the writer of this song and also the vocalist, i think he was only 18 when he wrote this song... that makes thinking how grown up he was already

This song is ingrained virtually into dna of evey Finn. It does remarkable job by capturing that "Finnish melancholy" that us Finns are so dearly fond of.

I think why this song is so popular is partly because, it's of course a beautiful composition. It also catches something called "finnish melancholy" very vividly, and I think this is a go to song for many people when they are feeling down.

Swan song means a song that, according to belief, a swan sings just before it dies more beautifully than ever. This is believed to be used especially by the mute swan, which usually does not sing. As a saying, Swan Song means the last performance, performance or achievement - possibly better than the previous ones - before the end or the death of a person.

This song is about grieving after death of the beloved. It was written for the mourning widow.

This is how you make songs which are truly powerful. Key to that is contrast. Soft singing , gentle melody - contrasted with heavily distorted guitars and primal scream.

It's a very popular and famous song in Finland but not really known outside of our borders. I'm so glad you reacted to it :) BTW, swan song usually refers to the supposed last uniquely beautiful song a dying swan sings..

Yö was founded In Pori, Finland at 1981. They have published 23 studio albums from 1983 to 2018. They still goes touring.
Listen "Rakkaus on lumivalkoinen" : The love is White as snow ( pure, maybe the Best Word To translate White as snow) ❤️

The original Yö is not touring anymore. The leader of the band died few years ago and Jussi Hakulinen didn't give any kind of proper blessing for the touring band.

There is the swan of death in Finnish mythologi, Tuonen Joutsen takes your soul to the River of Death ”tuonen virta”. That’s what the Swan song is about.

I personally love Hetken tie on kevyt by Tehosekoitin. It's also slightly melancholic but mostly romantic.
The name of the song can be translated as "For a moment, the road is light", and the song describes how love can make things feel nice for a moment.

Good catch with the feeling of South American music. The flute actually is called pan flute and it's played in many cultures around the world but it's especially known from the traditional music of the Inkas in the South American Andes.

Simply, thank you for listening to this song that I also recommended 🙏 This song is melancholic, but beautiful, downright magic ❣️
    Your reaction was amazing too😍❤️
I listened a Jussi Hakulinen’s (writer and singer of the song) interview, where he says that the song was born from the feeling that his mother and mother’s sister had something to hide. Those secrets were revealed him later. He also says that they (mother and aunt) behaved very differently from other relatives.
    According to belief, Swan Song
means that the swan sings especially strongly and loudly just before it dies.
In a person’s life Swan Song would be the last ”performance” before death.

The vocalist for this band, Yö (literally, "Night") Olli Lindholm, passed away some time ago. I want to say, few years, but sense of time is the least accurate of our senses. The band had a really ugly break up because the main song writer and the singer (who also wrote some of the songs) had issues with song rights. Now they have to wait a while, before they can continue these fights in the afterlife.

I always though "Joutsenlaulu" was a bit over-dramatic musically but to each their own.
    What's next? "Marraskuu"?
I wish there was a proper translation of "Menninkäinen ja päivänsäde" but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen.

Joutsenlaulu or The Song of The Swan means a persons last performance, accomplish or achivement before something ends or they die. The word comes from an old believing that swan sings only once; right before it dies.
Swan is our national bird and it has a special meaning to finns. It's illegal to kill a swan here and it's said you can get more jailtime by killing a swan than killing your wife🙄

This has to be one of the most poorly translated lyrics video i have seen so far.
I dont think the person who made it really speaks english that well.
I can fully understand how you think this is a breakup song from the english lyrics.
For example in the last verse the word ”tuska” is being translated as ”pain” when its more like agony. I dont think those 2 mean quite the same in english.
Not to mention its bordeline u readable with that red font
