How To operate the OPEN & CLOSE Convenience feature on a MERCEDES BENZ C Class

- Hi, this 'How To' video shows you how to operate the convenience feature on a 2012 Mercedes Benz C180 (w204). The convenience feature allows you to open and close all the windows and sunroof via the key without being in the vehicle. This is really useful on a hot day to air the car before getting into it. Although this video shows a Mercedes this feature is common on a lot of makes & models in the last 15 years so give it a go to see if it works. On some cars you can insert your key in the door lock and turn it clockwise, release, then turn it clockwise again and hold. Turning the key counter clockwise will usually raise the windows back up.

Ah hah! Great tip about being close to the car when using the remote, I had been wondering why my fob only seemed to work sometimes on my CLS. Works every time now. Cheers my (new)mate Vince. Subscribed!
You have to very close to the drivers door handle then press and hold the open button on the key fob,all of the windows will start to open. Release the button when the windows are open enough to vent the car then lock the car. If you want to raise the windows press and hold the lock button on the fob. Unfortunately this Function does not work at any distance from the car you must hold the fob close to the driver door handle. Hope this works for you. I find it handy on hot days.

I knew the Merc could open the windows with the long key press but I thought it was temperamental as it couldn’t when I tried at a distance. Thanks to your video I know now it has to be very near to activate it. 👍🏻

Cheers, thanks for the comment. It is a shame it only works on the driver door and close up. I had a 1996 8 series BMW and it worked from a good distance no matter where you stood or pointed the FOB at so I don't know why the sensor has just a small range. Maybe it is cheaper to do as I have only a base model Merc.
My Mate VINCE I reckon it's likely to have something to do with security...
Yes, possibly someone could nick something from the car if it worked from a distance but on BMWs from the same/similar age it works from a distance but maybe Merc are more security conscience.

I have a back window that gets stuck in the down position and this method is how I have to put the window. Grateful for this video!
My cars windows even work from distance, around 5 to 6 meters. Of course you have to point the key towards ir receiver in handle. Great feature.

You have to point it to the driver side handle because that's where the laser eye is. On the older cars it didn't have the laser eye. I bough my Cls and tried opening it normally as I did before. It it wasn't working. The dealership said there is a laser eye as you can see the square eye next to the key hole. I guess it's a good safety feature in case your press the buttons in your pocket or someone finds your keys and tries to find your car by trying to unlock it from a distance

Hi guys.... have you not noticed that the handle has a small dark spot which is a IR receiver where the key needs to point to? The key has also a IR trasnmitter for that purpose. So it's not just pointing the key to the handle, but to the dark spot in the handle. This would explain when it sometimes appears to be temperamental. It's not! Just point the key to the right place. Hope this helps

On the W202 you can be down the road and open the windows. On the W203 the fob has to be almost against the ir. On very sunny days it doesn't work unless you cover the fob with your hand.

This tricks works on any ol Mercedes which has the sensor on the door handle... My old 05 C200 W203 had it, dads B170 W245 and my current C250 W204 coupe has it too... On the W204 u have make the horn sound when u lock the car
I have a W204 and had it for 4 years. I've never heard the horn sound locking or unlocking the car.

I just swapped my 2007 bmw for a 2013 Mercedes and I can’t believe this is the method for doing this! I could be 30 ft away and open/close the windows and roof on the bmw. Having to point the fob at some stupid little box at close range is hardly convenient!
you may also find that you can drive the mercedes with you door open for a good half min without hearing any warning sound. if you hear warning sound from your mercedes parking sensor, that means you are very very close to something,
Hi Vince, I went for a ride in my Mercedes Class Cabriolet today. I had the roof down as it was such a good weather. However, when I drove home, the roof would not shut down. It rolled up till halfway, and stopped. It then appeared 'Open and close top completely' on the display screen, so I don't really understand what actually happened. This is the first time I experienced this. So I left it open till I seek further advice. Could you kindly help me? Thank you

E90 bmw does it from 5metres away and probs even farther. W204 only does it if you point fob towards the infrared sensor on the drivers handle, it's a black lense like you get on a tv remote.
I tried in 07 MB E350 (W211, I believe, in UK...?) and: it rolled them up AND closed the sunroof faster than I could have manually. HOWEVER, I then tried rolling down all the windows/opening sunroof using the technique and instead pressing the UNlock button on the fob (and in this vehicle the fob had to be pretty much flush with the IR receiver near driver's door handle. I MUST HAVE MISSED SOMETHING--COULD ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO THE ROLL DOWN/OPEN ON THE HOT, PARKED CAR? In AZ that'd be an AWESOME feature to have (loading up/packing car while it's being ventilated from nearly every direction would dramatically reduce some hot hands and fannies! We need a seat COOLER, as well as the seat warmer, LOL!) Many thanks, I'm sure this is an older TH-cam vid!

For all that don't know this.....the key fob has 2 Transmitters(!!!!!!!) One is infrared, one is in the GHz RF band. The simple lock/unlock is handled by the RF transmitter and works from some distance away, as in all cars with key fobs. But NOW...Mercedes (only the best of the best) the IR transmitter (that also communicates with the car when you insert the key into the ignition lock) only works if you point the front end of the fob (just look at it, there is a dark plastic window, where other car keys have a metal key sticking out) That is a IR diode underneath that, and it only works if you are pointing it at the dark spot on the door handle....yes, that is the IR receiving diode underneath that. Only works when there is line-of sight, and relatively short distance. 10 feet or so works just fine, if your batteries in the fob are ok, and there is no Guacamole on the fob end, or on the receiver. Alles klar????Also dann....

In Mercedes-benz b class b180 cdi blueefficiency sport 5dr car there is No "Convenience" submenu option under setting to fold the automatically the exterior mirrors. But I can manually fold in and out. Please let me know how to set automatically fold in/out using the key.

+Cammea Durfield Hi, as far as I know I think you can opt for the sporty grill with the big 3 pointed star in the middle of the grill or go for the classic grill with the small 3 pointed star on the bonnet.

My GLA used to do this, with the remote control, open and close but now it doesn't, I have no idea why.
Just to update you, I figured out why my windows would not go up or down when pressing the buttons on the remote. If the remote battery is weak it will not roll up or down the windows. Replace the battery and it will be ok.

I went to clean the car of my boss and after I unlock the car I put the key in my pocket I bent to get something on the floor when suddenly the windows of the car opens,I was so nervous I don't know anything about cars except the manual thing. I tried looking around hoping someone would show up so I could asks for help but all I see are janitors cleaning the area. I feel so anxious that time luckily I had my phone with me,this video was the first thing appeared when I search the way to close the windows.

Hello everyone I have a 2017 c300 I love this feature but hate how close you have to be for it to work. Does anyone have an idea on how to increase the range?
On my BMW 5 series it used to close and open from like 15ft away so here I was thinking the function doesn't work on my eclass. Going to test later.

is it possible for me to turn down the light on the radio in my 2011 200 cdi MB I can turn down the light on the instrument panel but not the radio, its very bright at night i would prefer it toned down. Any help?
My 2007 r class can do this. It can completely open the panoramic sunroof as well. I think most Mercedes can do this.
I have a 2011 C Class - same as yours. There seems to be something wrong with your key or car - this works from metres away for me...

I think there might be something off, I can stand a good 15 feet away and do this. Might be a difference in country/frequency codes? Just letting you know that maybe your battery might be low, or something off.

Dude thanks for this vid. My German cars since the 90’s had this feature and I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t work on ‘14 W212. I couldn’t find it in the manual so figured it didn’t exist.
