I think folks are confusing “evolutionary” and “natural selective” reason for the existence of homosexuality, which as a biologist and paleontologist I find frustrating. People seem to conflate selection and evolution, but selection is merely one way by which evolution occurs. There will be phenotypic variability in EVERY population of organisms purely due to mutation, genetic drift, recombination, and migration. Natural selection need NOT occur for new phenotypes to occur. Moreover, just because something is selected against doesn’t mean that the phenotype disappears forever - if we look at the distribution of reproductive fitness for a given phenotype, there will be individuals on either end - because that’s just how math works. Lower fitness individuals can and still do reproduce. My sneaking suspicion is that the reason it is so common among animals is because it’s a polygenic trait. The alleles involved (if there are any, and I’d bet that there are) probably don’t do a whole lot on their own individually; may be involved and tightly integrated in other functions beyond reproductive biology; there may be multiple combination of alleles that predispose a person to same-sex (or for that matter, opposite-sex or bisexual) orientation; and the alleles may also require some sort of developmental stimulus in utero (and there may be several). Add this onto the fact that mutations and recombinations are happening ALL THE TIME and you see why homosexuality persists despite technically being “a reproductive disadvantage”.
Yes, a lot of good points in here. Looking for a frequency-dependent selective advantage for homosexuality is probably worthwhile as it's conceptually plausible... But how strange would it be to do this for another psychological trait/behavior set that is associated with less reproduction and appears with low frequency?
Ever since I started reading and watching stuff on dating and relationships I've actually lost more interest in being in a relationship, it seems that the more I understand the less appealing dating becomes
I have a question about looksmaxxing. Do you think it helps and specifically do you think the videos on analyzing men's faces on their specific facial features and how attractive they are is something men should be using to adjust those features to find a potential dating partner?
Oh we are so back. Also Macken as a random internet dude with no qualifications I have a experiment idea. I was thinking about the proposal that women are on average more attractive than men. Has anyone taken a bunch of gay men, shown them pics of a variety of men, seen what percentage they find attractive, and then done the same thing with women? I feel like if the gay group finds significantly more of the men attractive maybe it's just that women are more picky, but it both groups agree then maybe men really are just not as attractive. Am I in the kitchen or is that a dumb experiment?
@@6em974 that's a very good, cool experiment; one I could see getting published. It wouldn't really tell us which group is "right," but it would lend credence to the idea that men are just generally more attracted to a larger percentage of any given population they are attracted to (I'd also want to see whether gay men find as many men attractive as hetero men find women attractive; because most men find many women attractive). Not sure it does exactly what you say, but I think yes you're in the kitchen, you're cooking and it is fun.
Great content. Very illuminating. One suggestion, get a lavalier microphone. Your voice would be much clearer. The current room echo makes it harder to hear you for us who's hearing is not perfect.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts regarding the hunter-gatherer situation. Each role our early ancestors played was a testament to their durability and ingenuity. All members contributed to the group in order to achieve success - if we’re steering away from facts simply because of sex differences, then we’re doing more of a disservice to the general public. I feel like there may be an overcompensation taking place to some degree because a certain group of individuals has been marginalized historically in a more negative light - particularly women, but those are just some of my thoughts. All love and respect ✊🏼
You sure we women care less about looks? I find that many who date unattractive men don't stay with them, and if they do, it's for reasons besides physical attraction (money, security, settling down). Many couples also become fat and ugly, which should not happen when there's real physical chemistry (in which they would strive to take care of themselves to look good for their partner).
How important is sexual history to people trying to date in their late 20’s? I’ve been trying to break into the dating scene for the first time and it seems I’ve run across so many guys who are being put off by my virginity status at 25. Wondering if this is a normal thing or not. Also would be good to know if men overall will be put off by a woman who has sexual dysfunctions like vaginismus since it makes sex painful. Also, do guys really only want “one thing” like my dad has told me my entire life?
Not sure, but you're correct in intuiting that people most like a "medium" amount of past partners... Why not just not tell them until you're deep enough to have sussed each other out?
In high-SES contexts, BMI explains a lot of the variance in female bodily attractiveness. Idk about "flat stomachs" specifically, but I can speak confidently that thinness is quite prized in, say, affluent Manhattan or Japan or what have you. However, women generally overperceive men's desire for thinness, all the same, so while it is desirable, women tend to have a more extreme perception. It's a good question.
@@murphymackenthanks for answering! I wasn't asking about thinness per se because there're women who are heavier than an average man would want them to be, and still have a relatively flat stomach which makes them way more attractive than if they didn't. Such a body type is what plus size models MUST have like if they want to have any chance for having a career in that business.
Probably not, but this question has no good answers. Men are biologically capable of having kids up to a very old age. Whether or not you “give up” and put that effort into something else is entirely dependent on your preferences as an individual. Age gaps of 20+ years do exist.

I actually prefer to pay for a woman regardless of how much she makes. It's a good way to signal your ability to provide for her, I think.
I would do that in the early stages as well regardless, I'm thinking more in a long-term committed context.
