I remember the feeling when I caught my first Chanook Salmon in Oregon USA. A huge rush.. However I was at the time living in a place where salmon was on the menu a lot on a weekly basis. Sure they taste nice and they CAN up very well ( that will last for years) and smoke up even better ,and the fun of learning new ways of fishing ( lighter gear which I still make) for them was most of the fun. Been home in N.Z. for 4 years now and don't fish for them as a rule. Sometimes in life you find that after having so much of something you just want to give it a rest.. Good fish you caught though, good on you Pal..
Beaut fish young fella! They are a magnificent fish both in appearance & in the fight. The advantage of being at the Mouth (I'm guessing North side of the Rakaia) is that your Salmon had just come into the freshwater & was in primo condition. What did it tip the scales at? Shame that the current rules are only 2 for the entire season.
P.S. Let me know if you know anyone who would like to make their own spinner lures. Imagination and the basics of making your own mainly spinner lures but do have plenty of other stuff . let me know..
hey mate, I'm planning to have a trip to South island recently. If possible, I would like to catch some salmons as well. Could you tell me what the best season to catch salmons, regulations in that area(bag limit? any no fishing zone?) and your gears in detail? Thanks for helping in advance. :)
Late December to March is usually the best time. The waimakariri and rakaia rivers are hotspots, the mouths are pretty good for people with less experience. Limit is 2 a year, must have a licensee and a salmon endorsement card.
@@thatfishingfellanz Thanks for replying mate. Also, How's the condition recently at waimakariri and rakaia? Still got any chance to chase them? Could you also share your experience what's the difference between these two rivers mouths and Tekapo? I have totally zero experience, and hence, I'll appreciate any advice.
Xitus pro Rod 4-7kg 7ft with a 4000 sedona, spooled with 20lb braid and a 16lb leader. You could potentially get away with 8lb but you would have to be very careful, especially since they’re much better fish this year and they fight hard. Also 8lb up river might be ok but 8lb at the mouth is probably not the smartest move.
Ayy cheers bro, tryna keep the videos a bit more interesting with the transitions and all that eh. Yeah it was a bit disappointing but that second fish was much bigger, reckon it just set me up and got me prepared and more determined to land that second one
Good transition at the start as always nice salmon 👍
Gotta keep it interesting ya know. Cheers mate
