It's easy to get really excited and focus only on the success stories, and it *is* super impressive what the devs were able to do in the short time they had before the lawyers came for them in the night. But also, when you sail in such uncharted waters, sometimes here there be serpents, savvy?
Thank you so much for this, Russ! You always have such concise, and well considered videos. Odin 2 Portal seems to tick all the boxes for me, so I've ordered one.
I think this is one, I think this is the one that is going to play NFL 2k5 first person mode smoothly. & The size of the handheld means no tingly fingers after 45 minutes to an hour of playing. I think they actually did it, i'm feeling incredibly optimistic here.
I think this reinforces my decision to buy a RP5. The RP5 can still play the majority or games this will play and does so in a smaller form factor and much cheaper price. The extra power might be good for certain Switch games but until the landscape of Switch emulation changes I don't think it's worth it to spend the extra. You can also overclock the GPU on the RP5 to get better Switch performance as well.
Evil Russ buys out all the handhelds and starts setting up the emulation software, but when asked if he really wants to do it he says no and never touches those handhelds again
I pre-ordered this over buying the RP5 or an SD OLED. Reasons being - the SD OLED is a full $100+ more, and is too fatiguing for me to play for long periods (I'm small and have small hands). The O2P is quite a bit smaller and lighter. Won't be buying the RP5 solely because of the left stick placement. I plan on streaming from my PC and playing lots of PS2 with the O2P and occasionally traveling with it since I sometimes visit my folks one state over. Also possibly worth noting that my only other emulation device is an MM+.
I'm in a similar boat. I haven't pre-ordered yet, but I'm 90% of the way there. My only device currently is also a MM+. I thought when the RP5 came out that it was going to be the one for me to finally upgrade, but then I heard about the Portal and saw the complaints about the RP5's left stick placement and decided to hold off. SD OLED is just too expensive. The SD LCD is on sale right now for less than the Portal, but the size, weight, and battery life are big concerns for me even though it plays steam games and has better switch performance. At this point the only thing I'm considering in place of the Portal is a gaming tablet with a Gamesir G8 controller slapped on. Something like a Lenovo Legion Y700 which has an 8.8in LCD screen.
About ZZZ, I don't know abput the android version, but on PC you can change to the controller profile just by pressing start on the controller, no need to change any settings
RP5 is more portable and even somewhat pocketable. OD2P is more of a stay home device. For me that is the biggest difference, and why I picked the Retroid, especially since I already have a Steam Deck OLED at home.
I bought this instead of the steamdeck because I don't leave around my house often and when I do I always bring a bag, using this reasoning well I could have got a steamdeck but I'd rather game stream on the OD2P , I originally wanted the mini but the ergonomics are not for shooters and I play a lot of them and also pocketability is not a requirement.
Russ, can you ask developers to make a 4 inch OLED thin bezels premium version of the 35xxsp? I love that handheld, and id easily pay 100 more for a premium version. Love your videos.
The HDR problem with moonlight, most likely is that you're trying to stream from a pc/tablet that has no HDR on its monitor/display. You could creat a virtual monitor for it in case. I do use that HDR function with my Lenovo Y700, so most likely Odin 2 portal must be capable of if the screen does support HDR.

Tablet plus full-sized controller is the king of ergonomics. I use a gooseneck stand to hold my iPad Mini over my bed to do Steam Link game streaming with an 8bitdo SN30 Pro Plus controller. All the comfort and precision I need to play a twitch game like Rocket League.
Have you gotten your Legion Y700 yet? If so, how are you liking it? The Portal and Legion Y700 are the two options I'm currently debating between. The 2023 model of the Y700 is going for around $300 on Ali Express rn for the 256GB model. That with a Gamesir G8 controller attached sounds like an amazing gaming set up. Only downside is LCD instead of OLED. I've also heard conflicting things about the Y700 being able to use micro SD cards to expand storage. Do you know if microSD cards work with it? My only real concern with the Y700 is the 256GB of storage filling up quickly and not being able to expand my
My only gripe about the Odin devices, and I love my Odin 2 and Odin 2 Mini, is that the sticks aren't quite as good as I would like. They're leagues above a Nintendo Joy-Con stick, but it's not quite as accurate as a regular Guilikit HE stick. There is almost no threshold between a slight press and a full press, and so a full press happens about 50% away from the edge of the stick. It's insanely difficult to press lightly on the stick and control it, so games that require this for sneaking or walking are almost impossible. Otherwise, the entire devices is awesome. It makes me wonder if this is the same case for the Retroid Pocket 5/Mini.
Personally I would probably pass on the Odin 2 Portal and wait for something like the switch 2 or other high end handhelds that will be released next year. Unless you MUST have a dedicated android handheld NOW. The Retroid lineup may be a better choice if you're looking to mostly do retro gaming.
I bought the Odin 2 Portal from their Indegogo campaign and I am so looking forward to getting it! Do you have a guide on setting it with retro emulators and games?
Quick note on The Getaway. I ran into a very similar looking graphical error when emulating xenosaga 3 on the Odin 2, including the massive slowdown when trying software rendering. The only fix I found was to run vulkan but in native resolution. I think it's an upscale error. Maybe that will help for you!
Had a similar battel, but i went for the portal. Yes its more money but not that much compared to what I got I feel. here are my reasons why im pro the portal 1. The screen is gorgeous and the bigger size makes me enjoy it more (same reason why the bigger screen switch was just way more comfortable for me to play on), plus my eyes hate me and its becoming harder and harder to read text on small screens. F&*% aging lol 2. The bigger size is more comfortable to hold in my hands (no pun intended) ergonomics look like a win for the portal for me 3. the thumbstick placement is horrible on the RP5, many reviewers said that it doesnt feel good to use. if you are more of D-pad person then who cares. 4. the power, i mean this chip at that price is mind blowing. most phones are double the price with that chip. its powerful can run most things at 4x and does switch emulation better. not that thats a big selling point for me but it feels more future proof especially with the more ram and android games. 5. I went with the 500 gb internal model because android games are getting huge and they dont play well with external storage. well those are my reasons for going portal over RP5 hope it helps
Love your reviews. The screen just looks gorgeous and the text in games actually readable without squinting. I made the mistake of getting the Odin 2 mini. 5 inch screen is too small for my aging eyes. I love the Mini for the PS Vita style and bright screen but it's too small and not oled quality. I can't wait to get my portal. It will probably be the last android handheld I'll ever need maybe. 🤔😀
Did your desktop and its Monitor have HDR enabled? In a standard Sunshine setup, it's streaming a mirror of your primary display and therefore limited to its capabilities or enabled features. You can, however, set it up to work with a virtual display driver or dummy plug with arbitrary resolutions and features. It can even be made to auto-switch to the client device's resolution. That takes a little bit of setup with scripts to do with standard Sunshine and Moonlight, or you can use the Apollo and Artemis forks that integrate that functionality.
9:41 Russ, regarding HDR for streaming- just like how the resolution of the primary device is copied, only if the primary device you’re streaming from has HDR enabled and running can you stream to another device in HDR
Bagel and cream cheese, black coffee - my choice of snack and drink for this video. BTW - Are you planning to stick with Indigo? I'm thinking about changing to black. Is the Indigo "pretty" enough to give up on the advantages that come with the black sku? (black bars on the side being less noticible). I have never seen an Indigo/blue handheld in person and it looked striking in pictures, so that's the one I went for.

Thanks for the great video, Russ! I’m still considering whether to get a Portal myself. What I think would help me decide is if I could see how 3DS games perform and look on the OLED with two screens open. Specifically anything demanding like Monster Hunter titles or titles that would use both screens a lot like Dragon Quest VII, DQ8, or Etrian Odyssey games. Thanks a bunch and I’m looking forward to the final review!
I don't think I'd buy this over a Steam Deck but it's impressive to see how much you can play with Android now, and the 8 gen 2 is now 2 generations old. In a few years there will really no point of having a separate PC, just use your phone with a dock. One thing I'm missing is RPCS3/Xenia, is that not a thing on Android or would it need stornger HW?
I want a device the size of the retroid pocket 5, but the power of the odin 2. I was tempted by the odin 2 mini, but I don't think the device that I want exists yet. so i'll be sticking with my retroid pro 4 and steam deck and wait for 6 months for the next big thing.

My only real concern with the Y700 is the 256GB of storage filling up quickly and not being able to expand my
Ahh Gris, on my original Odin it played well. Simulating button presses for the one screen swipes was pretty satisfying
They are the same sticks on the rp5/mini.
Try turning the stick sensitivity down. Mine was set to 133% by default and lowering it 100% helped.
This is what the Logitech G Cloud should have been. The full HD screen is what would make me consider it over a Steam Deck.
same here
Damn this handheld looks stunning, hope they improve the ergonomics 😭🔥
Holy smokes! FFVI Advance look crazy on this device!
With how good vita3k has gotten. I would love to see you add that to the testing. maybe using persona 4/ y's/ trails of cold steel as a benchmark
Hollow Knight actually has unofficial android port. Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 runs it at native 2560x1600 resolution at 144 fps stable.
19:34 You can play DOOM 2016 at 60 fps in Winlator Glibc v7.1.1
Sees Shaq Fu in corner of thumbnail
Ah, a man of culture I see.
You wanna rumble with me, tumble with me. I float like a cloud, sting like junglebee.
Watch out for the Shaq Attaq....
O2 Portal vs RP5…my personal battle! 🥹💰
Had a similar battel, but i went for the portal. Yes its more money but not that much compared to what I got I feel. here are my reasons why im pro the portal
1. The screen is gorgeous and the bigger size makes me enjoy it more (same reason why the bigger screen switch was just way more comfortable for me to play on), plus my eyes hate me and its becoming harder and harder to read text on small screens. F&*% aging lol
2. The bigger size is more comfortable to hold in my hands (no pun intended) ergonomics look like a win for the portal for me
3. the thumbstick placement is horrible on the RP5, many reviewers said that it doesnt feel good to use. if you are more of D-pad person then who cares.
4. the power, i mean this chip at that price is mind blowing. most phones are double the price with that chip. its powerful can run most things at 4x and does switch emulation better. not that thats a big selling point for me but it feels more future proof especially with the more ram and android games.
5. I went with the 500 gb internal model because android games are getting huge and they dont play well with external storage.
well those are my reasons for going portal over RP5 hope it helps
@@citizenterra How much is the O2 Portal?
0:53 - seems that for high-end devices, we are moving to this look & feel.
This with front made from one piece of glass. Like a smartphone has...
For me Steam deck, switch lite and retroid pocket 5 are complete package for playing games
Great review love your reviews 10/10 keep up the great work
Looks like I'll be keeping my RP4 pro until something that's worth buying comes out 🙂
Perfect video. My exact question. Srill cant justify paying this much for something that cant play the aaa games i get on steam deck
Wow that screen is absolutely gorgeous! Now we have to push Asus to create the first OLED VRR and I would be set
Mild error with title to gameplay at @20:21. Other than that, great breakdown! I appreciate how detailed this is.
Such a beautiful handheld!!!
I’m still patiently waiting for these to become more pocketable
8:47 btw theres an option on the streaming pc to adjust for the client aspect ratio/resolution
Can dummy HDMI outputs work with HDR?
I just got me a RG406V and it plays everything I want.
I can't imagine needing more power.
Mine cant play burnout 3 correctly, im trying to return it. Have you had that experience with any games?
Bagel and cream cheese, black coffee - my choice of snack and drink for this video.
BTW - Are you planning to stick with Indigo? I'm thinking about changing to black. Is the Indigo "pretty" enough to give up on the advantages that come with the black sku? (black bars on the side being less noticible). I have never seen an Indigo/blue handheld in person and it looked striking in pictures, so that's the one I went for.
great video, thank you
Well there's 25 minutes well spent once again 😊
Looks amazing but at that price you may as well get a steam deck.
please can u provide a simple guide for people who has retroid 5, ayn odin 2, ayn odin 2 portal to setup winlator. winlator bring values to android handheld as it can bring GOG purchases older windows games. it will ensure purchase of odin 2 portal is worth it image playing fall new vegas, skyrim, half life
Thanks for the great video, Russ!
Ordered the indiego! Excited for it! Rp5 is otw now too. Will you be doing a video on the trimui brick? I've been debating it
I didn’t have my snack and drink ready and now all games have just turned into Fallout 3 😞
I just ordered the RP5! Dude I can’t keep up!
Oh thank God, he asked me to grab a snack and drink
Russ please please please do a comparison with the Ayaneo Pocket Evo when you get a review unit!
Those emulators do not have Android versions.
I want a device the size of the retroid pocket 5, but the power of the odin 2. I was tempted by the odin 2 mini, but I don't think the device that I want exists yet. so i'll be sticking with my retroid pro 4 and steam deck and wait for 6 months for the next big thing.
Same here. Gonna stick with my RP4P for a bit longer.
Potential video out fixes: Turn TV upside down or install ankle straps into your ceiling
That's so weird that Sea of Stars crashed at the end for you cause I was able to beat the whole thing including getting the hidden ending. Your save file might be corrupted
anyone know what front end hes using at 11:51?
