    Naoto, I know its an older video, but I have used the same rust remover spray for decontaminating auto paint and wheels on my bonsai tools and it worked great. That along the Sabitoru erasers are my to-go items now.

    Next time try soaking in evapo-rust, it’s almost like magic. Still might have needed to thin the blade afterwards if there was any pitting on the actual apex (or where you want the apex to be) but most likely would not have to thin after using evapo-rust for anything other than aesthetic reasons

      Evaporust would at least require less scrubbing, make any remaining surface oxidation easier to remove.

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe the buffing wheel helped with the rust in the crevices! He also went in with the edge of a square rust eraser for precision.

  • @ScaleTune
    @ScaleTune 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Incredible! Question: could you sandblast the knife with glass beads to remove the rust and then grind it to polish? Or would that hurt the material?

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of knives we carry are sandblasted! That said, I'm not sure what they blast it with, but it's worth a try!

    I thinned two of my knives and I am having trouble getting my kasumi finish back. If I were to send it in, does it go to Calgary to Naoto’s team or it goes to one of nearby stores?

    Such a righteous job!
    From a business standpoint however, was it worth the labor cost of the restoration? If it’s an expensive knife, I would suppose so.

    Can you give more details as to what happened?
    Also would you be able to do a video showing the difference between rust and patina. I've been really struggling to tell, especially from onion patinas as they are naturally an orange or brown colour.

    • @KnifewearKnives
      @KnifewearKnives  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was lost in the mail and looks like it was submerged in water- might've gotten tossed in a snowbank for the winter. It came back soggy this spring but we were able to revive it! And definitely, I can put that in the queue for ya! I find my onion patinas tend to be a warm grey, if it's too brown it's inching into that rust territory.

    • @jiahaotan696
      @jiahaotan696 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scratch it with your fingernail. If it's smooth, it's patina; if it feels rough, high chance of it being rust..
      TBH I get really lazy and if one or two spots feel a little rough but I can't confirm, life goes on as usual with wiping and keeping the knife dry.

  • @tc8893
    @tc8893 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Beautiful work but what an intensive method. You will need to throw away that buffing wheel as you just contaminated it with rust. The next knife you try to buff will be scratched by the rust and also be impregnated with micro particles of rust that will make that knife rust when it shouldn't. The way to quickly get through this is first use a brass wire wheel to knock off all the rust then a non woven abrasive wheel or belt to resurface the knife, it would take 5 minutes or so. Btw I own a knife sharpening company and have done a few hundred similar projects

    Beautiful restoration! As I am a scientist, I suggest the following scientific experiment to determine, if this knife is shippable via postal service or has some inherent properties to prevent that with repeated outcome from the last time. Send the knife to a very trustworthy person (me) who will document the state on possible arrival in great details. PM me for my address :D
