£10 was a lot more than the relatively small sum they were getting from lodgers. It really was a gap in the market at the time. Frankly, it is amazing that they got away with it as long as they did! As usual, it is those who are the most unfortunate who somewhat slip under the radar 😢🤔

No progressions, no moving forward and also a bit of a shut out socially. He rejected consistently that he did not know what they were doing - what else could he say?🤔

Robin, thanks for this and I never realized that Burke was Irish or they killed their victims , I was of the opinion they were body snatchers Really , the wives and the doctor were all aware and hand a part to play in the murders and should have been convicted , I’m sure there must have been laws of some form of consent or regulations for people’s remains to be dissected

There were stories of Hare and wife being pelted iwth stones by villages in a place ther were trying to stop at. There were rumours that Hare could be seen in his later years living as a beggar in the streets - but this is not official and possible was wishful thinking! It is possible hollywood who is to blame for the story of them being grave robbers - possibly they thought it made for a better story? But, serial killers with a 17 body murder countputs them up there as serial killers go here in the UK. 😉

Yes, and to sell the body on for profit. We have some other cases which were referred to in the papers as "burking" . So once the laws had changed regarding selling a body for money, the term sort of died out too even if the body had no marks upon it. 🤔
Nooooo, he wasnt was he! So Dr Knox was famous for his medical breakthroughs from all the dissecting he was doing with all the bodies he was receiving from Burke and Hare. We don't think he actually dealt with any live people at all - possibly why he seemd to lack any kind of remorse.... He was a very famous teacher for medical students in his day, but this required bodies in order to teach. All rather gruesome!😉

How common was this, killing for profit and selling to medical schools? I know digging up bodies for that purpose was done. Was that more common? I think that was more common here in the States but I could be wrong.
Excellent question! We have three cases in our database of "burking" killing to sell the body on. Possibly there are more? But we only have three others. You are right, it was far more common to dig up the bodies. In many cases, the gravediggers were involved. There is a wonderful book (which we do not have access to our databse at the moment so cannot give you the title) of a body snatcher's diary! It involves lots of alcohol! So dig up the body, get the money and drink lots! There was even a case of WHOLESALE grave robbing with - and how appropriate is this with Burke and hare - sending the bodies in bulk to Scotland! Ah our Scottish friends! Quite impressive this!😉
