That bike is, as we say down South, "done all used up".
Run hard, put away wet, and left for Joe to rebuild.
4:00 These bikes have an accelerator pump in the carb that squirts a jet of fuel down into the intake when you twist the throttle. They'll normally fire right up when cold if you give it 2 throttle blips, choke it, and the DON"T TOUCH THE THROTTLE ANYMORE! Blipping the throttle like 20 times like that just flooded the bike and ruined any chance of it starting.
Yep, I thought same thing, he did it like 30 x ;o))
Yeah, then the plug gets all wet and it's just too wet inside there over all. Usually let it stand for a moment or help it evaporate the gas off by taking the plug out for a while.
You are right but it wouldn't help on this engine because the crank is F**ked!
This guy does it with every 4 stroke, you think he would learn.. he floods them to hell and makes a 10 minute video of him just kicking.
I believe this was 2 stroke ...though??@@julesjan4019
You lost me when you pulled out a big crescent wrench to remove the main jet.
51:09 for anyone watching who needs to know, those dished valves are Titanium. Ti valves are "soft" but have a hard coating/plating. When the plating wears through on the valve seat area, they sink into the valve seats quickly and need extremely frequent adjustments.
Replace them immediately when their clearance gets tight.
Can they be replaced by steel ones then?
@@YouriCarma yes. But the springs are rated for the weight of the valve. As far as I know they're marked with a colored paint. So you would need the correct springs for heavier steel valves
Yup, that's the first thing I replaced when I bought a non-runner CRF450.
Titanium is not "soft". People have no clue.
@@michi_danksta Ti valves certainly don't last as long as steel valves.
Joe you have a right leg that makes the hulk jealous!
I'm just here for Vinny. He's the real star of the show.
Vinnie with the zoomies lol
Vinnie is awesome
He should start selling "Vinnie for President" t-shirts!
Think vinny hs put water in his tank😂
Good thing you gave that crank another look. Very thorough! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the rebuild. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
If memory serves, you picked up the Kawi/Suzuki collaboration bike. Sorry to inform you, but these were ticking time bombs. They overheat if you sit idling for more than three minutes, and the engines were crapola. Whatever you do, don't even fart near this bike because something is bound to fall off of it. 🤷🏻♂️
No they don't 😂😂.
its the worst watercooled japanese 4 stroke dirt bikes ever made... very bad engines with cooling problems and bad coating on the soft valves. the intake valve on this bike that was tight is worn out even, thats why it was so tight. Also lacks power and had bad frames... @@jerrywilcox9890
Yes you are absolutely right, I hope he see your comment and stop wasting his time.
I have memory that it was something about some kind of a oveheating sensor inside the CDI🤔Could be wrong..
He should in any case never bought this bike
@@gladeamatoren7106 Everyone I knew at the track had to buy oversized radiators, or these bikes wouldn't make it through an entire moto without heat-seizing. The repairs were astronomical even if you did them yourself. Overall, these were total junk. I feel bad for him for getting involved with one of these turds.
On point. That is what it is.
Man you are patient and persistant two qualities i aint got loll great work
Nice! Joe posted another video. Greetings from the Netherlands.🙂
Sounding like you’re getting over a cold and yet still hard at work. Love the commitment joe. Great video.
I love your videos so much man I’ve been watching since 9K you came up really enjoy your videos man every video that comes out I’m at my desk invested thank you for killing so much time and giving me entertainment. Love your videos man.
Up all-night 91 has good videos too
Great find and as always very informative video Joe, I just purchased a roller starter and this thing is great- no more breaking your leg kickstarting a hundred times lol - also picked up my 24 300rx Beta yesterday - today we start race prepping 🏁 thank you for all the videos and experiences you share with us Joe- people doing this at home seems to be disappearing in this age - thank you
If I could get Joe to make one change it would be to get him to stop scraping the bottom of carb bowls with the metal screw driver. That and draining coolant into oil....
Don't forget using the accelerator pump a thousand times.
@bramvermaat1453 Or running starters until the battery is dead 😂
If you kick something that many times by the time you get it started, you’re gonna break the kick starter shaft and then you’ll replace it
It's apparent in your voice that your allergies are still not back to normal. But, yet you are still out there buying bikes and fixing them. 😎. Now in regards to kicking the life out of the bike in hopes it will start. We've all done it and still do it to this day. My right leg has been bigger than my left leg for as long as I can remember. Keep up the great content. 👍
You don't sound so hot today Joe. Hope you get feeling better soon. Thanks for letting us hang out in your garage today.
Yet another throwaway 4-stroke MX bike. Joe, you have the patience of a saint working on these things, excellent job! Good call on that connecting rod bearing being junk also. Thanks man!
Always look forward to new video's on this channel.... I've been buying older bikes and repairing them since watching your video's. Joe you make it so methodical and easy From Australia...
It looks like someone installed a internal smoke machine on that bike. Crazy amounts of smoke! Awesome video!
Another great video, Joe! Glad you caught that rod bearing!
What a cracking bit of kit Joe,love these things supa rare!👌👊💯
$400 for the parts you need isn't too bad. Thanks for this video, Joe!
You are amazing. Love these teardown vids. Bringing bikes back to life.
Just keep doing what your doing. Awesome honest work you do. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Joe sounds sick today. Get well
He had a sinus infection a few days back.
Joe the amount of times you struggle with taking those carbs out the way you do , your better off removing the subframe and do it that way
I love it when he struggles for 10 minutes instead of taking 3 minutes to take the seat off and move the subframe.
Also risking damaging potentially delicate intake manifold. Just take the extra few min bro.
Really enjoying the content! Keep em coming!!
Whenever Joe says piston rings may be stuck I'm smh like no Joe you always say that 😂
2vintage: youtubes own starter tester. Hours of fun in every video
Hope your cold gets better joy. Vinny needs a sweater! Love the dirt bike vids!
you should send him one ladyjedi3D
Can you make a video about what you do with all of the machines after you fix them? keep, Sell, Trade? Thanks.
They're all sitting in his garage😂 nobody with half a brain would buy something from him
They're all sitting in his garage. Nobody in the right mind would buy a machine from him
@@mostlymotorized???
@@mostlymotorized... really easy to bad mouth people online, any idiot can do it :)
Good looking cycle. Every bike is a new adventure. Thanks for your hard work. Take care of yourself
So you're gonna rebuild the crank with a new rod on this one huh. I figured you'd find a good used crank. Can't wait to see the follow up video on this bike. 10 out of 10 and 2 thumbs up on your channel. Keep the videos uh coming lol.
I have a 2004 DRZ 250 that I’m working on getting the carb tuned. Having carb issues but should be able to rejet it and get it running great. Cool find!
Always look forward to your videos!
Hey man, I really enjoy your channel; you do great stuff. Please, keep it coming.
Just an FYI: it looks like the rear rim is bent on this bike, on the right side. Probably straightenable with a torch and a wood block, but just trying to help.
Again: keep up the great work!
Ryan I love your videos, I have been watching you for a long time. It’s funny to you you have evolved from a mechanic to a teacher. Keep it up I love your stuff.
His name isn't Ryan is it??
Joe
@@joshballou8432 joe mama
If my bike doesn't start on the second kick I start looking at why.
I don’t understand why you do some things..
1 when you get a bike that’s been sitting always pull the air filter first make sure nothing is in intake boot .
2 when you pull the carb pull the bottom to subframe bolts and muffler bolts and swing the subframe up to get it out.
3 do leak down test instead of compression test.
Joe great video I learn a little something every time. Thanks
Nice job Joe. Good find in that crank. You got that press so just make you a crank trueing stand to balance it back out and rebuild it yourself. Once you do a few you'll see their really not that hard and you'll save yourself a lot of money on a hole crank in the long run unless you really need to replace one of the sides but a pin a bearing are cheap and easy to replace. 😉😉😉
Its really not that bad I would have just done rings and new gasket. Good for another 100 hours then I might do the rod, piston and rings.
@@kristiankitsch6976 could of been a new crank that was in it and the journals we dropped or the gap was to tight be either way you gotta pull the crank to fix it and if you're already there you might as well split that case before you waist money and do the same job twice
Great content as usual. Look forward to seeing it fixed 👍🏻
Hey there my name is Marc love watching you work on the different bikes an helps me learn more about them as the wife watches her tv shows keep up the good work. I Ben in to bikes sence I was 12years old now I am 66years still love to ride them have a Chinese 4strock 250 just a little heavy not as strong as my young days an gotton a little father in my belly hehee beer. Like to go ride around but don't get to go to much we're I live have to travel to a good place to ride keep up the good work Marc.
Hey your exhaust (silencer) on there, Pro Circuit T-4 Slip On. The Kawasaki KX 250 F and the Suzuki RM-Z 250 you’ve got here, always paired well with that particular exhaust system. A lot of guys would run the full kit for a couple horse power. The slip on didn’t provide as much but still a bit extra than stock. Not to mention a great sound 👍👍
Great video as always. It's fun to watch u problem solve. Hope u feel well soon.❤
Same thing happened on rm85 i bought. It had the hot rod crank. Bearing trying to exit cage. Luckily the bike didnt start and mess things up like rm did.
Don’t know where the bip sounds is coming from, but it makes me fall asleep when I watch your videos, I got to watch it in 2 shots.
Great! videos my bro robin here from sweden. You sounds like a little bit cold today?. Keep Up The Good Spirit my friend 🥰🥰🥰
This man could fill a quarry with all his marketplace finds. Well done sir.
Good catch! You’ll have it going in no time.
Can you do a video on a seized engine you explain everything very well and I’d love to see your process
Great video! Amazing about the rod bearing - terrific that you went back and checked it again! I'm curious about that carb. It has what looks like a throttle position sensor. What is that?
Same symptoms as the buried bike.🫤
Love your videos man
Get your self a baking pan or pizza pan for doing carbs. Hand down I love it
Love watching your videos! You definitely don't seem to have any luck though every time you think its going to be something simple its a total rebuild. Have to say that is why I never got into race bikes they are made to run the snot out of them and most people do. Usually if its something simple someone is going to have already done it or they are going to pass it off.
Hey Joe! That is going to be a sweet bike once completed! You are really motivating me to start saving and get another dirt bike! It's always so interesting watching and learning from your videos. Keep up the great work!!
Awesome find Joe, after watching you I want to start flipping bikes as well.
@@USMichigunPrepperthey definitely aren't
@@Underground-Electronic-Music I'm not trying to make a ton off of this, just wanna make it a hobby that pays for itself
Main reason i subscribe to this channel I love seeing these old bikes come back ti life and get some love. One question where do all these bikes go once you get them all back up and running? Just wondering. You truly have some amazing talent. Wish you was my neighbor. Thanks for the post love wondering what you will come up with next
Pretty sure he sells them
Love your videos man! The attention to detail, patience and explanation of your processes are great! Keep up the great work! Watching from Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦
I used to race dirt bikes when I was in high school miss it got hurt lost my job a few years back and now I can’t afford to get another bike but one day I will just hope it’s soon I’m back working and makin money but damn it’s gone just as soon as I get it 😒😩
Oooh a steel frame one - nice. Bike looks really good for it's age. Good job man. That rear wheel is trash tho. Can be quite expensive to replace.
hey man i had the same problem check for any intake leaks and you should give that filter a clean maybe it ain’t starting cause of to much dirt bike in filter and i recommend you spray some starting fluid down the carb and should get her running back
Ever think about building one of those electric starters with rollers on the floor that spin the back tire? Would make a killer video for your channel! I’m a retired certified small engine mechanic and got my first Elsinore 125 in 1980
🤘🤪🎸
I knew the crank was chalked when I heard it pop over, (sounded tight)I though you was going to miss it, glad you didn’t
Dude you love to kick the life out of these bikes when there clearly not gona start. Why don't you get an easy start that spins the back wheel over. So much easier.
Because that's for women.
@@AShearer76 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Because he doesn't sit to pee. Like you don.
@@AShearer76Have you seen the newest bikes? Electric start on everything but Suzukis. The sport is quickly becoming pussified.
@thatlifted_85 awwww oooshh I don't mind a posh piss every now an again, what's wrong with that?lol.
The guy from Dirt bike TV definitely suggests if you’re going buy an older dirt bike to fix up, to avoid 4-strokes, as they’re just too expensive to bring back to life. You should start avoiding 4-strokes. They s**k anyway.
Boy you need to take compression tester with you when you're buying had lots bad luck lately. on bright side plenty content good luck 😊
Just an idea. I would like if you didn’t post a video until the project is done so it’s a series from start to finish. I have a hard time keeping up with what project you’re working on. Obviously it would kind of suck for stuff like the RX1 but I could really get into a build more if I could just watch the whole thing in a week or so. Just a suggestion from me but it’s not my channel. I’m addicted to your channel for some reason lol
Get the vinster to check the silencer for a stuck mouse !!!!! 😂❤
This era of RM/KX models do not have the best reputation. These bikes were produced (in a rush) as a collaboration effort
between Suzuki(motor) and Kawasaki(chassis). So there's that.🤪
It was mostly kawis design
Hey Joe, I’ve been watching your vids for years now and Ik you can make a rock run if your really tried so I figured I ask you. I got a 1998 300ex (has reverse) with some issues. I cannot get it to spark and I’m absolutely stumped. Timing is correct, new cdi, new stator, new rectifier, new (used) inhibitor box because it’s discontinued, new coil, spark plug, starter, key switch, kill switch and electric start module, and even a whole new wiring harness. I’ve done my best to check everything over, clean grounding surfaces and make sure it’s all good but I got nothing. If you can think of anything let me know. I love watching the vids as you do a very good job. Thanks
Joe brother, all that kick starting is going to come back and haunt you later down the line.
As I own a bunch of bikes, quads, tractors.., I made my own spin start that uses the back tire in high gear to spin the engine(s) over, saving not only my feet and legs from later agony, but it's easier on the ole "family jewels" as well😊😅😂
I think Amazon and Ebay Motors sell the spin starts as well; I often will use an Impact drill with a cog wheel to start the bikes.., also.
Great video, and good seeing your "Master Mechanic" Vinny too.
Allan in freezing Cut Bank, Montana
Once you stop kicking starting bikes is when you start getting old lol
@@Underground-Electronic-Music it keeps you young lol
@@Underground-Electronic-Music I'm just kidding around, the same as people saying that once you stop jacking up your trailer, you get old lol
exhaust is a fmf titanium early 2000s model. hard hard hard to find!! i got one myself on my 03 crf450. very hard pipe to find!
Four strokes choke on no throttle fire's up goes to high idle, idle will slow down then shut choke off then use the throttle
That’s insane that you have to remove the tank to get to the spark plug! Wow.
You are the kicking king 💯💯💪
Love Your Channel.
Good video bud.
Buying older 4 strokes is a risky business as they always have valve and cylinder issues and a proper rebuild always exceeds the value of the bike, especially that model, the cam lobes were in surprisingly good condition but you should replace the valves as mostlymotorized mentioned.
Your spidey sense for finding problems is extraordinary. I think most would have thought the crank was good and then rebuilt the engine only to have to tear it down again.
I like the hard ones you seem to be on top of most repairs.
I do remember the or you buried that you gave up , on wonder if y’all dig it up.
Looks like a hmf exhaust 🤔
I second that. The old style one
I completely agree, knew HMF soon as saw it. Pretty sure
A little starting fluid {ether} and pop starting it {pushing and then popping the clutch while in gear} might have gotten it running. And if it was merely stuck rings, getting it running and warmed up would have unstuck them. Something to think about for future attempted starting iterations on unknown ring status.
Joe heat up the Mystery oil to aid in loosening stuck rings. 185°F
Great Chanel great build 🇬🇧 😊
Love the show! Do 2021 Polaris sportsman 570 atv's have fuel filters? cant believe i cant find it. thanks
Another excellent video
I would check compression with cams out and timing. Chain off would give u a Tru compression reading
Joe you could do with one of those Paddock Roller Starters.
Also the "waffle ring" has an up side!!!!
Sounds like you're sick bud hope you heal up quickly
These engines has to be properly warmed for the oil window to show you the true amount of oil. Ride it for couple of minutes before checking the window or you'll might end up over filling it when you thought you were running low.
I had the same crank problem on my 2002 Yamaha WR250f I bought.
Yeah yamaha addressed the crank issues starting in 03 for the yzf and wr.
I have spent decades rebuilding these things for a living, but the last RMZ250 i did caught me out in exactly the same way. I got sucked into trying to help the young guy out by doing it on the cheap and the crank felt perfect. I ended up stripping it again completely and found the same dodgy rod bearing causing the issue. This gets awkward quickly when you are trying to pay the shop bills with your work. I gave him his deposit back and kept the bike as it simply wasn't worth fixing for his budget. Was he happy? No. Am I happy? Hell No. The parts prices are wild these days.
I was about to say "lesson learned", but had to laugh as I'm currently in the process of trying to revive a rough 1999 YZF400 for a good commercial customer. Better get this one right first time!
Yea buddy!!! Good morning!!!
Na bro I think Vin’s pumped on the RMZ250 he looked stoked tail wagging oh ya!
At least it didn't burst into flames, so that's a win!
I love when I can have my Sunday morning joe ☕️ with Joe!!! NICE!!!!
