I think of 2000 as the last year of pure F1: No traction control, meaning it was all down to driver skill. Also, purity of engine sounds unaltered. Traction control really messes with the engine notes, especially out of medium and slow corners. No altered circuits. Pure Spa, pure Suzuka, pure Hockenheim etc. Pre-Tilke monstrosities, with the exception of Sepang, actually still Tilke's best circuit, which was on 2000 calendar. 12 lap qualifying session slugfest. (Just think of Suzuka 2000 - the last truly great qualifying session; perhaps the greatest of all time.) Old points system - win = 10pts; 2nd = 6pts; - 3rd = 4pts; - 4th = 3pts; - 5th = 2pts; 6th = 1pt (Fair and square and with maximum incentive to win.) Hakkinen overtaking Schumacher at Spa; Schumacher overtaking Hakkinen at Nurburgring; Tense battle at San Marino; tense battles throughout the season. Last truly great rivalry with drivers respectful of each other and very differing styles: Schumacher the throttle and race master, Hakkinen the line and qualifying master. Fantastic times. I'd like to take the 2000 season on DVD with me into my pyramid, even though my guy - Hakkinen - didn't take it at the end. Still, Schumacher had to WORK for it. If Hakkinen hadn't retired at Indianapolis, he would likely have won that season. Even so, couldn't begrudge The Michael his championship after sweating so hard for it. Great, great champions both.

Electronic aids brought it down and seemed like suddenly everyone's running the same # of cylinders and engines coming from fewer sources, cars looking almost identical. Here's a fun scenario to ponder: What would F1 be like today if there were no engine limits or performance restrictions? How popular would it have become?
I remember my dad brought me to silverstone for the first time when I was still a kid I told my dad there's a jet coming. He said no son thats an F1 car reaping the aspalt. I cant believe it. It was frightening and beautiful at same time. It shook my body when this car pass us.
Quite possibly for me the most beautiful sounding F1 car of any era. It’s like the mix sounds of the NA V10 and V6 hybrid turbos engines plus adding the sound of a US fighter jet. A beautiful car with a beautiful sound
I was lucky in the year 1997 that i accidentally tuned in an f1 race on star sports just waiting for an nba game. I was hooked up. Schummacher-hakkinen rivalry thru the early 2000's was for me my best years of watching f1 during the weekend with my family. Now i still watch but not that into it if you know what i mean. I was lucky and indeed thankful.
97 rivalry was MS-Villo 98: little rivalry MH-MS 99: MH-Irvine, little too. 2000 was the only real rivalry MS-MH 2001 MH lost Motivation and retired, DC took command.
I found F1 in a similar way. My grandad was flicking channels and seen sparks fly out of Michael Schumachers Ferrari at Suzuka. I told him to switch back. Had my head for it ever since.
What I love about this era's cars is not the noise itself, but how the engines just sang a lovely song on every lap... you can literary hear every press on the throttle and the brake and every time the car changes gear... you could feel the car accelerating and decelerating and all the corrections the driver makes, over the TV... the diffuser wail on the Mclarens even enchanced that feel
In 2001 for my 18th birthday my Dad took me to Silverstone F1, when this came out of the pits for the first time I had ever even heard an F1 car in real life was the greatest sound I ever heard and will ever hear! Can't explain the ear piercing noise and otherworldly whale that thing made!! Beautiful
I can remember watching this car at Silverstone for the Gp in 2000 the sound was absolutely fantastic , nothing I’d ever heard before ! I think the loudest V10 Iv ever heard was the 2005 bar Honda .

I was at the Indy race in 2000 & watched the telemetry on the giant screen when the cars were pitting. When the Mclaren Mercedes cars dropped off the air jack they briefly hit the rev limiter...at 21,500 rpm. I think thats why they sounded better than even the Ferraris. Insane rpm

The Mp4-15 was my favourite V10 McLaren Merc. In the right window of setup, it was arguably mighty faster than the F2000 Ferrari but they just didn't have enough good days and reliability. Some of Mika's qualy laps when the car was hooked up were amazing and it was definitely a damn good race car.

I was born in 1995 and immediately fell in love with McLaren at 3/4 years old. I think my father, being a Schumacher/Ferrari fan also made me like Hakkinen/McLaren even more... I didn't get to see the McLaren-Honda era: Senna, Prost...but I'm glad I was born in the McLaren-Mercedes era.

Approaching from the distance sounded like a Stuka dive bomber, somehow people in the stands could guess it was a McLaren, even if all V10 engines sounded almost the same, Merc had the exhaust oriented on the difuser and the sound was more aggressive and vibrant. In 1990 the highest RMP was about 14K,,15K in 2000 in was 19K. rpm
It’s a shame but it had to happen eventually, the v6 engines are over 200bhp more powerful and mean that the modern cars are over 10 seconds a lap quicker than the v10s. I miss this sound but wouldn’t want it back, the cars would be so much slower

@@jigglediggle29 even if they were built like power units nowadays they would be more unreliable than the V6s. More moving parts (10 cylinders instead of 6) = greater chance of failure. Couple that with the mammoth cost of building a V10 hybrid (yes it would be more expensive than a V6 cos again more moving parts) and it would end with most teams going bankrupt and the manufacturers leaving. Things were not great in the past, they were even worse. So get your head out of the clouds

Traction control was a thing in 2001, it was just hidden, you can hear it in a few clips in this video...

The whole structure of the engine would be built like the powerunit today, much more stable. Current F1 is the biggest shit, FIA ruined the whole sport. F1 has lost his role as the pioneer of motorsport. It's a generation thing - in the past we had drivers like Prost, Hunt, Lauda, Mansell, Senna, Irvine, Michael Schumacher - grown men! And now? Mr. No Competition Hamilton, Crybabies like Verstappen, Stroll etc. Oh boy. F1 is going downhill, very fast. The new reglement won't help.
@@jigglediggle29 even if they were built like power units nowadays they would be more unreliable than the V6s. More moving parts (10 cylinders instead of 6) = greater chance of failure. Couple that with the mammoth cost of building a V10 hybrid (yes it would be more expensive than a V6 cos again more moving parts) and it would end with most teams going bankrupt and the manufacturers leaving.
Things were not great in the past, they were even worse. So get your head out of the clouds

It was a unique combination of making the pistons out of a beryllium alloy and the exhaust running through the rear diffuser. Those two combined created this, the best sounding car in the history of motor racing.
