Chris, I discovered Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss, and John Hartford on the same day. The day I watched the DVD of Down From The Mountain, the concert for the film Oh Brother Where Art Thou. That day turned this old Deadhead's gaze in a whole new direction. It has been a great ride. There is so much music in my life that I can trace to that moment. I thought that is where I first saw you too, but it seems that it was "Another Day Another Time," the music from Inside Llewyn Davis. That is the one where I found You, Rhiannon Giddens, Marcus Mumford, and Lake Street Dive for the first time. Another big day of discovery.
Of course one of the best (though very short lived) bluegrass bands ever was Old and In the Way which featured Jerry Garcia on banjo, Vassar Clements on fiddle, David Grisman on mandolin, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals and John Kahn on base. The first modern bluegrass super group. I consider American Beauty by the Dead a first rate bluegrass album (and my personal favorite).
I loved O Brother but oddly didn't discover those musicians at the time. I was a Nickel Creek fan way back then and then they sort of disappeared for a decade. Feeling nostalgic one day on youtube I looked Nickel Creek up and it was around when Destination came out and then the TH-cam algorithm directed me to Crossing Muddy Waters... that was the day I discovered Sarah, Aoife, Crooked Still, John Hiatt... and frankly I fell in love with music again after a decade of just treading water. As a bonus I soon rediscovered Utah Phillips due to the same trio. I later rediscovered Gillian hearing Chris wax poetic about her. Love all those others you mentioned as well, although I'm not familiar with John Hartford so you just gave me something to look up!
I was in college in Madison, Wi when Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball came out in 1995. I was listening to a lot of Christian Music at the time and the stuff that was coming out of Christian Music Industry had gotten so bad that I started looking for inspiration outside of that industry. Thank God for Emmylou Harris and T-Bone Burnett for showcasing and introducing artists like Gillian/David, Patty Griffin, Julie/Buddy Miller, Innocence Mission. I cannot imagine my 20s without that music.

My first Gillian Welch song was Look at Miss Ohio. Truly some fantastic music
My mom sent me this.
Im in tears.
Her fluttering high notes are magical, great take on an amazing song.
These are the high-water marks of this show. Touching.
So moved. 💗
Ty for being my mom.
So good!
Becca Stevens covered from Welch to Molina, she made the grade, you surely didn't miss the other excellent friends of the show...
I'm confused. This doesn't look like Gillian. So is this Becca Stevens? Gillian doesn't wear make-up. Thanks 😉
Great song and great musicians. I'm surprised by how long it took Chris to phrase with Becca
I don't think it's possible to do a bad version of this beautiful tune.
(Although my favorites were Aoife O'Donovan covering Carly Simon and Gaby Moreno covering Donna Summer)
Did she perform with Jacob Collier in NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert?
She did indeed.
What's that instrument he's playing? Is that some kind of Large Mandolin?
Classic AND Contemporary...
this and that, what I have for what you have or Quid Pro Quo....
Peach is the new Orange! buwahahhaha
:”)
Is Chris Thile playing a GUITAR?!
What a great cover!
Also, Chris looks… wrong… with such a large instrument.
LOVE GILLIAN. CHRIS FING BUGS ME.
