The XO's homecoming broke my heart. He will become a single Captain just like his Captain. I am American but I worked in the Former Soviet Union from 91-95 and I have nothing but respect for Russian citizens, especially now living under the thumb of the dictator Putin. A Russian officer singlehandedly prevented the launch of ICBM's during a false American launch indication in the 80's. I trust them not to fire again...

TK-20 "Severstal". If someone know Russian, I recommend a series of books "Акулы из стали" ("Sharks made of Steel") by former TK-20 officer, electronic engineer, captain 3rd rank (equivalent to Lt.Cmdr) Eduard Ovechkin (Эдуард Овечкин), who served under command of Alexander Bogachev (may he rest in peace! Cpt.Bogachev died of cancer in 2015). I don't know, if these books were translated to English.

I’m from a part of Scotland where submarines, surface vessels and underwater weapons are tested. I worked for the MoD on that range when I was younger, and I’m more worried about the Kilo Class submarines than the Typhoons. Those sneaky wee bastards are practically impossible to hear under a few knots and are perfect for inshore coasts….like where I live! Russia sold lots of them to other nations because they’re such great wee things. However, now I’m 47 and an old fart, I’d love to see a Typhoon up close - they really are pretty impressive but I can’t help think of the poor souls on the Kursk that Putin allowed to die a slow, cold death. I have nothing but respect for submarines, no matter who they sail for. Brave men, (and women these days).

I visited the USSR in 1986 and 87, and made some good friends. I also got the pleasure of meeting some I'd met the year before.in the UK. I can only comment from my own experiences; and I can say everyone I met were very friendly, and immensely helpful.
I remember the stupid and ignorant comments from people here, warning I couldn't go anywhere or take photos; and ALL from people who'd never been there. I went where I wanted and as well as being able to take photos, they told me where to get the best views from.
One cannot judge a nation by a few individuals, or from ignorant heresy. And when I used what little Russian language I had, it went a long way and it was appreciated.
I hope the wife of the Ex/O realises what she said to him. She clearly doesn't deserve him. And I hope the Captain isn't lonely for too long.
They're all heroes; whichever flag they fly.

      Well
      Said.
      I agree with it all.
I am American, but have much respect and even love for Russia, Russians, and anyone really because I understand things many don't- and accepting the fact that through propaganda, government fear tactics and even "education", many are taught to hate and fear, other nations through generation to generation as I see every single day in western media "propaganda".
The Russians, Germans, Italians, Chinese, Israelis, Americans, Japanese, etc etc etc all come from the same exact beginning.
We are more connected than anyone could imagine-
Until that is recognized by all people, there will always be jealousy, hate, envy, fear of some other people who are exactly the same as us and you.

The last thing that is right to do is for our "leaders" to tell us to fight and kill each other because they are angry with some other idiot "leading" some other country. We're all better than this and have so much more in common that we have differences. I, for one, will not raise my hand against my fellow human being. Thats still a impressive sub. Even if its not in its best shape.
But i rather like to imagine it as a luxury yacht than a weapon.
Rip out the missile silos, the torpedotubes and everything related to those weapons exept the sonar. You get a ton of space. Limit the divedepth to lets say 200m/600ft and put in windows like in a batyscaph.
    You get a diving platform.
You dont have to cope with bad weather.
You dont have to refuel after every atlantic crossing.
The deck is wide enough to be usable at the surface.
Of course subs in general and especialy nuclear powered subs need experts to operate.
You better dont enter teritorial waters underwater or unanounced.
Since tat will never happen i have to resort to such documentaries like this one. Thanks 4 uploading

There is an inherent problem with certain tubes. Whether it be the fuselage of a bomber airplane ,an ICB silo or a boomer submarine. Typhoon is its NATO designation, project Akula was the development of them. Project 971 Shchuka-B has the NATO designation Akula. That’s where the confusion comes from.

Its not worth getting the latest and greatest. I buy when the new items come out bc the prior items are marked down a great deal. Also, very often the dust has settled with regard to product lines.
