I was guest in NZ in 2015 on an exchange that took place between California and NZ for waterfowl hunting. The people, landscapes and different species of waterfowl were something I'll appreciate for the rest of my life. The far NW of CA has a lot in common with the South Island. I also got to go out on a spawner survey for salmon on June 1st on the Hokitika River. Being a salmon guy, it was amazing to see how Chinook from California had adapted to such a similar but different environment on the other side of the globe to sustain its own wild run there in NZ. NZ is the only place where Pacific salmon have been established as self-sustaining. Our Sacramento River "Winter-run" Chinook are believed to have been the primary source for the introduction, which spawn in May-June here. The Winter-run is endangered here as dams cutting them off from their higher altitude and glacial melt fed spawning grounds and almost countless water diversions on the way downstream to the ocean. Enjoy what you've got and support protection your rivers and the great fishing you have. Mitch
Thanks for taking the time to write that interesting comment Mitch! Yeah that is very interesting, I’m hoping to do some more fishing regarding salmon…
Enjoys your videos man, I grew up in kiakoura and chch before moving to aus. I took my partner to the dams in twizel a few years ago and she caught an 9kg brown trout there. Fishing anywhere around the salmon farm off main south road to phenomenal.

First salmon in a long while, really enjoyed catching, cooking and eating... The quintessential kiwi experience.
Cool vid bro
What a great video , well done .
Thanks for the comment, always appreciate the feedback. Cheers Hector
Nice Salmon, we used to catch them up to 30lb in the Otago Harbour sadly the fish releases stopped and the fishery is no more.
Why did the fish releases stop?
The releases stopped due to the trust folding that operated the hatchery that released them every year.@@CalTheKiwi1
May I ask, when was this video filmed? Is it still easy to catch King Salmon here at the end of August and early September?
Nice fishing 👍
Awesome fishing, some days over a hundred fish were landed.
Fish on mate 😊😊
You made me so hungry. Yum 😋
Cooking wild game is a big part of it.Yum indeed.
These were originally McCloud River winter chinook from California
Is a certain better to fish for the salmon? and do you let the lure drop and slow retrieve or?
Enjoyed that, may i ask what make of Rod and Reel, and line weight were you using, Thanks.
Shimano rod a baitrunner Shimano reel, I think the line was a nylon braid line... hope that answers your question.
On ya mate, enjoying your content.
You’ll be replacing the Duley’s before long 😃
Love ya comment, thanks for the encouragement👍
Great video mate... Would love to catch me a salmon!
Yeah it was the highlight of our year and made awesome eating.
Another awesome video! Are they there all year round or only a few months of the year? Keep up the good work 👌
Just a few months, September and then again Jan/February.
Was this at low tide or high tide ? What do u reccommend for this type of fishing ?
The thing we found was the change of light (morning and evening) or high tide. 👍
Is this spot the south bay of Kaikoura? nice fish! May I ask what lure were you using and how much weight of it? thx
North bay in front of the main town, we were using a 50g spoon lure👍
Good video, what type of smoker was that?
It is a MAGMA marine gas grill. Thanks for the comment.
A nice small Salmon. Not massive lol.
I wonder what is the best season for salmon fishing in Kaikura ?
Late August or early September, they are usually ‘running’ then.
Well done. It’s the million cast fish. Lol
What month of the year did you catch your salmon???
Early September 👍
What month was this.......September?
Yeah👍
Cool vid. Was this recent?
Around early September
What kind of salmon is this?
King salmon (Chinook salmon)
@@youngbucknz Salmon escaped from the Salmon farms in Canterbury or Malborough Sounds?
@@avpr1574 no they are wild salmon which were released in the Kaikoura towship stream.
Do you need a fishing license to catch Salmon from the ocean at kaikoura?
You don't need one if you are further than 100m from a stream or river.👍
