From the very first time we heard them which was almost 20 years ago now, there hasn't been a week that we've not played their songs. We loved seeing them Live. They never disappoint. Top talents!
I am just starting to learn to play their stuff. I'm a 5 finger picker and it takes time, @ "73 and a third/rpm, years of age. Sweet harmony with a growling voice works well here too.
Every time I revisit the best live performance videos I always find myself here. There are live performances as good as this, but I'm not sure there are live performances better than this.
One of the most beautiful songs written in the last 100 years. Every time it comes up in my headphones I have to stop and listen to it several times in a row.
Of all the artists I've listened to over the past forty years, these two have turned out some of the most spellbinding tunes. And they've done it more than a few times. Their work is, IMHO, nestled perfectly within the Americana they so obviously have studied and love. Dave's dissonant jags remind me of NY on electric and Willie's playing when he goes off the rails.
Tears streamed down my face when I finally got to see/hear they play this live last year here in Lexington, Ky. This guitar solo is as good as guitar gets. Rawlings is transcendent live.
So hauntingly beautiful, it’s like thousands of years of human collective consciousness went into this song because the perfect dissonances create such an emotional reaction that the words are superfluous, ultimately. One hears the chords and immediately understands that the song is about suffering and not wanting to anymore, ever again.
That was nicely written. Lyrically, I think some of the words harken to both great moments and some of their worst, like being called a fake or an imitator just because she chose to play music she was not raised around. I suspect that was painful for her for a while, but she has continued doing what she loves and cares for and millions have enjoyed it. I think she's the bee's knees and David Rawlings is too.
Probably my favourite version of this song. I was very fortunate to be able to see them twice, once in 2010 as Dave Rawlings Machine and once a year later, just the two of them.
I was drawn to Gillian Welch (and Dave Rawlings who came along too) by comments made by Sarah Jarosz name-checking her on a Transatlantic Sessions gig. Thanks, Sarah for your great music, and for introducing me to these two.
I gave up seeing George Thorogood at Jazzfest back in 2007 so that I could listen to Gillian and David perform. It was one of my best decisions ever but my brother and friends didn't see it that way. haha
Possibly their best TH-cam performance - the venue and the closeness and attentiveness of the audience seems to have had a remarkable impact on the intensity of this amazing song's performance. Dave's solo is a mind blower and Gillian's singing and zen-like rhythm playing is absolutely breathtaking.
"Zen-like". Nice. It shows that perfection is better attained by simplicity than complexity, not to mention the 'beefy' Gibson sound completing the sonic spectrum with David's Epiphone.
I agree. I have seen these guys live 4-5 times and watched dozens of their videos on TH-cam and I think this BBC 4 production is them at their best as a duo. They seem to have taken it seriously, the lighting is great and of course - it's BBC - the recording and the sound are perfect. Their performance of Jacob Meyer at this show is intense and almost breathtaking.

the most impressive part of this phenomenal performance is Dave's originality on each solo between verses and how he builds them dynamically. Each one is unique, clever, and spectacularly expressive. So very, very hard to pull off. True mastery of the instrument.
