That’s beyond brutal, I’ve worked up on my roofs over the last 30 years as a tech fixing other than mechanical equipment. You do just what is required to make it work. No deluxe repairs when it’s that cold.

During the hour long drive to get parts, the home warmed up to 58F 15C, it will take a long time to reach a comfortable 68F or 20C. With certain Cities wanting us to install the very smallest furnace to keep the home warm, they seem to forget on very cold days it will take hours to reach a comfortable temperature when starting at 30F. My guess is that the home has very little insulation between the very cold basement and the living space? That does not help at all! If they have a electric stove, I would recommend running the oven, but not with a gas oven.

I am beyond grateful for all who work in HVAC. And service contractors too. Long story short I want on vacation in the mountains during Christmas. The Well pump was frozen shut when the heater breaker tripped out on the pump. So No water for a week. And half way through, the Aux. Heat on the AC tripped out too. Very nice sleeping in a cabin that was 48 degrees at night. The heat pump just couldn't keep up. The people called where not happy but we understood and provided them with some food to show gratitude otherwise the entire Trip would of been ruined for us in a frosty cabin.
The Pump company was scheduled out over a week in advance. The owner begged them to place this as emergency and even so they where still out more than 3 days due to the large number of emergencies and low number of crews available. HVAC company was more than 3 weeks booked out. And Emergency calls where the same. This cold causes a really bad situation for everyone in those fields.
For those playing along at home... make sure the port at the inducer casing is clear. It is the first place for FOD (like drywall dust), to try to get out and if blocked, even partially, It will not have the draw to close the pressure switch(es). If it is clogged, it will make the switches look bad. I carry small bits, orifice sized, to clear the port.
@@HVACRSurvival When the port is restricted, it will not allow enough suction to pass quick enough to close the switch. The draft will look great but it can't draw through the port orifice. I had a spider web stop one, the kind of spider that clogs grill orifices.

sometimes pressure switches shows good in tester but due to carbonization on contacts they dont really close the circuit when in operation same as amplifier relays they dont have an output yet when you test them they are ok
I know it is an efficiency thing, but they make everything so complicated. You would think that someone could manufacture a simple, high efficiency furnace. During my 75 years on this earth I can't remember having to have a service call on a furnace. All that was required was to change the air filter and an occasional fan belt. Also, the blower fan and motor had oil cups, which if oiled periodically, would very rarely fail. Hey, times change, and I guess we have to be thankful that there are people like you that understand these new systems and are willing to brave the elements in order to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Bad thing is that many people who call in for their next fuel delivery like myself are at a higher chance of running out of fuel due to the cold snaps making us use much more fuel.
So I know on the nests, idk about the ecobee, but if you jumped out red to white or yellow or green it would cause the thermostat to error out, and it would open the circuit. They use transistors/solid state switches instead of mechanical relays and they read the resistance/voltage drop on the circuit and when you jump it out it freaks them out and they'll lock out when you change resistance it was used to seeing
The nests are notorious for the cooling circuit failing if you have a loose connection to the contactor or any chattering that can cause high amp draw on the y wire or even if it's trying to run a large contactor or multiple contactors or had any thing close to a short to ground it would fry the transistor/solid state relay. So when you read voltage at the contactor control side it when it's connected you'd get 50-500 MV but if you disconnect and read sometimes it would be 9-24V but the current carrying capacity would be severely reduced when it fails. I think they even list the maximum amps each control leg coming out of the nest at like 200-500 MA and it's a hard rating... I've even had a sticking reversing valve fry one once that was a kick in the butt, after changing the valve and getting ready to run in cooling nothing happens 🤣🤣
You would think it wouldn't be like that being these technically are not a power stealing thermostat because they have a common wire but this was a huge issue when they didn't have Commons required. The old power stealing stats were able to be powered off just r&w, total pieces of crap usually, I wouldn't be surprised if they used a capacitor to keep the display up and going while that circuit was closed.
Great video Rick. I just replaced a pressure switch on one of my houses because it throws a code saying switch is bad and i can visually see the error. I still couldnt quite follow how you determine the one on the left is faulty. is it because that one is on the pressure switch circuit? so the one on the bottom will never be a problem?
The best way to check a pressure switch is to put a tee in line with the pressure switch and draft motor, then measure it with a manometer. If you're lucky the pressure switch will have a rating on the side of it, you normally want to be one and a half times more than what it is rated at but that's just something I've noticed. You definitely don't want to be right at the rating.

Technical support is the big thing with any of those mini splits, I don't like working on them because I don't know them very well, I do too many different things to be specialized in it. Each guy at our shop has a niche that they're really good at and that's not one of mine. Mine is the ice cream related machines and generators but even generators I'm not that great at anymore because I don't work on them very often.
Any time I take on a commercial account, or even a residential account, I start labeling everything. I service 200 units over 5 locations (large commercial buildings) and have spent a lot of time labeling the units so I don't have to guess. I craft spreadsheets and unit maps with all unit information. Don't get me wrong it definitely takes a long time, but definitely worth it.
I fully agree, I think some people believe keeping that information hidden makes it easier to confuse others later but even if I don't have it, I'll get it eventually, people are just jerks

Looks like his paint marker froze trying to label the unit; Sharpies work better because they're alcohol-based. (Come to think of it, so are some HAVCR techs). :)
14 of the calls were high efficiency gas furnace the drain lines were frozen easy fix but driving around to all of them took alot of time I had bad inducer fans bad boards bad indoor blower motor bad capicater

Yeah that day it was not fun whatsoever, it never is when it’s that cold. I spent 3/4 of it un gelling diesel reefers, trucks, jumpstarting and thawing ice in air brakes not a treat. Glad you made it through the deep freeze as well.
Yeah Columbus is only 90 minutes away, the wife won't let me leave this god forsaken state. At least for now until more things change of course I probably won't be in the field by then 🤦🏻😂

Channel locks??! First off he's using the correct tool. A Knipex flat jaw pair of pliers that I also have in every size, you can buy four pairs of "channel locks" for the price of those Knipex. Secondly they are called slip joint pliers, Channellock brand pliers have blue handles. Channellock is a brand.
That he used some oil for the motor to fix the noise of the bearings temporary, this is nice. But he should give the owner a list with some tips how they can improve their system.
@Mike I know I talk fast but if you listen to what I said you'll hear me say I told the customer about it and he said it's been like that forever and he did not want it repaired beyond what it took to get it running. I don't go into all the details in the video so give me the benefit of the doubt, he also told me that he wanted to sell the house next year, not that that makes it right but there's nothing I can do if these people don't want to spend the money. How about just being glad I made the video.
I did learn Rheem furnace doesn't have the safety on it. That shuts the burners off if it can't drain like a Trane and Goodman and I think carrier Rheem will back up and drain out of the furnace whoever installed this furnace put a small pan under AC coil but not under furnace so his ceiling had water pouring from it
that add a wire, are never friendly when they work ok but when they do not good luck! in some cases that is all you can do, guys use 8 wire or more it helps the next tech out of a jam in the future the cost is minimal it could be you. thanks. this one was a pistil multiple issues good work
who was chipper in that nasty howling wind and sub zero schmutz? I stayed in the house except for Christmas day, the poor old furnace here was fighting a losing battle, at one point it hit 65F inside running non stop. too many walls open and insulation out during construction work. 😬🥶
The nerve of old man winter enabling a freeze right before christmas :) I am not in the trades, but I when to Lowes on Monday that the plumbing section was packed with people dealing with busted pipes. Lots of people still buying CPVC pipes. I am sure they be back when the next freeze hits again.
I hate finding multiple units and none are marked I mean put a number on it when you install it I always label them when I either maintenance them or work on one I'll label that one then a simple number on the tstat a number on the unit
I agree I've found rollout switch bypassed hi limit bypassed alot of stuff the neighbor got my unit running is what they say then I tell them how dangerous they left the unit then they want to get mad
People don't realize how a dead homeowner affects a business but what do we know. I bypassed an electric furnace temp cutout and learned my lesson when the customer didn't answer the phone when the part came in. Never again, don't care how cold it is. That bothered me for a while until I had to tell myself I was just trying to help someone out in - wind-chill.
ecobee and other inline trash delete and regular t-stat on the wall, solved. the power going out while trying to diagnose it, would have made me blow a gasket 100%.

in this case, that was likely already "acidic" corrosion, from condensate. so it would likely not do anything to it or speed up the corrosion. so you'd probably want an alkali or other neutralizer(baking soda). something far more acidic would clean it, but probably do more damage than good :)
@@blankmans8908 small cell type batteries are often alkaline type (potassium hydroxide) which is an alkali on ph scale, and standard white vinegar is an acid on ph scale, so it neutralizes and helps clean the alkali material off. to neutralize something acidic, use something like plain baking soda or mix it into a thick paste with plain water. it will fizz and foam, possibly making a mess.(vinegar and baking soda mixed = volcanic foamy mess) lol always flush with plain water/rubbing alcohol afterwards.
you can tell you do more comercial then residential because you were testing the WRONG pressure switch that is the condensate switch the one at the bottom was the actual primary switch and used a damn wire bursh on a board like wtf

I've been doing residential hvac for 10 years and that's exactly why at the end of the video you see him replacing the black and white pressure switch instead of the all black one that his headass was testing at the start of that call imagine sounding so confused over a simple pressure switch call and ready to condem the whole damn furnace all the way from the eco bee to the slight hum on the inducer all cuz ur ass didn't want to deal with it like a man. They truly will let just about anybody do this job. And if I'm wrong then why did the all black pressure switch open and close just fine when testing with your Metter? It wasn't dropping voltage cuz the contacts were working properly on that one. Your ass went to a parts house got a universal pressure switch realized you were wrong in your diag and eventually ended up replacing the right one and just hoped we wouldn't notice hack job thru and thru just firing rhe parts cannon at it and hope it works lmao and don't get me started on u peeing on the other guys roof in the first call

The pressure switch on the condensate drain was in line with the gas valve. I even told you it was in line with the gas valve. Therefore, if it didn't open and close, it would never give you a pressure switch failure code because it's not on the pressure switch circuit. Man, I LOVE people like you because all you do is confirm I'm worth even more money than I'm already paid. GO back and watch it a few more times....I did have to mount the switches a little higher to make them fit due to the brackets not fitting the same, You can still see the correct wires are going to the correct switch. I worked for a Rheen dealer for 4 years and have done hundreds of Rheems. I can tell you right now where I stated just a few of these things I said they were at 16:02 and a 21:55. ALSO FYI the black/white switch is the condensate switch and has BLUE WIRES, The draft motor switch is ALL BLACK and has PURPLE WIRES. You can say sorry or just craw away once you go back and see I'm correct. Either way I could care less. I admit when I'm wrong but once again I had to go back and watch this carefully and write down the colors so I can be confident.... Later!

I worked through that winter storm as well. Was at a kfc with no heat. One unit went off on roll out when birds nest that was in it caught fire. Lol😂

That's why I checked the actual draft being created by the IDM with the monometer, it was about 50% higher than needed to close the switch.

It’s a Rheem the heat exchanger is stainless so failure is very low with them

Got cold in Texas, 16 degrees F. Lennox heat pump kept up, 79 degrees for my mum. She's 90 years old.

Bad thing is that many people who call in for their next fuel delivery like myself are at a higher chance of running out of fuel due to the cold snaps making us use much more fuel.
So I know on the nests, idk about the ecobee, but if you jumped out red to white or yellow or green it would cause the thermostat to error out, and it would open the circuit. They use transistors/solid state switches instead of mechanical relays and they read the resistance/voltage drop on the circuit and when you jump it out it freaks them out and they'll lock out when you change resistance it was used to seeing
The nests are notorious for the cooling circuit failing if you have a loose connection to the contactor or any chattering that can cause high amp draw on the y wire or even if it's trying to run a large contactor or multiple contactors or had any thing close to a short to ground it would fry the transistor/solid state relay. So when you read voltage at the contactor control side it when it's connected you'd get 50-500 MV but if you disconnect and read sometimes it would be 9-24V but the current carrying capacity would be severely reduced when it fails. I think they even list the maximum amps each control leg coming out of the nest at like 200-500 MA and it's a hard rating... I've even had a sticking reversing valve fry one once that was a kick in the butt, after changing the valve and getting ready to run in cooling nothing happens 🤣🤣
You would think it wouldn't be like that being these technically are not a power stealing thermostat because they have a common wire but this was a huge issue when they didn't have Commons required. The old power stealing stats were able to be powered off just r&w, total pieces of crap usually, I wouldn't be surprised if they used a capacitor to keep the display up and going while that circuit was closed.
Bearings on my house furnace sounded like that and within 2 days it locked up and ended up with a whole new furnace.
Great video Rick. I just replaced a pressure switch on one of my houses because it throws a code saying switch is bad and i can visually see the error. I still couldnt quite follow how you determine the one on the left is faulty. is it because that one is on the pressure switch circuit? so the one on the bottom will never be a problem?
Because only one of the pressure switches were on the pressure sensor circuit, the other one just broke power to the gas valve.

The best way to check a pressure switch is to put a tee in line with the pressure switch and draft motor, then measure it with a manometer. If you're lucky the pressure switch will have a rating on the side of it, you normally want to be one and a half times more than what it is rated at but that's just something I've noticed. You definitely don't want to be right at the rating.

@@danielprose5878 Most techs don't like Goodman which Daikin is a part of. They can be ok if this install is done properly.
Technical support is the big thing with any of those mini splits, I don't like working on them because I don't know them very well, I do too many different things to be specialized in it. Each guy at our shop has a niche that they're really good at and that's not one of mine. Mine is the ice cream related machines and generators but even generators I'm not that great at anymore because I don't work on them very often.

Any time I take on a commercial account, or even a residential account, I start labeling everything. I service 200 units over 5 locations (large commercial buildings) and have spent a lot of time labeling the units so I don't have to guess. I craft spreadsheets and unit maps with all unit information. Don't get me wrong it definitely takes a long time, but definitely worth it.
I fully agree, I think some people believe keeping that information hidden makes it easier to confuse others later but even if I don't have it, I'll get it eventually, people are just jerks

I showed how to use a toner in an earlier video where I did just that.
14 of the calls were high efficiency gas furnace the drain lines were frozen easy fix but driving around to all of them took alot of time I had bad inducer fans bad boards bad indoor blower motor bad capicater

Yeah that day it was not fun whatsoever, it never is when it’s that cold. I spent 3/4 of it un gelling diesel reefers, trucks, jumpstarting and thawing ice in air brakes not a treat. Glad you made it through the deep freeze as well.

Channel locks??! First off he's using the correct tool. A Knipex flat jaw pair of pliers that I also have in every size, you can buy four pairs of "channel locks" for the price of those Knipex. Secondly they are called slip joint pliers, Channellock brand pliers have blue handles. Channellock is a brand.

@Mike I know I talk fast but if you listen to what I said you'll hear me say I told the customer about it and he said it's been like that forever and he did not want it repaired beyond what it took to get it running. I don't go into all the details in the video so give me the benefit of the doubt, he also told me that he wanted to sell the house next year, not that that makes it right but there's nothing I can do if these people don't want to spend the money. How about just being glad I made the video.
I did learn Rheem furnace doesn't have the safety on it. That shuts the burners off if it can't drain like a Trane and Goodman and I think carrier Rheem will back up and drain out of the furnace whoever installed this furnace put a small pan under AC coil but not under furnace so his ceiling had water pouring from it
that add a wire, are never friendly when they work ok but when they do not good luck! in some cases that is all you can do, guys use 8 wire or more it helps the next tech out of a jam in the future the cost is minimal it could be you. thanks. this one was a pistil multiple issues good work

Most have a limited lifetime on the HX, at a minimum 20 years usually.
who was chipper in that nasty howling wind and sub zero schmutz? I stayed in the house except for Christmas day, the poor old furnace here was fighting a losing battle, at one point it hit 65F inside running non stop. too many walls open and insulation out during construction work. 😬🥶

I am not in the trades, but I when to Lowes on Monday that the plumbing section was packed with people dealing with busted pipes. Lots of people still buying CPVC pipes. I am sure they be back when the next freeze hits again.

I agree I've found rollout switch bypassed hi limit bypassed alot of stuff the neighbor got my unit running is what they say then I tell them how dangerous they left the unit then they want to get mad
People don't realize how a dead homeowner affects a business but what do we know. I bypassed an electric furnace temp cutout and learned my lesson when the customer didn't answer the phone when the part came in. Never again, don't care how cold it is. That bothered me for a while until I had to tell myself I was just trying to help someone out in - wind-chill.

white vinegar works to dissolve that blue corrosion stuff
in this case, that was likely already "acidic" corrosion, from condensate. so it would likely not do anything to it or speed up the corrosion. so you'd probably want an alkali or other neutralizer(baking soda). something far more acidic would clean it, but probably do more damage than good :)

@@blankmans8908 small cell type batteries are often alkaline type (potassium hydroxide) which is an alkali on ph scale, and standard white vinegar is an acid on ph scale, so it neutralizes and helps clean the alkali material off. to neutralize something acidic, use something like plain baking soda or mix it into a thick paste with plain water. it will fizz and foam, possibly making a mess.(vinegar and baking soda mixed = volcanic foamy mess) lol
always flush with plain water/rubbing alcohol afterwards.

I've been doing residential hvac for 10 years and that's exactly why at the end of the video you see him replacing the black and white pressure switch instead of the all black one that his headass was testing at the start of that call imagine sounding so confused over a simple pressure switch call and ready to condem the whole damn furnace all the way from the eco bee to the slight hum on the inducer all cuz ur ass didn't want to deal with it like a man. They truly will let just about anybody do this job. And if I'm wrong then why did the all black pressure switch open and close just fine when testing with your Metter? It wasn't dropping voltage cuz the contacts were working properly on that one. Your ass went to a parts house got a universal pressure switch realized you were wrong in your diag and eventually ended up replacing the right one and just hoped we wouldn't notice hack job thru and thru just firing rhe parts cannon at it and hope it works lmao and don't get me started on u peeing on the other guys roof in the first call

I never said it wasn't, what I did was use that condensate switch temporarily for the true draft motor pressure switch while I went and got him another pressure switch..... I even mentioned in the video that if the power would've went out while I was gone, the furnace would have locked out! You're such a cocky little bitch that you CANT even pay attention to WHAT WAS DOING, but you wanna run your mouth...LOL all you did was show me your a total dumbass NO credibility... The pressure switch on the condensate drain was in line with the gas valve. I even told you it was in line with the gas valve. Therefore, if it didn't open and close, it would never give you a pressure switch failure code because it's not on the pressure switch circuit. Man, I LOVE people like you because all you do is confirm I'm worth even more money than I'm already paid. GO back and watch it a few more times....I did have to mount the switches a little higher to make them fit due to the brackets not fitting the same, You can still see the correct wires are going to the correct switch. I worked for a Rheen dealer for 4 years and have done hundreds of Rheems. I can tell you right now where I stated just a few of these things I said they were at 16:02 and a 21:55. ALSO FYI the black/white switch is the condensate switch and has BLUE WIRES, The draft motor switch is ALL BLACK and has PURPLE WIRES. You can say sorry or just craw away once you go back and see I'm correct. Either way I could care less. I admit when I'm wrong but once again I had to go back and watch this carefully and write down the colors so I can be confident.... Later!
