sylvanas explains how she hates artha's so much she will do anything to kill him how he took her life from her sister
I played classic, but man, I never knew the lore behind the dungeons and I knew very little about Alliance lore. Can't wait to revisit it all again, and try out raiding this time!
Also, an exiled Tirion Fordring awaits champions to cross his path in Eastern Plaguelands so he can have them convince his son to leave the Scarlet Crusade.
HBO / Netflix / Amazon need to pick this stuff up… Arthas & Sylvanas storylines (with Frostmourne vs. Ashbringer, Uther, Jaina, Muradin, Ner'zhul and Naxxramas)… Thrall & Varian storylines… (maybe start here, expanding from the movie, with Rexxar, Rehgar, Saurfang, Fordring, Onyxia, Defias Brotherhood, SI:7) Secretly nerding out for something like this to come around...
I wish classic told its lore better, can play through the game multiple times and not know most of this, one good thing retail developed was more individual and solo feeling lore quests where you have cut scenes etc especially for you that immerse you in the story more than a wall of quest text Also isn't one of the quests for staghelm the morrow grain which people spam for rep for the nelf mount, I heard he was using the morrow grain to help keep malfurion tramped in the dream
I remember seeing Shadowglen for the first time, and having my breath taken away. I came from EverQuest, and the graphics were so elevated in comparison at the time lol.
EQ2 had amazing graphics back then. Maybe too amazing since you needed hardware that didn't exist yet to max them out lol. Still, even at lower settings, it was pretty impressive. I'll never forget how mind blowing the boat ride to the isle of refuge was.

@@Booksn0b oh I love your videos, I subscribed. I'm pretty sure I had a character on Maj'dul. My mains used to be on Unrest, now Halls of Fate after the merger, all of them are from Freeport. I´m kinda disappointed you didnt make the Infinity War reference at 11:30 by saying the Thanos line "A small price to pay for salvation", i was like OMG hes gonna say it! But still, great vid as always :-)
I love your content nobbel, as always accurate and well written, but I think I need to correct you here: on 9:20, I'm not certain if you are implying that the summoning of archimonde made arthas lose power, but that was not what happened. What happened was that illidan was trying to kill the LK, with a spell that would torn Northrend apart, while on process of the ritual, his brother sensed this rupture of the earth and stopped him in time. But this spell was not a complete failure, it breached the LK's frozen throne a bit, enough to make him bleed, thus making Arthas lose his power bit by bit and losing control over his minions, sylvanas included.
Afaik, they're not. They're gunna make a third, neutral faction that will be led by Thrall. Unconfirmed of course, all speculation at this point. I think the alternative would be that they'll just regurgitate MoP, have him come back to take down Sylvanas, appoint Saurfang and then he'll just bugger off again.
I’m going human for the extra mana gen with spirit. gnome might be better but I’d like the mana early on.(I’m doing alliance cause my guild mates will be)
Awesome video, love the outline of the timeline. But as a native english speaker I found it a bit difficult to follow without subtitles. For example, at 14:20 you make a transition and I get completely lost
I kinda want the old style of raids where you needed resistance gear to begin progression. I have such fond memories of MC BWL aq40 and naxx. Today's raids are great like I'm not knocking them I just think they miss the flavor of resistance gear.
@@ConnorNotyerbidness I think it was just such an ambitious project that they had to cut corners, so they probably just had the dev team record some lines.
Even in Warcraft 3 most of the voice acting was stale and kind of hushed, and there wasn't really a standard to meet for MMOs yet - at the time voice acting wasn't even a thing in most of them.
I have been really enjoying your videos and I noticed that some of the videos were a little... different than what it is now. Have you considered to doing a remastered version of videos from Classic-Cataclysm, doing a similar fashion as you did with the videos with Mists - Battle for Azeroth.
opening of dark portal was year 0, battle of mount hiyal year 21. 4 years after that would be year 25 for classic. 1 year per expansion makes 7 extra years so year 32 ish.
@@Nobbel87 Didn't a couple expansions last 2 years in-universe? I seem to remember WotLK being 2 years, and there was a bit of a time jump between ICC/RS and Cata
@@Dessarius From the ultimate visual guide timeline it seems like WotlK took 1 year. Between cata and pandaria there's a 2 year gap! So 33 ISH. Timeline isn't that consistent sadly.
I was kinda hoping for a tongue in cheek lore video of how Vanilla WoW finally got to the stage it;s at now, all done in a legit law sounding spin, of a changing world, of heroes still seeking out the game where they could even through shady means, the tale of Nostalrius, how A villain who uttered those damning works in front of so many, only to find redemption in being the overseer of Vanilla's return. I dunno, may feel like an early April fools joke of an idea, but i feel the classic WoW return has a story to be hold.
Imagine playing starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo when they release and continue playing them as you grow up but you never could WoW because you aren’t worth $15 a month to your parents. Garrosh's story literally was the precendent for WoD and they couldn't even be bothered to put his trial and escpae in the game. They're just so lazy. That said, it's different with Classic since they were making a huge world from scratch.
that original cinematic was what totally captivated me into wow. i was hooked. my first chtr was a dwarf hunter with a bear. that poor guy is called bronzebeard by mimiron so many times, even currently.

Little Pamela (Remember Darrowshire)
Forces of Jaedenar (This is ofc a joke, only a masochist would go down into the shadow hold not once, not twice, but 5 times.)
Appreciate the subtitles!
As a person who played WC3 but not classic Wow this video is great, i was so confused when i started WoW and there were 3 warchiefs
Kill me Pete
You need to add the quest for Darrowshire. It got a song for a reason. :)
Thanks for the reminder. I've played Warcraft since Orcs & Humans. I love the game, loved the lore. I am seriously considering WoW Classic.
Man, so many things newer players take for granted that they will maybe miss in classic. Tbh, after this video I am more looking forward to it than I was before.
Absolutely love all your stories! Your voice and inflection make it all the better!
This video was perfect. Thanks.
Also how is Mekkatorque still king. He's the reason 80% of the gnomes were killed
i love how you made a point of mentioning resistance gear cause not many new players really understand just how important that stuff was in classic
12:08 Run you free spirit! You have returned home!
I love you Nobbel, thank you for the greatest lore videos
"talking about them would take all day long" Hey Nobbel, I don't mind ;)
came here from the allcraft chat. to be fair, I new viewer to your guys' circle
fun fact in silverpine forest on retail you can do the quest sylvanas explains how she hates artha's so much she will do anything to kill him how he took her life from her sister
I played classic, but man, I never knew the lore behind the dungeons and I knew very little about Alliance lore. Can't wait to revisit it all again, and try out raiding this time!
Just in time for the daily wind down before bed.
pretty much all the quests on the plaguelands are awesome, hard, and heart breaking as you can see the true horrors of the scourge
Id love videos for every expansion! Good summary, more like: amazing
Also, an exiled Tirion Fordring awaits champions to cross his path in Eastern Plaguelands so he can have them convince his son to leave the Scarlet Crusade.
Love watching lore vids before I play ^_^
Also, Warcraft 3 reforged will be out sometime this year to play the original campaign, if the old game is a little too dated for somebody's tastes
O man...this comment .....srry WC3
@@rondiggitydawg2010 yee
HBO / Netflix / Amazon need to pick this stuff up… Arthas & Sylvanas storylines (with Frostmourne vs. Ashbringer, Uther, Jaina, Muradin, Ner'zhul and Naxxramas)… Thrall & Varian storylines… (maybe start here, expanding from the movie, with Rexxar, Rehgar, Saurfang, Fordring, Onyxia, Defias Brotherhood, SI:7) Secretly nerding out for something like this to come around...
Yeah a woke retcon live action show sounds great
The entire Silverpine forest quest area. Best area I game to this day
Best intro for a video game. Ever.
I love the way this guy builds a sentence. Every Sentence, begins low, then staRTS TO GROW, UNTIL HE'S BUILT UP AND READY TO BLOW!!!!!.
I wish classic told its lore better, can play through the game multiple times and not know most of this, one good thing retail developed was more individual and solo feeling lore quests where you have cut scenes etc especially for you that immerse you in the story more than a wall of quest text
Also isn't one of the quests for staghelm the morrow grain which people spam for rep for the nelf mount, I heard he was using the morrow grain to help keep malfurion tramped in the dream
@@Ekinoxe EQ2 is still one of my favorite games to this day
@@Booksn0b Yeah same for me. I played regularly for well over 10 years. Now I still log in sporadically but everyone I knew is gone and I'm 2 expansions behind progress wise so it's a bit discouraging lol.
@@Ekinoxe Plane of Magic (Planes of Prophecy) is gorgeous, I did a tour video of the zone, and the music on my channel. I've been playing since release on, and off. My mains are Wispie (evil), and Haeily (good) on Maj'Dul for whenever you come back. :)
@@Booksn0b oh I love your videos, I subscribed. I'm pretty sure I had a character on Maj'dul. My mains used to be on Unrest, now Halls of Fate after the merger, all of them are from Freeport. Nhemesis (warlock), Kayhen (SK) and Ekinoxe (Necro). I do have a bunch of characters level 95 and over but those are the ones I played the most. My lock has been my main since launch. Admittedly I'm not too keen on his name anymore but nostalgia is stopping me from renaming him haha. Anyway, sorry for boring you with all the details lol. I'll definitely stop by your server and say hi next time I get online, which should be sometime this week.
I´m kinda disappointed you didnt make the Infinity War reference at 11:30 by saying the Thanos line "A small price to pay for salvation", i was like OMG hes gonna say it! But still, great vid as always :-)
I need more Videos Nobbel!!
I love your content nobbel, as always accurate and well written, but I think I need to correct you here:
on 9:20, I'm not certain if you are implying that the summoning of archimonde made arthas lose power, but that was not what happened. What happened was that illidan was trying to kill the LK, with a spell that would torn Northrend apart, while on process of the ritual, his brother sensed this rupture of the earth and stopped him in time. But this spell was not a complete failure, it breached the LK's frozen throne a bit, enough to make him bleed, thus making Arthas lose his power bit by bit and losing control over his minions, sylvanas included.
please more classic lore!!
Love ur vids even tho haven’t played wow in Ages
If they make thrall warchief again I'm re subbing
I'll resub when classic servers release.
Playing a mage for soon to be classic release. My main goal is to get atiesh. Oh boy the grinds coming boys.
I’m going human for the extra mana gen with spirit. gnome might be better but I’d like the mana early on.(I’m doing alliance cause my guild mates will be)
I missed the times when night elves were ancient wise and strong beings. Respectable, now theyre human's pets
They finally started to go abck to their roots with Tyrande finally turning into a butcher again:D
Night Elves have not been "ancient wise and strong beings. Respectable..." since The Great Sundering...
Little did we know a Warlock out of all classes, got the corrupted ashbringer
As always .. impressive work !
Awesome video so excited for classic!
"Together. They're going to do the impossible. Stack up on nature resistance gear-"
Thanks for this!
Great watch, enjoyed it!
5:05 Haha how ironic that the gullible deceived heroes would eventually help to summon the Blood God Hakkar.
17:50 even Speedwagon was suprised
Awesome video, love the outline of the timeline. But as a native english speaker I found it a bit difficult to follow without subtitles.
For example, at 14:20 you make a transition and I get completely lost
You're awesome Nobbel. Keep up the great work.
I still look forward to what blizzard is going to do with gnomeregan, when Will it be cleansed and gnomes get their capital back.
Cataclysm 2 - Wrathions try
If you havent done the Shaman water totem quest, have you really experienced WOW vanilla
I kinda want the old style of raids where you needed resistance gear to begin progression. I have such fond memories of MC BWL aq40 and naxx. Today's raids are great like I'm not knocking them I just think they miss the flavor of resistance gear.
18:35 god Gelbins original voice sounds like a fan dub
ALL voices in vanilla sounded terrible. I still remember the unenthusiastic "hello there" from human males. XD
@@cvanims well unless they were voiced by metzen. Honestly it really does explain why they had him voice EVERYONE
Ah nostalgia.
In terms of lore chronology how many years has it been since classic all the way to now?
My guess would be 8-10 years.
15?
opening of dark portal was year 0, battle of mount hiyal year 21. 4 years after that would be year 25 for classic.
Are you going to talk about the 3 quests you said to check out next?
You should totally do the prophecies of mosh'aru!
I’m so sad I never got to experience classic WoW with everyone. Sigh after many years of neglecting WoW because i was a whole decade late, here I finally am. Thank you for this recap and classic lore so i know what i am getting myself into coming back to Azeroth.
Look up Everlook, it’s a private WoW server dedicated to the classic experience , we’re all levelling up right now. I’m a level 48 rogue hitting maraudon right now.
would be cool if they put Varian's story in game like a massive quest line.
Garrosh's story literally was the precendent for WoD and they couldn't even be bothered to put his trial and escpae in the game. They're just so lazy.
That said, it's different with Classic since they were making a huge world from scratch.
I love the narrative cadence and rolled R's
I never thought I’d be first on a video, but I’m glad it was Nobbel! Great work man; keep it up!
that original cinematic was what totally captivated me into wow. i was hooked. my first chtr was a dwarf hunter with a bear. that poor guy is called bronzebeard by mimiron so many times, even currently.
Thank you, a very important video since storytelling was almost non existent back in vanilla. There were no scenarios or cinematics that told what was going on story wise. 👌
Actually, no, there was a lot of storytelling in Vanilla, but it happened in the quest texts, not in 10-hour-long melodramatic cutscenes ;)
Just a few more hours!!!!!
Maybe you get a chance to check out and talk about the Book of Ur, a rare drop in felwood, that detailed how to summon worgen into Azeroth.
Klony
Book of Ur is a quest in SFK, you pick up the quest in Undercity. Would love to hear him talk about it!
@@Mason_____ Is that so? A friend of mine talked about how he dropped it in Felwood... or was it ABOUT the War of the Satyr in Felwood? Maybe I got that confused. I never actually got to play Classic but I'm definitely rolling an undead rogue after I've done the race to Naxxramas. :D
Klony nah you can check on wowdb that book of ur is a low level 20 quest in shadowfang keep. The Felwood Book to go kill satrys is another cool quest that you do in early 50s
who hired this voice..
Not even the person who made the subtitles can understand what Nobbel says sometimes
Please do this story by expansion for every expansion to BFA. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love his voice
Cow: Mooo...
Cat: Meow.
Idiot: FIRST!!!!
That nostalgic mambo jambo
Turn on Captions. Set speed to 0.75. Profit.
3 months... I can’t wait
More Classic stuff please.
