I told a customer service rep that you did a very nice video on how to use a Sun Joe and you mentioned that you like it a lot ! they thanked me and said she wanted to watch it ! ( hopefully they sent you a new FREE ONE ! )
I bought one after watching your video and my lawn has never ever looked better! its one sweet little machine and it works a lot better than the rental machines !
OMG! Because of your tips my husband is getting better what to do and how 😄next year we hope our lawn start looking better. As you said Ginja one problem at the time. Thanks so much!😎
Still referring to this video, 3 yrs later. Relevant and helpful. Especially for those like me in transition zone. It's an okay system. My only issue is there excessive use of urea. It more often times than not appears to be a primary fertilizer ingredient as opposed to a supplement. There fall mix I do believe fits my exact criteria. However it needs to go down before the ground temps dip below 50 degrees because of the urea base.
had a cool vacation down in Utah. went to the salt lake, people can float. The island out in the middle of the lake with wild animals very cool. Bee hive house and a lot of morman history was all interesting. the Kennecott copper mine and where the movie footloose was filmed was neat also.
Nice! If you're talking about urea at 40 degrees ground temps I've found it doesnt convert to ammonium nitrate at those temps. I'd stick to ammouniam nitrates at a 21.0.0 rate or an equivalent of 1lbs of N per 1000 sq ft
New sub here. I’m in the process of rehabbing a sorely neglected lawn that hasn’t been irrigated in over 5 years. My E Tn lawn has always been mowed at 3.5-4.0” and I just whacked it back to 2.5” a few days ago and bagged it. Then I went over it with my new dethatcher I got from Lowes (I think they call it an electric cultivator) that brought up lots of debris from years of mulching and one more pass with the bagging mower to remove the thatch. Yesterday I overseeded with a generous amount of fescue seed - then came the rain. I felt like I had threaded the needle to get seed on my thin grass. I’ll wait a bit before fertilizing to give seed time to germinate. I’m already an old man, and might not get to the level of trying to level my lawn, which is what drew me to your channel in the first place. But I’m planning to get the irrigation system up and running next spring. I enjoy your knowledge and teaching abilities more than I admire your beard. 👍
Thank Greg! Sounds like you're well on your way to slaying the lawn! Well done. That's a ton of work you put in. I know..... Hurts my back thinking about it hahaha.
You sir have a very bad lawn addiction!!😂😂 I hate mowing my lawn..but I do like it to be green. So I hire it cut..and fertilize it myself. Thanks for all the tips pal..very helpful.😁👌👍
I overseeded/planted tall fescue in early Sept., and have cut three times so far. Would it be safe to put down my urea around the first week of Nov. as long as I follow label on bag ? Thank you
Ginja what determines when to stop watering completely for the year/season. Is it a particular soil temperature or ambient temperatures that approach freezing?
Right on time with some needed INFO BEFORE we put the new RTF to sleep thanks GINGA , ITS BEEN A REAL FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SPRING PAL THANKS FOR ALL.
Lawn looks good. Is the soil temp the deciding factor when fertilizing late? I aerated and over seeded 4 weeks ago but did not fertilize. Is it to late to lay some down? My grass is still growing. Im in ontario canada
Soil temps are the deciding factor no matter what time of year. Having a thermometer is a great investment. I wouldn't do anything heavy if you put down seed 4 weeks ago. I would do a 10% nitrogen or less at .2lbs N per 1000 sq ft or less
Hi...thanks for your helpful video. I live near Sacramento...Roseville, CA. and bought this home in Dec. 2020. There is a small 1400 sq. ft. back yard lawn with sprinklers. I've never cared for a lawn (other than cutting) and need basic help starting now 11/22/2021. I do have a mower, string trimmer, etc. Winter temps drop to 40 - 60 , or so. Here is what's happening: 1. Lawn was bombarded with crabgrass this summer as well as "other stuff like clover, etc." 2. I pulled out all the crabgrass with Fiskars weed puller. I bought top soil and refilled all the divots left by pulling out crab grass. 3. I have a dethatching rake and am now doing that myself 4. Two lawn experts want to cut out the entire lawn and replant with new sod for around $8,000. Obviously, I want to see if I can salvage what I have. 5. Do I need to analyze the soil? What comes next... core aerating, fertilizing, overseeding, weed killer, etc.? It seems a bit confusing to figure out the proper fertilizer to use and...in what order. I'm not sure which grass was planted here. One expert said it is fescue. It appears the previous owners threw out some other seed, as well. The soil seems to be a dense clay-like and sticky. I would greatly appreciate some guidance on the proper order of procedures to have a decent lawn by next spring/summer. I am willing to spend money on whatever I need to restore my backyard lawn. Thank you for your help.
Hi there. sounds like you're doing a good job for the most part. 90% of your success will come from proper watering. my suggestion is to do a water output cup test and prove your coverage is good and identify if you have even coverage. see and perform the video exercise at the end of our watering page at myallgreen.com/watering after you do the video exercise and fix the coverage issues you'll want to maintain 6" of water saturation in the soil for best rooting. the water you replace each week will be determined on evaporation rates. In order to choose the right fertilizer you would need to do a soil test to find out what's plant available in the soil. I prefer to use mysoil as a test lab and have a video on that.
Man! I'm gonna have to start all over this fall. My yard is 80% weeds. I never did a pre emergent and i never did a post emergent because i didn't want to stress the new grass seed i put down in the spring. I dont think i had any of it take well enough to be around next spring. correct me if i'm wrong but i need to get rid of all the weeds prior to growing new grass. There was too much competition and the weeds grow much faster than the grass. Next time you're in South Carolina, come on by and tell me "whats wrong with my lawn" haha! Thanks Ginja!
South Carolina is on the bucket list! Great scenery there. If you're lawn is super crowded out it is beneficial to treat for the weeds to build the lawn. I would look into a few tenacity apps then overseed. Probably best to wait until spring if you're in an area that gets below freezing.
Heya, Ginja! It's like you were talking directly to me....laying on the couch, with a quilt and a pillow, in sweat pants and flannel shirt. Thanks for the as always great vid, inspiration and tips. When the rain stops, I'll see if it dries enough to get rid of some debris, but will take advantage of the weather to get some fertilizer down before then. Two snowmen in the yard, one says, "Geez it's cold out here." The other says, "Holy crap! A talking snowman!"
I bought a dethatch rake. I have an acre. Life supremely sucked for 2 weeks last month. I am buying one of those electric dethatchers next spring. Don't get me wrong, the rake works really well, but it's for spot work or small lawns.
They're getting much better these days. the liquid air8 by next does a fantastic job. couple of things. on the first app i would recommend applying it with a quick release fertilizer. you'll also want to do continued applications monthly or every other month for best results. A one time service will not do what you would hope.
Try to control the watering as best as you can. Typical sign the area has excess moisture and or compaction. Start treating it with ferrous sulfate iron
What do we do when we got an early two day deep freeze with wind that shocked the grass to go yellow / light green and now over night temps are around 33 with daytime around 55. I think it may have gone dormant, do we cut or leave it at 2.75 inches?
Great videos as always. I just found this 12-0-12 on sale. But it doesn't say on the bag for lawn, it says flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs. Can I use it on lawn. Cool season grass. Thanks
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! I’ve been busting my arse for years trying to improve the lawn and have made some progress. After watching these videos, I bought a Sun Joe ❤️❤️, some aerating shoe attachments (not a huge yard-good exercise 😆) and the Groundskeeper II & put them to work this season. Definitely seeing a difference and optimistic for next year’s lawn. Thanks again
It's Ginja time! Hey if my lawn seems to have already have hit dormancy, cough cut too short too fast cough, should I still consider doing a recovery / last fertilization with fast nigtrogen or am I just dreaming at this point and should wait till springtime?
Great question Aaron. I would at the least focus on getting water in the soil so the roots will push. If you're in my area ground temps are still in the 50's during mid day and in my opinion wont get below 40 until after Thanksgiving. I would put down a similar solution if you still have another 5 weeks of growth like we do
Please help... I have a lot of stolons in my yard. I got a detatch rake and pulled up a lot of debris (filled up the compost can in one raking). I have a feeling I have to go through it again. What else can you recommend? Thanks
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks for your input. Wasnt sure if there was something I was doing wrong. Once Im comfortable with the dethatching, should I overseed? BTW, came across your channel by chance. Dig it!! Very informative and I like the way you dont make it boring...
I was just thinking to myself, “Self, what should I do with the lawn in the fall as it’s getting cooler but not quite winter yet?” And whaddyaknow, the Ginja delivers! That beard must provide mystical mind reading abilities! I’m ready to piss the neighbors off Ginja! By the way, you need to see my lawn! Virtually no weed in sight!
I commonly put it down every 4 weeks until the growing season is done. for my area its the first week of december or when the ground temps get permanently below 40 degrees.
You are so knowledgeable and brilliant. Love your videos and your easy to understand explanations. Great job, as always! What is your take on fertilizer with micronutrients?
GINJA!!! Should I as part of step 3 bag the clippings as temperatures start falling on low 50s and below since there's not much microbial activity to brake them down? What are your thoughts?
@@pestandlawnginja That's my thinking too, especially after all the debris I got out of the lawn this year. I'll say 12 to 15 passes with the sunjoe all together for the year. I have the Toro Super Recycler it does a good job but I would like to pulverize the clippings and leaves. I wish the made a gator blade for it. I'll start mulching when temps go up.
Good advice! My lawn is deep green right now and neighbors mostly all turning brown. It snows here in Washington but even so my lawn will keep growing slowly during mild periods through winter. Hate the snow, it’s very hard on my lawn.
Pest and Lawn Ginja I have a lawn care business and people will start blowing out sprinklers in early October and daytime temps still in the 70s. Sometimes, Im mowing lawns that are almost dust! It’s nuts. I’m blowing mine out next week.
Ginja what do you do about tree stumps that were ground down wood chips picked up soil put down but grass is still hard to grow reseeded and aeration done but grass is not back
Unfortunately the majority of those situation I visit require digging deeper, removing the wood chips and replacing it with soil a minimum 10". Sinking still occurs as the chips bio degrade and fungus is a common problem
Is it possible to mow too often? I have been mowing every 2 days to try and thick in it up but really it’s not growing very much. Ground temp is 63 degrees. 24hr average is 67 hi today 69 degrees low 36. We actually have one week of unheard of warm temps starting Monday between 80 and 90 degrees. I’m hoping if I put that 18-0-1 and the biostimulants right before that happens I’ll get a little more top growth to help thick in it up. I’ll also keep an eye on the watering.
Hi Maria! You can mow as often as you please. The ground temps being that low hinder the vigerous growth you'd commonly see when the temps are higher. using fertilizer to force a little growth is recommended during the cooler seasons to maintain.
Good stuff Ginja. What if im overseeding in September? I use a mix that doesn't have enough bluegrass in it so I wind up over seeding. What do you suggest I do then? Scarify, over seed and a slow release fertilizer or just fertilize later in October? Remember I live in a cold winter climate as well on long island
Hello Ginga !! I enjoy your videos immensely ! I recently mowed low and thatched my lawn ,heavily overseeded and dosed heavily with Milorganite . It’s been ten days and my lawn is growing like mad , should I still apply 7/4/14 ? I live in NY and I want to “ piss off my neighbors “ , thanks
sorry I saw this soo late. the boost of potassium is great for fall applications to help keep blade color. helps stiffin up the blades of the grass and helps keep the color for the cold weather times.
Awesome video as always. I’m a beginner when it comes to my lawn and have learned a lot from your videos. Been using the Scotts products and was wondering if their Wintergaurd would be ok since it is a 32-0-10 for my cool season grass? Temps have been in the high 50’s during the day.
tall fescue, does it turn yellow in the fall heading toward the winter? First time growing this variety. Have not probed for a soil test, so it may be a lack of nitro, but would like to know if the variety eventually turns that yellowish color in dormancy. I have rye in areas of shade that I do not see having that yellowing effect,....yet
depends on the type of tall fescue if it goes yellow in the winter. most perennial tall fescue goes dormant when the ground temps get below 45 degrees.
yes! The term winterized is a marketing term that is pretty meaningless. It was developed by scotts and was brilliant. most winterizers have lower amounts of nitrogen and higher amounts of potassium. if your temps are still in the 70's and the grass is still growing than I would highly recommend you continue mowing as usual.
Hey Ginga.. I've typically always maintained longer-ish grass (here in the Uk) over Winter with often not too many issues, so I was genuinely interested when you said to cut it shorter over Winter. I believe it as being beneficial with their being less sunlight available, so the larger grass blades can encourage more sunlight to convert into sugars to be stored over Winter. I'm not talking crazy long (the general mowing here is to mow short (most folks)).. but rather around 2 to 3 inches maximum.
Ginja, I overseeded recently so I'm running my sprinklers every 2 hours for a couple of minutes during the day. For the most part I am starting to see seeds germinate.
Good advice as always! I feel like I’m the only one in the neighborhood that does actual lawn clean up lol. Everyone else just lets piles of leaves sit all winter. I just hate cleaning them up in the spring that’s why. Haha! I put down 1.5lbs of N in the last 6 weeks. I think I’m good now going into winter hopefully lol. It’s getting down into the low 30’s at night and 50’s / low 60’s during the day. I’m tempted to put down another .25 of N yet but I’m afraid it’s too late. Growth has slowed quite a bit since our first frost last week.
Pest and Lawn Ginja yeah I was surprised. Fall pre em only went down a few weeks ago. And we are expecting snow next week I just hope it doesn’t stick around for very long. Better get that fert down tomorrow if I am going to do it I’m thinking. Should have at least a good 5 or 6 days before things turn for the worst. We’ll see, thanks for the advice!
Lots! however jimmy lewis did an entire series about his drought watering tips and did a fantastic job. check it out. it'll be a bit before I'm able to tackle that video.
Ginja, 2 parts my friend! 1. Does this fertilizer & 4 steps apply to my Virginia Zoysia grass around my house too? 2. ALSO will this apply to my 8 week old Tall Fescue seed & sod in the outer areas of my property? Thank you!
1. yes with some modifications. The main thing is zoysia needs to be verticut in the spring time to remove lawn debris. The rest applies but the fall app should be done as ground temps start to dip below 60. 2. do a .15lbs N to that newly seed / sod fescue. it's going to be a bit sensitive that young.
@@pestandlawnginja Ginja, you're awesome! 1. Say... Does 0.15lb N mean 0.15lbs per 1000sq-ft or 100sq-ft ? 2. Ok my brother, so 8 weeks ago when I layed the Fescue seed, I applied 10-10-10. BUT NOW (and between new top soil and extensive Harley Rake reshaping of hills/holes in my outter areas) my baby grass has various weeds. I even found patchs of "smallish clover-like weeds" creeping in from a neighbor yard. When I lay that 0.15lb N on my baby grass, MAY I ALSO SPRAY HERBICIDE OVER IT? Which Herbicide is best? On my Zoysia area I used the TZone SE, Quinclorac 75 DF, with MSO formula... OR Maybe... Tenacity (which I'll keep away from the Zoysia grass) if you think its best for the outter area Tall Fescue??? I'll order which ever you recommend! :-)
@@pestandlawnginja So cool, I look up a new lawn word... "Verticut" (I'm becoming a Ginja Ninja haha)! So that's a special vertical mowing machine to remove my Zoysia thatch buildup so my grass can breathe and absorb nutrients! :-) After I saw your test, I bought the lil "SunJoe Scarifier/dethatcher" and used it (with the spring dethatch drum installed) along with aerating before spraying the Herbicide in August. This coming spring do you think the SunJoe with the Scarifier blade drum installed would do the same finction? MEANWHILE, I'll find a rental Verticut machine for spring.. And being a beginner Ginja Ninja I'll be sure to thoroughly clean it before using it to keep other users weeds, fungus and "stuff" out of my lawn!!!
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you! I sure don't want to harm my newly seeded Fescue areas... we're now at week 9 after seeding and its looking good except for the weeds. 👍
Great video. Thanks for the info! Question.. after thatching and aerating going into fall, is something like Scott’s weed and feed ok to use? New house.. lawn is overrun with various kinds of weeds.
Hey ginja!! I have few questions I have various types of grass i dont know wich they are i live in TN, i would like to know if i can start to treat it right know at fall, detach and reseed, i sprayed spectrum for crabgrass and clovers and still the same, what are the steps to prepare and reseed the lawn for the next spring?? Thanks
general rule of thumb is when you apply an herbicide you should wait 2 weeks before seeding. you also want to avoid using pre emergents since they disrupt the germination. the only exception to this rule is a chemical called tenacity. I have a video called ultimate lawn fix that goes through this process in detail! Keep slaying that lawn
I just got a greensmaster 1000 and took the HOC down to 1/2" from 1.5" today. There is a lot of melting out. Should I throw down some Simplot 14-10-6-5fe to get some growth before the ground freezes? I'm in southern Utah county?
The winter will kill off the melting out. If it were me I would run a power rake asap then put the fertilizer down. Ground temps are hovering in the upper 40's to the low 50's. Still have some opportunity to get some results and help set the tone for next season.
@@pestandlawnginja In my front yard i found I had grubs a few weeks ago. I didn't cut that down to .5 in fear that there would be dirt spots everywhere. Also the roots are extremely shallow where chucks of grass will pull up if I use the thatch/debri rake. I put down Sevin and sprayed permethrin in hopes of killing the grubs. My question is, should I run my sunjoe over the front yard too? I fear it would tear up chucks of grass where the grubs created the damage.
If you have grub damage the sun joe will tear it a new one. I would focus on controlling the grubs and getting the roots established. get a 10.10.10 fertilizer and some milky spore and start introducing active preventive measures.
Great stuff as always! Hey, all I have is an aerator(spike/blade type) I pull behind the tractor (lawn mower) will this do the job for a Georgia clayish soil before fertilizer ? It’s a new lawn seeded with Bermuda back in May this year.
Be careful not to do a full app of a 60% sop! I would apply it max to a 17%. The milo isn't going to push well this time of the year unless your ground temps are above 55 to 60 degrees in my opinion.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks. I've learned this year to definitely pay attention to those labels. The SOP I have is actually Southern AG 0-0-50. The instructions say if it is the only fert being used, go 4lbs/1000sqft. However if it's being used with other ferts, go with 1lb/1000sqft. The latter should suffice for the winter and the K deficiency?
@@pestandlawnginja Sweet. I think I'll go half rate at 2lbs/1000sqft. I just wanted to try and use what I have left instead of buying another product. There is another fert I have that is called Purely Organic Lawn Food that is 10-0-2.
GINJA I have watch your 5 step video (and many more) i have Bermuda (Dallas TX) and i have the 3 type of crabgrass with the veins through the blade. Now I’m on overload. Is there any way you can be contacted directly to maybe do a FaceTime video and show my lawn and see what I might need right now. I need your lawn!! 😂
How do I get rid of all the damn weeds I have in my lawn this year. Super dry out west this year and the weeds are out of control. I water, mow, aeriate, fertilize, etc.
you'll need an herbicide that kills weeds and not the grass. the type of herbicide you'll want will depend on the target weeds you're trying to kill and the type of grass you have.
Master Ginja, Is now a good time to put down additional soil in areas of dead spots (been dead all summer)? Plus, laying down some seeds within the new soil. I was thinking of buying two cubic yards and spreading it out between the grass. Especially where there is some bald or dead areas.
seeding is over for sure. My seed didn't even budge and I planted 3 weeks ago. I knew it was going to be late but I have no issues trashing my lawn to fix it again hahaha. I would hold off until spring and save yourself the mess that won't go away for months.
should one fungicide treat the lawn AFTER a frost? at that point in the season with dropping temps, should one stop fungicide apps? Activity drops or stops at what temp?Great vids very good vocals
Frost will commonly kill fungus, type depending. It's not necessary to treat with a fungicide after a hard frost. Its commonly the stagnant water that causes the problems.
As always an awesome video but it’s making me feel down because the end of the growing season is almost here, no more mows 😭😭😭. I’ll have your videos on a loop all winter 😁. I know I’m not the only one already looking forward to spring 2020

What use your opinion of ifa's 4 step program? Their fall mix fits your criteria.

You sir have a very bad lawn addiction!!😂😂
I hate mowing my lawn..but I do like it to be green. So I hire it cut..and fertilize it myself.
Thanks for all the tips pal..very helpful.😁👌👍
Sometimes you gotta love the lawn hahaha. I had to learn how to enjoy the mow.
Learned alot keep up your great job, looking forward to your next video, awesome.
Thanks for watching! Video is up!
I overseeded/planted tall fescue in early Sept., and have cut three times so far. Would it be safe to put down my urea around the first week of Nov. as long as I follow label on bag ? Thank you
If you do do a super light dose. I like to wait 8 to 12 weeks before doing anything above .25lbs n per 1000 sq ft
Ginja what determines when to stop watering completely for the year/season. Is it a particular soil temperature or ambient temperatures that approach freezing?
Colder it gets the less humidity. I still recommend monitoring the soil over the winter and spot watering as necessary
I’m going into week 3 of overseeding…. What can I do prep my lawn for the winter months ?
i wouldn't stress much. you can micro feed fertilizer every 4 weeks at 1/8th lbs of N per 1000 sqft.
Right on time with some needed INFO BEFORE we put the new RTF to sleep thanks GINGA , ITS BEEN A REAL FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SPRING PAL THANKS FOR ALL.
Thanks for the kind words Grassthief!
Here is what's happening:
1. Lawn was bombarded with crabgrass this summer as well as "other stuff like clover, etc."
2. I pulled out all the crabgrass with Fiskars weed puller. I bought top soil and refilled all the divots left by pulling out crab grass.
3. I have a dethatching rake and am now doing that myself
Lawn looks great Ginja 😁😁
LoL not bad for a train wreck.
Should I seed first before fertilizing and how much time should I wait in between if I’m using the propeat
you can fertilize anytime. if you seed and fertilize you need to calculate the amount of nitrogen to be 1/8lbs of N or less.
Dude! Your videos are always packed with a great amount of information!!! 🀄️
Thanks!!! That's what it's all about! Slaying lawns across america by educating one lawn ninja at a time!
What are you doing for beard care over winter?
I mowed low
Heya, Ginja! It's like you were talking directly to me....laying on the couch, with a quilt and a pillow, in sweat pants and flannel shirt.
Thanks for the as always great vid, inspiration and tips. When the rain stops, I'll see if it dries enough to get rid of some debris, but will take advantage of the weather to get some fertilizer down before then.
Two snowmen in the yard, one says, "Geez it's cold out here."
The other says, "Holy crap! A talking snowman!"
Dad Joke king! You the man! Glad you liked the video
I bought a dethatch rake. I have an acre. Life supremely sucked for 2 weeks last month. I am buying one of those electric dethatchers next spring. Don't get me wrong, the rake works really well, but it's for spot work or small lawns.
OMG hahahaha, that would have sucked!!!! been there done that. My body was dead for a month
My car isn't large enough for a bulky heavy aerator rental. Am thinking about using a liquid aerator. Thoughts?
They're getting much better these days. the liquid air8 by next does a fantastic job. couple of things. on the first app i would recommend applying it with a quick release fertilizer. you'll also want to do continued applications monthly or every other month for best results. A one time service will not do what you would hope.
Great voice control
Thanks!
I'm ready to piss the neighbors off Ginja! Super informative four steps that even I can follow.
Yes! Go slay that lawn!
for fungicide application, strobe 50wg or heritage granular? both same, ever have luck with either?
strobe is a dual acting fungicide with two modes of action. It'll hit it faster. I've used them both and prefer the strobe
When should you dethatch in the fall? Should you throw down pre-emergent afterwards?
anytime during the growing season is fine. pre emergent late summer is a good idea
Great information mister Ginja. Any recommend for moss. Thanks again mister Ginja. I enjoy you videos.
Try to control the watering as best as you can. Typical sign the area has excess moisture and or compaction. Start treating it with ferrous sulfate iron
Thank you so much again I really appreciate it. Thanks for share your time with all of us.
You're welcome! Have a great day!
What do we do when we got an early two day deep freeze with wind that shocked the grass to go yellow / light green and now over night temps are around 33 with daytime around 55. I think it may have gone dormant, do we cut or leave it at 2.75 inches?
Measure the ground temps. You'll find your answer there.
Already Pissing them Off thanks for the tips
You the man Michael! Keep it up!
Great videos as always.
I just found this 12-0-12 on sale. But it doesn't say on the bag for lawn, it says flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs. Can I use it on lawn. Cool season grass. Thanks
yes you can. fertilizer is fertilizer.
Hi.. we are in NC around Greensboro. We just aerated, seeded, lime, fertilizer. What is the next step? Plan on watering on 9/21/20...thx
awesome to hear you're on the lawn! sounds like you're doing great. the seed just needs to stay wet for a minimum 2 to 3 weeks.
Thanks again
awesome Rosemary! Keep slaying that lawn
Should i dethatch or use the scarafier? When do you put down pre-e? My lawn is going to domacy in So California
I would scarify it and use some annual rye grass and push some new growth for the winter.
Is there a product you can just recommend because I’m not a lawn guru and I need simple solution.
10-0-10 by ProPeat
It's Ginja time!
Hey if my lawn seems to have already have hit dormancy, cough cut too short too fast cough, should I still consider doing a recovery / last fertilization with fast nigtrogen or am I just dreaming at this point and should wait till springtime?
Great question Aaron. I would at the least focus on getting water in the soil so the roots will push. If you're in my area ground temps are still in the 50's during mid day and in my opinion wont get below 40 until after Thanksgiving. I would put down a similar solution if you still have another 5 weeks of growth like we do
Are these fertilizing steps for cool season grass or warm season?
It's both. However I see your point that warm season grasses go dormant when soil temps get below 55 degrees
Please do a video on late fall application and winterizing.
awesome. appreciate the idea.
Great Vid! I see a big different in my lawn this season! This inspired me to start making videos, on my Kentucky bluegrass! ♻️
That is awesome! Slay that lawn brother!
Please help... I have a lot of stolons in my yard. I got a detatch rake and pulled up a lot of debris (filled up the compost can in one raking). I have a feeling I have to go through it again. What else can you recommend? Thanks
Just be patient Jose and keep going! I had a neighbor and we pulled out 6 trash cans full of debris out of her tiny front lawn. Debris happens.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks for your input. Wasnt sure if there was something I was doing wrong. Once Im comfortable with the dethatching, should I overseed? BTW, came across your channel by chance. Dig it!! Very informative and I like the way you dont make it boring...
Yes! Once the thatch is out an overseed does the lawn well!
Yes! Let's do this week! Just bug the crap outta me hahaha.

@@hino823 only if you're going to replace the plugs with sand and push it down the holes. otherwise leave the plugs.
I live in Minneapolis MN, cold weather during the year I mulch my grass, is it ok to just aerate, over seed, then fertilize?
How often do you use fertilizer in fall? Once, twice? Please advise. Great video. Thanks!
I commonly put it down every 4 weeks until the growing season is done. for my area its the first week of december or when the ground temps get permanently below 40 degrees.
Looking good as always!
Thanks brett!
You are so knowledgeable and brilliant. Love your videos and your easy to understand explanations. Great job, as always! What is your take on fertilizer with micronutrients?
LOVE fertilizer with micronutrients. best source for rooting grass.
These are best practicing whether or not you’re overseeing or applying pre-emergent correct?
yes.
what do you reccomend for the weeds , I have a well so I want to keep it safe.
my water supply is very important.
Great video!!
thank you,

I prefer speedzone and t-zone
Awesome tips, really enjoy your channel
Thanks Jeremy! appreciate you watching and commenting.
Awesome thanks Ginja!
You're welcome!
GINJA!!! Should I as part of step 3 bag the clippings as temperatures start falling on low 50s and below since there's not much microbial activity to brake them down? What are your thoughts?
depends on how fine of a mulch you can get. I prefer to bag.
I hear that. Mulching is fantastic when it's done properly
Great information
Thanks for watching Leonard!

Good advice! My lawn is deep green right now and neighbors mostly all turning brown. It snows here in Washington but even so my lawn will keep growing slowly during mild periods through winter. Hate the snow, it’s very hard on my lawn.
Yes! Well done. Sounds like they could use some lawn ninja advice!
Pest and Lawn Ginja I have a lawn care business and people will start blowing out sprinklers in early October and daytime temps still in the 70s. Sometimes, Im mowing lawns that are almost dust! It’s nuts. I’m blowing mine out next week.
It is nuts! We have the same problem in my area. Tiny bit of water goes a long way. Never mind that it thickens the lawn and helps preserve water 😂😂😂
You should look into doing hand modeling on the side. Cheers Ginja
😂😂😂 why thank you.
You noticed that too!
You should.
Maybe study to a Jackoffologist.. You have the hands for it
If I am going to aerate then overseed and was gonna put a top dressing of soul do I need to put peat moss as well?
no you don't have to top dress but it helps a ton.
I just found this! Great info
Glad it was helpful!
Glad to see you made a fall video! 10k views already!!! lets gooooooo, sharing this video with my fam
Thanks bro!
Another one to try,,, " Outlaws" Green grass and high tides.
Awesome suggestion! Tha is for commenting Dennis
I'd start in late august early september
It's totally fine! Now go slay that lawn
tall fescue, does it turn yellow in the fall heading toward the winter? First time growing this variety. Have not probed for a soil test, so it may be a lack of nitro, but would like to know if the variety eventually turns that yellowish color in dormancy. I have rye in areas of shade that I do not see having that yellowing effect,....yet
depends on the type of tall fescue if it goes yellow in the winter. most perennial tall fescue goes dormant when the ground temps get below 45 degrees.
Can I cut my lawn even though I winterized last week? The temps here are in the 70s (Ohio)
As long as you're getting adequate water and sunlight with no winter dormancy you're logic is sound
@@pestandlawnginja wow thanks for the quick reply! So at the point of dormancy youd aim for a shorter lawn to reduce chances of disease . Thanks 😊
Ginja, I overseeded recently so I'm running my sprinklers every 2 hours for a couple of minutes during the day. For the most part I am starting to see seeds germinate.
Rad! Well on your way to slaying that lawn!
Nice stripes you got going there!😎👍
Not bad for 7 day old stripes hahaha
What’s the latest I can aerate in Minnesota?
until the ground temps get below 40 degrees.
Never too late. Check the ground temps. You might be surprised. Let me know what you find. Measure 3" under the soil
Pest and Lawn Ginja I just measured 57 degrees ground temp (varying a bit between 56 and 58 but close enough).
That's pretty high!
You're welcome! Glad we know what's happening in the soil so you can move forward!
Got any drought watering tips Mr Ginja?
Lots! however jimmy lewis did an entire series about his drought watering tips and did a fantastic job. check it out. it'll be a bit before I'm able to tackle that video.
Ginja,
2 parts my friend!
@@pestandlawnginja
Ginja, you're awesome!
@@pestandlawnginja
So cool, I look up a new lawn word... "Verticut" (I'm becoming a Ginja Ninja haha)!
So that's a special vertical mowing machine to remove my Zoysia thatch buildup so my grass can breathe and absorb nutrients! :-)
After I saw your test, I bought the lil "SunJoe Scarifier/dethatcher" and used it (with the spring dethatch drum installed) along with aerating before spraying the Herbicide in August.
This coming spring do you think the SunJoe with the Scarifier blade drum installed would do the same finction?
MEANWHILE, I'll find a rental Verticut machine for spring..
And being a beginner Ginja Ninja I'll be sure to thoroughly clean it before using it to keep other users weeds, fungus and "stuff" out of my lawn!!!
per 1000 sq ft. I would avoid spraying any herbicide for a minimum 6 weeks. It'll stunt the growth of the new grass.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you! I sure don't want to harm my newly seeded Fescue areas... we're now at week 9 after seeding and its looking good except for the weeds. 👍
hey Ginja can I use a starter fert or winter fert
starter fert for winter fert is a great option.
Great video. Thanks for the info! Question.. after thatching and aerating going into fall, is something like Scott’s weed and feed ok to use? New house.. lawn is overrun with various kinds of weeds.
totally fine to do it that way
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching Brian!
Hey ginja!! I have few questions
I have various types of grass i dont know wich they are i live in TN, i would like to know if i can start to treat it right know at fall, detach and reseed, i sprayed spectrum for crabgrass and clovers and still the same, what are the steps to prepare and reseed the lawn for the next spring??
Thanks
general rule of thumb is when you apply an herbicide you should wait 2 weeks before seeding. you also want to avoid using pre emergents since they disrupt the germination. the only exception to this rule is a chemical called tenacity.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks Ginja, you're the man!
Should do fine! I prefer the tines to be 3/4" in diameter with a plug depth of 3"
Good video man, lawn is looking good! Question, is it worthwhile doing a pre emergent blanket spray at this time in PA?
only if you use a pre emergent like prodiamine that will overwinter.
Good video! For a winterizer fert, could I apply Milorganite 6-4-0 and also a app of SOP 0-0-60?
Be careful not to do a full app of a 60% sop! I would apply it max to a 17%. The milo isn't going to push well this time of the year unless your ground temps are above 55 to 60 degrees in my opinion.
@@pestandlawnginja Thanks. I've learned this year to definitely pay attention to those labels. The SOP I have is actually Southern AG 0-0-50. The instructions say if it is the only fert being used, go 4lbs/1000sqft. However if it's being used with other ferts, go with 1lb/1000sqft. The latter should suffice for the winter and the K deficiency?
Its assuming you have k in the fertilizer you're using. Either of those rates are reasonable
@@pestandlawnginja Sweet. I think I'll go half rate at 2lbs/1000sqft. I just wanted to try and use what I have left instead of buying another product. There is another fert I have that is called Purely Organic Lawn Food that is 10-0-2.
Cool man! Good luck!
GINJA
I have watch your 5 step video (and many more) i have Bermuda (Dallas TX) and i have the 3 type of crabgrass with the veins through the blade. Now I’m on overload. Is there any way you can be contacted directly to maybe do a FaceTime video and show my lawn and see what I might need right now. I need your lawn!! 😂
Feel free to send pics over facebook
How do
I get rid of all the damn weeds I have in my lawn this year. Super dry out west this year and the weeds are out of control. I water, mow, aeriate, fertilize, etc.
you'll need an herbicide that kills weeds and not the grass. the type of herbicide you'll want will depend on the target weeds you're trying to kill and the type of grass you have.
Really want to get propeat but can't find it anywhere
It is a great product. You may wanna give them a call or email and let them know you saw my video
Master Ginja, Is now a good time to put down additional soil in areas of dead spots (been dead all summer)? Plus, laying down some seeds within the new soil. I was thinking of buying two cubic yards and spreading it out between the grass. Especially where there is some bald or dead areas.
If you have 6 weeks of grow left without a hard freeze you could pull it off!
@@pestandlawnginja Or, would it be best to just do this in the spring? I'm in SLC like you.
I'm in no rush.
seeding is over for sure. My seed didn't even budge and I planted 3 weeks ago. I knew it was going to be late but I have no issues trashing my lawn to fix it again hahaha. I would hold off until spring and save yourself the mess that won't go away for months.
Hey hey lawn ginja thanks for the tips
You're so welcome! Have a great day!
should one fungicide treat the lawn AFTER a frost? at that point in the season with dropping temps, should one stop fungicide apps? Activity drops or stops at what temp?Great vids very good vocals
Frost will commonly kill fungus, type depending. It's not necessary to treat with a fungicide after a hard frost. Its commonly the stagnant water that causes the problems.
As always an awesome video but it’s making me feel down because the end of the growing season is almost here, no more mows 😭😭😭. I’ll have your videos on a loop all winter 😁. I know I’m not the only one already looking forward to spring 2020
Hahaha love it! Loop away please! I'm not looking forward to the end
Oh boy have I got some news for YOU a year ago...
Hi Ginja, When is the latest time (soil temp) to add fertilizer?
For me it's around 45 to 50 degrees. technically you can successfully do 40 to 45
When u talk about 40 degrees is it night time or daytime
soil temps at 3" down
