Thanks for you comments! We appreciate your insights and have been following your channel for some time now. Just a couple of things we thought should be clarified though. This is not a recruitment video. This is actually just a small part of an educational package for the FDF conscripts aimed to give them a glimpse about what it COULD look like if Finland would be drawn to war. No Hollywood here, just pretty realistic shots of the action.
Recruitment is not an issue in the Finnish Defence Forces since we have a conscription based system. That system actually provides the FDF with first grade, professional level personnel for peace and war time service. The war time personnel is highly educated (including the officers, NCO’s and rank and file): practically everyone in the war time roster has a higher or vocational training. The reserve troops are getting refreshment training in a constant cycle to keep the FDF ready at all times. This creates a fighting force that is highly versatile and cohesive, with every member being able to take the initiative if necessary. A force comprised of real, intelligent and capable citizen soldiers who are defending their homes and families and take this responsibility seriously.
That ”Home Depo” scene is pretty accurate. Those guys are actually trained reservist who are getting back to military setting. After they get their gear sorted out they set it up and start the refresher training with their unit. No need to yell at their faces either: They’re grown up men and women who know what they are doing and what’s at stake here.
It is definitely not an insult to be called a conscript. The case is quite the contrary with the conscript readiness units: the members of the units are volunteers. The units are equipped and trained to be rapidly deployed to counter ”rapid changes in the security environment”. The fact that they are mentioned means that stuff just got serious.
The Defence Forces also traditionally has a high approval rating within the population, 82% in the last poll in 2019. Part of this is very likely because of the conscription system. Roughly 75% of the male population and a constantly rising number of volunteer women complete their military service. This means that practically every family has had their members serve in the military at some point in time. There’s really no need to argue about the taxes spend for the national defence as everyone basically understands why it is necessary.
That also means that there are no stolen valor village idiots, as you called them, in Finland 😄 You see people in military uniform on public places daily. You’re spot on with the hurry up and wait phase being missing from this movie. We’re trying to address that element as well as other not so sexy parts of the military in our channel videos. In this case it wouldn’t been practical: Wouldn’t want the the film to be 4 hours long.
Oh yeah, about the Day-Night thing: It actually doesn’t get dark during the summer here in the north. During the winter months on the other hand, it’s pretty dark no matter what time of the day it is, so we got some experience on fighting in the dark too 😎

IIRC Finland has mandatory conscription, and so those scenes in the "home depot" weren't random untrained civilians being given rifles and kevlar, they were reservists or people who had been through military training and were attached to a unit, and they were simply being issued their gear. Also conscript doesn't really seem like an insult in Finland, just a neutral term to describe people completing mandatory military service (which is the definition of conscription, so kudos for honesty, and not hiding behind some softer term, like other countries with a draft or mandatory service often do).

At the end of the day, videos like these are morale boosters for people who are being forced into military service. When I hear the term conscript, I think, a few steps above being a slave. Rough, but if you live in a small country that borders the largest country on Earth and have also been hostile to you in the past, then you don't really have much of a choice.

@@ristuksenvittu not really. It's the only reason a huge country with a small population, like Finland, can keep their defense budget low. Have you been in the military? I'm pretty sure this is one of the first thing they teach conscripts, why they are there at all.

  • @kv3515
    @kv3515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +598

It's more like an "introduction" video for Finnish conscripts and people in general. We have a conscription system and about 80-90 % of Finnish males in every age group serve in the military for 6-12 months. Being called a conscript is not an insult to most people, as it is simply what most our war time military would be. I'm serving as a profession and it's my personal calling, but not everyone is like this (which is most certainly not a negative thing lol). Greetings from Finland!

@Iain Bailey I also think it does most people good. Not everyone is gonna become a soldier, but everyone learns or atleast sees some basic discipline, group work and how to get over hardships. It's a very maturing experience for those who choose it to be that. And I'm old fashioned in the sense that I see defending the homeland and your people as a basic duty of every healthy full grown male. You gotta atleast know the basics.

Tbh the only thing i don't like about conscript is that you have a big change that the moral will be very low with some people. Like most of them don't want to fight. Good example is Germany WW2 Allot of them didn't want to fight and that defiantly happend at the end of the war with Germany. But i like that you can have peace time that you can have mandatory service. So like with Finland and Isreal if war breaks out they will have army that is trained really well. So you have reserves that already discipline

Sad thing being: there are so many idiots who live in the villages etc around bases and complain about the noise even going as far as filing complaints at the police. We can't even train our pilots or what? There is I think one range in Germany they are allowed to train with life ammunition.

Finland has conscription so every male above the age of 18 has to join the army unless they have medical or moral reasons to not join. These kinda videos are a boost of morale for fins who are currently doing or are about to start their military experience. It's not that we have difficulty getting the numbers as high as wanted, but the videos idea is to show the people what they are training for. I was in the army when this came out and it felt good to see this kinda propaganda video that showed aspects of things I have learned in my time in the army.

here's translation about this video: "Battlefield 2020 is an instructional video specifically for conscript training. The video is part of the combat training instructional material given in the beginner period and in the non-commissioned and reserve officer courses. The video is also used in the training of reservists and staff.
The purpose of the battlefield is to give trainees a realistic picture of the Defense Forces as a whole, the circumstances and operating environment of exceptional circumstances, as well as threat models and readiness regulation. The Defense Forces Service Center has produced an educational film commissioned by the General Staff Training Department during 2016-2020. The film replaces the previous Battlefield film released in 1998.
According to Major Ville Kostian, the project manager of the battlefield learning material, the instructional videos aim to illustrate phenomena that are difficult to highlight in other ways.
    - Videos often show problem situations, but above all solutions to solve them. In a contact teaching situation, the discussion with the trainer about the topic or phenomenon presented in the teaching video is central, Kostian says.
    - The battlefield is the view of Finnish experts in the field of what war could be like today. Our goal has been to describe it to the trainees as realistically as possible."

I think you’re being unfair. This programme is made as information about how Finland would react to an invasion attempt. For European countries there is no such thing as an overseas war. The fight would be at our doorstep and the first to take the brunt would be currently serving conscripts and career military personnel, ie. navy, airforce and a few tier one SF ready for direct action stuff. It would be their job to give the mobilization of conscript trained soldiers enough time to equip and organize into fighting units. What you see as the home depot scene is actually conscript defence force being done right!

Ukraine essentially did at the start what Finland did but much less well equipped and without such a long tradition of training and readiness, with reforms in training and individual initiative only since 2014. For example, the Russians took Hostomel Airport much as the airport in the early stages of the video was taken (surprised attack of helicopter-dropped VDV rather than faking a mayday landing - but essentially the same concept). Because Finland could react fast as simulated, they blocked the runway with trucks. Ukraine did it by cratering the runway.

"Finnish defence Forces also commented over here. So, like I said before, DO SOME BASIC RESEARCH and you can actually learn some shit and not be one of the ignorant 'Muricans, like so many people see them as one. I wonder why...
"Thanks for you comments!
During the winter months on the other hand, it’s pretty dark no matter what time of the day it is, so we got some experience on fighting in the dark too 😎""

7:00 the conscript readiness unit is literally conscripts in process of completing their mandatory military training who have been assigned on alert in case something like a major industrial accident happens, where they would be expected to assist in search, rescue, and cordoning the area. Or, as in this case, when the police are dealing with an incident heavier in scope and firepower involved than the civilian authorities are prepared for.

Being a conscript is not an insult in any nordic country or Finland. It's the primary way to get into the military and the conscripts are the backbone of invasion defence. It was conscripts and volunteers who gave Russia a beating in the Winter war.
The second way to get into military is to volunteer for service. Also, proffessional officers start as either conscripts or volunteers.

I guess what would explain a lot is that the Finnish army is conscription based. Nearly the whole male Finnish population and a part of the female population will serve at least 6 months and thus there is no recruitment aspect to these videos.
Im pretty sure the main goal is to simulate scenarios where an unspecified enemy (lets just assume Russia) starts a modern war against Finland, and these simulations are to more easily point out flaws in the Finnish m.o. in order to improve them.
I guess some scenes look a bit dramatized or too scripted but as a non Finnish European I got to say that Finland has probably one of the strongest armies in Europe, along with the Swiss, Ukraine and Russia.
Also what I think is pretty cool about the Finnish army structure, is that almost every higher educated Fin will also either assume an officer training or special training in coms, logistics, engineering, or something along those lines, which is quite a relevant portion of the Finnish army.

For the people wondering how it is to be a neighbour of Russia, wether we exagerate the russian threat.
I’m also bordering the Russian space.
    I’m from Romania.
i will tell you just why romanians don’t view russia positively.
Firstly they Invaded us 13 times in last 200 years.
In 1812 they incorporated a chunk of our Romanian historical land with 100% Romanian speakers into the russian empire called Basserabia (Republic of moldova today).
They starved the romanians and brought tens of thousands of Russians with suitcases to live in their houses to make the area russian speaking.
(That is why you find today russian speakers in moldova although they are separated by ukrainians 1000km from the russian mainland)
In ww1 we were allies with the russians and sent our gold to Russia for safe keeping because our capital got overran and the russians never gave it gold back. 100 tonnes.
In ww2 1939 they invaded Basserabia again and deported up to 40k-200k romanians to Kazachstan most of them still live there. Many were executed for political reasons by the NKVD resembling the violence of you know who.
They conscripted Romanian soldiers into the Soviet army and put them to fight the Romanian army. Like brother against brother fight.
After 1944 we switched sides and soviets stripped us of heavy weapons and sent romanians where there was the biggest carnage without support in order to run the army to the ground as revenge.
Suffered in last 1 year of war alongide Soviets same killed and wounded as in 4 years sided with Germany including disaster at Stalingrad.
Cold war: Together with enforcing communism and killing our intelectuals in prisons, Russians took food from conquered territories years after the war leading to deaths due to starvation. They created colonial enterprieses called SovRom that mined all our gold, uranium, oil and shipped for free to the ussr till 1970.
We paid more war reparations than Germany in nominal terms, although russia invaded us first in 1939 and spent the last year of war fighting alongside the russians.
Present day russia brainwashes the romanians in the Basserabia (Republic of moldova) and pro russian politicians hold them captive in their own country and try to create fear against Romania saying that we are evil and so... like we were the ones deporting them to kazachstan.
So you now have an ideea i hope so, why certain countries feel they way about russia: because they had many negative experiences with it.
And the russian history teacher or media won’t tell the people of russia that.
They would say that romania has gone insane and is a puppet of america... no is not, it’s protecting herself from what i said above.

As a Finnish conscript, I can confirm this is not really "hollywood".
The only part I can't say about, is the command room part, where the higher ranking officers are in one room in front of computers. The conversations would likely be the same, but I suspect the actual meetings would not take place from one room. But for the sake of filming and making the situation understandable for a viewer, the officers are in one room (for all I know, that might be an actual command HQ setup for wartime, or simplified to be in one room).
The action is mainly the sort of exercises we do in the army every week. I suspect that they just filmed a lot of the normal training missions for most of the action footage. The "news segments" are obviously acted out for the narrative.
The conscript term isn't really an insult for us. We are proud to be well trained and professional about defending our country. The career soldiers here in Finland mostly focus around training and guiding us conscripts. We conscripts show lots of respect to them for dedicating their career to be the very best at protecting our land, family, democracy, and values. They respect the conscripts a lot, for giving 6-12 months of their lives, and a vow to defend the same things with our lives. The backbone of the Finnish army, are the conscripts. If we were poorly trained, unmotivated, and feeling inferior or insignificant, the performance of the entire army would collapse.
The army also doesn't work like conscripts working in different forces than the career soldiers. The career soldiers are in every unit. Their role is to guide the conscripts and lead by example. The conscripts are very well trained. They have done thousands of drills on their specific roles, and the basic soldier's skills. They are very competent soldiers, who respect and follow the orders of the career soldiers, as well as reservist officers.

If I remember correctly, Finland is one of the few countries that still uses 7.62x39mm instead of 5.45x39mm in their AK pattern rifles due to the forests and the superior barrier penetration of 7.62x39mm.

    • @kolekole6017
      @kolekole6017 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

True. Also because of the dense forests the combat would be mostly on very short range so we really wouldn't benefit from the improved accuracy and range that you get with smaller calibers.
One other reason we still use the 7.62x39 AK pattern rifles is money. There might be more modern weapon systems available but I guess the Defense Forces have concluded that the benefit of more modern rifle wouldn't outweigh the cost and have decided to spend their very limited budget on more important stuff.

Don't mistake the RK series for a mere AK pattern rifle. There's a reason American gun enthusiasts would love to get their hands on a Valmet.
It's like a mix between an AK and AR pattern (The Israelis copied it for the Galil) with some AK mechanics and ergonomics, and some AR-like ergonomics such as better sights and on the modernized rifles, rails for optics and the like. The gas system is also original if I'm not mistaken.
Reportedly better average performance than either platform, and the ammo used is extremely high grade stuff, not like that horrid surplus comblock ammo. From a bench I think they're around 1MOA at 100m which is unheard of for a service rifle, only really matched by the Swiss rifles. Most rifles are 3MOA or so.
Of course, as reliable as any good AK or AR, although due to age, there are some faulty examples still in the armory, hence the modernization program. Frontline troops get the best rifles I imagine.

As many have said, this is not a drafting video since our defence forces (yes, it's actually called Finnish Defence Forces to indicate it's only purpose) are conscription based. Military service is mandatory for all men (with a few exceptions) and a voluntary for women. Historically we have had a very large active reserve. However it's size has been reduced in the last 15 years, mainly to reduce costs. One argument has been that the whole consept on modern warfare has changed and a full scale whole border wide attack is less likely. After the WWII the idea was that we need a big army to be able to man the whole length of our borders. Nowadays the more likely threat would be a hybrid attack against infrastructure by "smaller unmarked forces". This video gives one example of how that might happen if some nation would decide to start an invasion against us.

Finland has pretty impressive war time strength (280 000) and the whole reserve (900 000). With only a population of 5,5 million that would mean the same as the US having a war time strength of 17 million and a reserve of 53,7 million.
Also during WW2 Finland lost 97 000 soldiers & civilians making up 2,62% of her population at the time. That doesn't sound that bad but if we do a comparison like before it would mean the same as us losing 8,6 million.

We know that Russian infantry respects strong artillery. In the summer 1944 Finland's army's artillery was best in the world. (it is true!) You don't believe this, but if you find english pages in Google about Tali-Ihantala fight in June 1944, you may find it.
