do expect to spend outrageous amounts of time on the game though. I racked up 3.6K hours on DE now while having small kids and working full time. Just imagine if I were single and jobless...
Tip for Hera: Don't click on the monk manually to switch conversion targets. Shift/control click from the control group bar, which will remove one monk from the group, and then click on another unit. This will make the original monk continue to convert the original unit, and the other 2 switch to another one. Repeat the process It's easier to click on the portraits in the control group than to click on your monks in the middle of a giant battle. This is called "cloning" in Starcraft Brood War, and it's used by every professional to get Scourge to split up and attack different units, to Irradiate different units, to split up Mutalisks that have been irradiated, etc.
Use the "Go to idle military unit" hotkey to switch between monks really fast, since monks count as military units and stay idle most the the time. This will not take up control group space and since the rest of your army is fighting, they won't be included because they're not idle. I learned this trick from survivalist
Thanks for the explanations! I like to work with the honorable mension on low elo, 8 monks in control groups and when in imp with theocracy 16 monks spread in 8 control groups of 2 monks, so you can start at 1 trough 8 and then start over again still having 1 monk in that same group left who can convert! Either way, learnt a lot more how to improve my monk play to this video, thanks 🙏
I love to see monks taking on a big role in pro play. They are an important unit by design, but for a long time they weren't used because us noobs never got very much value from them (they die very easily without heavy micro). But at a pro level they are crucial, and that's slowly trickling down to lower elos as well. Another thing I wanted to point out is that there are actually 20 control groups you can create. Ctrl+0-9 and then ctrl+shift+0-9. I mostly use ctrl+shift for buildings but they could be helpful for monks as well.
They also werent used in pro play for a long ass time because of lag, and most importantly, screen size. Back in the good old days, your TC actually takes up half your screen. If you want to know that experience, play Age of Empires II in windowed mode, where you will be forced into a 1300 something by 700 something resolution. That screen size makes a huge difference.
I always found this target switching during conversion one of the weirdest things. Imagine I'm trying to convince someone to join my religion, and I talk with him a lot, and build up good arguments, and explain him more and more about the basics of my faith, and there comes a random passerby, and I turn to him and say "hey, you wanna join my religion?", and he joins immediately BECAUSE I've spent so much time almost convincing someone else.
One thing about control grouping monks. I usually don't use y-p keys on my keyboard, and control groups go up to like 20 if You want to. I usually dont have more than 5 unit control groups and 6-7 keys might be for important buildings (like dedicated siege workshop or stables). That still leaves about 8 group controls I never use. Combined with right ctrl key, it's pretty quick setup that doesnt mess with other groupings
2:44 what if the monks accidently get the conversion for one unit and all run out of juice at the same time, and you can't convert more knights? Is it very rare that that happens?
talking about the honourable mention: would it be practical to use control groups 11-20 for this kind of monk micro? since they don't mess around with your other control groups of 1-10
I went from 1000 to 1200 just because people countered knights with pikes, I would make two scorps and then it would be the end of it. At 1200 people start to use monks and it is harder for me
The fact that the conversion timer does not reset if you've started converting with a group of monks and then switch to individual conversions seems like an unintended bug and I wouldn't be surprised if they "fixed" / nerfed it at some point in the😂 future. Keep pumping out that awesome content! Love your vids
Until fairly recently you could do it with buildings. But because buildings took so long to convert you could "charge up" on the building and when an enemy unit appears, instantly convert it. It was really nasty in the right circumstances and I am glad they patched it out.
Ok I've always been terrible with monks - playing a few ladder games after watching this and intentionally practicing with monks, and it feels like I've unlocked a whole new aspect of the game that I was ignoring before!
Got back to playing some ladder after a few weeks away - first game on one of the open maps I followed this advice and it was a stomp, the opponent had nothing to counter just a few monks.
would have liked that you no longer can charge conversions on buildings since you could do that for a long time and that information may is be out there and the game doesnt tell you that it doesnt work anymore. A big problem in high level aoe 2 is that Monks do counter Knights but siege doesnt really counter Xbows.
PLEASE HELP! Everytime I get into a quick play lobby it’ll fill up and then freeze during the countdown timer, is there any fix for this??? Haven’t been able to play multiplayer for about three weeks now
It does, but there's a minimum time of 4 CI that stays the same. And if the conversion succeeds, all monks involved at the end of it, will lose their faith (unless you have theocracy researched).
Monk healing for free is so good! Just consider how amazing it'd be, if villagers could repair ships and siege units for free... or castles?! That's how bonkers monk healing is! (Not exactly, because those units and buildings have more impact than most single units that can be healed for free [with the possible exception of War Elephants], but the comparison illustrates how amazing it is.)

I think with the aggressiveness in aoe now, monestary should be put before TCs in castle age.. monks are usefull always and strongest in castle age. Also for those who want multiple conversions, you can try my method, I click convert 1st unit as hera said but I actualyl CTRL click monks from the from their icon screen, its harder then the one in the video but that works for me. for the techs, i havn't wathced the other video yet, but personally I like monks movement speed, I always get it first.. it jsut feels good for me
Hate how you say things are broken all the time. If they were to follow your recommendation then no unit would have any advantage and all civs would be the same. Sometimes there just needs to be powerful, but counterable strategies and units. Monk healing is not broken, its almost too weak.
Bruh I never even played AOE2 except when I was a kid in 2005 once or twice, why am I watching these videos like crazy? 🤣
same, kinda.. I should start playing the game lol

But you can't do it with the "start converting with all the monks at once" trick. It also won't work if you have some random idle military.
You don't need to start converting all at once because this hotkey allows you to get them working really fast@@LordTameo
2:30 - I find Suvivalist's way faster. You manually deselect your monk, instead of manually selecting.
that’s not how he does it nowadays
How do you deselect?

Makes sense cause you've been practicing your arguments on the first guy
He was warming up 😂
Great video, especially your point about charging up monks together initially in the same target and then splitting up.
Don't forget to shift-click to queue up the picking up of the relic and the carry back to the monastery.
Ah, yes, Convertion Juice
9:18 "They will tank you're TC and die naturally" Sounds like a strange natural death to me HAHA. Good video however.

Monk group that converts something without Theocracy researched: "I'm all out of faith! This is how I feel!"
Then the other knights start to kill you because you didn't convert them, "I'm cold and I am shamed"
talking about the honourable mention: would it be practical to use control groups 11-20 for this kind of monk micro? since they don't mess around with your other control groups of 1-10

How good is Bimaristan? It should be awesome based on you talking about healing.

What control groups do you have Hera? That might even be a good idea for a video at some point
Would love to see a hotkey/control groups strategy vid. I have my own setup, but am always wondering if I need to tweak
@Hera do think the cost of monks should be increased? Maybe to 125 gold and increase Monastery cost to 250 wood?
the multiple conversion tip is brilliant. For some reason I always thought that having 3 monks at one target made the conversion go quicker.....
It does, but there's a minimum time of 4 CI that stays the same. And if the conversion succeeds, all monks involved at the end of it, will lose their faith (unless you have theocracy researched).
Have you seen survivalist's idle military monk micro? It seems totally broken.
army could move to monk in square formation for protection in some cases 😸

Didn’t they fix the monk changing target thing to reset conversions?
the monastery go close to the enemy because is a production building or go in the back? if you are walling of course.
Defensive near tc. Offensive from center to very near enemy base is good
Didnt they patch the "charge conversion" glitch?
iam at around 900 Elo and at there is only knight play. Since i play with a few Monks its way more chill.

why the monk kill the unit
Knights counter pikes
Yooo
As a 1k elo franks picker I humbly request that you delete this.
I know some monks and can confirm that it is called conversion juice. Haters will say it is called Chrism but that is cap and fake news.

"Broken" has just become a hype phrase like, "awesome". Don't read too much into it.
