Weeds after hydroseeding. excessive weeds in new hydroseed. when can I treat weeds after hydroseed
Thanks for tuning into another episode of "What's Wrong With My Lawn" . On this episode we visit Dennis on his birthday to help him out with a hydroseed issue. He has just as many weeds as he does grass. He hydroseeded his front yard one month ago and is inundated with weeds.
His back yard was sodded last year and has several brown and orange areas.
Per the usual protocol we do the Ginja 5 Step Lawn Diagnostic Approach.
1. Pattern
2. Color
3. Water Saturation Test
4. Lawn debris Test
5. Pull Test
You'll notice in this episode we skip the debris test because as we go through the lawn we find the lawn is so new there is no debris.
The pattern and color show us there are dog urine spot and sprinkler coverage issues. The water saturation test reveals the back yard has issues with sprinkler coverage that need to be fixed.
Ultimately for the back yard we need to focus on sprinkler coverage first and foremost. Secondary to that we need to run a recovery service that usually consists of the Essentials 1-0-1 and 1lbs N per 1000ft2. Then we need to regularly increase calcium and humates to accomodate for the dog urine spot.
As for the front yard we need to monitor water output, follow the fertilizer plan mapped out from the hydroseed company and last but not least hand pick the weeds. Yes I said hand pick the weeds. The lawn is so new that it is best to hand pull the weeds. The last thing we want to do is to introduce more salt and anti-rooting chemicals into the soil. If the weeds get out of control and we are unable to hand pick the weeds I recommend spot spraying with tenacity and t-zone combined with an non-ionic surfactant.
I hope you enjoy the show!

Thanks! We had a great time
How do you keep a lawn from going into stress dormancy? There are several things you must do. You must water deep once a week. You need to have plenty of calcium to keep the roots tender and sucking up moisture. I don't know why, it just seems to work. To balance the calcium, since you do not want chlorosis (bleaching), you must have plenty of magnesium and iron. For high-ph (alkaline) soils you recommended gypsum. OK but be careful. Some soil chemistry tests might be in order. And you must shield the roots from the sun so you need to have about a half inch of fine loose lawn clippings down at the roots. In my experience this is best accomplished with a side discharge mower set for a very short clip, say no more than a half inch to come off the top, and go over the lawn a couple of times in different directions. The clipping dust will filter down lightly and come out a little shorter and drier on the second pass. And you should keep the lawn at a height between 3 and 4 inches depending on the variety. Lastly you should water daily or every second day at sunrise for 30 minutes. Oh yes - nice advice on slow release nitrogen. The last thing you want is a big blast of nitrogen on a dormant lawn. But a little continuous feed of it is really good.
I wrote this before the end of your video. Ain't it amazing how we agree on things? !
You're awesome Fred. Sounds like you're starting to see the method to my madness. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks very much. I worked with my dad making lawns and had to use a push reel mower for years as a kid. I started on lawn work on my own as a teenager during one summer in Salem Oregon in 1964. My mom got me an 18-inch electric from Eaton's not long after that (back in Edminton) and I mowed lawns in the neighborhood just for the fun of it. Experimented with chemicals and fertilizers. Soil there is rich in most minerals, grows fabulous wheat and vegetables, but needs nitrogen. Only 2 places in Canada where you find black chernozim soil, the best there is. One is south of Regina on my dad's farm and the other runs thtough Edmonton straight east to the Saskatchewan border. Then in 1973 I moved out to the coastal rain forest around Vancouver. Pretty sandy natural soil with not much in the way of minerals. Sometimes you would find clay patches especially after construction. I screened my whole back yard and took out the construction garbage and rocks and added clay and compost. Made pretty nice grass (creeping red fescue and Kentucky Blue with some annual rye as a nurse crop) but it still needed minerals. The provincial government gave me a little help with that. I got the hang of mulching by fooling around for years with it and mostly hand raking it out twice a year with a fine toothed sawblade-shaped lawn rake. As a hobby I actually tore volunteer lawnmowers to pieces (collected them on recycling week) and I remanufactured them and used some and gave the rest away. I wound up with a lot of spare parts. I even did environmental tests by leaving them out in the rain to see how badly they might rust or other wise deteriorate. Testing my work. Neighbors must have thought I was nuts but a well made and well painted and well lubricated lawn mower can stand a lot of rain. Just keep the blade and the deck underside clean, lubricated and in good shape and the electrical parts dry. And save those wheel adjusters, motors and wheels!
Love hearing about your history. I was born there in Oregon, small world. Gotta love playing in the dirt.
Great content and info! Thanks Ginja!
You're welcome Paul. Thanks for watching!
They need to mow more also weeds will always grow when you only mow every 2-4 weeks. Weekly mows cut down on weeds tremendously but most customers don’t want to keep up with weekly maintenance
In the back I would first make sure sprinklers covering properly and check watering schedule to make sure it’s getting enough water. Once it Green’s back up, apply slow release summer fertilizer. In front I would spray with a broadleaf weed control, and follow up in two weeks with a second. If grass doesn’t stress then go ahead with fertilizer in front also. Stand back and watch it grow.
if the lawn was established I would agree with you
Pest and Lawn Ginja love your videos, you give some great advice!

Great info video , i"m prepping my back yard for grass seed ( Kentucky blue) is it too late in the season to throw down seed ? I"m in Colorado
You'll be cutting it close. You need to be 8 to 10 weeks out from the first frost for kbg. You can always dormant seed as well. It's just throwing the seed down when the soil temps get below 50 permanently.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks for the quick reply
you're welcome
Always the best knowledge, I will keep learning!!!!!
Thanks for the compliment. I really appreciate it.
I been in my home a long time and my lawn looks worse than that. Between burning up in late July and my dog killing what’s left which is a vast array of weeds😥.
I’m gonna try to make some changes this fall that I learned from your videos and hopefully end up with some real grass in the spring.✌🏻
It can be hard to know where to start especially when things get that bad. You can do it!
Pest and Lawn Ginja, Thank you. At this point I have nothing to lose so I’m just going to start from scratch.
I learned from you about watering and feeding so thank you again.
Nice! You'll do well
Great consultation! Denis was lucky to get your advice! They look/talk like good people!
Thanks Jay! We had a good time. Very good people
Ninja, Your friend is going to be in the long haul for fixing that lawn. I bet about 3 years in the front. Pre emergent and post weed treatment with Tenacity and Quinclorac, PH balancing, nutrient balancing, and a whole bunch of reseeding after those weeds die off. I would get a N-EXT bio stimulant 4 pack and start with getting better soil nutrient balance while getting the PH in check to slow down those weeds this year. . Also that's a lot of dormant weed germination. WOW! Just picture how many new weed seeds already dropped this season. That front lawn might be one that may needs to be killed off completely and fully seeded again next spring with a real high quality pre- emergent...Good luck and great video....
Thanks Pete. Yes its a bit over whelming. I think we can get this taken care of by next season no problem. Once we decide to use herbicides it'll make the job much easier. I've been through this battle before and there is truth that the biennials are yet to come. Next 18 months will have weed issues. If we increase the calcium rates the weeds will go down.
At least he can be thankful he only has a small yard with irrigation. Not like my 2 acres and no irrigation. I minimize the stress by amending soil and mowing higher at sunset in the dry summer. But man, those lovable dogs always have there problem area.
I hear that Greg. Dogs can be difficult on the lawn
This guy has a lot of weeds, but he still has a LOT more grass than I do, and I'm jealous...
his lawn looks fantastic now
I had hydro seed done in April in Michigan. It came in nice, but I have Nutsedge EVERYWHERE!!!! What should I do? Hand pulling nutsedge doesnt do anything from what I’ve read. Any other ideas?
It is true that pulling nutsedge can be counter productive. If you hydroseeded in april you should be okay to spot spray or blanket app with tenacity
I want fence all the way around my yard. Preferably so I can pretend neighbors don't exist.
makes sense!
Johnson grass?I see it on roadsides and I have seen it on poor maintained lawns by open unkept fields.i thought I read it's gly resistant and only can be rid of by digging out or flooding and creating root rot.is there a herbicide or pre that will take care of Johnson grass?thank you if you get to this question
There are a few bottles that claim they are a target pest. I've tested a few and they didnt work. As of now I've had no issues killing it with glyphosate
lol..i knew you would respond,I was just trying to be humble.have a great day
Love that you comment. Really appreciate the support to our lawn ninja community

Love it! Thanks for watching
You've been missing all of Ginja's "what's wrong with my lawn"! You need to get out more often!
Im a regular on this Ginja channel👊😎
I love your videos, keep up the good work. I run an organic lawn care and hydroseed business pretty close to you. Tenacity should be used pre hydroseed every time. It's also safe to use 6 weeks after hydroseed if you prep with a potassium silicate , humid filmic acid, and a liquid micro a few days before the spot spray. This will keep the newly sprouted grass from bleaching. I also refuse to hydroseed after early may, too many issues. It's too hot for optimal growth and the roots need to be deeper than a few inches for summer to be healthy and fill in. Mother nature will cover what you dont.
Great feedback! That's quiet a lot of prep for a spot spray. Glad to hear its doable. I'll have to give it a try!
@@pestandlawnginja It's my usual summer stress treatment anyways so it goes in the rotation of most lawns. If I sell a hydroseed job that's part of doing it. Too many people sell crap products and half done jobs in this industry. I won't even hydroseed until I see the sprinkler system run and think it's adequate.
how well do you feel it works on spurge and black medic?
It will knock it back and bleach it out a little but it comes back. Drive xlr8 will destroy it but I am not a huge fan of using that. I try to use the least amount of pesticides as possible. Have you sprayed Oxalis with tenacity yet? Come back in a week and the whole thing turns a beautiful pink.
yes i have. I prefer straight ester oil. works like a champ. T-zone and quinclorac work great too
There's a lot of good lawns out there, But Its hard to have a dog with an aptitude, Or lack of ! I enjoy your vids.
😂😂😂 He's great isn't he!
Same thing happened to me after a 9,000 sq ft hydroseed except there were far more weeds. Handled it by bagging most mowings and then a heavy overseed with a slice seeder during the fall and good pre-emergents the next spring. It came in great.
Nice! Glad to hear.
Yeah i saw the video on the actual hydroseeding being done on this property. And that’s exactly what he asked the homeowner to do once the grass sets into the soil that way the grass can handle the weed treatments. He also clearly doesnt water properly, which can cause weeds
Good info, this year I did the Scott's my lawn app, mow at 4" and we don't water where i live in South Dakota. So far so good, seems the 4" mowing resists drought and chokes out weeds. Grass is blue grass and fergous.
That's awesome. Love hearing this
That really sucks for the guy.....one huge weed nuke went off in his yard. Im fighting alot of weeds because of my neighbors directly arounds me dont do any weed control. Heavy hitting is that stupid creeping charlie. Slowly learning weed control to not end up like that yard. Thanks for the videos and information
Thanks for the comment Todd! Creeping Charlie is a beast from what I've seen you need tryclopyr, dicamba, mecoprop, 2,4d , quinclorac, and an mso surfactant and on top of that treat late fall just before dormancy
I have a handful of weeds in my back yard but slowly working on eliminating them. Pretty much just hand pulling and overseeding. Next spring will start using a pre-emergent and going to try Scott's weed b gone. After to see if I can beat it all. But the creeping charlie seems to be fully gone now. I found it easy when hand pulling to go slow and try to pull up the runners mostly in tact and I was able to remove large patches of it pretty quick.
That's awesome to hear chad!
You’re in Utah?! I need help with my hydro seed home bad lol
Hey there! Hydroseed is a patient mans game. the only herbicide id use on it would be tenacity but you have to be about 2 months out from the seeding to play it safe.
@@pestandlawnginja Ok! Thanks for responding! We're coming up on 2 months here in a week, so i'll wait a little to do that. Thank you!
great lawn advice with no BS
Thanks Ben! I do my best
The graphic mentioned calcium and humates for the urine spots. I have plenty of GCF H12 but what is the calcium source and amount? Is this something I can just premix and keep in a 1 gal sprayer and apply as needed?
the type of calcium will depend on the soil ph. for low ph you'll need lime. for alkine gypsum. nuetral calcium nitrate.
Great video. Seems like you were holding back a little on the grass installer. :-)
well.... to be honest I just wish these guys would do a better job getting the home owners educated on how to properly pre the soil. It does cost more but they would have had less than half of the weeds.
Just love Ginja's attitude with the homeowner. That's a lot of weeds! What's the cost for hydro seeding? Is it worth it? Your son with his laptop...playing games or editing your video?
The last I called around hydroseeding ranged between $225 to $600 with minimum fees for an average 2500ft2 lawn. The theory is the rooting is better for the lawn and over all you'll have a healthier well established lawn. As opposed to sod where they cut off 50% or more of the roots and it comes to you in shock.
My son was sneaking an offline game on google hahaha. I told him it was Dennis's bday and he figured there was going to be a party no matter what I told him.
Hi I’m having a similar issue! I recently had my yard cleared and had all new topsoil after grading and hydro seed… the weeds are overwhelming but the worst part is that I have a TON of mugwort! How should I tackle this? I’m afraid most pre and post emergents won’t kill it and glyphosate will just kill what grass I do have growing…. Help?
😬 it’s very invasive. Spot treating with a non selective is the option other than hand pulling over and over and over
I think they seeded with a weed mix.
Hahaha maybe.
How do you find out which nutrients are low in soil, is there a process location where they can test plugs from soil locations?
Thanks in advance!
Good question! companies like mysoilsavvy.com provide soil tests at a reasonable cost. I haven't used them nor am I sponsored by them. no matter who you choose to go with make sure they test the cec levels for the micronutrients. the other tests only show N P K
Nice video. After hydro seeding after how many weeks will you apply fertilizer (they say to apply starter fertilizer after 5 to 6 weeks). Do you mow and then apply the fertilizer or just apply it on the grass since again you’ll need to wait till 8 weeks to mow the lawn? By then the fertilizer would have anyway settled right?
After a hydroseed i commonly will use the growth products 8 0 9 starting 4 to 6 weeks out then hit it every 2 weeks for a few months. then I˜ll switch over to more nitrogen or add more nitrogen at about the 3 month mark.
Maybe not the right place to ask, but I’m curious to what you charge for something like this?
Hit me up on facebook

Can milorganite introduce weeds? My lawn had almost zero weeds but after I used milorganite for the first time, about a month later I have a ton of weeds.
No it cannot. However it has a ton of phosphorus that can help with germination. The weeds seeds were there you just gave them some sugar
I like this type of video with the customer! Good job!
Instead of Essentials 101, could I simply mix my own using super thrive, sea kelp, humic, and iron?
For sure! The essentials has l-aminos and vitamin b6 and b12 that would be missing. However it doesnt mean it's the only product that can help! Sounds like a good game plan to me

Gotta love ned putting his but in every shot LOL
Ginja: When is a good time to overseed the grass (fall or spring) I have bermuda grass. Will pre-emergent (prodiamine) prevent the grass germinate?
pre emergents do prevent seeds from rooting during the germination process. I like to do dormant seeding because I'm lazy. I put the seed out over winter. If you want to do it now you can do it in the fall time. You just have to be diligent about watering properly

Hi Ginja, Great info. as always! :) I have a question if you have 2 seconds. When should you start mulching a newly sown Fescue/ Ryegrass lawn? Keep up the great work! :)

Great Video Ginja! Keep up the great work. I thought for sure you were gonna recommend hitting the weeds with a mild-ish herbicide. Weeding a big patch like that via hand pulling is a tremendous chore!
I am gonna break down and overseed/ re-seed some bare spots after labor day this year. I have a spot not recovering where my teenage driver constantly ran over the turf in the corner parkstrip last year while backing out of the driveway a year ago. Where would you recommend getting seed along the wasatch front? I prefer more of a Kentucky Blue dominant mix if possible. Thanks!
Great question hunky! I prefer pure kentucky Bluegrass. IFA does sell some pure blends. It's expensive but worth it. No weed seeds in the mix. You may have to ask for the contractor blend with zero weed seeds.
Nicely done! You do not need a drone. Instead, may I suggest a BigNed cam?
😂😂😂😂 done!
I’d love to see you do a nitrogen episode breaking down the different sources and when you would want to use each. Maybe show some typical bags you find at Home Depot and then more specialized bags you find at IFA
Great suggestions. Thank you
Can you effectively pull the roots of the weeds when weeding by hand?
Yes! Use your hose, soak the area first then pull
Dealing with mostly clover in my yard. I have always spot spray these areas with Amine 2,4D weed killer, with a surfactant and blue dye. Seems to work here in lower Michigan. Sometimes have to do this twice a season. Any other suggestions? Love your channel man, your the best!
Tenacity is low level and works great! Other than that straight ester is my go to. Lv6
Pest and Lawn Ginja - Have never heard of the ester. Lv6 has 88.4% 2,4-D compared to 46.4% in the Amine I use. I hear the tenacity works better on crabgrass for in season kill back, both are a little more expensive, but will try them when I’m ready to buy again. Thanks
@@gregpollsutube The upfront cost maybe more expensive but the 1000ft2 cost is way below others IMO. LV6 comes in around $0.43 per 1000ft2 and tenacity at $1.48
This was fun man. Really enjoyed this.
I honestly just feel bad for the dude. You see those weeds and it stressed me out just looking at it. Maybe he can invite the family over and instead of presents have people pick weeds lol.
Ol’Ned just always keeps it real. Peace out ginja.
Seriously Jake. They're doing well. Sp far theyve picked small sections at a time and have been pulling away
Hey Ginja! Which company do you use for soil testing?
I'm actually in the same boat as this guy although not as bad. I've got some tenacity coming in this week so I can get rid of these weeds from the past owner.
www.spectrumanalytic.com ask for the T3 test for the ultimate view of your soil
Pest and Lawn Ginja awesome thanks!
That looks like a salad!
YES!!!! I'm sure there are plenty of vegans out there doing it
I had to laugh seeing that lawn even if its really not funny haha. Wow um lots of stuff going on there. That look after pick out the weeds but........hahaha. To funny!
hahaha, for sure! Nobody wants to hear the best thing hahaha

@@pestandlawnginja Had to...just got my first JD lawn tractor with mowing deck and 44" SNOWBLOWER! Watching Christmas movies .

Did you mention to the owners to start watering their pets with filtered and/or bottled water to help drastically reduce the nitrates in the pet's urine? Nice vid and God bless! 😁👍
always a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion
Hey Ginja when mixing tenacity with speedzone do you have to lower the label rate? Or do you just use label rate for both herbicides.
I found the high rates on both worked best
@@pestandlawnginja sweet thanks
You're welco.e
Love your approach , knowledge and love for this stuff. I was once passionate about turfgrass in NJ and I’m really trying to find it again. I used to take hundreds of hours of classes at Rutgers and so forth but the demise of my business and other stuff have been punishing to me. I am still active in the field but what you are doing is my true calling . Do you have a system that you sell or make available to landscapers and turf guys? I’m slowly crawling back to life .
I feel you. I really enjoy this work. I'm in the works on putting together a learning course. Itll be year next season. For now start by "enjoying the mow" such a simple thing. Mow a few times per week. First things first it all starts with water. Get it dialed in!
Pest and Lawn Ginja once I get going, it all comes back. University of Georgia have a great study course online. I’ve done it 2x bit get distracted or too busy to finish. Gonna give it another go and also have my views on you.
@@DC-ih8bv awesome man! Get on that lawn!
Any affordable micro paks on Amazon?
I haven't found a well rounded one I love on amazon. Google mikropak
Hi
Wanted to get a humic/sea kelp blend shown in ur video (great 8) cant find it anywhere. What keeps popping up for a blend is seaweed/humic, is that the same?
Yes. The amount or percentages will vary. My opinion is sea kelp is sea kelp and humates are humates. Humates and humic acid are the same thing
@@pestandlawnginja So sea kelp and seaweed are the same?
Yes. They are the same
@@pestandlawnginja Thx 4 fast reply! Very helpful.

Wow that is bad!
Right!? It was pretty overwhelming
A Prius!?!?
Hahahaha yah...... 49mpg vs 18mpg work vehicle won me over
OMG you drive a Prius! I'm sorry, at least Ned doesn't care.
Never mind wanted two things in life a minivan and a Prius and somehow I got both hahaha
@@pestandlawnginja The minivan is just too convenient when you add family members and Ned
It's the automatic door close and open that won me over
@@pestandlawnginja that's not an excuse. Rolls Royce and Bentley both have automatic doors! HA!

I see joker, riddler, penquin, cat woman and Mr freeze grass. You really should replace your Prius with a Batmobile.

I think Ginja should drive a Shelby GT 500 Supersnake to get Ned to outings with gusto. 😁

Why is that lady recording? Super awkward…
It was her husbands birthday and she was trying to capture some memories.
If he has foxtail be sure to tell him to watch the dogs around it can do major damage to them.
Good call!
If I overseed this fall, can I use a pre emergent next spring to prevent crabgrass?
Yes you can assuming you get the seed to germinate this fall.
Pest and Lawn Ginja okay. Thank you!

You should google for lawn mower rather than promoting, again,
carcinogenic herbicides. Unsbucribing this time.
