Platinum President fountain pen - is it worth $80-$100 more than the Platinum 3776 Century?

Here's why it's a more premium pen than the 3776. However, is it worth the price difference?
My experience with regard to the overall appearance was only slightly better: no issues with the nib, less issues with the cap (no click but occasional cross threading did happen, although, for some reason, not lately). I would choose holding Sailors over President any day of the week. But when it comes to writing… There is nothing magical but it somehow fits very well to the way how I hold the pen, what I expect from the line, what kind of response I expect from the nib and so forth. Very good working pen. I don’t have any other pen (and I own quite a few), which could match this. So, for me, President indeed is worth its price tag.
The ring in the back juts out just enough, that it enables us to post the cap without scratching the barrel surface. I noticed the ring being finished the same way, on the 3776, and the Sailors (non celluloid and urushi) versions too. If you have demonstrator versions of the pens, you can see on the inner cap, there are shallow ribs that hold on to the ring in the back, as you post them together. Not sure if the feel of sharpness on yours is an anomaly, but the rings are generally well burnished, so when I run my fingers through mine, it just feels like a smooth bump.
Although discontinued, you can still get one on eBay from Japan for around $180 including shipping to the US. In general, I agree with the review on the good points and some of the not so good points. However, at the current price point, I’m okay with all that. Thanks for your review - I like hearing about others perspectives.
I really like the carving sound the nib makes on the paper. This looks like a relatively wet/broad medium. I'd probably prefer a fine for my smaller writing style 😊
I love the 3776, but I think the President is worth the xtra $. Actually, I could go online right now and find it for LESS than the 3776. It looks a bit nicer, it’s heavier and feels more luxurious. The material the barrel is made of doesn’t easily scratch like the 3776 does. The nib, on my medium, is a touch softer and smoother, and has a little bit of natural line variation. My pen gets a lot of use and I’m not particularly careful with it, and it still looks great. I’m disappointed that it has been discontinued, looking to pick up one with a B nib.
Although this model is now discontinued, it is worth noting that the much more expensive Platinum Izumo uses the same nib as the Platinum President.

I think people complain too much over a pen that sells for slightly more money than a Pelikan M200, which is subpar.
I had at least 5 platinum pens both new and old and although the plastic is light, it's actually very strong.
I have no experience with the president model but i think that ring at the end of the section is meant to catch the cap when posted.
What i don't like about platinum fps is that the nibs give too much feedback, although it's not unpleasant.
Overall though, they are quality pens that are easy to maintain and you will see that very few of them have damage despite being very old(lots of them get sold on ebay everyday).
FYI, i just checked ebay orices and the president can be had for $112 shipped, and that's a very good price for a Japanese pen made with a 18K nib.
if you are lucky you might found a (all new unused) president just $30 more than 3776. That will be a good trade. only thing i will never understand why platinum dont use slip sleal cap tech on president.

PS: I have a number of 3776 pens that I greatly enjoy. But I prefer the President…size fits my very large hands and I really enjoy the better nib. Re the resin? It in no way feels “cheap” - however that’s judged. Re price point, etc. Currently the President is available from a number of very reputable sites/vendors for the same or even less than the 3776…so…as a matter of fact I just ordered a third President (black/gold - broad)…already had a black/rhodium - medium and my new burgundy/gold - fine. I greatly enjoy them.
Hello again. At about 4:35 you’re mentioning the qualities of the lack there of of the pen, and you mentioned the Band. Yours looks different than mine. I noticed that right off. Mine is Gold through and through. It is not missing gold plating inside the writing at all. Now I know they’ve been making this for a while, but I didn’t know that they change the way they cut the words on the band. This worries me. Makes me wonder if you or I may have gotten fake.
Hi there. Mine was a solid gold color when new. I think combination of the plating wearing off and the lighting makes it look like there's another color. Hope that helps!

For the sub 200€ price you can have this pen currently I think it's absolutely worth it.
I always felt like the resin in the 3776 at least feels nicer than sailor resin. Feels more glassy / dense to me.
I agree the Platinum resin feels more glassy. I personally prefer the less glassy feel of the other brands

Hello. I’m a little confused. In about 48 seconds in you said that the platinum president is about $100 more than the platinum 3776 Century. I’m a little bit confused. Unless you said it backwards? I haven’t watched the rest of your video yet. When I looked at both and I rechecked just now, the platinum 3776 centuries are going from about $175 to $400 on average. so I’m not sure why you paid more for the president? Cheers.
Since the President is now discontinued, this is a bit of a moot point. However, back when it was available in US retailers, the market price was around $250 vs $150 for the 3776. I bought mine in Japan several years ago. At the time, a 3776 in Japan was $75-100 (for a standard, gold-plated model). The President was $100-150 (depending on the store / discounts)....so approximately the same premium in terms of percentage.
@@seattlepenclub I find this very interesting. You would think being that the platinum president was discontinued that the prices would skyrocket on the remaining stock. But it has seem to go down. Again, this is my worry with the price I got mine for. I’m seeing it go for $150-$300 everywhere else. I got mine for a little over 100 on Amazon. I did get it through Amazon Japan. So maybe that’s why it was a good price?

To me, the entire Platinum line seems sub-par compared to Sailor and Pilot pens of similar pricing.
As a die hard Pilot fan, I agree. That said, I can see how one could argue that the 3776 is a good value relative to Pilot and Sailor
